[Q] Desire Z first time root questions, please help

Hi, I am have just got my HTC Desire Z/Vision and I am very new to rooting.
I checked on a lot of thread on how to root, s-off the phone before I can install custom ROM.
Some of the tread mention that I need to do firmware downgrade if my device has firmware version higher than 1.34, but I am not sure on my version and therefore I include my information below.
What is the easier way to root my phone?
If I use gfree, do I need to downgrade my firmware? Is there any side effect when I downgrade my firmware?
If I use VISIONary, do I need to downgrade my firmware?
Do I need to do S-Off in order to install custom ROM? or is rooting enough?
Hell a lot of question but I hope you guys can help me out with it.

First, welcome to the boards, it's always nice to welcome people into the world of rooting and flashing (the android kind!).
To start, you will have to get ADB installed and working. To do this, download the Android SDK from here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html . make sure you have the Java SDK and JDK installed as well as the Android SDK requires that as a requirement.
Based on your information, you have the 1.82 system software and will need to downgrade. I am not 100% sure if this guide will be applicable to you since it was written for the 1.72, but look at this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
The above guide will help you in downgrading to 1.34, gaining root with gfree/rage, SIM-Unlock and S-OFF, installing ClockWordMod (a.k.a CWM) and flashing a new and shiny ROM for you.
I can completely understand how confusing alot of these guides can be, I spent about 3 hours trying to do the same thing as you a month ago. A year ago, I did the same thing with my old HTC Hero! So if you have any questions, just ask away. XDA is a great community.

There are alot of fixes and improvements that HTC made between the 1.34 version and the newest 1.84 version. Those would be found with HTC in their changelogs. Also, each of these upgrades breaks the root access that the devs have created. Similar to that of iOS breaking each jailbreak method with each new version of iOS that is released (you will understand this analogy if you have an iPod Touch or something along those lines).
After gaining root, SIM-Unlock and S-OFF, installing CWM would allow you to perform a NANDroid backup (an EXACT image of your current installed ROM) so that you can go back to it at a later time.
If you are like myself (and seems that you are) you love how HTC's Sense overlay works and it just gets you. Keeps things simple while being infinitely customizable. When you do get around to flashing, I would recommend Virtuous as your ROM of choice. It is what I am running right now with no ill effects. The link to Virtuous is in my signature below.
If this is your first time flashing a custom ROM on an Android device, I can promise you that you will NEVER have a reason to go back to the stock ROM unless your phone is damaged physically and needs warranty repair. Even then, it is sometimes cheaper and easier for you to order the parts online and DIY your repairs (did it for my brother's BB Storm when he broke the screen).
Going back to my Hero, I have the stock Android 1.5 image saved somewhere, but I have never had to go back to it. Always found another newer/better custom ROM to flash. With my current DZ, I was fortunate enough to have stumbled onto Virtuous.

Yes, you're right. I like HTC Sense so I don't know if I will get used to the custom ROM without it.
I have checked on the Virtuous ROM previously and I will give it a try.
Yes, I saw plenty of decent ROM, they have nice UI but as you know first time rooting does give me goosebumps.

I bumped into a problem as I try to downgrade my firmware.
I followed the guide on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261 and I encountered error on step 11, when the phone goes into bootloader mode and tries to scan PC10IMG.zip file that I copied into the SDCard.
It said 'CID' incorrect!, Update Fail!
Anybody knows why I might have this issue? Is this because of the firmware difference as mentioned by Athrun88?

As stated in the thread you are using to downgrade, your CID must be one of the following:

IF its not in the above list you must make a gold card first then use the thread that you listed to downgrade. To check your CID run the following commands:

There is a link in the thread you listed on how to make a gold card. The method you are trying is comfirmed to also work with 1.82. So the reason you are having problems is NOT because your on 1.82 firmware, more than likely your CID is not listed above. Solution = GOLDCARD.

