Unrooting, then rooting - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I first got my epic I installed a 1 click root on it. I have no idea which one it is as its been a while. I have been wanting to upgrade my phone to nebula's 1.0.7 rom so I can run 2.2 on it. I would first like to put my phone back to 100% out of the box factory everything before I go and do this. I have been reading the android development section for the epic but all the links I click on to download the software I need are all down. Pages are all comming up unavailable. Is there anyway I can get some help with getting the files I need and also a quick step by step on how to do this? Thank you in advance, il post my current software installed below
Kernal version: 2.6.29
Build Number: SPH-D700 Eclair.DI18

I'm on mobile so I can't provixe you with a link right now, but I believe it is best to use Odin to flash back to stock.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Well after tons and tons of searching I was finally able to get odin and the stock DI18 downloaded. Now I ran into another problem, Im trying to do the 1 click root with clockwork and I cant download it. Keeps comming up as a virus and wont let me download it. Trying to get syndicates rom installed.

=) Have to write 8 posts before i can post a URL... I'm on 5 with this one.

I recently rooted my girlfriends EPIC and it is running smooth...

She is running MIDNIGHT ROM and it's very fast. Had to install SETCPU to conserve battery.

Its coming up as malware and such cause its an exploit.

Ok check it out... I used this method http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XrE7D_Raw4 I followed STEP BY STEP and it worked. Make sure you have the ROM you want in your SD card and flash BEFORE you reboot after you set up CWM for the first time. Make sense? Lol... If you want 100% out of the box factory, download ODIN 1.61, open ODIN, put your phone on DOWNLOAD MODE (HOLD 1 and POWER button at the same time til you see yellow droid dude with a shovel). Connect your phone via USB cable. On ODIN window, put SPH-D700-DG27-8Gb-REL.tar on PDA section and s1_odin_20100512.pit on PIT section. After you do that, UNCHECK F.Reset Time and click START (Leave Auto Reboot checked). Let it do its thang. Your phone should reboot and BAM!! Hello 100% out of the box factory. I used this method at least 4 times while trying to figure out what ROM was best for my girlfriend. Haha. Hope this helps!

I've been looking everywhere for ODIN and it always leads to the SDX link that's down. Any links?

So will a computer with no protection allow me to download it? I ignored the warning anyway and downloaded it to my desktop but it didn't show up, no file was there. I'm sure that's just mse just blocking it out. Already have the rom downloaded and ready to go, just need to install a 1 click root with clockwork before I can install the rom.
Also figured out odin and have my phone back to out of the box stock so I'm ready to start trying some roms. Thanks for the help thus far.

When I did the syndicate rom and root it did the same thing to me and I just let it download anyways... Have you updated to eb13 yet?

sorry, I misread what you wanted to do

Ok so I finally figured it out and clockwork installed. Now im trying to install nebula's rom to see how I like it. I booted into system recovery but I dont know the keys. I figured out how to go up and down but what key is enter?

Yea i don't see why not. Hmmmm. Try saving it in your downloads. Don't know why the file isn't showing up...

The enter button is your HOME button at the bottom...

Or the MENU button but im almost sure its the home.

Ahhh thanks.

No prob SIR =)

Heres another question for ya. I got clockwork installed and I want to install syndicates rom now. I have the zip on my sd card but when I boot to system recovery it doesnt show up. Am I doing something wrong?

Did you go into your SD card through CWM?

You can either try to reflash the ROM, try a factory/data reset, or Odin back to EB13 prerooted with CWM3 and flash the ROM. Sounds like Odin is the best bet. For Odin instructions follow this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773032
For EB13 prerooted go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
Hope this helps.
I greatly appreciate the info but unfortunately neitherof those links helped, most likely my inability to follow the instruction, but when I would download the prerooted eb13 file it did not have any of the files mentioned in the directions...oh well get up early and try again. Thanks again for the help.

To use the EB13 file you need Odin which was in the first set of directions. Here is Odin in case the download link is broken.
This will wipe your phone and restore it to a factory condition but already rooted so on your computer unzip Odin into a directory (I called it Odin) then unzip the EB13 file and put the .tar and .pit files in the Odin directory. Open Odin. Uncheck the F.Reset box. Click PIT and put the EB13-EXT4.PIT in that box. Click PDA and put the EB13 tar file in there. Now power down your phone and Turn it back on holding the 1 key on the keyboard and then hitting the power button. A yellow triangle stating download mode will appear on the phone. Now connect your USB cable to the phone and computer. In a box on the Odin screen a COM number will pop up. Hit start, let it do its thing. If it passes it will reboot. If it gets stuck, pull the battery and try again, try other USB ports or a different cable if it gets stuck a few times. Check your service. If OK then continue to flash ROM.
Now with your ROM already on your sd card, shut down your phone and 3 finger (camera button, volume down, power all at once) into Clockwork Mod Recovery and let it do the EXT4 conversion...do not reboot. After that is done pick Install zip file from sd card, choose zip file, pick your ROM file and hit camera button. It will now flash your ROM.
All this is assuming you still want a custom ROM. If not I will point you to the stock unrooted files.
Thank you so much for the help, once i figured out i needed to download 7zip in order to release the file types it worked flawlessly and took only minutes so again thank you so much...yet after all that the problem was that sprint activated one of our very old phones sitting in a drawer at our house and removed my epic from service haha, so a long, unecessary road but glad to know the process works seamlessly thank you very much.

