[Q] Help using Universal Auto Root - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just tried rooting my phone using the Universal Auto Root tool from this thread. It went through steps 1-8 ok, but on the screen with the red triangle & exclamation point, the script timed out and installation failed.
My phone doesn't start up now (just hangs on white EVO splash screen), and I can't seem to find the right option in the recovery menu to start over. When I try running the AutoRoot script again, it says ERROR Misc partition did not flash correctly, and gives me the message about flashing RUU through fastboot.
Can anyone help?

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip
Download, rename to PC36IMG, then flash in bootloader. Its an RUU of the 3.70 stock.

Did it say anything about adb errors? Most of the time if it fails it is because the drivers didn't install correctly our something interfered with it.

[Q] Stuck in hboot after manually applying OTA update.

I tried a manual install using "[Guide] How to apply the new OTA 3.29.651.5 when you have clockwork and s-off" (posted there too)
After the update, I'm stuck in HBOOT and can't start the phone at all.
Booting into recovery gives me a red exclamation. Doing up+volume, starts the stock recovery. It shows the error "E:can't open/cache/recovery/command"
I tried updating to a stock rom or a custom recovery (renaming each one to update.zip) but all of them fail the signature verification. I do have the "show known file type extensions" option set to visible, so I don't think it's the update.zip.zip problem I saw here.
Phone was rooted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm phoneless

What H-Boot version do you have? I would try going here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=791019 and downloading the PC36IMG.zip file posted, rename it to PC36IMG.zip (make sure that if you hide file extensions in Windows, you don't have .zip on 2x) put it on the root of your SD card, go into bootloader...it will detect the file and when it asks you if you want to run the update, do it and it will update your system. Should fix you right up!
Thanks for the help! I actually just figured it out myself. I renamed the file I tried initially on the OP of the thread I mentioned and renamed that to update.zip. Updated in the stock recovery and it worked from there. Unrevoked still worked after (though S-Off didn't)
I tried the way you mentioned before, but it told me "old version." and wouldn't go through. I have hboot 0.97 now, which is probably the cause of the problem, plus S-ON, which I thought was OFF before.

[Q] lookin for some help

can someone point me in the right direction to get a recovery on my phone.

As far as I know, you place the PC36IMG.zip (named exactly as such, too, making sure you aren't naming it .zip.zip, as well) in the root of your SD card and load into your bootloader. From there, it will automatically detect the file within a few moments of loading up into your bootloader and you select the appropriate steps, given the on-screen instructions, to flash the PC36IMG file, which will be your recovery.
i have tried the PC36IMG.zip and unrevoked says that it failed to flash the recovery and i got the debugging and non-market apps down.
one other thing. the phone like to random reboot. it will just reboot with no warning after just a few min of use and will stay on if not being used.

amon ra recovery
try putting this PC36IMG.zip in the root of your sd card, boot intobootloader wait for your phone to recognize it and hit update, the zip is for amon ra 2.3 recovery
after many hours of trial and error and 6 diffrent computers and 4 cables i was able to get a recovery loaded and its workin great.... except the random reboot crap....
BTW
used unrevoked 3 to get it up.
Usually with bad random rebooting, nothing will help. Download the s-on zip from the unrevoked website, flash it in recovery, then run the RUU again. You should be stock, s-on. Then take it to Sprint & have them replace it.

