I just got an email from a dev from "zune social", about a review I gave a game.
It wasn't a good review, but it wasn't mean-spirited or anything. Just sort of a "blah, not too good". But I got a message from the dev asking for more input to help the game, etc.
Kinda brings it all home, your reviews aren't anonymous.
(the odd thing is, it came to my old hotmail that I used to have associated with my xbox live account. I've since switched to my main hotmail account, but the message went to the old one.)
I sent a review to li'messenger too and they surprisingly responded with some fantastic news regarding the next iteration they will release!
It surely isn't anonymous but good thing its not
I guess that must be stated in the t&c's somewhere.

This may be unpopular to say but sometimes I wish the net was a little less anonymous. People hide behind the anonymity to be the biggest jerks they can be.

(for the record I wasn't rude in my review, just didn't like the game)
Did it come directly from the developer? or was it sent from him via some microsoft channel? I can see this as beneficial to developers as they can get direct feedback on possible improvements.

I think it's a good thing that devs are able to communicate with the user (not really via an official way). That way devs can make the games and apps better.
The lack of anonymity also makes it a little more obvious when a dev pumps his own reviews. I've seen one dev give his own review a 5 twice while giving a competing app a negative review.

I've had that happen numerous times (through my Zune Social inbox), and i'm more than happy to provide additional feedback and help these devs out.
They don't have access to your e-mail address though, they only see what your Zune tag is (which is the same as your Xbox Live account), and your Zune Tag has its own social component and messaging system. People can send you a message through your Zune Tag. So these emails are simply notifications for you to check your Zune Social for messages and such (and you can do this through Zune.net, or through the Zune software).

The Yikes was more of a surprised yikes. And yes I know they're not contacting you directly. Just kinda came out of left field.
As prjkthack mentioned, developers don't necessarily see your email addresses, only your Zune tag. When using the Zune software, people can message each other via the Zune tag and so that's probably what the developer did.
I've seen quite a few people write reviews on apps, including mine, that contained incorrect information. There's no real way to write a response to the reviewer in a way which other people can see (unless you write your own review, but even then, it'll only show in your country's marketplace). Using the Zune tag, it's possible to let them know of any inaccuracies and hopefully they'll re-review the app.
I've been contacted several times by devs about my reviews, both positive and negative. I think its a good thing, and shows me that devs are serious about improving their products.
One was even a, "hey, we've updated our game, can you try the new version and update your review?" It shows that they are listening to the comments and I have no problems with this.
I'm with those for devs being able to contact reviewers. It just gives them a chance to get feedback on improving their apps. Since they don't get your actual email address, I don't see this as negative in the slightest. However, I would not agree if they had your email address (because of retaliatory SPAM bombs, harassment, etc.) but I'm pretty sure they don't have your email address so it doesn't matter.
The contact is good I think.
I was also contacting some devs and they responded, it means we can have any input in creation of better software.

I think IE 9 Mobile in 2011 is a priority. We don't need any plugins if we have HTML5.

I might have missed something as I've not checked if I can set this on my server, but I seem to have lost the ability to tell my phone not to sync emails with Exchange at certain hours of the day?
In 6.5 I could set Peak and Off-Peak hours and then tell it how to get emails at those times, so I would have push email between 8am and 11pm and nothing while I'm sleeping.
If I'm not missing something, then this really needs to be added back in please!
If it's not in the suggestions list then add it please.

I recently tried the Graphic ly comic reader app in the Windows Phone Marketplace. Hoping to find a comic reader as good as droid comic viewer I found myself very very disappointed. The controls are shoddy, pinch to zoom is flakey and you have to zoom all the way out to turn the page. This is a far cry from the original video that was shown to consumers.
I understand that newly released products are no always perfect so I figured I would share my concerns with the developer. Their response was shocking and disappointing.
We would like to improve our WP7 app much more in the future, but I
will be straight with you: due to the low sales of the windows 7
phones we have put the improvement of the app lower on our priority
list than the continual improvement of our other apps.

That is such a load of happy horse****. There are many apps where the developers are frequently updating and providing excellent communications between themselves and the users.
When WP7 takes off - and it will - I hope that many others are aware of the developer's attitude and shut them out. Let the money go to another comic app.
I was very dissapointed with the graphic.ly app, especially compared to what we've seen before. This attitude isn't going to get them any customers. If they're not going to put any effort in the phone app, I don't see any point in buying comics from them or getting their adobe air app.
Shame, i was hovering over it recently....

