Hi everyone,
I was wondering, is there such thing as a stock gingerbread rom for the g2, or as close to stock as it can be? I know CM7 is almost out and its based on 2.3 but I was hoping for something as stripped down as a nexus S if such thing exists?
Deodeoxed version of stock froyo. Themed over some gingerbread. That is as stock as you can get.

I'd disagree completely. CM7 with a stock launcher flashed over it is as close you can get to stock 2.3 simply right now. Skinned 2.2 is pretty far away from stock 2.3...
Just flash the latest CM7 nightly (at #5 almost #6 now). Or if you're worried just go with RC1, although all the nightlies after RC1 came out have been just fine for me so far. If you wanna get rid of ADW Launcher for the "stock" feeling, flash the stock Gingerbread launcher after you install CM7. Been doing this for about 10 nightlies now and it works like a charm and looks amazing as well. This is a really fast ROM, and it looks just like stock 2.3 on the NS does, but with all the CM7 goodies baked in if you want them.
I used the "CM7StockLauncherOnly.zip" from THIS thread. Its from the Nexus S community forum but it works just fine on G2. All this does is uninstall ADW and install the stock 2.3 launcher. I've gone ahead and attached the .zip that I've been using to this post for convenience . Just flash through recovery after doing a boot up with CM7.
Also, if you're going to be updating your nightlies of CM7. I can give you some advice. While in recovery, after flashing a newer version of CM7 (aka nightly #5 to #6, etc.), just go to advanced > Reboot Recovery, THEN flash the CM7LauncherMod.zip. Don't flash the new CM7, boot, then go back and flash the launcher mod. This way you will save all of your homescreen locations, widgets etc. If you let your phone boot with ADW installed it will wipe it clean when you install the stock 2.3 launcher and you'll have to start over. If you do this I can explain more in detail but thought I'd give you the headsup now.

I can't stress how much more I love CM7 with the stock launcher lol. I was kinda luke-warm on CM7 at first because its just got a little lag with ADW, but now its buttery smooth. Let me know if you need any help I'd be glad to run you through it.
thanks a lot for the insight, i'll prbbly work my way to cm7 once it becomes final

Awesome. Hope you make the move its a great ROM.
FWIW, CM7 has been extremely stable for me. Never had a crash, reboot, force close, or anything since build #30 when I started. I think a lot of people are in the same boat. I really don't think theres many instable issues this has been a daily driver for a lot of people for many weeks now, even before the RC1 came out.
If you find instability you can always go back to the nandroid backup of your stock 2.2, but I don't think it would hurt to try it out and see how you like it! Just remember to update to the latest CWM Recovery 3.0.0.5 from ROM manager, it handles both 2.2 and 2.3 backups/restores.

Nope you can flash it any time you want. Just go into recovery (hold down power button, select "reboot" then select "recovery", and wipe cache to be safe. Then go to "install zip from SD card" > "Choose zip" then select it and hit YES, just like you would for any other zip.
Remember, this will completely uninstall ADW. You will probably lose all of your icon/widget locations, although the 1st initial time I flashed the stock launcher I didn't lose my locations completely (everything shifted over by 1 homescreen weirdly). I'd most definitely run a nandroid backup before you flash anything (this should be normal practice anyways).
The reason why I instructed to flash the ROM, then restart recovery then flash the Stock Launcher Mod without a boot up is that when you're using the stock launcher over and over, installing ADW will wipe your homescreen locales.
Thanks very much. Just installed with no issues/lost widgets or icons. This is WAY better.

Glad it worked for you. Like I said I've been using this for about 10 nightlies now and its the best 2.3 experience I've ever had.
Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions or troubles.
Quick question for the people in the know, I'm running RC1 with the stock launcher & loving it, but I would like to upgrade to the latest nightly.
So if I flash the latest nightly (With no wiping) then before booting into the OS I flash this zip it will be just upgrading the OS & won't touch any of my screen setups?

