Warranty Voided due to Root? [SOLVED-ish] - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So someone rooted probably a branded set,
unrooted back to Stock.
Sent for warranty, got a call that it was rooted before thus warranty voided.
Conclusion: How do we know that we have erased the tracks of rooting our HTC Desire? How are we sure that it's the same state as it was before?
What are the main things people should look out for after rooting if they want to make sure they don't get caught rooting to void their warranty?
Thanks.

Do a full wipe and flash a stock rom. Then you should be fine.

True, according to the person he did unroot using the uh...Shipped RUU's.

Should've used the branded RUU for their phone

How do you tell it's for branded?
Not to mention many of the shipped ROMS look rather outdated-ish for new Desire users. (And not a lot of selections? Does it affect?)

I would advice to flash one of the latest stock roms just to be sure. I dont want to be harsh but your friend should have read more about rooting and restoring etc then this could have been avoided.
What carrier is the phone using? Then you need to find to find a rom that matches. But I doubt he will get his warranty back.

Of course. Lol once voided it's near impossible to get it back.
GSM, probably branded and had GPS problem.
Anywho mine is GSM as well, branded and if I want to unroot back, how would I know which is the most suitable for me?

You get an RUU that matches your carrier or closest (I guess) and a really up to date version (2.29.405.5). You can't go wrong really. If it fails, claim on your insurance... providing you have some.

Too outdated + not a lot.
Shipped roms site is the best but there's only one closest to my Software no but it's .1 before. It should work right?
Why does the software no matter?

It matters are HTC will know which version it was shipped with. For example:
My Desire is an unbranded handset, shipped with 1.15.405.3
So long as I sent it back with a version x.xx.405.x then I'm OK as it's the right software
If your desire wasn't on x.xx.405.x software and you send it back on it HTC can refuse to fix it

[Q] Question about which version of RUU to download

Hi all,
My phone info is here:
Baseband version: 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2
Software number: 2.13.720.2
From this link, I do not find a matching RUU for my phone.
The nearest I find is - RUU_Bravo_Froyo_hTC_Asia_WWE_2.13.707.1_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_143921_signed.exe
So should I go ahead and download this one for future references?
Thanks!
Different RUU's have different locales and languages (Asia RUU would probably have Singapore, and Europe RUU wouldn't have it for example), but the difference is very minor.
The most important thing to see when you flash an RUU is whether its meant for AMOLED or SLCD.

I have an SLCD Desire. And So is this the right RUU for me?? I belong to India BTW..
Well based on this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831734), I quote

It depends. If your device is an SLCD, running anything less than version 2.x has the potential to brick your device unless it is specifically certified to work with your device.

If you want a WWE (world wide) go for it, or not, you can also use a RUU meant for India. Its a personal preference.
As long as you use version 2.x above, it will be fine.
BUT! another thing to consider, is your phone unbranded?
Honestly, I suggest reading that thread abit more and see what you can learn

Thanks! Yes, I did read those help and how to links. I've understood few things which were Latin and Greek to me a couple of days ago. I've also read about the custom ROMs, the features they offer. So all in all, it's been a pretty fruitful week at xda
I've also decided on which custom ROM to flash first Just want to make sure I do it right, and hence exercising utmost caution.
'unbranded"? - as in locked to a particular network? -- No
I bought the phone unlocked and Froyo (2.2) came by default. So I didn't upgrade it OTA.
Last I updated something was the 2.13.720.2 firmware.
On your first post, just fyi, Baseband is your radio version
Each custom ROM developer would recommend their best radio version.
Anyway, if you are going to flash a custom ROM, that would mean you have to root, which you probably could go with "unrevoked" (google), and in the future, when you feel like it, Alpharev s-off.
So, as far as I know, flashing RUU's would take away root (ie. unroot, because RUUs are not "rooted"), and if you are going to flash a custom ROM, why would you be looking for an RUU?
In case I need in the future - to unroot for any reason, for warranty purposes, et al.
Before flashing a ROM, I wanna make sure that if things go wrong I have a way to restore my phone to default, which is why I wanted to know as to which RUU to download.
Okay
Well, I've done some reading around, and it looks like the RUU for India (2.13.720.2) was only released a couple of days ago.
I think the only thing now is to wait for the RUU to get dumped, or maybe request for it. :/
It's like the same that I cannot find the latest RUUs for SEA over on Shipped-Roms.
But honestly, my phone's firmware was for Asia last time, but I got sick of waiting for Froyo (it was released in Asia, but my phone just couldn't search OTA for it), and because I didn't see any RUU for it, I just downloaded a WWE version and flashed over the Asia one.
I've even talked to some people working in shops specializing in services for phones (jailbreak, root, soldering hardware, etc), and they honestly told me that even when sent back for warranty, their company does not really check software.
But also, your way has its merits. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Yes, it was realeased a couple of days ago.
Thanks for the heads up, mate. Will sit down to root my Desire in a week or so - waiting for the Christmas holidays!
I do know a couple of friends who bricked their phone (coz of incompatible RUU) and to my surprise, they got their phones replaced from HTC! So it does appear that they do not pay much attention to the software changes caused due to rooting.
Cheers!

