I've had my g2 for about 4 months now and I'm quite happy with it. Rooted with perm s-off, running about 4 different roms, blahblahblah. I have the full data plan for my phone, and I've used it passed the data cap through all my billing cycles so far.
However, I live in hawaii. The data here is unbearably slow. Using speedtest, I see people with scores of 4mb down and 1mb up.
I average ALMOST 0.3mb down 0.9mb up. that's with 3g on, if you couldn't guess.
I've already tried flashing different radios for my phone, but it only minamally increases my data speed for a huge increase in battery consumption.
Am I stuck here, to wander a 2g world with my almost-but-not-really-4g phone? Help me out if you'd care to lend a hand, I'm kind of sick of seeing the buffer icon permanently on youtube.
Toodles.

The phone is 4g. That doesn't mean your area has it though. Have you bothered to call you service provider to make sure you are connected to the proper tower? I had data speeds like yours but found my phone was trying to connect to a tower in a completely different city.

There's kind of no tower in, around, or relatively close to hawaii. The closest tower is in L.A I believe, which is the one I'm connected to. So no matter where I go on the island, the signal stays around there.

You're not getting 2G speeds. 2G speeds is edge which is at BEST and THEORETICALLY a little under 250 kbps. You're doing decent for 3G. If it was a 4G connection you'd see "H" instead of "3G".

That doesn't seem possible. there has to be some sort of cell towers on one of the islands there. Carriers use each others towers at times to. I know the internet out there can get screwy at times so I understand your frustrations...write your local congress person lol

You're right, the OP can't possibly be correct about there being no cell towers in Hawaii. The max range of a GSM tower is about 22 miles in the best of conditions, and almost always much less. Towers have to be placed as close as 1/2 mile apart in some terrain or urban conditions. 1 to 2 miles apart is average in many conditions.

Even if you're rooted, that symbol will not show unless you've got a theme or rom that is set to show HSPA+ in the status bar.
Download mobile signal widget, it will tell you whether or not you are actually on HSPA+.

How do you know if you are getting HSPA+ on your g2?
Download speedtest.net. after you run the test go to results and click on one of them. Scroll down to network and if you are on 3g or 2g it will say cell. If you are connected to hspa+ it will display utms. Also you can generally tell by the speeds you get from running the test.

I got Mobile Signal Widget from Android Marker. It's really nice. Will show a H, 3G, E, G, etc depending on what you're connected to.
Same here really good tool. It's helping me in seeing what freaky stuff my phone is doing with data and signal strength. I think I'm in a poor spot and I'm going to try to spend some time in another spot where the coverage is known better and see if I get the same issues.

Lol first off krashunist, you also are making yourself look like an idiot. It obvious I'm not spamming. Second I would try and drive around a bit to differnt locations in your area just to confirm that it not your phones that's faulty but the actual network. If you see that your connecting to 4g is different areas just gotta wait till they refine and improve the network to work in your specific area. Believe I'm going through the same exact thing here in miami.

How does lte work? Is it like wimax, based off of a wifi sort of function? Or is it a stable connection like 3g?

Lol, the connection strength isn't too shaby... It does disconnect often but that is because number one, the coverage is still somewhat spotty and two this phone has that "best connection" thing where it automatically picks the best coverage spectrum. So when i'm at home it always wants to pick my wifi since it's the strongest signal... the pic was actually taken while driving which was even more impressive... i wish there was a way to manually enable LTE like Wimax because sometimes you're in an area where u know there is 4g coverage cuz u got it b4 but the phone may not be scanning when u happen to drive thru that area. But once it is more widely deployed it will be like 3g where u can get it everywhere and provide a stable connection.
4rth said:

LTE is the next step 4th generation in wireless radio data transmission(although none of the carriers are actually providing true 4g speeds yet, the capacity is there)... unlike wimax it doesn't have a completely separate antenna that has to be manually switched on and off... its a different radio frequency but runs off of the same antenna as your standard 3g if im not mistaken... eHRPD tells the phone when to switch from 3g(CDMA) to LTE... as stated above once the deployment is widespread it will be a stable connection just like 3g... but thats years at minimum b4 we see that kind of coverage...

In Joliet, IN for business and I'm getting between 17 and 20 down and 4 to 6 up. Not bad considering I'm not getting anything in North Dallas where I live even though the Sprint Coverage map has me completely covered in LTE.....Sprint Coverage map sucks to be honest.
I have yet to see 4g LTE in my status bar and I live in SF area. Is there a toggle bar somewhere or in the settings area? I'm using blazer ROM
Thanks
So i was walking along the road and then when i looked at my phone i saw a H above my signal bar and i screenshotted it. It switched between H and E, then 3g also appeared, but i couldnt get a shot of it because it disappeared quickly.
so now im wondering is 3g/hsdpa possible on a lg nitro using a tmobile sim because when i look around the forums people said only edge is available.
It's possible that you were roaming onto the AT&T network due to getting no T-Mobile signal for a brief period of time. The phone won't be able to get 3G on T-Mobile's network though.
It works!

That has to be why. The Nitro definitely doesnt support AWS bands for 3G/4G.
Just wanted to issue in case anyone wanted to save some money. I live in Kansas city and just started Wal-Mart family mobile service and I am getting 3g and hspa signal on my unlocked att p930. That being said, it does look like the data speed itself is throttled to 1mb/s up and down. I'm wondering if it's possible to change that by messing with the apn...

Yes it appears that it's deployed throughout Kansas city and even about an 80 mile plus radius of the city. My device picks it up but family mobile have the speeds throttled down to .9mbps up/down no matter what. Very frustrating seeing the H symbol and not being able to break 1mbps anyone have any ideas?

4G and 3G are not actually different for Tmobile.
Wikipedia article on Evolved HSPA
So then, the question is how to turn off DC hspa. Which is probably not accessible through the maintenance menus.
But for many real world value metrics I don't know what you would gain.

I'm wondering if the OP came from Sprint? Sprint's 4G was a separate (battery sucking) radio that you could turn on and off and needed to in order to protect the battery usage.
4g on TMo isn't like LTE, it's not a separate modem to turn off like AT&T, VZW, or sprint. It's really a hopped up version of 3G. Your choices are 3G/4G or Edge.

On T-Mobile, there is no real differentiation between 3G and 4G. Both operate on the same spectrum. The only difference is the speeds. However, that is controlled, not by your phone, but by the tower you're connected to. It's easier to look at it as the same exact technology. For the purpose of this conversation, there is no more T-Mobile 3G. It's all 4G, or HSPA+, service now. The 3G brand has been retired in favor of the 4G moniker.
To put it all simply, 3G is the same as 4G on T-Mobile. To turn off 4G, you would drop down to 2G, or EDGE/GPRS, service.

And if you still want to do it.....go to settings - more settings - mobile networks - network mode and you can select "GSM only".
Strangely enough....there are a couple areas around where i live that my phone will show a 4G connection and absolutely refuses to open anything. I've found that if i switch to the "GSM only" option in those areas that at least i can get it working... slowly, but better than nothing.

LTE is super spotty where I live and really inconsistent. In my state capitol I get LTE and it's around 2mbs. I alternate between 3g/LTE from block to block with 100% signal strength on stock rom. In some hicktown with a population of 1,000 people LTE gets 20-30mb/s. Regarding Sprint, you are lucky to get LTE at all, I'd be happy.
ATT HSDPA+ gets 1-3mb/s everywhere in my state. I'll be changing soon.
