Will it be ok to have zipped files on scard? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have 2 roms and a few zipped font files, should i remove them out or no harm?

No harm. Just don't take it to Sprint if those are on there.

You'll be ok

I have numerous on mine and its never caused a problem. I've even made folders for them, lol. Misc. flashes, kings Rom, Myns Rom, etc. Easier to remember if you put stuff like that in folders where you know where they are and not search for them while flashing
Sent from "The EVO" using XDA Premium

yeah there is no problem. zip files don't really do nothing unless they are flashed

I have all needed files for un-root on my SD card. Just in case that I need them...

I put mine up on my Dropbox, also - the first nandroid set after rooting, the unroot s-off and the RUU.

Flashing

So when flashing a kernel or like a new radio or whatever do I flash the same way as a rom?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
As I am somewhat of a noob to all of this.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
You sir, are correct. Just wipe cache and dalvik, then flash. Backup before hand incase things go wrong.
Im just putting the roms on my phone, renaming to update.zip, and flashing. Do I rename the kernel the exact same way and all?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
No, please don't rename the roms or kernels. Just go to flash zip from sdcard and find the file.
Will and will not do! Thanks for the help.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Anytime man, happy flashing.

Stock Sprint Apps

I am running Synergy, and I installed a new SD card, partitioned per how to. No backups from 2.2 RLS5. Where can I get the Stock Sprint apps from? I use Nascar and telenav every week. My kids mess with Sprint TV. Help please.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
They should be on your sd card in a synergy folder, just mount r/w and copy to the system folder
Found them, thanks. They wont install.

Again, you dont install them, you move them to the system folder via adb or root explorer.

System/app

So I am trying to copy past browser from frozen rom to urban metamorpisis how ever my computer won't let me does anone have any ideas on how to do this
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
If you have root you could copy it to your SD card with Root Explorer from the Market. Titanium Backup would let you back it up and restore the backup on another ROM.
Needs to be pushed to system\app with root explorer. Then reboot.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I tried that won't let me push it there for some odd reason
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Did you hit the mount r/w button in the upper left hand corner of root explorer?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Yes I did I get to the app folder in system/app and then I clicked paste then I look to the folder and it didn't get placed
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Try deleting or renaming the old file first then copy and paste the new one. Are you using Root Explorer?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yes I am using root explorer I got it placed in current running rom in system/app and then re boot and look in app section and browser still not there try installing apk direct says app not installed
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
So you paste it,check it, its there, reboot and its gone?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
No I reboot check its there but the actually app is not there

Uninstalling zips

If I flash a zip on my phone and I don't like it or it doesn't work, is there anyway I can just remove with out reflashing
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
That is why you make a nandroid backup. You can't just undo flashing something
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Only way to uninstall zips is to plug your phone into your computer and find the zip file and hit delete but it is best to always check the ROM out before you back it up get it set up the way you like then back it up but always back up your stock ROM that way you can go back to it

That doesn't uninstall anything, it just deletes it off your sd card. Like the other guy said, Do a nandroid before you flash anything because flashes can't be undone. you can flash over it but you can't undo a flash.
That's basically what I was saying
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Not even lol. Deleting the .zip file is the file itself, it's already flashed to the phone. You could boot with no SD and still have your.zip flashed. Basically, you have to reflash the rom if you don't have a backup.

Haha that's nothing like u were saying bro lmao
@OP
Open the zip,
find the files it modifies inside system folder
Open ur roms zip file with 7z or similar
Find the needed files
Replace into zip overwriting with the originals ofc, follow the layout.
Put on SD
boot to CWM
Disable signatures
Flash zip
Clear cache/fix permissions if necessary, you haven't described what your flashing..
Reboot.
Done.
But if you don't make a backup of it and restore it's still on there?

If it ads files then yes technicly but by replacing the main files it wont be initiating only as the otigionals.. u can delete extras with a delete command in updater-script..
And yet again u didn't specify what you were "restoring"
Guess I need to be more specific lmao
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Yes you can remove by deleting apk just like copying apk will install (as long as it is folder you have write access to and you restart the phone).
Also keeping a copy of any apk will allow reinstall later just enable non market sources in settings use file browser select apk for install while running OS and it does not require a restart to use the app by the way). You have to use app such as titanium backup to backup your apps settings and data though.
You can also un/install using adb
Adb install blah.apk
(Google for options)
As well. Just like if you copy apks in to a ROM zip (right directories don't just drop in root; Google if needed) before flash they will also install when ROM zip is flashed (may need to re-sign but these days that usually is not required).

never mind, found it, but for some reason every time i back it up, the date is all wrong, just backed up and it is 1970-01-04.06.58.12?
In had this same question, where did you find it?

Check clockwork folder and inside there should be a folder that says backup
Sent from my SPH-L710 using XDA Premium HD app
Backups on this phone will always have the incorrect date. The recoveries do do not have access to the time.

That's weird, I made a backup with CWM before switching to TWRP and there's nothing in that folder.
Another question, where are the backups stored from TWRP? I can see them while in recovery, but not in any file explorer.
