[Q] I know you guys get sick of helping noob but I just rooted and need help!

I have been wanting to root and try a custom rom but I was scared of brick. Anyway I finally rooted with Unrevoked 3.3 which installed Clockwork recovery also and after that I installed rom manager. When I went to do a backup of current rom it said I need to install Clockwork recovery first but its there already. I know there is guides everywhere but thats the problem not sure which to use to learn what to do before I try flashing new rom. What about kernel I really don't understand where to go from here. I am rooted and Clockwork recovery flashed but don't know where to go from here. I am not a idiot just a little guidance please! I really want learn process of installing new and restoring old roms with my Evo. How do I know what other updates need to done before using a certain rom like kernel and radio? No I just cheked to see if I could boot to recovery with vol/power buttons and seems fine Clockwork Recovery is there. So I should just let Rom Manager try to install Clockwork Recovery again? What would be my steps to installing new rom after I get rom manager to backup current rom? Thanks Alot!

Well first backup your rom and wimax keys and then go to the xda android development section and download a rom, clear cache /dalvik/ and I think its system restore something like that..I don't use cwr

Just dl rom go to rom manager
I think its install from memory card and rom manager takes care of the rest....you can also dl roms from this forum on ur phone it makes it easier

First of all, if you're certain that your recovery is installed, then you need to decide what rom and what type of rom you want to install? For instance, do you want a Sense based rom (the HTC overlay that your EVO came with) or an AOSP rom (Pure Android like on the Nexus)? For a sense based rom, I suggest Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS-5. You can see photos of it as well as download it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471 and for an AOSP rom, I suggest Salvage-Mod 1.2.1. It can be downloaded from here: http://www.salvage-mod.com/node/4. Make sure you download the Google Applications from the same page. Whichever you decide to flash or any others, put them on your SD card. Now shutdown your device. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. There will be a short pause and then a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, you will see a set of options. One of the options will be "recovery". By the way, look at the top of the screen and make sure it displays "S-OFF". If it displays "S-ON", you are not rooted. Anyway, select recovery. Your phone will vibrate and display a white EVO screen and then boot into recovery. Your recovery should be ClockworkMod. Go into the backup menu and select nandroid backup to make a backup of your current setup. You can always restore your device to the way it was if you don't like your new roms, mods, themes and kernels. After you've made your backup, go to the wipe menu and wipe everything except the SD card. After that, go to the flash zip menu and flash the rom you want to try. After it's finished, it should prompt you to reboot. Do so and be patient. You will appear to hang at a couple of places. Be patient. Let it finish. Be patient. Do not pull the battery. Be patient. After some time, you will see your rom's splash screen and then your new homescreen. If it is a sense based rom, go to menu-settings-system updates and select update profile after you've signed in with your Google credentials. Enjoy your new rom.

One more thing I just let Rom Manager install recovery and after that I did backup. The next step would be to dl rom and place it in sd card right? Do I need to rename file or update kernel or radio and where do I put the new rom for manager to find? Also I didn't use Unrevoked forever just 3.3 will I need to run the forever app also? I know what a noob! Man I really Thank You for helping! I am dying to try some new roms Froyo is boring. What rom what rom do you recommend? Thanks Again!

Root of card is preferred but anywhere is fine since you will have to point rom manager to it. Alot of roms come with kernels so I wouldn't sweat it. No need to rename. A good starting rom are any kingsroms insane fast and all features usually work most are still froyo but look much different than ur stock rom

Wouldn't say I'm a noob but I'm moderately knowledgeable in the flash process, I use amon RA (much better in my opinion) but was never good at giving instruction or directions lol

I, too, use amon RA and love it. As for not giving good instructions, don't worry about it. There have been numerous times when I've given summarized instructions because I either assumed the OP knew what I was talking about or I was rushing because I had something else to do. The important thing to remember is that you helped. Period!...

Thanks I am amazed how quick you helped me out! I am charging battery and then I will wipe and flash a rom with fingers crossed! I am a little scared I am not rich this is the only phone I have but you have a risk when doing any os changes with anything I guess! I will post results of first rom flash!

Not to worry if u run into any problems there are many threads with instructions to unbrick or fix ur problem and people here are usually very quick to help that's why I love it here....and rom manager is very good at not making mistakes in the flash process I used it when I first started so ur in good hands

Just d/l the latest version, put it on your sd card, reboot to recovery and flash it, then when you reboot to system, you'll get the prompt to go to the market and d/l each app.

You can either flash it immediately after flashing Salvage-Mod or boot into Salvage-Mod first and then press and hold the power button until the menu appear
Select reboot and then select recovery. Once you're back into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik cache and then flash the Google applications (gapps). Afterwards, reboot.

Well I first off wana say, you were in good hands with dougjamal.
To flash gapps:
1. Download the latest gapps / the ones provided in the salvage mod thread
2. Boot into recovery.
3. After you have flashed the salvage mod rom, wipe your cache and dalvik cache, then flash the gapps zip.