That's depressing. Low WP7 sales volume not good. Hopefully this app dev is just a WP7 hater.
Considering that, at least in the US, folk generally wait until their account is due for a subsidized upgrade before getting a new phone (mine just happened to drop in late November ), it makes sense that sales for WP7 haven't exploded yet. I could see holding off on making an app until WP7 grows in market share, but to release a shoddy app, charge for it, and then not support it just because it's not a cash cow yet is simply horrid customer relations. Seeing as the potential dollar is apparently all that matters to these jokers, I'll be sure and speak with my wallet, and mark this one off of the potential to-buy list.

iirc i read some developers are complaining because they have no way to know how much they are selling, and microsoft will start paying in february... so how does this guy know that they are not doing ok?

On a more positive note, I have contacted Robot Comics, the developer of Droid comic viewer from android. I used thier app right before I went to WP7 and it was very intuitive and easy to use in portrait and landscape. It also supported locally added comics.
After emailing I recieved some very good news.

I am not trying to come across as anyone of importance but I love WP7 and would personally like to see it succeed so I figured the best I can do is let the developers know that they have a potential customer. Also does anyone know how I can get in contact with MS support?

Hopefully someone from XDA can validate, but if this is indeed true I thank you for clearing things up Its nice to see brands out there connecting with their customer and stepping up to the bat like this.
Hopefully we'll see the app improved! You could always open it up on CodePlex and let XDA hackers have at it!
It is indeed me - How would you like to verify it? I can give you my mom's phone number... How about this - we have promo codes enabled in the AIR app. Use "techcrunch" (no quotes) and get a free comic. We used it for an old techcrunch article, and I think its still alive. Then when you use the WP7 phone, it will be in there, and you can give me solid feedback on the mistakes we made.
Tell me more about CodePlex. I would be happy to let the community at it. We are doing something similar with our Win7 app. Building out APIs that are secure and can be built on is a personal passion of mine.

I did not want to post the name but originally I wrote the email in reply to the email I received about you guys releasing a Google web app to this emai "[email protected]"
I received a reply back from a Audrey Zarr stating what I posted. I sent her a polite email expressing my dismay with that type of business attitude and never got a reply back. I certainly wasn't trying to slander your company but knew it would be best to share this info on the web.
I understand that this is a v1 app and I would have been perfectly happy with a "we are working to improve this app" type of answer. Instead I was given the previously posted information. Currently your app is sitting at 1 star, I would hope you guys would want to improve that. Best of luck on your next release.

Your question is quite valid, and in some ways, her response (we are a small company, and we have to focus on the products our community want) is correct. Except the part about us abandoning development on the WP7 app.
A couple of other points (really just FYI). The video from the MIX conference was a proof of concept. We were asked to show off what Deep Zoom would look like in our reader, and so we did. As the months passed and the WP7 software progressed, it became clear that we wouldnt be able to have deep zoom on the finished app.
Other issues: The dev phone we had was a samsung, which is not even one of the release phones. It made things like having pinch/zoom work properly really tough.
So, do we want to make the app better? Of course we do. We want all of our apps to be solid and work at a high level. I believe that the WP7 platform has potential.

I understand that there were time constraints but phone operating systems as of recent seems to lean on their marketplace for success. A bunch of half baked apps won't appeal to anyone.(see palm) That was my main reason for reaching out. I also understand focusing on what the market wants, Microsoft has deep pockets and this OS will eventually be pretty successful. I will spend my money and time on apps that were well made and supported from the get go. As a vendor of comics I am sure your business relies on repeat business.
MS really need to sort out its advertising campaign i think. Im in the UK and its all very quiet over here, those `really` wouldnt want me to buy a wp7. i was in the US and noticed the presence of WP7 a bit more... but still the question is what is the best way to advertise WP7. what would make you think... i want one of those!!!! doh ive clicked the poll button but it wont give me any options to sort the poll help!!! im sure this happened to me last time.
They need to show what the phone does instead of a bunch of people just using it. The big advantage wp7 has its its unique and fluid interface and they need to show this of more.
I also think they should push the zune pass a lot more as for the law abiding music lovers this is the best music service there is. It also would help if the uk got the 10 perminant downloads a month that the usa get.
As for its presence i don't know if i watch different tv to the rest of you (maybe as my wife makes me watch crap) but i see the wp7 adds more then any other phone though the iphone is very close second.
They also need to check the stores as they are not pushing it bar orange who from what i have seen are the only ones clued up and pushing it (even the tv adverts are for the mozart on orange). When i went to the o2 store the display had 2 demo phones but both where vandalized and just left and the display itself was tucked away round a corner. I think they should also send there own reps out to shopping malls like htc are doing for the desire range and push there brand with there own sales people, displays and demo's. Give people a chance to see it and be shown how it works properly they will love it but one thing i get from non phoney people is that it looks different so they don't know if they would be able to use it then once they see how easy it is there hooked but they need to be shown first before they are sure.

