This has started recently and only seems to effect vertical scrolling. Swiping through homescreens is smooth as butter.
Any app that requires vertical scrolling is very laggy. Sometimes so bad that it will stutter and the scrolling takes off on its own.
I have tried numerous roms and kernels to no avail. I even get this on 2.3 as well.
It will even do this while in the settings menu.
I used system panel to check for an app that might be using resources but none are, at idle CPU usage is around 4%.
When I scroll up or down within the app CPU usage goes as high as 50%.
I have tried VM heap at 24 and 32 with similar results, also bfs vs cfs its still the same.
I'm beginning to wonder if its a hardware issue as it was never this laggy before.

I would agree and say it's hardware, or simply the LCD screen is going bad. If it happens on all different and kernels though, I would deduce that it's hardware or lcd screen. I've actually been having an issue, where like you said, the vertical scrolling will just take off, like i swiped super fast, but I didn't. I don't have any other stuttering though, just when it takes off and scrolls to the bottom of the page in a milisecond.

I think its the LCD as well. During normal scrolling when I place my finger on the screen and move it my finger will move 1/2" before it actually starts scrolling.

I'm pretty sure Sprint should replace that, considering it's not cracked or shattered. If I understood correctly when I read the new policy, if the screen has a crack of less than 1", they'll replace it, otherwise you'd need to send it in. Since yours seems to be defective, and isn't cracked, I would think they should cover that. I'd definitely check with sprint, and see what the deal is with that. If mine gets worse I'll probably do the same thing, but right now it's not enough for me to bring it in. I've had incredibly good luck with this Evo, I got it a week after launch day. Not one issue with it, ever.

I will probably go back to stock and take it in this weekend and see what they say. Thanks for the advice, I kinda thought I might have to take it in.

Hello all! Ive just recently got my Xperia arc, and flashed a nightly build of CM7 on it, number 20. Everything seemed to run smoothly, but just now screen started to behave very weird, it almost seem to have osme kind of "ghostly" second touch.
The upper part of the screen is almost impossible to use, when I try select an app to move it on the screen, by holding finger down, it just flickers for a second and gets deselected. If I manage to select it and drag+hold, it starts spazing out all over the screen, with screens switching between eachother by it self.
The problem is especially noticeable in games, where you usually have a joystick controller in bottom left corner. When using it, I usually trigger the buttons above it in the upper left corner which I am no where near at with my finger.
Is this a ROM issue, or hardware issue? Ive been using the rom for couple of days with no strange to it, and now this happens. Any ideas what the source can be?
ROM failure.
Sorry for bump, but apparently the problem remained. I changed to XDA rom, which too is based on CM7 thou and after a day I stumbled upon same problem of ghotsly second touch on screen.
I cant hold to move apps, cant precisely press a button in game on left side of screen, it then triggers some other button nearby. I do get haptic feedback from long press on a homescreen, but the "add new" menu popups only every few tries Any ideas of what may be causing this? I would really like to avoid the hassle of resetting the phone and sending it back for repairs :/
try stock one or miui.
It sounds a bit like your screen had a bad encounter with water...
Could this be the case?

No, this phone is only few days old.
I think I am noticing a pattern.. screen behaves this way only late evenings, till next morning. I never noticed the issue during the day, but then it was there again for no reason after I left phone for couple of hours (it's past midnight here at the moment). Now when I think back, same was previous two evening, issue only noticeable during late evenings. Could my phone be possessed lol?
It's quite weird issue too. Upper half of the screen seems to have a ghost touch as I said. When trying to add a widget to upper screen, I only get a haptic feedback from long press. When playing games, all buttons on left side (landscape mode) get activated as soon I press one of them. Most weird of all, is that screens works perfectly in app drawer and settings, but not in app/homescreen. I will test how it is again tomorrow and report. If it works just fine again as if nothing happened I will be really puzzled.
Currently on CM7 Xda version, same was for official version. I am considering updating to MIUI, just gotta figure this radio difference stuff, but am becoming sceptic to whether this issue really lies with ROM and not app/settings.
Yep, issue is gone like nothing happened at the morning, this is is haunted ._.
I've figured the cause, it only happens when the phone is plugged in and charging. Beats me why thou, what remains to see now is if it is tied to the kernel or not. Posting it here in case others with similar problem stumble upon the thread.
Are you using the stock charger, i used to face bit similar problem when i used to connect my old HTC USB charger... later i discover the HTC charger was giving only 500mA , where as sony one is rated at 700mA.

