I have tap tap app now and it works ok, can be unresponsive at times. I was wondering if anyone knows of other alternative apps that work better. Maybe one that programs the volume rocker to unlock/wake phone or allows the use of the bezel buttons to unlock/wake phone.
well, just look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=990463
well , tap tap app is a must for those fones that lack any physical buttons
its a life saver on my Desire HD,, other wise my power button would be wrecked ,,
overall works fine for me, battery drain is not much of an issue, however in AIRPLANE mode, the proximity sensor stops working and its back to the power button ?
i e mailed the same question to the developer of tap tap app, and he too was clueless about the airplane mode issue

first, sorry for my bad English.
like a month ago, i was in the pool with my defy,
i captured like a40 photos,
then my phones camera, and power button stopped to work.
i was in shop, they sad there a water resistance and he can only clean my phone, maybe it will work.
now after a month, the power button sometimes work and sometimes didn't work, but the camera is working.
now the question, there is any application, that making the volume button like power button?
than you for reading and help
I have same question as power button is not easy to press
Try cm7 the volume rocker can wake the device if you are after waking up the device.

than you, i founded good appliaction "tap tap app"
it uses the light sensor on the phone.
You can use screen-lock widget to lock your phone,
and use some app to unlock screen such as "shake unlock"
When my phone is locked (screen turned off), the volume rocker and camera buttons don't work. With my Samsung Focus, I could use both while the screen was completely locked. Is anyone else experiencing this?
For camera button, there is a setting (in Settings->Camera) to turn it on or off while sleep/locked.
My camera button doesn't wake the phone if I force sleep while in an app, such as the xda app. If I force sleep from the home screen, I'm alright. If I leave the app in the background, it works OK. However, like some others have stated, in order for the camera to wake the phone, you have to make sure you're not spending time on the intermediate position of the button, it has to be pressed all the way down quickly. If you take too long to do it, the camera will not wake the phone.
At least, this is how it is behaving for me.
Setting's correctly set, and I have been pushing it down all the way and holding it... Sometimes it does work, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern. Maybe my device is defective.
Anyone able to adjust the volume settings with the screen off?
Same with my camera button. After update, it's about 85% accurate. Before, it was 25%.
Volume does not work when off.
PS: Samsung Focus 1st gen doesn't allow Volume when screen is off, unless you applied some hack or custom ROM that did that. I just turned mine back on and tested to be sure.
I think what you remember is that when the Lock Screen was active, you could use the Volume Rockers, and that still works on the Lumia.
Huh, maybe I was just remembering wrong...I'll have to test it when I get home tonight...
Hi,
I can confirm operations as described above. With the phone locked, the volume rockers do nothing. You have to press the standby/lock button in order to get the screen to come on, and then you can use the volume rockers.
I have not tested this with my HTC HD7 on TMO, but will and get back to you.
As far as the camera button waking up a locked Lumia 900, you have to press and hold the camera button for a second and then press it again in order to get the camera app to load if the screen is locked. This won't work if the option under "Settings --> Applications --> pictures+camera--> Press and hold camera button to wake up the phone" is set to off.
Again, it isn't a simple tap, you have to hold it down for a second, and then press it again a second time for another second or two and the camera will turn on.
You'll see a little pad lock in the lower left if you have the phone horizontal and in the upper left if you have it vertical.
I don't know if this is how all the Lumias work, but it is how I can get the camera app to work when the phone is locked.

This, among other detrimental things, have just started happening on my 900 today. It worked fine for the last 5 weeks & now it's become pretty much ****. Would rather trade it in for a Titan II than do an unreliable hard reset.

While locked and screen off my volume rocker and camera buttons do work, same as my HD7.

An unreliable hard reset?? You had me there until you mentioned an HTC device. Reliable does not include the letters H-T-C.
Well said. Sure wish I could quote again. Come on Board Express. Fix what you broke damnit.

