As the Incredible comes up on its birthday, I've started thinking about other phones to move to. The Thunderbolt is an obvious consideration, as well as the Incredible S. I'm assuming that both will be supported by ROM developers fairly - maybe not to the extent that the Inc is supported, but I think there will be a few choices.
I used another upgrade on my family plan to get the Incredible, so I have an upgrade waiting for whenever I find a phone that's compelling enough to upgrade to (or I break the Incredible...). The Thunderbolt is looking a little more appealing than the Incredible S now, especially because its only a little bit bigger and has 4g for the same data price as the Inc S (at least as i understand it... $30/mo for unlimited LTE, which I assume includes 3g as well?)
Just wondering what you guys had in mind in terms of upgrading. Thoughts?
I'm not planning on changing anytime soon, if they seriously work out a lot of the issues in the TB *maybe* but I doubt it.
The only reason I'd want to upgrade is for 4G, and it's going to be a year or 2 before it gets to my area. To be honest, 3G speeds are perfectly fine for me. Can stream youtube flawless as well as hulu. More speed the better, but no push for me to upgrade.
I think ill get the iPhone 6... JK, I'm on a 2yr contract with my Incredible started 4/29/2010 (got on launch day). So whatever is out in 2012 I guess. Hopefully my dinc will last another year. Surprised I haven't broken it yet.
But how do you go about upgrading to another phone out of contract? Like the thunderbolt, would I just pay the retail price in full (rumored @ $750) and keep the current contract?

Pretty much. I bought the Droid 2 when I came over to Verizon and after a few months bought an Incredible full price (the Droid 2 almost covered it via eBay). You just change your device on the website and it doesn't affect your contract.
Thunderbolt For Me!!!
It looks like a lot of devs are going towards the TB. That will probably be the biggest factor in my decision making.
I'll probably use this last annual upgrade to get the TB on a one year contract. With any luck, those getting the TB now will be grandfathered with the $29.99 unlimited LTE for future equipment upgrades.
I will likely upgrade on 1yr contract with TB also. I am not up for upgrade until August, but an account rep approved an early upgrade. The way things are shaping up, it really could be 3rd quarter before anything significantly better drops on VZW. At that point, I could sell the TB and buy the next great phone at retail.
Id just love to have gingerbread with sense, dont need a new phone as my dinc has been great since release date!

I have a DX and a DINC,
I honestly do not see much of a reason to upgrade just yet. with the exception of 4G and front facing cameras, these new phones are not exactly blowing the doors off of the previous models. I love my DINC, and I plan on waiting at least for a while until this winter/next spring..I'm hoping that by then the new phones will be a bit more of an upgrade.
Besides, I at least need to wait to see which devices will or will not have locked bootloaders.

Which phone do you prefer Incredible or X?
I just bought my Incredible a week ago, I love the dev support and how smooth the phone is, hate the battery life.
I really like the huge DX screen.... Not sure if it would be a good idea to trade.
Thanks

The screen was nice and the size wasn't bad...but it can't touch the inc.
Stock it was loaded with so much bloat that it lagged horribly. There were some great roms for it though.
Overall my experience is that I had to rom my X to make it as fast as a stock inc.

I'm waiting for an HTC Dual-Core phone. The TB isn't enough of an upgrade for me to leave the comfort of my beloved DINC. My dream would be for an HTC Tegra 2 phone but I know it will never happen due to HTC's relationship with Qualcomm. So something Pyramid-esq I'm guessing that'll be coming out this summer.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I will stick with the Incredible then.
my next phone is the thunderbolt. i'm really excited to wait in line at 8:30 am for it tomorrow.
i'm upgrading to 4g for the same reason i upgraded to 802.11n. the population density in the city is just too high. all the cells are just overloaded. verizon's not bad, but AT&T is just horrendous. i actually got AT&T to waive the ETF on my iPhone plan so i could move to VZW and get an OG Droid. anyway, back when i had an 802.11g router my signal strength was fine, but the speeds were just terrible. a 20 second kismac scan just now reveals 45 different wireless networks coursing through my apartment. after moving to wireless n the difference was huge and i'm hoping the same effect will be seen after moving to LTE. i'm also hoping that my signal strength will be better on the 700 mHz band. my office in the Financial District has a not-very-good signal and i hear 700 mHz penetrates further into the built environment.
finally, i'm really stoked to go to a 4.3" screen. i bought an HD2 and took it abroad so i could have a phone with a local sim while traveling. although mobile data speeds in india and bangladesh were pretty awful, i really enjoyed using android on that giant HD2 display. a higher resolution screen would be nice, but i'm ready to move on from my DInc so that's not a requirement for me.
see you in the thunderbolt forums.
I really want the galaxy s 2, hopefully it will come out on Verizon by June 18th

I'm reading a lot of complaints about the EVO. But how many of you are returning it before the month is up.
As for me I had the HTC Mogul then the HTC Touch Pro2. Still love my Touch Pro2 but i'm going to sell it.
The EVO is the first android i ever had, the best phone i ever had. I'm keeping mine.

