[Q] Noob rom problem - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I apologize if this has been covered. I've spent my entire lunch hour using the search feature to no avail.
I followed the instructions on installing the;
[ROM][ACS] SyndicateROM Frozen 1.0.1 (Madhouse) :: EXT4 - No CIQ/speed/battery :: 3/8
Now my power button does not work (so no turning the screen back on) and when I am in the UI, if I use any of the buttons on the bottom of the phone, I get 1 short vibe, pause, three short vibes, then a reboot.
I've wiped everything that can be wiped 3-6 times and done a restore, but I still have this problem after loading this rom. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try redownloading the Rom
If that doesn't work use ODIN and flash EB13
then root and flash ACS again....

What he said. Sometimes no matter how many times you wipe, you can still get a bad flash. 3 finger to CWM, wipe x3, and flash rom again.
Good luck!

Update:
I've used Odin to go back to EB13 successfully. However, I cannot get the one click root to work now. I suspect that my file system was changed to EXT4 (I actually know that part) but that going back to EB13 didn't restore the file system and the one click root is intended for the original file system only.
Does this sound plausible? If so, how can I get my file system back to factory so I can root my phone? Or is there an ext4 root method out there for phones already on ext4?

Use the EB13 deodexed with CWM3 (EXT4) built in found in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209

This has been resolved.
I don't know why, but I tried running the one click root on another computer and it worked with no problem. I subsequently got the Frozen Rom to go on and I'm enjoying it today.
Thank you to the folks who replied. It is definitely appreciated!

[Q] Need help updating please

Hello, I've been using this website til this past december and I love it but stopped messing around with my phone because of graduate school. So the last thing I did was just update to stock dk28 modem without rooting it. Now I'm trying to catch up and need help to refresh lol.
Anyways, so yeah i'm on 2.2 (not rooted) currently and trying to update to the new syndicate rom. As the installation instruction says, I need to use odin to install the TAR and PIT and I know that is after rooting my epic. So is the rooting method the same as it was for 2.1?
Last question for now to get started, I really dont understand this part of the installation instructions in their thread properly "Then, use the CWM 3.0.0.6 One Click to install Clockwork and convert to EXT4.", so if anyone can please help me I will be more than grateful. to break down the questions, how do I install that new clockwork after updating to EB13? and how do I convert to EXT4? what is EXT4?
Sorry for all the questions andn using such a long thread just for help. Thanks.

1) odin to full eb13
2) run the cwm3.0.0.6 one click
3) reboot into recovery using 3 finger monkey grip. It well auto convert to ext4
4) flash the rom. (wipe data, cache, dalvik 3xs)
5) boot the phone (start up animation may look word)
6) boot into recovery again
7) flash the rom again (wipe data, cache 3xs)
8) your good to go

CWM One Click is a multi-purpose package. It: a) roots your phone, b) installs a flashing/backup/recovery package and c) converts your filesystem to ext4.
Do a search on how to install CWM. It's a matter of hooking your phone to a PC in USB debugging mode and then running a "run.bat" script. Now your phone is rooted and reboots, but you won't notice much different at that point (other than the Superuser App). If all you want is root, you're done.
If you want to flash a ROM then you boot into the recovery software (using the 3-finger technique).
This is where the gotchas start: The first time you do this, your file system will be automatically converted to a new filesystem: ext4 (it takes about 5 to 10 minutes). At this point, you need to be prepared: once it's converted to ext4, make sure you have an ext4-compatible ROM on your SD card that you can flash right then and there. At that point, I don't know if you can even reboot back into your stock ROM (I've always flashed a new ROM immediately, so I don't know).
Learn about the backup and restore mechanism in CWM, it's your friend.

You can run on stock eb13 with ext4 but you must flash at the minimum a ext4 compatible kernel.