Epic root and rom questions....please help

Hi everyone, just got the epic last night coming from evo 3d....bought the phone used and it seems like it was already rooted as I have superuser on it....I spent the last 2 hours trying to figure this out with no results.....problem is I cant seem to flash anything because when I go into the ODIN menu it says downloading and never gets out of that screen. I have the Kies installed and usb drivers installed but for some reason my phone is not connecting to it....i see MTP driver is not installed and when I do try to install it says that the INF file is invalid. Also there is a yellow triangle when booting phone not sure if that helps to explain the issue....Im on 32 bit XP ....not sure what else I can inform you with to help me....Thanks in advance
When in downloading mode that is what It.is supposed to do. U need to plug it in and run Odin from the computer. Go into the development section and find one of The stock from images from sfhub. The last official release is ek02. Follow the directions in there.

Make sure you have the latest drivers from Samsung installed on your PC. Reboot the phone, reboot the PC, start as fresh as you can. Best way to go about it is to Odin EC05, One Click root with CM3 (purple version) and go from there.
Check the stickied thread with the old stickies in it, you'll find everything you need in there. And last but not least, for the love of everything holy, don't use the stock cord. Get something decent, blackberry cables seem to work the best for me. Make sure the port you're plugged into on your PC is on the back (so it's direct into the board) not one of the front ones.
Well first off, having the thread title as "???" does not help anyone with searching for answers.
I'm trying to understand your situation: So you say you were on Eclair and rooted, and then was able to upgrade to Froyo while rooted? That's not possible. The update would have failed after seeing a file system mismatch.
For Eclair and Froyo, the 1-click root method works. However, for Gingerbread you have to Odin a custom kernel and recovery, then install the Superuser app. Once you have CWM installed you can flash any EL30 rom you wish. The modem is upgraded manually. Look in the dev section for the sticky thread that has the thread link in it.

Video 2: http://youtu.be/jWOLEXqAeCc
To follow up on your Odin woes: use a different USB port that is directly on the motherboard; and a different cable.

Well i know that but the site wouldn't let me name it anything, I mean like 15 different titles that i wasan't allowed to use. Anyway I was able to fix the phone up, i was having a driver issue & that's what was stopping Odin from detecting the phone in downloader mode.

Download EB30 Clockwork tar file from here
http://goo-inside.me/epic4gtouch/kernel/acs-eb30-clockwork-epic-touch-4g-sep-20-4-00-pm.tar
Download ODIN.
Enter download mode by powering off phone, reboot holding volume down and power button until warning screen pops up. Press volume up on warning screen to enter download mode. Connect phone with usb.
Put downloaded tar into pda spot and start flash.
PHONE WILL BOOT WITH YELLOW TRIANGLE ON BOOT SCREEN BUT WE WILL FIX THAT.
After phone reboots run auto root program available here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
follow instructions on that thread and run the RUNFIRST.bat
YOU NOW HAVE ROOT. Now we will fix it so were back to stock kernel (no yellow triangle)
Download stock kernel .
First link is for odin flashable kernel, the second is one click odin (SUPER SIMPLE)

Thanks, I'm trying to convince my GF to get the sgs2, she's on USCC. This will come in handy.
I actually put together a more streamlined package on the other thread. If someone could test it out, that would help others.
Inspired by the above enthusiasm, I put together a quick package to simplify rooting for your phone (if I had a phone to use, I could put together something even simpler)
Keep in mind, I'm doing this all "blind" since I don't have a phone. This procedure might not work, but should be pretty close to working. With some feedback I can fix it up quickly.
Thanks - chris41g for EK02+CWM zImage, themac79 for FB14 zImage, Margey for testing and helping work out root procedure
1) download the USCC rooting package [USCCROOT-sfx.exe]
2) extract the files
USCCROOT-sfx.exe is a 7zip self-extractor that contains all the files you'll need. Just double-click in windows and specify where you want to extract, we'll assume C:\
3) connect phone to PC
make sure USB drivers are installed
enable USB debugging (menu->settings->applications->development)
4) install E4GT EK02 kernel+CWM using ODIN OneClick
double-click on C:\USCCROOT\e4gtauto-sfx.exe
double-click on C:\USCCROOT\SPH-D710.EK02_KERNEL_CWM-OneClick.exe (thanks chris41g for zImage)
E4GTAUTO: select Option E (Extra Options), then Option H (Reboot to ODIN Download Mode), press any key to continue, then select Option J (Previous Menu)
ODIN-OC: Wait until yellow COM port shows up in ODIN OneClick window
ODIN-OC: Press Start on the ODIN OneClick screen
Phone will reboot when done
ODIN-OC: Close the ODIN OneClick window
5) Install persistent root
E4GTAUTO: select Option A (Install Root)
E4GTAUTO: when done, press any key to reboot, then any key to continue
6) install USCC FB14 kernel using ODIN OneClick
double-click on C:\USCCROOT\SCH-R760.FB14_KERNEL-OneClick.exe (thanks themac79 for zImage)
E4GTAUTO: select Option E (Extra Options), then Option H (Reboot to ODIN Download Mode), press any key to continue
ODIN-OC: Wait until yellow COM port shows up in ODIN OneClick window
ODIN-OC: Press Start on the ODIN OneClick screen
Phone will reboot when done
ODIN-OC: Close the ODIN OneClick window
7) you are done
E4GTAUTO: select Option K (Exit)
Ha ha even better man. Now I just need to figure out how to pull the stock odin information off so we can start at least creating odin roms. Need a debloated one soon. I will play with it more in the morning.