I plan on keeping mine, after I get a good unit lol
I am keeping mine too. I love my rooted EVO specially using the tether app
I'm probably gonna replace mine.
Screen separation and a stuck pixel.
Return? Never unless the 30fps issues arent resolved.
I'm loving it. I'm unrooted and still love it. I don't plan on rooting until theirs a much easier, less involved rooting method. Also depends on when FroYo is expected to come out. I'm patient.
being rooted im sure every issue that is out is going to be resolved with the devs we have at xda minus the screen seperation which im not one of the unlucky ones.. im loving this phone, before having this phone the one thing i wasnt too fond of was the size of this badboy after actually playing with it now the size is one of my favorite things about it.. never thought id be one to have such a huge phone but when im messing with my wife hero im like "no way, too small for me" to think i used to think she had a big phone.. funny how things change, but im hanging on to this and am actually getting my wife one as well... luvinit
I love my EVO but I am a little salty that we got 440MB of internal memory and the droid X has 8 GBs. There's no way I am paying Verizon's prices.
I am keeping my EVO 4G being that the only competition is the DroidX and well...I get verizon's network without Verizon's prices on my EVO.

I still don't get how HTC thinks supplying such paltry amounts in a flagship product paired with 2.1 is a wonderful fit. They also supplied the EVO with a 16-bit screen so cost criteria is always at play..
I wonder how HTC-OEMs will step up their game now that the iPhone 4 is out but I think just bringing 2.2 will help a lot in the interim.
No way! This phone has been amazing so far, no issues whatsoever
I'm actually thinking about returning mine for the X. The big choice was between sprint and vzw and vzw only seems about $10 more per month for a much nicer phone.
"Their" not "There"
sorry had to fix that.
and no i'm not returning my evo, I would if sprint was coming out with a better phone but since the droidx isn't sprint no thanks.
I'm keeping my evo, because something new and faster always comes along, except with sprint, I can upgrade every year vs every 2 with verizon. Have fun with your droid x when I have my evo 2 in hand next year
I'm considering it. Both the Droid X and the Epic 4g are looking better in some areas that matter to me. The big thing that may keep me with the Evo is the user community that HTC has. I understand that the Motorola and Samsung dev group is growing but it is nowhere near as big as XDA. And since I like tweaking and improving stuff, that's important to me.
edit: Oh, and please edit the title. The "there" instead of "their" is driving me crazy. If this was an international phone, I would excuse it, but it's not. We're all Americans here and we all should know the difference between those two words.
I love the EVO!! I do have the screen seperation issue, but on a list for a new one at the shack that they say I should have this weekend. Other then that I couldnt see my self using anything else!!!

posting this again since no one has seen it evidently, but:
I called VZW and on any voice plan $59 or more/month, you get 12 month phone upgrades. So this is no longer a selling point in sprint's favor (there are others anyway, but this was the big one for me).
I'm almost 100% sure I'm taking my evo back this weekend.
I'm keeping mine. It's been working great!

As many if you have read, some pretty amazing new phones are coming out early next year including the dual core Snapdragon and Tegra 2 models. With dedicated GPU's, higher clock speeds and reduced die sizes (better battery life), these are sure to make our EVO's look like PS2's by comparison. The tech temptation will be extreme.
So, the question is, will you stick with your EVO:
1) Until it dies of old age.
2) Until your contract runs out and you can get a new discounted phone on contract.
3) Go for early upgrade (I think you can do it after a year if you are a Sprint Premier Customer).
4) Bite the bullet and pay full price just to have the latest and greatest.
Personally, I'll probably do the annual upgrade. I can never resist new tech, but I still can't see paying $600 for a new phone off contract ;-)