[Q] Rooting gone wrong/ I've made a big mistake

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone can help me out here because I've screwed up somehow and would like to un-do whatever it is I've done. I'm trying to think straight so I hope what I type out ends up making sense .
1. Right now, my phone works. I'm stuck on a rooted pre-OTA stock rom. I unrooted once, but was not able to flash the OTA update via the stock recovery. I still have a use-able phone so I'm doing better than some people in threads I've read about.
2. I tried to root it with gfree. I don't think it worked, and some errors came up during the process. I used the first method then skipped to 0.2 per the wiki. Using g-free verify tells me everything is alright. supercid, sim lock, etc.
3. I am s-off, but earlier I couldn't get gfree verify to work (my own error I'm certain) and assumed I screwed up. Rom manager and root explorer never gave me prompts for superuser permissions, but I was s-off. I didn't think I rooted correctly and used the rage against the cage method.
4. Right now, I'm apparently s-off and rooted. I can't flash any roms though. I use rom manager to flash the latest recovery, it says it works and then when I reboot to recovery it stays stuck on the HTC splash screen. Battery pull takes me back to the pre-OTA rom. Recovery only recently stopped working though.
Ultimately, I need to get recovery back somehow, and then I'd return my phone back to an unrooted state with the stock 2.2 rom since I can't seem to handle rooting to well. Since I have no clockwork mod recovery, not really sure what to do to get this process rolling. If someone can help me get recovery back, and then help me flash roms again I'd definitely appreciate it. I have noone to blame but myself here.
If it ends up mattering, I do have adb installed and can use that if need be, and like I said my phone still boots up. I don't have a brick but something crazy is going on.

Hey thank you so much for a response! I tried this with two sd cards because I didn't have any luck. I tried that exact command and flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-vision.img and each time it returns flash_image: not found
It definately is on my sd card.

Do you have the engineering bootloader? If not, you may have to try it with ADB.

Im fairly certain I had to flash it to root with the rage method, vol + pwr screen says "vision pvt eng s-off hboot 0.76.2000 (pc1010000)"
With adb it gives me the same error, but I used rom manager to flash 2.5.1.3 so I have a recovery again. I have one good nandroid of the rom im stuck on.
My next issue is that I tried to flash the stock rom with root from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836042 and something isn't right. I wipe data/cache and then go to install zip from sdcard (manual recovery) and select the rom. What happens after is it tells me the normal messages it gives when flashing and "welcome to vision" but when the flash is done instead of giving me the option of "reboot system now" it goes back to the install zip for sd card menu like the flash never happened (and it will not boot past the htc screen)

Maybe it's a bad recovery. You said you flashed 2.5.1.3, so ROM Manager should work. Try flashing 3.0.2.4 through there now. If not, I suggest downloading Fastboot.

Thanks for the guide! I followed it with no issue, I rebooted into recovery; it first hung on the HTC screen, rebooted, vibrated and then booted back into the OS. So anyway, instead of 2.5.1.3, I'm on 3.0.0.5 now.
I went down to 2.5.1.3 and downloaded cm6.1 via rom manager. It told me this : E: can't open '/sdcard/..location (bad) installation aborted. tmp/recovery.log was copied to sdcard
I tried enom's froyo themed rom next, heres what recovery tells me:
Installing update...
Formatting cache
Copying files
Formatting SYSTEM
Copying files...
E Can't symlink /system/bin/su
E Failure at line 19:
symlink /system/xbin/su SYSTEM: bin/su
Installation aborted.
I also tried to download an updated superuser from the market, it says installation unsuccessful package file was not signed correctly.

If this is the Gingerbread OTA, you'll need everything as stock. If it's the "OTA" with Superuser thrown in, you'll need CWM Recovery 3+ (2.5* formats the system in yaffs, 3+ formats it in EXT).
This is just the ota update with wifi calling still 2.2, Im unrooted and stock recovery again

Unable to get into Recovery nor Flash CM7

Hello,
I have a T-Mobile G2 and I have been on Miui-108050 for sometime, but I want to go back to CM7. After wiping data+cache from recovery I tried flashing a CM7 nightly, and RC1, but both just stuck at the HTC screen. I was unable to get a logcat from the HTC bootscreen either. After trying this many times I restored my Miui nandroid and downloaded rom manager to reflash ClockworkMod recovery and it says it was successful in flashing recovery 3.0.2.4 but when I reboot into recovery, it goes from the HTC bootscreen to a black screen, and then reboots back into Miui. After trying this multiple times I still can't get into recovery.
Can someone provide me the .img for the latest G2 ClockworkMod recovery and the command to flash it through terminal and help me re install CM7?
This should help.