I left my A100 in my purse in the car for a few hours. It was about -5C outside.
When I took my purse inside, and woke up my tablet, it started acting up.
The touch screen acted as if there were multiple touches at various places. Icons on the desktop would appear to be selected, and apps would open and close randomly.
Eventually it calmed down after warming up to room temperature.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour? Is this a normal effect on capacitive touch screens?
Does not even need to be this cold... I left the tablet on the floor of my bedroom for the night, and the same thing append to me... ( the floor get cold during night... )

This is not suprising, all devices have a normal operating tempature and your lucky your device wasnt damaged. It would be the equivlant of sticking your phone in the freezer. If there was any humidity built up in your device it could have formed ice crystals on the internal components and wreaked havok.

It has usually been in the mornings when acting this way. I thought we had this pinned as the digitizer, but it sounded rather familiar to my issue.
Edit: After a trip to the freezer for a couple minus, i can confirm the actions from my video are caused by the cold.
Guess i can call Acer back to cancel my work order.

My A100 used spaz out in the the exact same manner as shown in the above youtube video, the exact same area of the screen (lower right). When I say "used to", I mean it still happens from time-to-time but less often. I keep it on my office desk most the time now so it doesn't have wild changes in temps.
I actually somehow lost my 'system tray' from it spazzing out, I haven't been able to find a way to get it back, and am not interested in factory resetting it.
Originally I attributed it to my ZAGG screen protector messing with the touch detection. But it does seem to be attributed to temperature. However I've never left the thing outside in my car overnight in extreme cold.

No, i never have left it outside freezing, and i only put it in the freeze for a minute to test it. Most of my occurrences are in the morning. Prolly 65 in the house, 40_50 outside. Go outside to read the news and drink coffee. Usually dies fine till i set it down for a few and come back to it. Doesn't have to be extreme cold it seems. I still believe it's digitizer related, but maybe only sure to cooler temps.

It's funny you mention the system tray is hidden, because I swear the floor model at BB was like that, I think from swiping up and down on the home screen. I'll have to go back there and check it again.

If you ever figure that out, I'd love to know what you did to replicate it.
I have noticed that my screen is flickering ever so slightly in all applications. it is bearable but slightly annoying. Could this be hardware related and will I have grounds for a warrenty replacement? should I wait and see if any OTAs resolve it?
Everything is stock. Brightness is set to auto.
I have problems with shadowgun crashing when there is an explosion etc. possibly related?

Yeah, i noticed this too on my One X I've mostly seen it while my mobile data connection was on, and it seems to decrease a lot but not completely disappear when it's off. I also got a weird message yesterday while charging, saying something along the lines of "your phone is using too much current, -" (the message was in dutch, not sure what the exact message is in english) my phone turned off before I could completely read it. I wonder if those issues are somehow related. Maybe the screens backlight isn't getting enough power when the radio is on. Anyways, I'm not an expert, so don't quote me on that.
I also heard the tegra 3 drivers are buggy, so shadowgun crashing and performance drops etc. will hopefully be resolved in future updates.
I've got it as well I think it's a driver issue the last thing I want to do is go for a replacement and that to have more dud stuff as this is the only dud thing on mine. Everything else is fine apart from flickers now and then.