I have looked into the Goldcard method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832503) and actually spent my time trying to accomplish the result.
Part 1 and part 2 are pretty straightforward but now I bumped into another problem when I tried to do part 3 as it requires me to have root access to execute the command.
I have tried to get the root access by following methods from different threads such as using rage (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228).
For this method, I tried to do temp root and I am stucked on step 5. After launching 'Terminal Emulator' and running 'rage'. I can't seem to run the 'Terminal Emulator' again. When I launched it, it Force Closes. Tried to launch it again, my phone just displayed black screen and keys doesn't seem to be responding not till I off and on the phone (not reboot).
I also tried to use Visionary too but doesn't seem to have any luck.
Is there any other method I can try to get the root access?
Another question is after I followed Part 1 of the steps in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832503, when I boot up my computer, I can't seem to go to Windows. I am sure I selected physical disk instead of logical disk but I don't know why this happen. Anybody encounter the same problem?

I'm currently in the situation of wanting to root and S-off my Desire Z in order to update, either to official or (more likely) Virtuous ROM.
However before I do so I have a couple of questions.
1) How do I back up everything on my phone? I know my contacts and calendar will be fine as they are from my google account, also my email will be ok as that is also my google account. Photos etc I can just copy to my PC but what about all the apps I've installed, and my progress in them, my pair bluetooth devices, my wifi access points, my mesage apn settings etc etc?
I have tried Titanium Backup but not having paid for the full version, the info it gives you is a little limited so i'm not sure what it's backed up etc?
2) I currently have root via using Visionary, do I need to unroot and then go through the process with all the adb stuff? Also, will i need to uninstall the SuperUser I have installed?
3) I think my ADB is setup as I managed to get it to boot the phone into the bootloader, but when Itried to check my INFOCID using

I got an error message saying that fastboot was not a recognised function (or something similar to that) Is this a problem?
ANy help really really appreciated as I am a total newb with Android but would love to move to a more up-to-date software version as I am currently on 1.34.

You could wait until HTC releases a OTA update for your phone. Or as a alternative and avoiding being impatient, you could do a lot of reading and learning on this site to apply a custom rom. It is not that difficult at all, but do not expect a step by step walking trough the minute you ask for something here.

Wow, thanks for your helpful post...
I've done loads of reading on the forum and have gone rather round in circles. I think I know what I'm doing but seeing as someone else who is new to it had posted a thread I thought I'd also ask a couple of questions that I had which were pertinent to the discussion, to firstly find out for myself and secondly to help anyone else that might be finding the thread otherwise useful.
I think I have sorted the abd problem I was having, it seems that various tools have moved to different folders in the latest version of the android sdk so when I was trying the "fastboot" line it was nt findint fastboot.exe as it was in a different folder.
Secondly I'm fairly happy to give the gfre stuff a whirl but before I do I just wanted a little confirmation about backing everything up...not a huge ask really and fairly essential I would say!

You can use Astro File Explorer to back up your apps, Call Logs Backup and SMS backup will backup the sms threads and call logs or if you want to spend a couple of bucks Root explorer works well for me also. Once you have CWM you can make a Nandroid backup and will have an exact image of you phone at that point in time that you can go back to. I am waiting for my DZ to arrive and currently using an Inspire and 2 Captivates that other than minor differences in the procedures the backup maintenance is the same. The problem is that if you downgrade to a rom that allows CWM you cant back up the existing newer one. There are copies of it out there though. Just be careful if trying to go back to it and read carefully as I understand there are possible problems going back if the correct procedures are not followed. Good luck to you and as the previous poster stated about educating yourself, I fully agree. Read until you understand then read again to make sure you are not missing something. Follow directions EXACTLY and it usually avoids problems.
Sorry I see you are on 1.34 which I think means that once you get S-Off and root you can download rom manager from the market, install clockworkmod and you will be good to go with Nandroid backups.

Help with respect to updating.

I am looking for Gingerbread update and HTC sense 3.0. Does anyone know when is the official release coming out.
If not official, can I install the one ported by moderators in this form by myself. How do I go ahead with it. From rooting to installing.
After the update will all my applications downloaded and contacts and sms be deleted. If so how can I backup those data.

