Hi Folks,
Just checking my data balance with my operator.. and its showing i am using on average 12 megs per day... seems a little high as i'm on wi-fi at home..
does synching with yahoo mail eat a lot of data? i sync news reader subs on the wifi ini the morning.. and only use browsing a little on the phone.. nothing major..
does google maps use a lot of data?
Just seem a little high.. my current data plan offer 250 megs a month.. so might be a little low!
Cheers,
Mick
Ive noticed this as well. I think it has something to do with google maps. According to my data usage program I have uploaded 15mb and downloaded 5mb today. What on earth is doing all the uploading and why?
i assume this is because of the my location service
if you have this enabled you agree that the service can withdraw these details at any time during the day.
try disabling the my location service from the settings menu and try again.
especially if you have gps disabled in which case it will find your location based on your GSM which will use your phone's connection?
again it's just a theory but this definitely applied to my hD2
Its a shame nobody has written an app to show data usage per application. I`ve searched and found nothing
when you say "a little bit of browsing". it won't take many pages to add up to 12mb these days. on graphics heavy, or just badly made websites this could easily be as few as 10 pages!

Google maps only stores a limited amount of the map to it's cache and all the rest it pulls from your data bundle to update what you see on your screen. There are a few apps available with the maps downloadable to your SD card. These apps will remove the need for maps to cache if you use it.
I'm having a problem with something using data on my phone. I have the data counter widget and if I havent used wifi or 3g all day then turn one of them on it shows me as downloaded around 20kb. I disabled auto update on the weather and the set the download frequency in the mail app to manual. Can't think of anything else. Anyone got other suggestions?
Bet you've got Latitude enabled.
Whats latitude and how do you disable it?
The part of Maps that tells you where your buddies are and your buddies where you are.
If you don't know what it is, it's probably not enabled.
Open Maps, press menu and tap Latitude, menu again then privacy settings. You disable it there.

Try 'Spare Parts'. Whilst its doesn't exactly show this you can see Network usage under the battery section. It's by application but am not sure if its really network usage or just battery usage by network functions.
I would also be interested in such application. On my WinMo device I used SPB wireless monitor, which did the job very well.
I am using around 1MB of data per day (gmail-only emails-sync, weather sync 3 hours), but even if I disable everything, there are still some data transfers. This could be a problem when abroad...

This is freaking me out. I'm on Wi-fi practically all the time and have still used 80mb in three days!
My frequencies in terms of auto updates for Facebook etc are the same as on my previous hd2 but it didn't chew up anywhere like this amount.
Any ideas? Is it really Google location?
I can't believe that there hasn't been more talk about this. I have a corporate limit of 500mb per month.

same here.. i switched tariffs yesterday to get a 1gb monthly limit..
you can turn off internet connection via mobile networks.. might be worth trying to save data.. also i'm using the opera web browser as it uses a lot less data.. also turn off background sync altogether.. wont stop your emails etc....

If the phone goes into standby, by default it turns off WiFi and switches to cellular data. It's in the setup Wireless menus, there's options on when to do this, including never which means all network connectivity will cease when the phone is in standby, so no push email etc.
no, never means that the wifi never turns off and it will continue to use wifi when in standby.
however, if you have it set to 15 minutes, then yes the wifi will turn off and go back to cellular data.

I'd install 3gwatchdog (which monitors your data usage, excluding wifi), and then start quitting apps, making whatever changes you want to try and see what's causing it.
Thanks guys, I already had Wi-fi sleep set to 'never'.
Ok today I have no Wi-fi and up to 1600 I have used over 30mb.
These are the apps I believe are drawing data down (28mb is data in).
BBC headlines widget, set to 2hrs
Guardian app, only downloads on Wi-fi
Facebook 2 hrs
Twitter 2 hrs
Google location - allow wireless location
Email for both corporate and hotmail accounts.
I can't think of anything else. This is all consistent with my hd2 but it was using far less. I can't believe there isn't an app that can slice it by app.

By default, data when roaming is disabled so this should not be an issue unless you are like me where I am roaming from the second I walk out of the office door so need to have this enabled. I must remember to turn this off when I get on a plane
I've had my HTC Desire since just after launch, and I've had the default HTC Clock/Weather widget on my main screen since then. It's always given my current location pretty accurately, with at most a 15minute delay when I arrive somewhere new.
Until yesterday. Since yesterday my location is given as 'United Kingdom', with what I can only presume is a generic weather info for the UK, which is different from the weather forecast for my actual location (I have my home location as one of the additional places).
I've tried removing the widget and re adding. I've tried powering off and on. I've tried replacing the widget with the one that just does weather. All with the same result, my location remains 'United Kingdom'.
Additional info, the GPS is enabled, and Google Maps and various other apps give my exact location quite happily almost instantly. Syncing works just fine for other apps, and the weather account is enabled under sync.
Any ideas how I can get the weather widget working again properly?