@backstabz0r for screen flickering pls refer to my earlier ans and for your problem which you got warning message thats common warning you get when you have put phone in charge and if you using it for gaming which consumpts more nergy then, message will be" battery consumption is more then the supply"
so suggest ou to let battery get charged till 30 % and then use it for gaming or any other apps
I've read a few threads here regarding the flicker and it seems some people are confusing flicker with something that I really don't know what to call.
Flicker for me is when there's a stroboscope-ish effect, like when you place your sight just above an old CRT monitor, or when a fluorescent light is on it's last breath. Not when what you see on the screen makes random movements a few pixels in any direction.
I have flicker on my HOX. But it's only noticeable on lower brightness levels. This happens in all applications and in settings menu, everything with white or light grey background, so not related to badly written apps. But I wonder if this really CAN be software related? Has this happened with other models from various manufacturers?

I've got what your describing quite a few users have. I believe it could be down to the drivers for the Soc. Might just need a driver update. Only the next update we can tell if this fixes the issue or not. We need to pressure HTC regarding this issue.

But is it really possible that a driver issue can cause flicker? I've never seen it before.
I tweeted @htcdev earlier today about it but no response yet. I wonder what the best way to make htc aware of this is. Contacting their lousy customer support feels pointless, it won't reach the people who actually can make an impact.

Right guys untick animations in Developer options, restart give it a while, go into camera you'll notice glitches, play a YouTube video you'll notice green bar on the left hand side of the screen in full screen mode. Untick animations and this disappears. It's worrying not sure what to do now.
Edit: can't repeat this but will keep trying as something did trigger it off for the screen to go like that.
Yeah, with flicker I didn't mean anything like having low fps when scrolling through stuff. I meant a quite noticable fluctuation in the brightness of the backlight if that makes sense. It is indeed quite like a CRT monitor with a low refresh rate. I haven't seen it yet when my screen brightness was high, but I'm not sure if it doesn't occur on higher brightness settings. It is also not constantly flickering, It only seems to act up when my mobile data connection is active, although I have seen a very slight flickering with data turned off. I really hope this isn't a hardware issue, the rest of my phone is pretty much perfect and I'd rather not send it in for a replacement after all the trouble I had with my sensation :/
I have the flicker issue, the screen flickers near the center a little bit to the right though, and it is reall irratating, but i can only see it when viewing pictures and on greys.
I hope it isn't hardware!!
tried all the ideas given to stop it but none work for me, still seems to flicker
Me too
I have the screen flickering too.
Im reluctant to return it as apart from this the handset is solid.
It on appears on certain colours making me think its software related.
I also have the exact same flicking issue. From what I have heard it is a software issue rather than a hardware issue. Just to be on the safeside though I am returning my One X to Phones4U for a replacement. Will be interesting to see if the replacement has the same issue.
I made a thorough check yesterday. I downloaded a brightness control app where you can write what brightness level you want so i tried from 3% which was the lowest possible step by step up to 15%. At 15 the flicker stops so its not 30 as I said before. this is my only issue too so I dont dare to replace it just to get a worse phone. My sister is getting one next week so gonna compare them.

I noticed this too, but i believe its a software issue only. When I unlock the phone, the screen flickers while sense runs and the three menu button appears then goes. Once its all settled its fine. I believe this is to do with sense rather than a phone issue, and will be addressed via OTA.

EDIT

---
I'm creating a new thread for this problem got an answer there telling me it's my phone, but I would like to know if somebody else notice this.
It's like on good old CRT. Got a Note I (got stolen) bought a Note 2 and I can see a flickering, like if the display had a 60Hz refresh rate, never notice such a thing with the Note I.
It's more noticeable on white screens. And when you are using peripheral vision, by pointing your eyes like 10 centimeters from the side of the device, the flickering must be more visible
The effect looks like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3jHOwE8MqA not mine but can give an idea of the problem.
Thanks