Yes. If you follow my instructions from the first page properly. Otherwise you'll either not flash the launcher properly, or you'll flash it and lose your home screen setups.
Before starting. Do a Nandroid backup. Always a good idea! That being said, follow these instructions:
1) Go into recovery (Power Button > Reboot > Recovery), wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache (doesn't hurt, takes 10sec)
2) Flash the new nightly build you're upgrading to (Install Zip from SD card > Select Zip > select the latest nightly you're upgrading to.
2a) DO NOT REBOOT SYSTEM
3) Still in recovery, go to Advanced > Reboot Recovery
4) After recovery reboots, go ahead and flash zip from SD card > Select Zip > Flash the stock launcher mod.
Let me know if you have any questions. The crucial part is rebooting recovery after flashing the nightly and before flashing the launcher mod, this way ADW is installed and you can properly uninstall it and replace it with the stock launcher. Also, make sure you don't accidentally boot up the ROM before flashing the stock launcher, as it will wipe your homes because it installed ADW.
Just realised i never said thanks for this! *Slaps head*
So Thanks (Y)

I have been wanting to root and try a custom rom but I was scared of brick. Anyway I finally rooted with Unrevoked 3.3 which installed Clockwork recovery also and after that I installed rom manager. When I went to do a backup of current rom it said I need to install Clockwork recovery first but its there already. I know there is guides everywhere but thats the problem not sure which to use to learn what to do before I try flashing new rom. What about kernel I really don't understand where to go from here. I am rooted and Clockwork recovery flashed but don't know where to go from here. I am not a idiot just a little guidance please! I really want learn process of installing new and restoring old roms with my Evo. How do I know what other updates need to done before using a certain rom like kernel and radio? Thanks Alot To Anyone That Can Help A Fellow Android Lover!

First of all, if you're certain that your recovery is installed, then you need to decide what rom and what type of rom you want to install? For instance, do you want a Sense based rom (the HTC overlay that your EVO came with) or an AOSP rom (Pure Android like on the Nexus)? For a sense based rom, I suggest Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS-5. You can see photos of it as well as download it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471 and for an AOSP rom, I suggest Salvage-Mod 1.2.1. It can be downloaded from here: http://www.salvage-mod.com/node/4. Make sure you download the Google Applications from the same page. Whichever you decide to flash or any others, put them on your SD card. Now shutdown your device. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. There will be a short pause and then a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, you will see a set of options. One of the options will be "recovery". By the way, look at the top of the screen and make sure it displays "S-OFF". If it displays "S-ON", you are not rooted. Anyway, select recovery. Your phone will vibrate and display a white EVO screen and then boot into recovery. Your recovery should be ClockworkMod. Go into the backup menu and select nandroid backup to make a backup of your current setup. You can always restore your device to the way it was if you don't like your new roms, mods, themes and kernels. After you've made your backup, go to the wipe menu and wipe everything except the SD card. After that, go to the flash zip menu and flash the rom you want to try. After it's finished, it should prompt you to reboot. Do so and be patient. You will appear to hang at a couple of places. Be patient. Let it finish. Be patient. Do not pull the battery. Be patient. After some time, you will see your rom's splash screen and then your new homescreen. If it is a sense based rom, go to menu-settings-system updates and select update profile after you've signed in with your Google credentials. Enjoy your new rom.

Root of card is preferred but anywhere is fine since you will have to point rom manager to it. Alot of roms come with kernels so I wouldn't sweat it. No need to rename. I, too, use amon RA and love it. As for not giving good instructions, don't worry about it. There have been numerous times when I've given summarized instructions because I either assumed the OP knew what I was talking about or I was rushing because I had something else to do. Just d/l the latest version, put it on your sd card, reboot to recovery and flash it, then when you reboot to system, you'll get the prompt to go to the market and d/l each app.

Select reboot and then select recovery. Once you're back into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik cache and then flash the Google applications (gapps). Afterwards, reboot.

-steps into the fray-
Well I first off wana say, you were in good hands with dougjamal.
To flash gapps:
1. Download the latest gapps / the ones provided in the salvage mod thread
2. Boot into recovery.
3. After you have flashed the salvage mod rom, wipe your cache and dalvik cache, then flash the gapps zip.
Hello,
I think the subject says it all. I currently have android 2.2 (can't even remember what ROM I flashed) after rooting using Autoroot 2.4. Now I'd like to update my ROM to cyanogen 7. How do I go about doing this?
It appears that if I go to power down and choose reset -> recovery that Android System Recovery loads w/ Build "RA-supersonic-v2.3 - HAUS MOD rev.A" -- I presume that this is the key to flashing cyanogen 7?
What I think I do is:
Put cyanogen 7 image (zip file) in root folder of SD card
Boot into recovery mode
Make backup (NANdroid)
Select Wipe, then Wipe data/factory reset
Select Flash zip from sdcard.
Select the CyanogenMod update.zip.
Reboot
and I'm done???
But I would appreciate some more or less brick proof direction.
Thanks!
Personally, I would suggest Deck's or SalvageMod instead of CM7. Both are optimized and fly!
Well you would need whichever CM7 you want to flash (stable, nightly, etc). Also, you will need GAPPS. Probably want a custom kernel too, I suggest Tiamat 4.1.0 SBC.
Download and put on SD card. Boot into recovery.
Wipe cache and dalvik. Then nandroid, select everything you want. I typically keep on backup on my card.
Wipe everything except for SD card twice. Navigate to Flash Zips. Flash the ROM, then GAPPS, then mount data in "Mounts" then flash Tiamat kernel. Reboot. Let it sit, then reboot. Then do the setup