It's a lot of good instructions in this forum to read. Read the posts about Rooting, getting s-off and eng s-off in the developer forum. You will also find good instructions in how to flash a radio.
I was completely lost my self, but after spending a couple of days in reading and testing I got it to work.
And yes, you will loose all your data, but you can backup your settings, apps etc. with either Myback up pro or titanium bakcup from marked. You can export your contacts to your SD card from the contact list, just hit meny and import/export.
Sense 3.0 is only in beta even in custom roms, and I dont think HTC has intended it to be integrated with the DHD. But it's a beta version you can flash after you are done with the rooting process.

In order to root and flash new rom, you need to roughly know the following
1) How to root (Visionary thread)
2) Radio S-Off
3) Eng-S Off
4) Rom Manager & ClockWorkMod
I believe after you are well acquainted with all the above, you will be able to flash any rom your heart desire Sense 3.0 might also be compatible with DHD by then

[Q] Rooting + Custom Roms: What to care about?

OK, so first of all: YES, I have read almost every sticky about this.
I just want to make sure, I'll do everything right and not destroy my phone.
My Goal:
- Root access (to disable HTCs annoying startup sound and various apps )
- Installing a fast + battery-saving + stable Sense-Based ROM
- Having the possiblity to restore everything to factory default when needed
My Phone:
HTC Desire HD w/ Android Version 2.3.3
I've read that you cannot root your device with this version. Am I right?
My Questions:
- How can I make a backup of my original Android + HTC Sense files?
- Will there be any situation that I am not able to restore anything when my Phone is messed up? (I remember my old iPhone, if something went wrong with the JB, you just needed to go into iTunes, press Restore and everything is fine)
I don't want to make a Quick Shot like read one tutorial, do it like that and boom, Phone's messed up.
Can you recommend me tutorials for:
- Creating a backup?
- Rooting my phone?
- Installing a custom 2.3.3 ROM?
- What else I need to do to perform those 3 above steps?

So OK, I've managed to come a little clearer:
1.: Permroot via Visionary - very easy, seems to work with any Android Version
2.: S-Off: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403 + Radio-S-Off: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537 - seems to be quite easy as well, BUT requires a downgrade
3.: I am able to install custom ROMs
So: To fully "unlock" my phone I'll probably need to downgrade it? But if I install custom ROMs I can basically choose any Android Version I want?
AND: What about Backups/Restore/etc. if anything goes wrong? Which security do I have?

Permroot Visionary only works on sense build 1.32 ONLY.
You will only gain temproot and have the options to:
[*] Backup data with Titanium Backup
[*] Directly downgrade to 1.32

Follow the guide carefully, as mistake will bring upon the brick lord. But you'll be safe once you've downgrade to 1.32. Plus, if its bricked anyway, just install ruu using adb and you'll be back to your stock sense.

So if something goes wrong while Downgrading I still don't have a 100% brick?
PS: Yes I discovered Visionary didn't work for 2.3.3 (even Temproot didn't work). I now try to use GingerBreak to root it and backup my current Android Version using ROM Manager. But GingerBreak is running the second time for over half an hour and nothing changes (USB Debugging enabled, SD Card Mounted)

The critical "flashes" are the bootloader and the radio. At least the radio is flashed while downgrading. I am not sure about the bootloader.
But the risk to brick your phone is very very low. But it is possible.
Edit: If Gingerbreak does not work, you have to check your build number. It is in settings, phone info, software info. The build number has be be lower or equal 2.36. If it is higher, you have to use a build number 2.50 guide to root your phone.

[Q] First steps with rooting - quick question about the necessity of the downgrading

You are on 1.84 firmware now, so I suggest to use the following guide to downgrade, even when the title says "[GUIDE] Downgrade your Desire-Z from 1.72 to 1.34 (and get root and S-OFF)".
Only perform steps 1 to 12!

Welp, I guess I am one step from bricking my phone
I already tried rooting, without downgrading, with this guide:

It didn't work - no error messages, but I was unable to start Recovery Mode.
After some trials, I was able to access the recovery mode. It displayed a red exclamation mark to me, and can't open /cache/recovery/command error - and I am unable to access some of the functions mentioned in the guide. Still, the phone starts just fine, if I don't press the volume button, so I guess no brick, yet

I am downloading now PC10IMG.zip, then I will proceed with the other guide.