The command "adb push recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-vision.img /data/local/tmp/recovery.img" was successful but did not bring my recovery back.
Also, in Fastboot, recovery is not an option.
It does say S-OFF Hboot-0.76.2000 radio - 26.08.04.30_M3 emmc-boot
I also tried reflashing a PC10IMG.zip through my bootloader, but it failed and now my phone seems to be bricked. It won't get past the bootscreen.
Please someone tell me how I can use my phone again by only having a bootloader.
Trying to reload a PC10IMG without knowing exactly what it will do is not advisable as that is a very easy way of bricking your phone. Especially if the phone is not behaving how it should from the beginning.
Beside that, it appears as if your phone isn't a complete brick. Have you attempted to go through the instructions in the following thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842495&highlight=semi+brick
I cannot get into adb shell. It says no such file or directory.

[Q] Can I flash Clockwork Mod recovery from hboot?

I'll run through a history:
- Rooted my phone to S-OFF and installed a custom ROM
- Installed another custom ROM after running a 'super wipe' script
- Decided I wanted to go back, tried to get to clockworkmod recovery but I couldn't get to hboot
- Tried to re-root, got halfway and it failed. I could now get to hboot but when I get to clockworkmod recovery it shows an error logo with a danger triangle sign. When I try to boot it just stays on the HTC logo.
- The first time I tried to load Clockworkmod it said it couldn't access some /cache/ directory and now it just shows the warning icon with no error message.
I think I need to reinstall Clockworkmod, then use that to reinstall a ROM. I heard it's possible to do this by flashing a zip file from the SDcard and loading hboot. How can I do this?
Thanks!

That red triangle is HTC's recovery mode. You should manage to get root via one click root and then flash clockwork normally. In the app.
Thanks. What exactly is one click root? Have googled it but not sure which it is.
I think you might mean this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
But that seems to require that I can boot into a ROM in the first place? I can't get past the HTC logo at all.

No that is S-OFF. You need S-OFF if you want to flash custom rom. This is what I meant http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Thanks again. Just to clarify, on hboot it tells me it's 'S-OFF' at the top of the screen. I should run the one click utility anyway, right?
I don't think superone click works on dhd but I could be wrong. Haven't read up on it in a long time.
But back to original question on hand. I made a guide in the general section for this exact issue. It titled stuck in hboot. Their I have a link for cwr in a pd98 format(flashable through hboot).
It should work for you. I did notice that the modelid in the txt is different but was told it should work for dhd with no modification but I have not confirmed as I have an inspire. If it doesn't work let me know and ill make the change quickly and uplaod a new one. Its a simple change. If you want to can try. Simply change the model I'd to pd98100000 from pd9812000
Thank you, I will try that now.
...And it worked! Thanks all

I have a similar problem. I tried to flash a galaxy rom on to my htc evo 4g and now my phone wont boot up. I actually need instructions on how to do this. When I try to flash recovery it goes into HBOOT and also goes into bootloader. But when I try recovery it goes to the white HTC Evo 4g screen and immediately goes back to Hboot. Iv tried to download a clockworkmod custom recovery img and flash it as a PC36IMG zip. It finds the zip and says parsing PC36IMG but doesn't ask if I want to flash it and goes back into bootloader. I renamed the recovery image "Recovery" and the Zip "PC36IMG" as instructed from a different website. I can ONLY use this method because my micro port is broken.
Also when I downloaded the recovery image there were two choices. Recovery image and recovery touch image. We should I go with?

I tell you how to over come this:
1) Throw your phone into the trash can
2) Buy a new one
3) Come back to xda
4) Read all the tutorials once again
5) Read them again
6) Re-read them
7) Now do whatever you want.
This method works perfectly for any noob...

Sorry but what are you talking about an EVO 4g in the DHD forums??...BTW, in the zip file you need a .txt file to be able to be flashed. If that file is missing then the hboot will never detect the .zip file.
Besides, if you have an unlocked bootloader you won't be able to flash recovery in that way. You can do it using fastboot flash commands...