[Q] Issues flashing MidNIGHT ROM 4.2 zip on stock eb13

Disclaimer:
I am new at this, I have read a lot and followed a lot of tutorials. I may not use terms correctly so please forgive me.
Problem:
I am trying to flash to MidNIGHT ROM 4.2 zip from stock eb13 on my Epic.
This is my first attempt at such a thing, i was able to successfully root my device via noobnl's instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
I am able to get rom manager installed and give it SU rights, etc. I got the full rom from the developer’s autism awareness site which is the full package. I make a backup through rom manager and reboot into CWM recovery.
I clear the data/cache 3 times and proceed to update through the zip on sd card option and point it to the midnight rom zip.
It says it is successful, i reboot and I become stuck on the samsung loading screen, I let it sit for 10min just to make sure, but no dice.
I then boot it back into recovery mode and try again multiple times which it is much faster this time but they all fail to load past the samsung load screen.
I go into the CWM recovery and attempt to load my backup, which hangs at installing cache every time.
So I am left with just booting into CWM.
I then resort do using odin to get back to eb13 and I am back where I began.
Sorry for the wall of text but I am lost and have tried to read a lot so I didn’t come on here asking random questions, but I have been working on this for a long time now and figure a forum post was due.
It wont work with CWM 2.5 and RFS. It requires CWM 3.0 and EXT4
After you ODIN back to EB13 go here:

I see now.
I used Rom manager to update my CWM to 3.0 and thought that would work with his first bullet, but I thought wrong.
I guess I dont understand RFS and EXT4, I thought rooting was rooting and noobnl's directions were the easiest for me to follow.
Much appreciated chris5h for the fast reply.
I will test this out when I get home from work.

Do you know how to Odin back to stock? Follow this thread for it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
Then when you restore, only restore data under advanced restore.
If you used Mybackup root or Titanium you can restore your apps from there, otherwise you should download them again from the market.

This is the easiest way I have found to root your phone with CWM3 and EXT4. If you don't mind using Odin I would suggest it strongly. I used it and installed Midnight ROM v4.2 and had no problems at all.
Well that was it. Thanks a lot everyone for your help. It took me like 10minutes once I had everything downloaded, much better than the hours upon hours yesterday
I officially have midnight ROM installed and I am rocking some nice speeds on my epic! Finally nice to see just what the phone is capable of.
Glad you got it. I wish people would stop using rom manager for the epic. It doesn't flash cwm

[Q] Problem with midNIGHT rom 5.2 RFS/Journaling on

I've tried to install midNIGHT rom 6 times now with the same result. I cannot install any apps from the market, titanium backup, or from sdcard. It will vibrate once at the beginning of install than again 2 or 3 times. My phone will then show the bootup animation and return to the homescreen. Ive odined back to stock and rerooted 4 times and wiped everything 3x each time. Each time I get the same result. Ive also tried reformatting my sd card and starting with a fresh download. Other roms work, just not this one. I dont have enough posts to reply to the midnight thread, so what should I try next to make it work?

MAYBE YOUR flashing the wrong rom to update from the midnight ex: if you use dk28 ... i dnt think thats gets the proper update ec05
so lets see if you flash a dI18 or better get eb13 stick rom ... now u can either flash the ec05 modem or as my phone did when i used the stock eb13 it sent me the update for ec05 then i rooted w 3.0.6 clockworkmod then i went to BONSAI .. i left BONSAi to midnight ... i wiped factory data 3x - cache petition 3x and davlik cache 3x ... then i installed the zip MIDNIGHT V5.2 JOURNALING ON .... THEN AFTER IT BOOTED .... i went back into RECOVERY and flash the ZIP EXTRAS .. bang it was magic ... lol'
but basically im tryn to give you steps that maybe something might help u or give u and idea ..... IT WORKED FOR ME .....
DISCLAIMER : im not a professional if something major goes wrong i dnt not claim responsibility ...
I have the same problem. Worked the first time I installed it but I restored back to stock. Now when I install I can't install from market. Tried odin back to stock but It still doesn't work. Haven't seen a solution in the midnight thread besides going to EXT.
I am having issues as well and cannot post a reply. I have wiped and re installed 3x but my phone will randomly turn off and I have to pull the battery to reset device. If the device stays plugged in I do not have this issue. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
You note that this version is the one with journaling enabled... have you tried the version without journaling? You can manually re-enable it by making a CWM Nandroid backup and then restoring that backup immediately after.