I would go for the 1.32 version because of the root restriction the 1.72 has
Quick question: How can I know what RUU was on my phone? I know what CID my phone had before I did S-OFF (it was HTC__032) and I know it wasn't branded. Also I know it was 1.32 version, but I don't remember radio version.
I narrowed it down to these two:
RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.3_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26 .03.02.15_M3_release_155032_signed
RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.6_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26 .03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed
but how can I be sure?
I don't need it now, but I want to download it just in case I need it for warranty.
Thanks.

I think there is no difference from warranty point of view. You could have updated your phone with the official HTC software and this shouldn't void the warranty.
One more thing though - I saw there are .405. ROMs which are branded. I think those are carrier unlocked ROMs but with the operators bloatware on them. So if you had one of these you should probably flash them if you need warranty services.

Thank you, you are right about update. Following that logic I could flash any ROM newer then this.
My device was partially branded. It had official carrier ringtone on SD card and bookmark shortcut to there website on desktop. Both of those things I deleted before I root-ed without any trouble so I believe that it won't be a problem to flash stock RUU if needed.

[Q] Help me configure a device - out of the norm this one..

Hi guys,
To cut a long story short, I have a DHD turning up this afternoon that's locked to Orange but I want to use my Voda sim in it as work pay for that contract.
Now, I've read that I can downgrade the software version, that will then allow me to run the easy s-off tool that will also sim unlock the device, but ideally I want to use the phone as stock for a while before I start messing about with ROM's.
Can I upgrade the phone's official software via htc once the downgrade and sim unlock has been completed?
If I can't, what's the fastest / closest ROM available to the orange stock ROM?
Any suggestions?
I'm also worried about warranty as the phone is brand new.
Will doing any of the above void my warranty? Is there anything I can do to revert back if it is?
And just to check, have I got this right...
- new phone
- if software version higher than 1.7xx downgrade
- use One click ENG S-OFF to sim unlock
- upgrade back to latest stock version
thanks,
blastman

If you install a WWE (generic) stock rom then yes, on a custom rom no. But the devs keep their custom roms up to date so no need to worry about HTC updates.

I'd recommend leedroid or android revolution, but if you want as stock as possible then a WWE rom.

There's been some controversy about this. I haven't been able to find in the warranty terms that messing with the software voids the warranty. Ofcourse if you brick your device then it's another story. But your phone can always be returned to as it was when you got it, so no problem there.
And just to check, have I got this right...
- new phone
- if software version higher than 1.7xx downgrade
- use One click ENG S-OFF to sim unlock

You'll need radio s-off, not eng s-off.
Follow these two guides from jkoljo:
[GUIDE] How to downgrade 1.7x/1.8x/2.x to 1.32.405.6
[TOOL][VIDEO] One click Radio S-OFF, SimUnlock (Easy Root & S-OFF Guide)
When you're done you will have a 1.32 WWE rom with root, simunlock and radio s-off. I wouldn't recommend upgrading to higher version stock rom because you really don't gain much and higher versions are unrootable.
Or if you insist on updating you can try following this guide
And if if you decide on a custom rom (which I really recommend) then you can read further from their respective threads.
that sir, is perfect.
thank you.
I'm not new to xda has I've had several phones that's I've flash before, but it's been a while and as with every new phone I need a catch-me-up.
thanks
About the warranty..
I remember someone on xda saying they haven't heard of a SINGLE case, where rooting/custom rom would have denied warranty repair/replacecment.
Also, if you're not afraid, you would ultimately win in court, even if they did. If you have watched the iPhone news, Geohot won the case against Apple regarding jailbreaking: It's your device, you can do what you want with it

Hi,
Why not just buy a SIM unlock code from one of the many online sellers ?
I did this prior to rooting my branded (Orange UK) to run my German O.Tel.O SIM and had no dramas with OTA.
HTH,

Didn't need to do either.
They've sent me an unbranded sim-free version!

Alternative site to get original RUU's

Hi.
I see that shipped-roms.com is shut down. is there an alternative site that i can get these original RUU's? I'm looking for Orange UK Bravo. I would say any UK one would do though.

What do you need an RUU for?
Y'all know HTC support warranty on the 2.3.3 GB release? Which is unbranded. This means you can flash this (if you don't get a CID error - for most of Europe) then it is warranty returnable without the need of a goldcard.

I don't think it is a retail One X purchased in China. 1.26.401.2 is generic European version IIRC. You don't need to do anything with it. You're fine just using that version and should get updates before any of the carrier branded versions.

Ahh. I thought you were on that version now. Sorry. Misunderstood what you were asking.
At the moment, all you can do is unlock the bootloader at htcdev and flash a custom firmware. You can't apply an official HTC firmware or change the baseband firmware as the bootloader is still in S-ON mode.
Once/if somebody does work out how to put the bootloader in S-OFF mode then you can alter the CID and reflash it with an official US or European One X firmware.