Thanks for the help. I installed cyanogenmod 7 and it seems to be working. I'm now restoring my backups. I don't really like the default skin and much preferred my old rom. I wonder if just changing the theme will help (I think I like the more factory setup... is that called sense?)
What is the advantage of installing tiamat kernel?
Thanks for the help!
The default skin is just a default. Take a look at my setup, picture in my signature). It doesn't look anything like the default setup for Cyanogen.

Are you talking about the theme or launcher? You can always install another launcher from the Market. I have grown fond of Launcher 7. Themes, there are many options. Check Evo Themes and Apps section. You can also download themes to use in Theme Manager from the Market too.
OR, have you heard of UOT Kitchen? Google it, watch a tutorial. You can make your own flashable theme!

Flashing the theme just loads it into your phone. Once you've flashed it you need to go into your app drawer and select the app called "Theme Chooser." When that opens you can scroll through the various themes loaded onto your phone. Select the one you just flash and hit "Apply." Bam! You're all themed up!
Here's a simple guide for CM7 users, to install CM9 as a test rom AND keep their CM7 ROM as a main ROM
EDIT (01/04/2012):Guide updated according to new versions of multiboot. Also works for CM10!
DUE TO KERNEL INCOMPATIBILITIES, MY GUIDE IS FOR PEOPLE WHO INSTALL CM9 +CM7 WITH THE SAME KERNEL. (EX: CM7 FROYO KERN + QUARX CM9 FOR FROYO KERN)
This guide is tested and approved on froyo kernels.
First: I suggest you backup your rom before doing anything, but there's no danger don't worry
first download and simply place on your SD-Card these files:
m11kkaa's multiboot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1364659
This will allow us to lauch our main ROM normaly, and when we want to, launch our 2nd rom (which will be CM9 =D)
Epsylon3's or Quark's latest version of CM9:
http://defy.wdscript.fr/
Or
http://quarx2k.ru/
Google Apps (optional):
http://goo-inside.me/gapps
Place all 2/3 zips on SD-card.
Download 3filesystem images that will be your virtual partitions for CM9 on Sdcard:
www.mediafire.com/?vvkmy2tx4yeg32m
extract them, and place all 3 of them under /multiboot/CM9 in SDcard
You can also use the app called multibootmanager to do this
Warning: these partitions have size limits (300mb each). Don't run out of space!
People who know how to can create their own partitions, any size they want, threads exist for that
Here are the instructions:
DO NEVER WIPE DATA DURING PROCESS, IT IS NOT NEEDED
1) Go into Bootmenu
2) Choose "recovery ->" to go to the recovery choice menu
3) MAKE SURE you have:
"Custom Recovery" OR "Latest Recovery"
"Stable Recovery"
"Stock Recovery"
4) Choose "Stable Recovery"
6) Install Zip from SD-Card: multiboot_vXXXX.zip
7) REBOOT SYSTEM NOW
8) When you get the blue led, press Vol. Down, you will be in the Bootmenu.
-Choose boot->Set Default->2nd-init
-Go back once
-choose [2nd-system] to boot into the 2nd system menu.
- Here is where you will be able to select 2nd roms to boot. If you put the files on the SDcard in the right place (see above), you should see them in the menu. Other choices are "boot from nand","recovery" or "reboot".
- Choose Recovery(CWM), and then select which rom you want to apply the modifications (CM9). You will now reboot into a recovery for your virtual system.
9) a) Install zip from sdcard: CM9!!! =D
9)b) (OPTIONNAL): install google apps
10) Wipe cache and dalvik cache and then reboot system.
11) Done! reboot. If you want to launch CM9 just press Vol. Down on blue led, boot into 2nd system like above and select CM8 to boot it.
Booting any virtual ROM will take a few minutes, sd cards are slower, and this will be first boot.
Enjoy Epsilon's, Quark's, m11kkaa's and walter79's great work!

- you can restore any backup or install any zip in "Lastest Recovery" and it will go into your virtual system
- boot the virtual system with the 2ndsystem-option in bootmenu

If one day you don't want CM9 again, simply remove the folder /fsimages/ from your SDcard.
I suggest you keep them in case, you may change your mind one day
You now have double boot, and CM7, and CM9 on your same phone!!!!
Troubleshooting:
My main ROM works, but i get a bootloop with CM9
In latest recovery: wipe cache + Dalvik cache. If you still get a bootloop then wipe data too.
Are u shore u flash multiboot from custo/latest recov?
I always do it from stable recov!