I probably will keep it for a good while, I mean I'll get another phone, but keep my Evo... it's just so reliable
Before the evo I always used phones with physical keyboards. It took me a while to get used to typing on the evo. However, now I don't know if I could go back to a physical keyboard since typing on this is so fast.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Well...I paid out of pocket for my Evo as well as my wife's(both bought second hand about 2 months after release), I did this since we had the extra cash and we realised that dual core models were around the corner(and most likely carrying a hefty price) so why not save our upgrades for that! Yes we both love our Evo's and will keep them for sure as back ups for a long time, BUT you better believe when the 2nd Gen dual core devices(early adopters always seem to get screwed) hit Sprint shelves we will upgrade!
I have to have the latest device from HTC with Sprint...so as soon as something new comes out better than the Evo I will have it. I will still have an Evo on my account as well though. (4 lines open)
I will wait until my contract runs out (or as soon as I can get a discounted price) and get a new one. Not because I don't love the EVO, I just need the latest and greatest as I'm sure a lot of people on this site do.
I'm married to my Evo, but I might keep a younger, faster sancha on the side...
has anyone really stayed dedicated to their phone when the new bright shiny faster model comes out? the evo is probably htc's best phone to date "been rocking htc since the 6700" and when they come out with something better, ill put this bad boy on metro and make my money back like the past 4 htc's ive owned
Love it but not married to it lolz
I usually "upgrade" phones whenever the Full discount from my Service Provider is up.
I will probably upgrade as soon as I can get the newer "better" phone on the cheap. I WILL NOT pay $600 for a phone
depends on if a phone comes out that just blows me away before my upgrade discount is available in june.
$200 was a great price point for the EVO. If they do the same for a dual core, I'll be using my Sprint Premiere after a year.
Depends on several things. I paid full price for the evo and im contract free now.
So chances are I would change. I like the evo but I also like new "toys"

I bought my Evo 2 weeks after launch. Had it during that up until the G2 was released. Sold the Evo and bought the G2. My main reason was the physical keyboard. I was tired of the hassle of touch typing so I gave in and went with this phone. While I sometimes miss the larger screen, I am extremely happy with my decision.

not stablely. it can make it to 1.57 stable with the right rom otherwise its 1.489 the evo can be clocked to 1.257 stable again with the right rom but the snapdragon in the g2 is a new updated version of our snapdragon that has been severlly underclocked.
New phones are usually first shown at the trade shows early in the year like CES. They usually don't become available until Spring like the Incredible which was April or May, and the EVO on June 4th. If that holds true next year, we probably won't have anything new available for about another 5-6 months. The biggest thing for me is screen size. I've used my buddies Incredible, and a couple friends have the Epic and I really don't want anything with a screen any smaller than the EVO. I am a premier customer so I get upgrades every year. I love new toys but it would have to be pretty great to pull me away from my EVO.
Indeed some awesome phones coming out and I'm definitely a sucker for new toys but I will wait until something really catches my interest in every aspect of the device. The Shift talk has got me thinking about physical keys again even though I was convinced I was over them. Basically just looking for a new true step up. The Evo will still get use in some manner though. I love this phone so I won't just jump at the next big thing unless it really is necessary. Then again, I have a problem with passing up cool stuff.
SWYPED from my SUPASONIC
I usually buy a new phone once a year when my upgrade date comes along. It's my "major purchase" of the year. I will sometimes wait an extra six months or so if I hear a new phone is coming out that I think I'll really like.
I just upgraded to the Evo last month. I gave my Hero to my girlfriend so she could get rid of her Palm Pre. We're both happier now. When the time comes I will upgrade and give her my Evo. She likes new phones, but she doesn't need to be as far along the curve as I feel the need to be.
I currently have a Samsung Fascinate and planning to selling it because of lack of some features in Froyo and probably future updates in general.
Is this the phone to get as in terms of software development progress? (In verizon of course). Or is Droid 2 or X good as well? (not liking the X because it's too big).
I don't play games whatsoever on this phone. TBh, most important feature is just getting things done very quickly; Music, E-Mail, Browsing, GPS, SMS/MMS.
Thank you.
Nah, this isn't the phone to get. Verizon has a Powerhouse lineup coming out very soon including the thunderbolt and an LG smartphone ( and the iPhone, being announced tomorrow ).
Sent from my HTC Incredible using XDA App
Of course I'm a little bias but yes, I think as of now this is the phone to have. The development community rocks, and it is a very quick phone. Now there are some awesome phones on the horizon; the HTC Thunderbolt, and the Moto Droid Bionic. But considering you can get a DInc at Best Buy for free (with a new contract or available upgrade of course) it is a sweet deal. As far as what's currently out I haven't checked the Droid 2 forums but I did check out the X just to see how it was coming, and it's nothing compared to what we have over here. Just my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth.

You said "(In verizon of course)." Are you thinking of running the stock ROM? Or plan to root and run some of the great ROMs the devs here put out?
Since you said 'Verizon', makes me think you're planning to run stock. If so, beware that even the Thunderbolt is shipping with Froyo. My guess is we won't see Gingerbread (officially) until spring or summer.