Okaaay, it went fine. Whew, what an adrenaline. Now, off to installing custom roms!
Thansk for your assistance - I will still have some noobish questions. For starters:
Before I even started tinkering with flashing, I made a complete backup of contact list / call list (that was one app), a backup of SMS (other app), backup of important files, and a list of all necessary applications.
Is there an easy way, to just create some kind of restore point? For example, I will go with Virtuous Sense, install all necessary applications, and restore all my personal data. Then I would want to check different ICS rom. Can I make somehow a complete backup of everything on phone?
//Okay, I am off to sleep. Somehow, the update to Virtuous Sense didn't work.
What I did was:
1. Create a backup with Clockwork, and store in on my HDD
2. Wipe SD card
3. Wipe data/factory reset
4. Wipe cache partition
5. Wipe Dalvik cache
6. Install Virtuous Sense from *.zip file
Clockwork installed it properly, no errors were returned. Then, after rebooting, the phone freezes on HTC logo. No go. Any ideas as to what may be causing this? If there is no easy solution to this, I will return the backup in the morning... just to bring the phone back to life. If it works, well, then I will mess around with other custom roms

Sorry, didn't pay attention to what 2.2 version you were on, you wouldn't have bricked your phone it just wouldn't have worked. As for a restore point nandroids will do a full backup ie curent rom and everything. If you just want to restore apps and data use titanium backup. Sms backup apps can restore call logs and messages accros roms, google sync keeps all contacts. Also various apps (color note, etc) may have backup options for those paticular apps.

Okay, everything is fine today
My Desire Z is fully rooted, with Virtuous Sense rom. All necessary apps installed, all contacts and SMS's are now properly synced, and I made a nandroid backup, just in case. That's just the start though - I am attracted to MIUI/Cyanogenmod (Sense UI is sometimes a little slowish, I want to know if the performance boost will be worth losing the nice UI), so I will be trying different roms in the following days.
One more question: What about the Radio changing? Which Radio configuration should I choose? Is it a matter of trial and errors? Or should I stay with the default one (I don't even know how to check, which one I have now)? Any good guides on messing with this?

don't mess with radio in case you have major issues.
Too change it, grab one off this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809 and flash it according to the instructions there.
Don't bother asking which radio is the best. It's always different for everyone.

[SOLVED] New HTC Desire (Android) user, need help

Before all jump on me being noob, yes I watched video and read rules. I hope I post this thread in place where it belongs.
I am not native English speaker so please don't throw me in fire if you see some writing errors.
I have always been Nokia user, from 1995 to this day, and now I got HTC Desire, it is old but I got it for free, it was in the box almost 1-2 years (never used) and that person discovered it before a month and gave it to me because he don't need it.
This thing is along first editions by the look of it, Android 2.1 Eclair, Amoled
I have updated it to latest official update (as I can remember 2.2.2)
I got spare MicroSD card (8GB class 10) and it working good with it (looks better then 4GB one I got with phone)
I also added some aps etc..memory was soon filled..I saw on Google that its common problem.
Now after some intro..lets go to my questions..
1. My goal is to root device and put best/stable rom with HTC Sense thing, mostly for additional memory on SD and as I did understand better control and speed of my phone - is that correct?
2. Is it possible to back-up EVERYTHING on my phone, store it to PC, and return it if I am not happy with new ROM, so I can continue to use it exactly where I left it with all my apps and file there?
3. I really don't know anything about android (some things I have read about rooting on google..) so I would need help, someone to point me at correct tutorials and rom to download. Maybe I am Android noob but I am good with PC so dont worry I will make some noob mistakes while rooting and adding new rom.