check if u have the latest software in the settings+ about phone, cuz pretty sure mine was working bugy untill the latest update
Mine started doing the same after an ota update.
Not found a fix for it, but found a way around it.
All I've done is go into the weather app from the widget, and manually added my city and deleted all the other irrelevant locations.
Not ideal as have to change it manually if I move out of my home city, but better than the generic uk weather until the bug is fixed. It's not often I venture outside the city limits anyway.

hehe funny thing is that i did this work around before the actuall update, as current location never could find the data, after the up it started working fine, suppose different network = different problems

It has been working fine until yesterday. I haven't changed any settings, applied any updates, installed any apps. I've had no system messages that I know of.
I have tried doing a manual update, there are no available updates.
I don't know what the latest version is, but here is what I get...
Firmware version
2.1-update1
Baseband version
32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11
Kernel version
2.6.29-3cb3dfbf
[email protected] #1
Build number
1.15.110.11 CL155070 release keys
Software number
1.15.110.11
Browser version
Webkit 3.1
I am on T-Mobile if that is relevant.

I've temporarily done this. Odd thing is that the list of default available cities was a bit strange. It wasn't the same as the list of cities I had selected as weather locations in the widget, and included some odd ones that I would never have selected.
Is there any way I can get a history of OTA updates that I have had?

Well if it means there is an impending Froyo update (i.e. within the next few days) then I'll live with it. Otherwise I wish they'd stop buggering about.
I also have had this issue it started for me about an hour ago... It usually very accurate with my location, I live in Jersey, in the Channel Islands (UK) and it was accurate down to the parish I live in, but all of a sudden it started displaying my location as Escondido and my clock is now 8hrs behind.... Ive never even heard of that place lol...
I cant get around this as my location is not avalible in the list it offers. the best I can do is go into settings, change the time so that atleast the little clock in the top right corner show the correct time, and wait and hope it resloves itself.
On a side note. When I go outside with the phone, the widget has a little fit and switches between Escondido and London. Neither of which are correct.
Hope this is only temporary as its highly irritating...
Well it's still happening for me now, so don't hold your breath. Maybe when T-Mobile release the 2.2 update for my Desire that'll fix it.
Hi I'm using my desire from Brazil with no problems like this. I bought it in switzerland, so it's an unlocked desire running 2.2

I'm having this problem right after Froyo update. I own an Asia Pacific Desire without contract. The weather app and clock widget keep showing the location of a town 70km from where I am.
Pocketnow reported that an update to the HTC Hub tile brings Live tile functionality by showing weather conditions and such. Who here is seeing that on their Hub tile? I'm not. I tried every way to make it show but it won't.
It might be a case of misinformation at Pocketnow.
no it isn't. i have it working fine on my HTC 7 Trophy in Australia. Have you checked the settings within your HTC Hub after updating?

Yeah, tried everything. Tried using auto location and manual location. Tried with WiFi and data. No luck. Maybe it isn't available here in the states yet since HTC is a foreign company.
does it work within HTC hub (not the live tile, but the app itself). If so, just leave the tile pinned and it should refresh itself sometime throughout the day.
Confirmed
I have an HD7 on TMO US and got this update yesterdy and the tile is showing live weather info now.

+1. I'm in SoCal too, too.
7ya the new update for hte HTC hub is showing info on the tile.... cool...
Mine also shows the weather and such on the live tile. Now if they can get the flip clock on there I will be set!
+1 for Norway. Even shows locations not available through the location search
no problems for me. HTC hub is still to slow to open though, too much animation, not enough substance. Sticking with weatherbug for weather.
The new HTC live tile looks so nice I've promoted it to the top of my start screen
Mine isn't showing the live tile either...
I have a HD7 in america, and I have tired uninstalling the htc hub and still no live tile.. I don't get it.