It IS from custom and NOT latest recovery (step 4). Your "guide" is incorrect and if you ask me, makes things even more complicated than they are...sorry.
In what way is this needed amyway?; there's already a multi-boot thread.
No warning about NOT wiping data in latest recovery...Nothing about the size and limits of the 3 image files...

"Custom recovery" as we know today used to be called "latest recovery" a few months ago. The name changed so i mentionned both names in case people get confused if i say only one and they see the other. What is important is checking if you have three recoveries, not the way you call them.
Seen as CM9 is for test purposes, i doubt that warning not to install to much apps on the Second ROM is very relevant. Even though i will take into account your comment

If you flash multiboot.zip in the stable mod, you'll change mount settings for your 2nd init partition, and then it will be your main rom that will load from sdcard. I tried this and unfortunately my main com became CM9, and it is not what we want ^^.

In fact, my bad: I meant "stable" not custom. m11kkaa multiboot is to be installed in stable recovery and never in latest.
Never wipe data in latest recovery or android secure will be erased and your main boot apps will stop working.
There are incompatibilities between some roms: MSGinger will not work with ics..
...OP need some work to say the least...

Just give it a shot anyway... but if there was ever a reason to make a nandroid backup of your current build before jumping into something, I think multiboot calls for it...
L.E.: and while I think about it: one drawback I've noticed from multiboot is that once you boot back into your main rom, the battery stats are screwed up (or to the state they were when you left for the 2nd-boot). So give your phone a nice long charge to fix this or don't complain about eventual steep battery drop...[/QUOTE]

That is incorrect...that's how I did (and others and how m11kkaa's instructions were at first _ I believe) and CM7 IS my main boot and ics my 2nd boot. And multiboot zip most probably can be install with both when you think about it. It's ICS that you absolutely need to install in latest/custom recovery... that was my last comment here good luck with this thread.

I wouldn't bother with uninstalling the multiboot function. But if you don't want to use your 2nd rom anymore simply take the /fsimages/ folder of your sdcard.
If one day you change your mind, copy them back . Multiboot may go away if you change anything to do with bootmenu in your main ROM (CM7).
Remember: if you don't want the 2nd Boot anymore, simply take the partitions under /fsimages/ off your card
P.S. You should have a chat with epsylon and m11kkaa about the issues you mentionned

Your welcome =)
I tested CM9 and deleted /fsimages.
I reflashed many times using SBF, fixed SBF, omg, at least ten times.
And my CM7 (a new instance) does not save the language I choose after a reboot.
And any keyboard except the built-in one also hangs (The application has stopped etc).
Help, I need to fix it back =( I just cannot understand why I reflashed all the things thoroughly and still I can't get just the normal CM7 back =(

How did it go?
I tried to install it, but no luck. After reboot I am stuck on Cyanogoogle logo forever... Wonder what could be wrong?
I am sorry if I sound like a noob, but I am. Thank you in advance for all your help
So i was able to root my ATT G3 using Skunk Apes easy root guide. I was then able to download Busy Box, ROM Manager, Titanium Backup, and Superuser based on a thread by the Hulk. I have backed up all my apps and I am not sure where to go at this point. I want to be able to clean out the bloatware and open up the tethering to make my phone a free mobile hot spot, so I can use my Asus TF300 outside the house.

If you have installed Titanium Backup, there is options in there to freeze or remove Bloatware. In Titanium Backup, select the "Backup" Tab. Find which bloatware you wish to remove and select it. You will then have options to "Freeze" or "Uninstall".
You can use this app for tethering over WiFi: WiFi Tether for Root Users from the Google Playstore
Alternatively you can also flash a custom ROM. =)
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