anyone working on an ICS rom for the US Cellular version? Shouldn't be too hard since it's basically identical to our phone. The source was released a few days ago I believe.

Hi All,
I'm getting ready to replace my USCC Mez with something new.
I'm torn between the Galaxy S II and the Aviator.
My main concern with either is the availability of custom ROMs and extensive development.
Which phone would be better in your opinion?
Are there any custom ROMs for either phone yet?
My searching has turned up a few discussions, but no real useful info.
Thanks in advance,
Elmojo

got my uscellular galaxy s 2 rooted
now i just want to find a way to backup my stock rom then flash different roms anyone have any idea how?
cwm doesnt work with this phone
Is there any information on how to backup your current rom or flash back to stock rom? I'm really paranoid and I'm trying to be as cautious as possible about this so I don't brick my phone, also so I have a backup plan in case something goes wrong and I have to send it in or something.
Thanks

[Q] Kies closes on GB27 update

I'm trying to update my old phone which is now my sister in law's. It's stock unrooted ICS FL24.
When I try to use Kies to update, it gets through the first step of dowlnoading firmware upgrade components, but when it reaches 100% the window hangs for 30 seconds or so and then disappears and Kies closes.
It's the most recent version of Kies, I even uninstalled and reinstalled it, but it's still doing it. Has anyone come across this and a way to fix it? My sister in law wants the update but I can't seem to do it for her.

Use that link to download an Odin One-Click tool that will make your life easy. Whether you're looking to root her phone or keep it un-rooted, there is a tool for you on that page. Download whichever one of the tools you need whether or not you need to root her phone or keep it un-rooted. RESTORE versions will WIPE all user data from the phone. NODATA versions will NOT wipe user data from the phone. After downloading the one-click tool you need, simply turn off her phone and once it's fully powered down, press and hold volume down and the power key at the same time until you see the Samsung Galaxy S2 logo. You can let go now. It will boot into something called "Download mode" and that's what we need.
I'm going to assume you've already installed the samsung drivers since you're using KIES. If not, get them from here and install.
Make sure the phone is FULLY CHARGED at this point.
After the drivers are installed, launch the Odin One-Click program and wait for it to appear. Once it's loaded go ahead and connect your phone to the computer. Make sure your phone is still in download mode before you connect to the computer! The top left box in that Odin window should light up with a yellow box with "0:COM#" in it, once that's lighted up, go ahead and click start at the bottom.
If you do not see a yellow "0:COM#" light up in the top left set of boxes, you may need to run the ODIN One-Click as an administrator.
DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR PHONE AND DO NOT TURN IT OFF WHILE ODIN IS WORKING! Once it's done, it will change the bigger box on the left of the "0:COM#" to a green box with the word "PASS!" in it. Once this happens, the phone will reboot on its own. Once the phone reboots, it's safe to disconnect from the computer.
And that's it. You've skipped trying to use the crappy KIES software and you've successfully installed GB27 (JB 4.1.2)! I'd say it's time to celebrate!
Hope this helps you. Cheers!
(alternatively you could just follow the instructions from the page where you download your ODIN tool from... Thanks to "Admin" from that website for the post, garwynn from here for leading me there, and QBKing77 for instructions that taught me how to do this back when ICS just released for this phone. )

No. Use a NODATA rooted FL24, install Titanium (PRO highly recommended), and backup all your apps, call log, sms inbox, etc.
Then put the Titanium Backup folder from your SDcard on a PC (or somewhere else safe, off the internal storage. External SD card is ok too).
Then run the RESTORE ROOTED GB27, which will repartition your internal storage, likely wiping everything. This is why you moved your backups. Install Titanium and restore your backup. Reboot.
Then reboot to recovery and do a nandroid backup. Copy this backup to your PC for futureproofing.
Now, if you want to be unrooted, you can Odin a NODATA UNROOTED GB27, and you should have all your apps and such intact, without root access.