I meant Verizon as in, I am restricted to phones that Verizon carries. I don't really stay stock, if I do, I'd at least have a ULV Kernel.
If I sell this now, I'll need to use a dumb phone until whatever phone I need comes out. I wonder if I can order the iPhone tomorrow on the website... kind of tempting.

There is a thread I made that shows all the ROMs (that are up to date with development) to show how awesome our dev community is. The incredible is an awesome phone. I am moving to the iPhone because I've wanted one since I switched to VZW, but if you want to stay with android and you are in the sub-4" market... go with the incredible. It is the heat.
The thread I mentioned is at the top of the droid incredible development page, as a sticky.
Ok so iPhone announced preorders begin Feb 3rd releases Feb 10th, if you want to stay Android get the Thunderbolt, Motorola does a horrible job with android phones and the Droid and Droid X community's are dead, if you get an Incredible your getting us, the great community but you could be getting the 4g LTE with the thunderbolt. In conclusion YOUR BETTER OFF GETTING THE THUNDERBOLT!

What is the deal with upgrades at January 16th?
I have the discount pricing for additional family line (my little brother) available for use, that's why I was considering the 3 phones because they're not that pricey at Amazon.com or Newegg.com with contract.
Bloody hell, I would be stuck with a dumbphone until those new phones come out.. and I heard Verizon might do a more expensive plan for 4G phones?
lol iphone,, um negative.. hell im gonna leave verizon.. tired of paying out the arse.. lol gonna go to virgin mobile.. ( samsung intercept ) <----ya i know but for 27 bucks a month its worth it.. not to mention still have my DINC to play with over wifi...
I realized I didnt use alot of junk outside of facebook. last.f.m. and a few other apps. so the intercept will work just fine.. and still have 3g service..

I'm sure 4G would cost more.. it is 8x faster... but only 1/3 of their 3G is covered with 4G.. do us without have to pay.. if so, **** that. ill get a fascinate to be my play around phone then lol. 4g isn't that important to me, either is 2.3, nor 3.0.. i had 1.5 on my eris that was rock solid. ever since that freak hype for 2.1 it has ruined it for me. I will never let myself get that excited for an update again, esp considering how long that wait was for what felt like nothing. I think that is what the Thunderbolt is gunna be like, since 2/3 of the 3g population won't have 4g service it will basically be an incredible with a 4.3 screen, stand, sound, and second gen snapdragon or whatever.

Same here.
i went from the fascinate to the Dinc for the same reasons you did, and couldn't be happier. There just wasn't a solid DEV community for that phone.. coming to the DINC was night and day.. so many choices, so much support.. I run the MIUI ROM and love it..
I left the D2 for the Incredible and have zero regrets. If you want to have custom ROMs and kernels, you have to stick with HTC. X/2 ROMs are really hamstrung by the locked bootloader.
The development scene on the Incredible is great and probably as good as it will get on Verizon for the foreseeable future. The Thunderbolt will get custom ROMs and kernels just the same, but public sentiment seems to indicate it won't be as popular - meaning a slightly smaller development community (though perhaps Incredible and EVO ports will be relatively simple).
All that said, I'm probably going to jump on the Thunderbolt the day its released
I love the inc, but i would also wait.
I would actually wait until I see a phone that has the dev support/community like the Inc.
For me, where the dev support goes is where I go.
Yes we are a collective
So what phone should we move to after the Incredible?
I really don't like the Thunderbolt very much and the Motorola phones are obviously out of the question due to locking.
Should we just get the Thunderbolt next and accept its flaws or wait for another HTC dual core to come out? Samsung Galaxy is rumored to come over but we all know Samsung isn't very well supported. I guess I want to take advantage of locking into unlimited 4g.

Ill let you know in november when I'm eligible lol. Realistically by the time a lot of the ppl can get new phones, these phones are going to be so much more advanced. Even in a year. Google is making a big push towards NFC but not many phones have theme yet. Dual core chipsets are becoming common w/ quad core mobile chips expected by next year. Its really to hard to even say what I would want now.

My contract isn't up until December of next year, so I won;t be moving on from my Dinc for a while. There really isn't anything worth moving on to right now anyway, so for now I'm going to wait and hope that Verizon gets a pure Google phone before my contract is up.
Holy crap I haven't been in the DInc forums in a LONG time!
But really, it's your own choice. The developers choice? Thunderbolt.
I moved to the TB, Slayher has moved to the TB and many other DInc developers have moved to the TB. Overall, it's a rock solid phone that can have its flaws and issues sorted out by us. It's honestly nothing to avoid. Lemme know if you have any questions about the TB and I'll be glad to help
On the day I'm eligible to renew I'll gonna wait for the newest release, so whatever that is
i am really considering switching carriers and getting either the htc sensation or htc evo 3d but who knows lets see what verizon has in store for us because they really need to step up to the plate or they are going to be left behind.