You are right mate. Office is nice. However this should at least match DocsToGo.
It is available for WM and Android.
Current Office is sweet but absolutely too limited.
Seriously, it's not one thing that really sets WP7, it's the INTEGRATION of ALL those things that sets it apart. When I show my focus off to people, I start with the integration with contacts to facebook (that I have their number/email) and show that I can write on their wall, send an email, txt and stuff and if they have an address, how I can quickly map it to Bing and then find directions. Also updating my facebook status and commenting. Then I show them the voice command for search to call people or find a place and directions. The dedicated camera button. Xbox games and it's graphics. I forget to show them Zune (but I don't have a zune pass) besides how if I go to a youtube video that it saves my recent history so I don't have to remember the site. I also show them pics uploading to facebook and show them how my pictures automatically upload to skydrive and tell them about the 25 GB free of online storage.
It's really how all those things come together which is why I love my WP7. It's SYNERGY! lol.

I hope you are not serious about business users. As our Chief Security Officer put it for our CEO and CTO when they brought their wp7 devices to work and wanted integrate them with our Exchange environment: "leave the toys at home".

The subject of on-device encryption just put a final nail.
It might be ok for small businesses not to care about these policies but large organizations rely on the security provided by the Exchange if they care about security of their email transactions.

I went into O2 today and asked to see the HTC HD7 (was with a friend and left mine at home). and the guy said, yes, but we also have the iPhone and took us to it without asking me. Which greatly saddened me as the WP7 has better features like (bing search to find places near you faster, back button, smooth/glossy/simple interface, Xbox live, better music marketplace, better SDK ect). but if you don't know much, you would have go to the iPhone. Yet another idiot who doesn't know anything about phones. Selling phones >.<.

The mix is important. Fluid modern OS. And integrity with MS services.
Also the fact that WP7 devices are highend. Good browser and Email. Homescreen.
Its a tough choice I think which comes down to personal preferance at least it shows that wp7 has a lot of good things working for it. Looks like Xbox live is taking a good lead Microsoft would be wise to exploit their Xbox users to give wp7 a good advantage over other phones

WP7 actually has better Exchange support than Android, and the data on the devices are more secure than on Android devices.

Exactly. I own 2 small businesses and WP7 is fine (better that WM and Android for me). I'd wager most WP7 users are not in large corporate environments where email security is on the forefront - I can't imagine anyone hacking my phone for my email.
davidebanks was serious in recommending WP7 for business users. Probably the majority of them, as there are many, many industries with mobile needs that don't need such airtight email security (it can still be fairly secure, btw).
To say that he shouldn't be serious and to quote your Chief Security Officer's cute little one-liner dismissing every device on the platform as a toy is a disservice to those using this tread for what it is intended for. There is a thread comparing WP7 to Android, btw.

Hello everybody, I'm Saad from Windows Phone Daily and I thought it'd be worth sharing a concept I worked up last night and published this morning to the site.
It's actually in response to the editorial I read in WMPoweruser from Malcolm.Williams in which he pointed out many potential issues in Mango's Threads feature. I was pretty compelled by the idea of improving the feature, so I decided to pretty up his own concept. Instead I ended up with something a little more complex with more features than I thought I would include
Anyway to make a long story short, I noticed many comments about the iffy Threads implementation and so I did something about it. The pictures are pretty large so I can't upload them here, but please feel free to check it out at the site and leave us a comment there or here about what you think!