the most difficult question would be, which ROM to use. you said you'd like to keep Sense.
well here is an overview of every ROM you can get for your desire:

find out the differences between them, and then decide which one suits you best. but don't be afraid to try non-sense (haha, no pun intended ) ROMs.
now some explicit answers:
(1) yes, almost every ROM allows you to move internal storage to your SD and some even speed up your device. with some you could experience reboots now and then, but thats rather rare.
(2) yes, you can backup everything. there are two ways to do that:
a - NANDroid backup: it creates some kind of an image (like the .ISO is the image of a DVD), which can be restored, so that your phone looks the same as before.
i recommend it every time you change or update your ROM. NANDroid backups are available after you rooted and S-OFF'd your device.
b - there are many apps on the market to backup nearly every part of your user data. the most popular is Titanium Backup. it can make a copy highscores, user input like passwords, bookmarks of your browser, and so on.
contacts can usually be secured via your googlemail account.
all of those backups can and will be placed on you SD card, from where you can easily copy them to your desktop pc.
question 3 is already answered...keep an eye out for sticky threads (the ones pinned on top of every sub-forum) and you will find all the information needed.

The easiest way to learn about android is to test it out..play with it as much as you want and about rooting use revolutionary, it's the fastest and easiest method.Also, about restoring your Rom, you can do that by backing it up in recovery, nandroid backup as they call it.

the two guides linked in the posts 2 and 3 are quite outdated. neither even mention revolutionary.
revolutionary does not give you root. it performs s-off. root comes after flashing the superuser.zip.
@OP, i always recommend this set of guides, which explain a bit more in detail about what everything is first, so you can get an understanding of what you're doing before you do it (just as important!). the video guide is also useful to take you through the actual process.
take your time, i'm sure you'll eventually find what you want :good:

Can anyone point at step-by-step tutorial of how to just make my phone have additional memory on SD card, I want to keep my official 2.2.2. ROM with all apps installed.
As I understand I need to root phone and make some linux partition on SD.
Now, I don't know how to keep apps already installed etc so thats where you guys step in with tutorials for my problem.
Few things to keep in mind:
I dont want S-OFF if not needed
I dont want to change my RADIO, ROM or whatever.
Just additional memory on SD card.

in that case you should take a look at this:

it's an application that allows you to move apps to your 2nd SD partition. no need to flash ROMs or anything else.
the only premise is that you need root.
i don't know if this app has any disadvantages...
but i recommend you to take a closer look at flashing ROMs anyways, because most people (including me) claim that their phone was kinda revived with a new custom ROM.
it's really worth a try. sure, there's a huge amount of reading involved, but in the end it's simpler than you think.

first you need root to install titanium backup then, you can take complete backups of your apps, cuz installing a custom ROM will surely destroy the apps.......just take your time, you'll get it........ I took 3 Weeks like you , reading, searching and reading some more..... Then i started doing, and all things fell in place., 1 year has passed and not looking back....

it does take a lot of time to understand it all, that's a good thing. many people with no experience with rooting have used the guides successfully
as above, links2sd should work. however, i was exactly the same, thinking i didn't want a custom rom, just thought i wanted more memory. but a custom rom is well worth the time when you find the right one for you. :good:
the guides will show you how to partition sd card properly (gparted or 4ext recovery)

s-off is not absolutely necessary, but is much more versatile, and more useful if things go wrong in the future. revolutionary will perform s-off anyway, and is ideal for your hboot version. don't be scared of it.
upgrading radio is not absolutely necessary

So after all readings and courage building, today I have decided to run operation X (lol)
Here is what I have done for now:
1. Done many things with PC drivers and comms PC-Mobile
2. S-OFF via Revolutionary
3. Denied CUSTOM RECOVERY from Revolutionary, read somewhere that 4EXT Recovery Touch is better. (I hope I didn't do something wrong with this decision)
4. Installed 4EXT Recovery Touch - custom recovery
5. From Recovery installed Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed
Now, it looks like I have now HTC Desire with S-OFF and root.
If I understand correctly now I can install titanium backup and also do nandroid backups.
After all backups I do, then I can proceed to new custom roms, extend memory to SD etc..still I am not sure do I want do more then extend mem.. Well, with time I will probably explore new roms just for fun or whatever.
But for today I have done enough (too much stuff in short time for newbee ))
BTW for now all has gone without problem or errors.

Why too much? On my first day i corrupted my nand guess it couldnt hold out on so much flashing in one day.. ) anyway have fun with your new toy