Hopefully when I can upgrade Verizon should have 4g/lte in my market
Not eligible for upgrade until next summer but my next phone is definitely whatever is on Verizon with the best dev support. Kinda jealous of those with the TB but there's no 4g in my area and probably wont be even next summer but I'm assuming most offerings will be 4g by then.

No upgrade for a long time for me, too. But I am very happy with htc's sense, and hardware. So, I expect my next phone to be whatever htc android with the smallest screen is available at the time I upgrade.
I'm not eligible for another 1.5 years I believe. Even if I was now, there's nothing eye catching or worth upgrading to IMO.
MAYBE the Charge, but even that is a stretch. The TB or the Inc 2 aren't very appealing to me. I need my phone to last a little bit longer than the TB and the Inc 2 is a modest spec bump over the Inc at best.

I agree with this. Not sure what issues people have with the phone, but my brother got one and I am slightly jealous. No front-facing camera? I can live with that. I'd never get anything other than HTC for a phone, after the Incredible. (Yes, I currently have a Dell Streak7 - couldn't keep waiting for an HTC tablet).

Im holdin out for the 12ghz 8core processor that is 1080p runnin nvidia 580gtxgrafix, 120gig onboard storage, xm radio, 8 gig ddr4, 3d cam at 16 mp, front facing hd cam, android 4.0 and sense 5.0. And 3 day battery life. I dont think thats too much to ask for.

I seen a phone just like what you described yesterday at "Dreamers R Us".
I have 6 phones on my account so usually one of them is up for renewal about every 3-4 months. Right now 3 of them are up for renewal and I'm just waiting for something to become available with the "wow factor" that the Incredible had when it launched. I still have my original Incredible from 2 weeks before launch last year and I'm really going to have a hard time getting rid of it. Either that or I'll get one of the unlocked developer phones and can root/flash custom rom's without worry from the carrier.
Why move from it if you are happy with it?
I just got my new incredible yesterday. Picked up a brand new AMOLED model off ebay, got a month to month verizon account, just rooted the thing last night, and I plan to rock this baby for a long time.
Good to hear some guys really like the Thunderbolt. The only thing that urks me is that we don't have yearly/annual upgrades anymore so we will have this phone for almost 2 years.. As long as not having dual core for a couple years isn't a big deal.. Thats really the only thing making the decision a little harder.
Before it wasn't a big deal to get a new phone because I could upgrade every year.

Mostly to lock into unlimited LTE for at least 2 years. I wasn't that interested in upgrading until I found out they weren't tiering LTE plans for at least a couple months.
Guys, have we forgotten about the Droid Bionic!?
Moto promised unlocked bootloaders in all their future phones, post-Droid X, Dual core tegra 2, 4-inch screen goodness! It's basically a phone with XDA written all over it!
Plus my contract doesn't end till next year, since we knocked down a line on our family plan, but I really don't mind the 2 years+ that I'll have with my CM'ed Incredible!
I hope this phone will still be available in Sept. That is when i can upgrade. I don't see anything else I'm interested in. I don't want a 4.3 inch phone. Way to damn big.
I completely agree about the size. That really turned me off in the other current models. But in september there may be others that fit this sweet spot. If not I'd bet this will still be on sale. I got my Eris 4.5 months after it launched.
There was a rumor of a mini Mecha (thunderbolt) with 3.5" screen. That may be available. I'm sure they will still have Dinc2s in September

There's not going to be a whole lot of new stuff for a while. You might see some shrinkage (like the mini Mecha mentioned) of the lightweight hardware, and maybe some of the really delayed stuff will launch (mostly dual core stuff), but the next round of latest and greatest will be close to CES (Consumer Electronics Show) time.
You would be insane to upgrade to this phone in September. There will be a lot better stuff out by then and this one will be a half a year old.

I just had to use my annual upgrade yesterday on the 6th before verizon changed their data plans. I dont know but something about only 2gb for 30 bucks is a rip off to me (even tho I rarely use that much). I was only a month away from my full discount price but thought unlimited data was worth more than an extra discount. I already got a great deal on the phone I think, 99bucks on vzws site with free shipping for the I2.
Anyway, I just hope I'm going to like the bigger screen coming from the eris. My wife has the first gen incredible and I loved the screen size and this was the best one I could find since I refuse to go with an iphone after coming to love android.

Since the I2 just came out, why wouldnt it be available in sept?