My scraan is flickering too. Feels like old CRT TV. When brightness not at 100% level I can observe this problem. Looks like samsung using PWM to control brightness. I think this is terrible. And I hope this can be fixed by software (adjust brightness by gamma correction etc)
mine also sometimes flickering on the lock screen in the near clock area for about 0,5-1 sec. but no need to worry, i guess its a hidden samsung note 2 feature...
So there are no solutions to fix screen flickering? Maybe we can overclock screen somehow? Maybe alternative brightness control?
The screen flicker mus be due to a bad batch of screens. Mine had the screen flickering too. and even with economy mode shut down and brightness is set to less then 100%. if you rapidly move the phone you can see that you see several screens instead of a blurry moving screen. this way you know it flickers. so for example if you move your phone up and down very rapidly instead of seeing a blurry view of the screen you will see several edges of the screen simultaniously. this tells you its flickering. While just looking at the screen you wont actually see the flickering but its somehow disturbing.
The way i know that your screen is defect is because due to a rescent replacement of my screen on my note 2 the flickering is totally gone now.
But keep in mind that my battery usages with screen on has increased. so i think samsung changed the power management for these new screens so that they wont flicker anymore. but they consume more power now. first i used the screen 6,5 hours and had a standby of 24 hours. now i have 6 hours screen on time with 24 hours standby. so its a bit of a change though. I just tested it 1 time. so it could also be i used the phone in another way when getting only 6 hours.
But just to let you guys know the flickering can be fixed.
Just read the review by PC Mag, and I have to admit it's making me a little hesitant to pick up the phone Sunday. Essentially when the phone gets warm it auto dims the screen. I wish he posted more details about the issue.
I've been jazzed about the phone for a couple of weeks now, but it does have some drawbacks for me right out of the box. The non-removable battery, the lackluster camera, and lack of micro-sd slot on the Sprint version. Still I could live with those issues, by and large, but the dimming issue reported by PC Mag has me to the point where I'm reconsidering buying in.
I'm hoping people who get this phone over the weekend weigh in with their experience on the issue.
Here's the relevant excerpt:
"One big problem: I did most of my testing with the screen brightness set to maximum. I noticed it dip considerably after about 10 or 15 minutes of benchmarking. When I checked on it in the phone's Settings, I saw the brightness level had dropped down to 66%. I tried to turn it back up, and got the message, "Unable to brighten more due to high temperature. Try again later." I encountered this issue on multiple occasions. Especially when using processor-intensive applications like games, the top half of the phone becomes increasingly warm. LG claims it has not encountered this issue, but two test units as well as our AT&T model of the phone did the same thing."

Who keeps their phone on max brightness? 66 is twice what my brightness is set on :/
But yes, I will agree that it's an unusual thing to force user to take those measures.

Totally agree. That's why I'm sort of waiting with anticipation for people to get them in their hands and report their experience with that issue. I've got my current phone set to like 30% most of the time, so this is workable, but there are times when I need that brightness maxed out for a significant length of time.
I'm hoping the reports are good. I really want this phone.
If the phone overheats I'm going to ask Sprint to cover the restocking fee when I return it. On the contrary, that's the only review that has mentioned overheating that I could find though.

Yeah but they said it happened with three test sets, with both the AT&T and the Sprint hardware versions. Looks like it dims by design given the warning message they received. That tends to indicate LG knows they run hot on heavy usage.

That's not good news, I'm going to stay optimistic with it since it's already on the UPS truck and if it overheats on any normal use I will return it as defective. In all fairness, I've never had a smartphone that didn't overheat, especially during tethering.

I haven't encountered the error yet, it runs a bit warm, but I keep my screen at about 36% to save battery.
My screen brightness is at 40% and looks great.
People have to understand the powerful hardware runs hotter. It's physics and unfortunately, unlike PC, cars etc, they can't simply install a better cooling system so they use software to tone things down when things get heavy. Also, it's not "overheating" unless the phone acts erratically. Running "hot" does not qualify as "overheating".

My screen brightness is at 40% and looks great.
People have to understand the powerful hardware runs hotter. It's physics and unfortunately, unlike PC, cars etc, they can't simply install a better cooling system so they use software to tone things down when things get heavy. More like running warm, I think people might be over reacting a bit whenever this issue is brought up.
This user is reporting random reboots. Also, the sprint rep recommended they pull the battery for about a minute... on the lg optimus g.... with the fixed battery door.

Sorry to hear that. No problems yet. The camera is disappointing, but everything else is working well. The dimming issue is an issue. I was out taking pics to test the camera and needed more brightness but the phone was locked at like sixty three percent or maybe forty three i cant remember.