Same here (except the HD7 part, of course). I do find I have to press the volume rocker once, then hold it down in order to change volume, which strikes me as being by design to avoid accidental presses.
Concur with lowlymarine... 2nd press needed on the lumia 900. 2nd press not needed the HD7... slight nusiance, like a dialog box popping up asking 'are you sure?'
When trying to set my Desire into standby mode by pressing the power button it switches on the display again at once. Even trying some other ROMs doesn't fix the problem.
Does anyone know why and has a solution for this problem?
Your power button might be damaged. Look for a screen lock app on the playstore and use it to put your device to sleep instead of using the power button.
via xda app
Same with such an app. Display comes back again.
Volume button sems to be active too cause after display comes back sometimes the volume setting "sound " appears .
No idea or wrong category here?
Did you activate a "volume key wake" that enables volume keys to wake up the device ?
On my Desire these buttons can be a bit hard to push sometimes, maybe you have the opposite effect ?
Edit : such settings may be found in the "display" section of the settings tab
No, even several other Roms didnĀ“t fix the problem.
Also watched: the volume funktion seems to be active in background too cause after almost every "wake up" the ring volume setting is displayed for 1 second.
Seems to be a hardware problem but the Desire did not fall down or sth like that...
When choosing trackball or volume key for wakeup in the settings, the display always switches on and off. Power button still causes a hard reset.
I got an uh-oh carrier swap phone when I switched from AT&T to Verizon. That phone had a defective vibrate motor and was swapped for free to another Verizon phone. This one seems do have issues with gestures.
With phone in "sleep" mode (screen off, laying on table) I can pick it up in portrait mode and double tap and nothing happens. If I press power button (bringing me to "lock screen") double tap screen puts the phone to sleep mode.
In sleep mode when pick up in landscape, pressing volume down activates camera as it should.
From sleep mode to portrait, and swipe screen left/right/up/down does nothing (I have activated all of these gestures for testing purposes)
I verify that double tap does put phone to sleep from lock screen, but when phone is in sleep mode, it doesn't seem to register any screen activities.
I have tried all of this with and without a screen lock, or pin/pattern. No combination of security makes it work.
I did a full reset of phone and it still doesn't work.
I did multiple restarts.
I don't have root, and I have done no modifications to the phone.
It is fully up to date with software.
I tried restoring factory versions of home screen app and lock screen app, and another factory reset.
The phone shipped with 5.01 and was updated to 6.0. It hasn't worked at all at any point.
What should I try now?
Is this a hardware problem or software?
My 2 previous phones had double tap to wake working just fine.
I promise the setting is enabled
Thanks.
I meant to add:
I tested the level meter and accelerometers and they work fine.
The phone rotates when you turn on autorotate, so I don't think it's the same issue as people who can't use auto rotate.

Currently in the EXACT same situation. My replacement phone that just came in isn't responsive to wake-up gestures. Tried everything, am sure it's a hardware issue. Currently contacting HTC to get a replacement for this replacement, but they keep telling me "we'll contact you within 24 hours to discuss further" and then just not calling me. I suggest you contact HTC support as well.
So the power button of my Pixel 2 XL is unfortunately dying. Sometimes it works a few times and then a button press does nothing. It also triggers easily a double press (noticeable because that starts the camera) when tapping it only once. Gets really annoying when you think you have powered it off but it is still powered on in your pocket...
Are there any ideas how to fix the issue without opening the device? I don't want to open the device by myself after I ****ed up my Nexus 6 after a battery swap.
Any workarounds for the problem? Currently I use Novas remapping of the home button for power off but that is not really comfortable because you have to leave the current app for that.
Different roms have different options that may partly help. Often they are at settings/system/gestures.
For wake, use fingerprint. For sleep, set a very short timeout, or see if you can find a rom with double-tap to sleep option. If camera starts at the wrong time, disable the camera quick start.
But none of this will help you if the phone is really turned off. Can you really live with not knowing whether you can start the phone if it runs out of power?
I will look into some of the options. I'd like to stay with the stock rom though (but I have root if that helps).
The button is not that broken. If I press really hard I can always get it to work again, so I have no fear it won't power on again.