On the instructions for midNIGHT 5.2 with Journaling On it says not to start with a pre-rooted EC05. Start with stock EC05 and then root with CWM 2.5.5 for RFS or 3.0.0.6 if you are wanting to use the EXT4 one. There is a link for a stock EC05 on the instructions in the thread for the ROM
And how to check if the journaling is actually on or off.

I'm not sure if there's a quick and easy way to detect this through the Terminal Emulator. I tried a line of code that I believed would tell me but I didn't get the answer I was looking for. Someone else may have the answer.
The quick and dirty way, however, is to make a Nandroid backup through Clockworkmod, as you should generally just have one at all times anyway. Now turn your phone on, and pull the battery out. If when you turn your phone back on you don't encounter any FC's, then your journaling is on and your data is protected. If not, then restore your Nandroid backup you just made and that will enable journaling.
If you installed a no-journaling rom, rest assured, journaling is off if you haven't restored. Either way you should have a Nandroid backup just in case.
Note: This process has been documented and posted many many many times across XDA at this point.
I was also having this issue so I installed the EXT4 Journal On version and problem solved. No one knows why LOL.

i don't think so. the stock roms are rfs only.
Be sure to put the syndicate rom or another ec05 rom on the phone's sd card before converting to ext4 with clockword mod recovery 3. if you already converted by accident use odin to odin back to ec05 with ext4 and and root precooked in. before you do this back up your data with clockwork or something else if you can still boot into android.

I you want to root and keep the stock rom you can use one of the pre-rooted odin files. This will wipe your phone and take it back to stock rooted EC05 with RFS.
Here are instructions and links to the pre-rooted ec05 odin

1) Download Odin
2) Download and Install Windows Drivers 32bit | 64 bit
3) Download the EC05_DXC.tar.rar
4) Extract the "EC05_DXC.tar.rar" file to a folder on your hard drive to get the necessary "EC05_DXC.tar.md5" file located inside.
5) Shut down your device
6) Boot into download mode (Hold number 1 on physical keyboard and press power)
7) Start Odin
8) Plug in device via USB cable to computer, (if it's done right you should see a yellow Com device light up in one of the rectangular boxes)
9) Place the "EC05_DXC.tar.md5" in the PDA slot on Odin
10) Check Auto Reboot ONLY
12) Click start and this should only take about 2-3 minutes to complete.
13) Wait for the green light in the Com device/rectangular box and the "Pass" to show.
When completed it should reboot into Froyo EC05, with a fresh system.

If you already put CWM3 on, boot into Clockwork with 3 finger salute and go to backup and restore, restore, and pick the before ext4 conversion file and it will bring you back so you can root with CWM 2.5.x.

OK, do you have a card reader? If so, pull the battery out of the phone, download the EC05 flashable ROM with root from the thread below. Copy it to your sd card. Put the card back in. Boot by holding camera, volume down, and power. Should be orange lettered screen. Scroll down to install zip from sd card, choose that, then choose zip from sd card, then choose the file you just put on and install it.
This should put a prerooted EC05 system on your phone.

Don't use ROM manager. It does not work properly on the Epic. Got this from developers here. You should be able to restore your backup if it was made when your system was known good.

I wouldn't...lots of problems with different versions of clockwork. But if that is where you made the backup....
You could try using the 3 finger salute to get to clockwork and see if your backup is there then restore it.
right now trying to restore back what i previously had. before my gf gets back from work and before she start yelling at me for deleting all of her apps she download... and i didnt backup any of them lol.