mine too took some time for the live tile to get updated.
I had done one restart also in between and it helped. (Not sure if it was the time frame I waited or the restart which helped)
Works for me in the UK. Mine didn't show at first, but go into the settings from the HTC Hub and instead of using 'My Location', try setting that to a particular location. If you select 'My Location', don't forget to make sure that Location is enabled in your main phone's settings.
I ended up doing a hard reset and it works fine now... Seems that live tiles just die out for some reason over time...
Hopefully that will be fixed in an update.
i've received the update yesterday or so, don't really remember, could also be today, because i just press update all and forget about it.
Then when i came along this topic I was like "huh" so checked my phone to have a look but no live tile.
Then i entered the HTC hub, checked the settings if there was something like update live tile or something, but there was nothing.
When I returnd to the home screen the htc tile changed and it showed the weather
pretty nice
I suppose either HTC or MS will need to work on the liveness of the HTC Hub tile. It has been much longer than 24 hours straight since powering on my HD7 and the HTC Hub still shows nothing but the common image.
Mine doesn't do it all the time either.
Just checked it, still says Hebron, TX where I was on Christmas.
I have it set to update every hour, it just rarely does.
Even after a phone reboot, it won't update unless I open it, then about 30 seconds it updates the tile.
Otherwise, its sporadic. When I first got the update it seemed like it was working fine.
Now, it doesn't seem to work at all.
Sweeet! I now have a live Hub tile!
Hey all, I did not have much luck using the search. Tried to find other people who have had this problem.
We have 4 ATT Tilt 2 phones in my department. All with the same rom, radio, settings, etc. The difference in the phones is that 2 of them were purchased about a year earlier than the other 2.
*PROBLEM* TWO of the phones (the newer purchased Tilt 2's) we are getting alerts for high data usage from ATT. Looked at the ATT data logs, sure enough they have high data usage, large amounts at odd times. like 20mb - 100+mb transfers in the late night early morning, during the day. Not good, it is all adding up quick with no suspect in sight. The 2 users with this problem, use the phone data less than I do for day to day tasks and I am way under the alert limit, its not something they are causing---some of these data periods are while the user is ASLEEP (and no, we do NOT use MS myphone sync). Its got to be a phone software or software compatibility with the newer Tilt 2 hardware or something. I tried a couple different ROMS, same problem. Right now we are all on Energy.RHODIUM.21684.Sense2.5.Cookie.sencity.Nov.08
Radio: 4.49.25.77 (best signal in our area) Michigan
Please help. Thanks to anybody who can provide some guidance.
MOD feel free to close this thread since nobody seems to be able to help, I will try the ROM Devel thread instead.
what are your settings for weather , mail and Google locations services ?
I set all my mail to check once a day, and manually update it as needed, same for weather...also have you turn off any other automatic services ...

Okay first off i am sure you can monitor your data service, so pick a start time and turn your mail/weather setting to once a day, turn off location service , watch it for 24 hr's then only change the location setting back on for the next 24 hrs leaving the mail and weather the same...compare the results...if it is still using high data, then flash a stock rom...if the usage is still high then i suspect it is a hardware issue..just a guess but it kind sounds like it..
There was a PPC "virus" that was passed around not long ago where the program that was installed contained an executable that would dial long-distance numbers late at night. Try comparing the list of installed programs on the affected devices to the stable devices. Most likely, this sounds like a user generated issue. Feel free to post the list of installed applications here. I will try them out if/when I can find them.
I haven't used it before but have seen it recommended several times on this site...SPB Wireless Monitor (http://www.spb.com/pocketpc-software/wirelessmonitor/) should be able to tell you what's using the data on your phones.
I wonder if this has anything to do with it (SEEING THAT BOTH OF OUR USERS WITH THE PROBLEM WERE LINKED TO YAHOO MAIL ACCOUNTS! And not the rest of us)
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-20030159-75.html?tag=cnetRiver
And yes i realize this ref's phone 7 OS, but still...fishy
For the last couple of week my phones system apps have been using appx 10-15Mb per day in 3G data and I have no idea why.
It's chewing up most my allowance and I'm going to have to disable the APN soon if I can't find out what's causing it.
I know it's a system app as i'm using TrafficStats Lite but it doesn't tell me exactly what the source of the problem is. It lists the below under the section that is causing me the problem:
Contracts Storage
Dialer
People
com.android.providers.applications
Plugin sample
com.android.providers.userdictionary
Hi,
first of all try market://search?q=pname:com.curvefish.apps.trafficinfo
shows trafffic per app
maybe you try to disable background sync?
a other option would be droidwall, so you can enable every app that should get internet access and the others wont get it - needs root.
cya
TrafficInfo doesn't give me any better info than TrafficStats Lite.
Also, disabling background sync doesn't tell me why the system is suddenly using up 10-15mb a day when it has never used anything like that in the 10months i've had it.
Droidwall will be useful in the short term until I can find out why my system apps are using so much data though.
Thanks.
Hi,
Sorry to bring up this old thread, but since a month or so I have been noticing the exact same thing on my HTC Legend. Got a 500MB monthly limit, never got even close to consuming it all... but in November, data usage got crazy and I hit the limit.
3G Watchdog shows me these apps as the top data consumer: "People", "com.android.providers.userdictionary", "Dialer", "Contacts Storage" and "com.android.providers.applications". These all show up as one combined entry, and for example have consumed 9MB only yesterday.
Anyone know what exactly is going on here?
Thanks for any advice,