It's possible the Wifi app I told you about is incompatible with your device. There is a native work around that might be good for you, but you would have to have a custom recovery. The directions are below if, and only if, you have a custom recovery such as Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) or Clockwork Mod (CWM).
Also, you can download the following app for "freezing" your bloatware. Freezing is essentially a reversible way to remove bloatware from your phone. This allows you to undo something if you freeze something you need later. App Quarantine ROOT/FREEZE
Now for the tethering: You can download this: Click on the link under the OP's post labeled "Download Below"
Once you have the zip file, place it in the root of your Internal Storage on your phone via USB MTP. Boot your phone into Recovery Mode and select "Install from ZIP" choose the zip file you just placed in your internal storage. (Should be: /sdcard/name_of_file.zip). Once you have finished that reboot your phone and use the "App Quarantine ROOT/FREEZE" app I previously mentioned to freeze the "Tethering Provision" app. Once you have done that you should have native tethering capabilities through your settings menu as if you had paid for it.
=== If you do not have a custom recovery ===
You only have two options....
1.) Install a custom recovery. I recommend TWRP, but that is just my preference.
2.) Go to the Google Play Store and search for "Root Tether" and sort through each of the apps that come up and try to find one that may work for your device. (I would read the reviews.)
=== ALSO ===
You can also just download a custom ROM like CM10.0.0 and it automatically removes the bloatware and gives you a more pure-like android experience. CM10.0.0 also enables native tethering automatically.
If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. =)
EDIT >> I found the following site that may help you in determining which apps are safe to freeze. http://www.s3forums.com/forum/galaxy-s3-apps/434-bloatware-applications-safe-remove-root-required.html

Well ROMs come in many different flavors. It depends on what you like. If you like a pure android experience (with some extras and mods) similar to the Google Nexus devices, I would recommend CM10.0.0-Stable (for a daily use ROM).
CM (CyanogenMod) has more up to date versions, but are very buggy and not recommended for daily use until the bugs get ironed out. The CM10.0.0 is a 4.1.2 based ROM and the more updated version CM10.1 is a 4.2.1 based ROM which is the buggy ROM I mentioned.
If CM doesn't sound like your thing you can view these forums to see other ROMs:
| Android Development
| Original Android Development
If you DO like the sound of CM, you can follow my below steps:
==== WARNING ====
I am not responsible for anything that could happen to your device in the event that your device is bricked or no longer usable. I also advise that you read all stickies on the forum before moving forward with the below steps. These steps are specifically detailed for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 i747 (d2att) phone. If you do not have this phone, disregard the following information:
==== END OF WARNING ====
To install TWRP (which is what I prefer) follow these steps:
1.) Download Goo Manager
2.) Open Goo Manager and grant super user rights.
3.) Press your "Menu" button and select "Install OpenRecoveryScript"
4.) Possibly grant super user rights again and repeat step 3.
5.) Confirm you are sure you wish to install TWRP
6.) Confirm yet again you are sure you wish to install --AND-- make sure the file is: openrecovery-twrp-2.3.3.1-d2att.img
7.) Sit back and wait. Goo Manager will take you to the Goo website and download the .img. It will then reboot your phone and install the image. You can follow the status of the download in your drop down task bar where it is downloading.
Once the image is installed you can confirm by booting into recovery mode by shutting down your phone, then with the phone off press and hold Volume Up, then Home Button and then Power button simultaneously. Once the phone vibrates you can release those keys and you should be presented with a blue screen with the "Team Win" logo.
You can then click "Reboot" then "System" from within the recovery. Your phone will boot up into the system. Download these files if you wish for CyanogenMod CM10.0.0 Stable:
CM10.0.0 ROM: http://get.cm/?device=d2att&type=stable
Google Apps: http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
Once you have downloaded both of those files, move them to the root of your Internal Storage on your phone.
Reboot into recovery as explained above and follow these directions:
1.) Select "Wipe" then select "Cache" and Swipe to Wipe.
2.) Then repeat with the option "Dalvik Cache" and "Factory Reset".
3.) Once you have fully wiped the device select "Install" and then select "cm-10.0.0-d2att.zip"
4.) You will then get a confirmation, select "Add More Zips" and select "gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip"
5.) You will then get another confirmation. Then "Swipe to Confirm Flash" and it will go through the process.
6.) At the end it should say Successful and "Reboot" Select "Reboot" to boot into the new system.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask =)

That is correct. however since he is still stock he may not have made any backups. Once you flash TWRP you can make a backup, and I would recommend doing so.
TWRP 2.3.3.1 is compatible with the upcoming 4.2.1 JB folder structure and has a touch UI that blows CWM's touch UI out of the park. You can also flash up to 10 zips without having to go back and do it manually each time.. Its much more automated.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but you will never be comfortable doing things like flashing ROMs until you just take the time and read, watch videos, etc. I personally like Clockwork for recovery but to each their own, as previously mentioned. It'll take a while at first, but in no time you'll have it down.
Lots of tutorial videos and a great place to start: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728824&highlight=heimdall

You can also switch between ClockworkMod & TWRP to use an old nandroid in a pinch, so you may want to save them for a rainy day disaster or walk down 'memory' lane :clever:
Edit: Just be sure to label them, at least with what version of android & what ROM