I Am Honestly don't like your concept. The pivot implementation just doesn't feel the regular pivots (bigger fonts for each pivot). And I read the article on wmpoweruser too, I feel like the author was trying to create a problem that wasn't there. I for sure dont care much about where the message was from ot sent to as long as the conversation flows. Plus, I believe in mango, you can see which platform you are currently chatting on that's all it matters.

I agree & disagree, I see no problem with the way it is, but this concept does add a nice feature too.
Thats exactly what we propesed in the other thread.
I would rather make the pivot text big and than have the name as the title so you keep it in line with the default panorama controls (check email hub or marketplace to see how the design should be http://newsziphone.buyer.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/WP7-Marketplace-Apps-300x291.jpg instead of ALL --> FIRSTNAME LASTNAME).

The main concern is the frequency in which IM's are delivered and that people use SMS for more important stuff like adresses and meeting times. If those get rapidly sunk in all the high frequent IM's comming in, the average consumer will switch the feature off or will be annoyed by trying to find this address back.
And switching with pivots will prevent you from opening a selection menu, it will keep the user experience streamlined and on the same level. It will be more pleasant and quicker to use and/or find the information you need.
I like the concept of the pivot feature but it does not look quite right as people have said, really good idea though and I hope they implement something like it.

Again a lot of ideas to toss around the swimming hole, so to speak. Its surprising to find a more intelligent discussion of it on xda though...but again it is also why it is xda DEVELOPERS and not USERS
Again, I never said in the article that a unified messaging hub is a bad idea. Heck I was impressed and as a user anyone would be impressed. But Microsoft has this thing of good idea, poor implementation. That's not to say that the current implementation is poor, but like everything, there is room for improvisation. I think a pivot is far easier than going through an option menu and in the options there should be far more filtering available.
The people I have multiple contact information with, I don't use the same mannerisms or speech. Frankly if I have a SMS conversation with someone, I won't be discussing the same thing on MSN or vice versa. Chances of me myself switching a conversation due to availability is great, but what about users who keep those identities separate? There is still freedom for me to do as such, but wouldn't it be far easier than punching through a setting?
Have you read about Brandon Watson's challenge to Molly Wood? What about her first impressions? Do you feel her complaints are valid?
Please don't derail this thread into an Android/W7 argument (again!), she happens to have lots of followers and any of her criticism will resonate with many and in my opinion will help address some things faster (some things she hasn't discovered yet so try to give a her break on that).
I'm not running Mango so I'd like to hear from people who do and know if they agree with what she has to say.

The only problem with her review is that too many of her "cons" are simply based on ignorance (and I don't mean that in a pejorative sense). She didn't know the correct way to do something on WP7, and tried to apply Android techniques. When they didn't work, she assumed that the feature was either broken or missing.
If her followers read those criticisms and assume she is right, it may prevent them from giving WP7 a fair chance on their own.
Yep. Tis already begun. Two commenters have said they won't buy based on "Molly's impressions" and "little annoyances" she's described.
Her only real beef should be with the navigation. Outside of that, she has an argument as to comparitive number of apps. Yet, she hasn't explored the marketplace thoroughly enough to actually talk about what's there. She just knows two apps she uses aren't there.
I'd give her some time with it and I'm certain she'll clear up some of the things she's already posted which are incorrect.
She will... She complained before on her podcast about not having an app for facebook chat then corrected it on her blog after she was told it's built-in. Hopefully the listeners also read the blog, otherwise some might be a lost cause already.

I'm really glad she's made such a fuss over the navigation and I really hope Microsoft pay attention. It's bloody stupid as it is - not matter what the reasons may be (I've heard licencing issues?) Microsoft need to sort this out.
She has some other valid points, but she hasn't (as she admits) touched upon a lot of the more unique features of WP7.5

Apparently turn by turn is indeed due to licensing issues but with Nokia owning Navteq this should be sorted in Tango (hopefully) or Apollo.