[Q] Flashing the SyndicateROM seems to freeze for me

For the last two nights, I've tried to flash with this ROM (first ROM flash, the phone was purchased Saturday) and everything seems to going just like the YouTube video provided by qbking77, until the restart. On restart, the phone will stay on the screen that says, "Samsung" that you get when you restart the phone normally. the night before last, I lost patience after about 30 minutes and Odined everything back to stock. Last night, I let the phone try to restart all night and this morning, it was still stuck on the same screen.
Two questions about this. One, is this a normal length of time for the first time flashing a ROM? If not, what is? Two, What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for your advice (for course, I will give a "thanks" to answers).

I was running EC05. I coppied the ZIP file to my SD card, set the handset to UBS Diagnostics, ran the "run.bat", in CW3.whatever from my PC, cleared all three caches, three times, and loaded the ZIP file from the SD chip. I thought that CW3 converted to ext4.

If you're capable of using Odin, then just use the Odin CWM link in my signature. From there, you can flash a pre-rooted EB13 Deodexed Stock with CWM 3. You can update it to EC05, before you flash, after, or never, and you'll be fine.
I also have Syndicate Rom Frozen linked in my signature.
That should work for you.
I'll give that a shot when I get home and let you know how that works.
One of the things I did, was just reflash the ROM right overtop itself.
I have flashed this ROM many times, and every now and then the first flash wont take for whatever reason, I just pull the battery, go back into CWM, and reflash the ROM again right overtop itself, and it normally works.
note: boot times longer than 5-10 and you got an issue
Also, make sure you are using Clockwork Mod version 3.0.0.6 and not version 2.5.5, as 2.5.5 does not support EXT4, and I think that the ROM is EXT4
Odin a prerooted ec05 ext4 tar, I have 2 diff packages here on xda.. then flash srf over that.. good to go. I wouldn't even mess with the eb13 tar, because then you have to odin the modem again seperately...

That might be my issue, since the version that I was Odining was EB13 and then the carrier updated to EC05. That actually makes sense (although, I don't really know what the "under-the-hood" differences between the two are).

You would think, but I actually got a better official update to EC05 during my tests. Regardless, I actually have found EB13 to have better signal.
Either way, pre-rooted should make it easy for you.
Random,
Once I figured out exactly the steps to take, everything worked! WOOT! A thousand thanks to everybody who input in this!
For anybody out there having the same problem, follow these steps:
0) Download and install the drivers for your Samsung Epic 4G (Found here).
1) Download the ROM
2) Either copy the whole ZIP file onto your microSD Chip by using your USB cable or by unmounting it and using the SD slot adapter and plugging into the appropriate slot on your computer. (Just place it in the root directory)
3) Click on RandomKing's link above in his signature that says "CWM Odin" (this is a pre-rooted Sprint stock ROM)
4) Uncompress the file onto your Desktop (it's an RAR file, so you're going to need either WinRAR or 7ZIP).
5) Turn your phone off and unplug your USB Cable.
6) While holding the "1" key, power up the handset (you'll get a funny looking icon of the Android shoveling)
7) Plug in your phone in to a soldered USB port (as in ON THE BACK of the machine).
8) Double click the Odin3+v1.61 file.
9) Add the .pit file to the "pit" box.
10) Add the other file to the "PDA" box.
11) Click "Start" button.
12) Wait for it to finish and reboot.
13) Reboot again, this time your going to use the "3-button-power-on" (While holding the down volume button and the camera button, power on the phone)
14) Clear your caches (three times each: data/factory reset, cache partition and Dlavik cache [that's under advanced], by scrolling to them in the menu and pressing the camera button)
15) Select "Install zip from SD Card"
16) Choose your ROM and press the camera button
17) This should take something less than 15 minutes total, including restart
18) Enjoy your New Phone!
What version of the ROM are you trying to flash? I was having the same issue when I tried to flash the "journaling" version of the rom that is posted over on ppc geek. No matter what I did It would hang at the Samsung logo.

I was using EC05, but I used the Odin in the post above mine to get a pre-flashed EB13 build of Froyo. Then I just did exactly what I wrote. I hope this helps and I'm sorry about taking so long to get back to you.