I sure hope it is, because as it now stands, you can guarantee that it will be the cause of a lot of mocking from Android users. And comments such as this one I read on the article page aren't going to help much either:
Well Molly I have to say I actually enjoy the navigation. Think about it, if everyone's satnav did this, that commercial where the guy is driving his car and his wife calls and then the satnav (which is a woman's voice, btw) goes, 'Motel is on the right' and the wife goes, 'MOTEL?!? **CLICK**' that would never happen. While I agree it is a bit of an annoyance, I like it better. And it's fun when it congratulates you. Didn't you say you like the "pretty sounds?" Well when you do something right, it makes a pretty sound. so, please don't harp on what is probably the best implementation of navigation in the history of cell phones. Also, The thing I don't like about other satnav implementations, is that they get annoying. "In 1.5mi. turn left onto Camino St. then turn left onto Avery Avenue" then .25 mi later it says nearly exactly the same thing. For me what's great about the Mango implementation is that you only have to listen to the annoying computerized lady voice when you forget what your next turn should be. That's the brilliance of the Mango implementation.

It's one thing to defend Microsoft for having no choice but to implement the system as it is due to licensing issues, but it's quite another to try to make the absurd claim that this system is better in any way. It's not.
it wasn't a biased or negative critique. id say it was spot on, by a regular user trying to use it as a daily driver. speaking of daily driver, I had no idea navigation was so broken. ugh !
yes, ios and android are mentioned .... if you are surprised or annoyed by this, smell some coffe. ios and android are dominating the market for a few reasons, this review sheds light on them.

The verdict is in, it's a 50/50. I read what she had to say and find her point about Skydrive fair. It needs to have a proper app and a desktop client with better functionality. For techies it might be fine but for an average user it's a bit of a mess.

If you are going to call yourself a writer, and agree to do a test drive of a device, you owe to your readers to find the correct answers to any concerns or misunderstood features of said device. This is where she failed, and this is where CNET always fails.
This is nothing more than letting your Mom or Sister borrow your phone and you then ask them for an opinion. They are not allowed to seek actual advice, from an actually knowledgeable source.
This type of review is a disservice to technology in general. That is my opinion and that is why I do not use CNET for anything important.
I agree completely. She made so many mistakes and it was obvious she didn't bother researching any of her so called problems. The majority of the stuff she said wrong was corrected in her comments which she clearly didn't read. What a joke.

I dunno, but the poor girl looks 10 years older than she really is.

Outlook and calendar
Watching a relative of mine having the Galaxy II, then I really understand how far behind email and calendar is... I just can't believe that she couldn't see that!!!
Merging mailboxes with threaded email... Outlook, Gmail, Live and Facebook calendar all in one with different colors... even better than the pc-version
Someone should have assisted her with this... someone who understands the value of it...
All that being said maybe it also means WP7 is not as simple as we all think for an average user.
Don't get me wrong, WP7 is very simple and intuitive but if you need a manual to understand some features then it means it could be made simpler.

if she got final mango like everyone else, there is a nice book to help the transition. right in the programs menu. with videos and text to speech for every, single, thing.

If a person is coming from a standard phone to WP7 their impressions will be different, then those coming from another platform. I personally don't find any of the OS's easier or harder to use they're just different, with their own learning
curve. All reviewers bring their own personal bias into reviews IMO. The question is whether you think WP7 is better, not equal to other platforms. If you ask that type of question you have to take the good with the bad.
The map directions tapping is silly, MS should have known better then to even bother to include such a poorly implemented feature. If they don't have the rights to do it properly then don't do it.

Than, they'd complain there's no default/built-in Turn by Turn Navigation. This is a no win scenario. People have to realize that MS was severely neutered by that anti-trust law suit. Now they are alot less aggressive & very careful so they are not sued again in this manor. Besides, people forget the 3rd Party apps like Garmin/etc & the fact that Nokia's map app is coming. The Mango Turn by Turn Navigation is nothing more than a way to tie people over till that comes.
Now, don't get me wrong, WP7 & Mango are far from perfect, but MS is working on it. They just posted a job listing to bring better PC/WP7 USB syncing of docs/etc.
Finally! Microsoft planning to connect Windows Phone and the desktop
Molly is supposed to be a power user btw, & she got so many things wrong in her review. I have to wonder if she even tried. It took her 2 weeks to set up WP7, it took me 2 hours tops. She must of never looked in the Office/Pictures Hub as she claims there's no Skydrive integration. Her review is nothing more than a joke. Scott Adams did a better review & he's an "average user," go figure.....
I think the only thing Molly can do now is to read up and post another review along the lines of "When I learnt how to use it" which should correct most of her errors.
Of course, as has been pointed out, if she genuinely made these errors then there must be a reason...(and I'm not going to say she's stupid).