How do I upgrade rom (to cyanogen 7) after previously rooting with AutoRoot v2.4

I think the subject says it all. I currently have android 2.2 (can't even remember what ROM I flashed) after rooting using Autoroot 2.4. Now I'd like to update my ROM to cyanogen 7. How do I go about doing this?
It appears that if I go to power down and choose reset -> recovery that Android System Recovery loads w/ Build "RA-supersonic-v2.3 - HAUS MOD rev.A" -- I presume that this is the key to flashing cyanogen 7?
What I think I do is:
Put cyanogen 7 image (zip file) in root folder of SD card
Boot into recovery mode
Make backup (NANdroid)
Select Wipe, then Wipe data/factory reset
Select Flash zip from sdcard.
Select the CyanogenMod update.zip.
Reboot
and I'm done???
But I would appreciate some more or less brick proof direction.

Personally, I would suggest Deck's or SalvageMod instead of CM7. Both are optimized and fly!
Well you would need whichever CM7 you want to flash (stable, nightly, etc). Also, you will need GAPPS. Probably want a custom kernel too, I suggest Tiamat 4.1.0 SBC.
Download and put on SD card. Boot into recovery.
Wipe cache and dalvik. Then nandroid, select everything you want. I typically keep on backup on my card.
Wipe everything except for SD card twice. Navigate to Flash Zips. Flash the ROM, then GAPPS, then mount data in "Mounts" then flash Tiamat kernel. Reboot. Let it sit, then reboot. Then do the setup

Thanks for the help. I installed cyanogenmod 7 and it seems to be working. I'm now restoring my backups. I don't really like the default skin and much preferred my old rom. I wonder if just changing the theme will help (I think I like the more factory setup... is that called sense?)

The default skin is just a default. Take a look at my setup, picture in my signature). It doesn't look anything like the default setup for Cyanogen.

Tiamat kernel has different governors, has HAVS, and SBC. There is a sticky at the top of Q&A discussing kernels, it is really helpful.
Are you talking about the theme or launcher? You can always install another launcher from the Market. I have grown fond of Launcher 7. Themes, there are many options. Check Evo Themes and Apps section. You can also download themes to use in Theme Manager from the Market too.
OR, have you heard of UOT Kitchen? Google it, watch a tutorial. You can make your own flashable theme!
And yes, HTC's software is Sense. I suggest MikG, it has 4G and everything, much more functionality than stock software. It is Sense to

I'm trying to install the theme "HTC.Elegance-CM7-Theme v4.5.1"
To do so I've gone into the recovery menu
then I wipe cache and dalvik cache
then I load the HTC elegance theme zip file like I did to flash the cm7 mod and
reboot
however, it keeps booting into the default theme. What could I be doing wrong here?
Also, is there a graphical app that will allow quickly changing themes w/o multiple reboots?

CM7 seems quite slow. I may bail on this one and try something else. My last rom was sprintlovers and believe it or not I liked it a lot. Would MikG provide a similar experience or is something else similar recommended?

I guess you'd get a similar experience, its sense based, with all his extras. So if you lik sense, go ahead and try it.

Thanks again for all the tips. I ended up restoring my phone w/ NAND and then installing latest sprintlovers to get me up to 2.3. That's all I really need at this point, hopefully it does everything I need it to do.

Flashing the theme just loads it into your phone. Once you've flashed it you need to go into your app drawer and select the app called "Theme Chooser." When that opens you can scroll through the various themes loaded onto your phone. Select the one you just flash and hit "Apply." Bam! You're all themed up!

Rom, Kernels, and Themes...Oh My

Now, I have been reading and watching videos (qbking77 made some great ones) trying to understand everything before trying to change my phone. Now from what I understand, you need to root your phone, install a kernel, install CWM (preferred method of installing items), install a ROM, and then you can install a theme.
Qbking77 posted a video on "How to root and clockworkmod the Samsung Epic Touch 4G" but in this video it has links for a combined zip that will also install the eg30plus kernel. I have read that this kernel can have a LOS, so people have recommended the LoStKernel. So I take it I need to do individual steps? First root the phone? Then install the LoStKernel? Then install CWM? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Next question is regarding ROMs. There are so many of them, I get confused. Which is good? Is it a matter of which fits best with how people enjoy their phone? If so, I like having as pure of an Android experience as possible (I think that is called AOSP?) with great battery life. I hate bloatware, and want to install the stuff I want on my phone rather than what Sprint puts on it. I also dislike the layout, email, MMS, etc. that Samsung has put on the phone. Suggestions?
Lastly, themes. There are a bunch out there. I have seen some great ones such as brkear1967 ICS one. Though I am unsure. On my HP Touchpad I am using the Honeycomb 3D - SB theme (Awesome Theme) using Theme Chooser since CM7 was ported to it, but I know CM has not done a CM7 for this phone yet, which will probably come after they start rolling out ICS. Anyway, any suggestions when it comes to Themes would be greatly appreciated!

I was not rooted and all I did was odin the lostkernel and I gained root with cwm. From there you can flash whatever you want through cwm. Hope that helps.

That is exactly the theme I wanted to install, but when I went to go install the ROM I kept getting Force Closes of everything. I couldn't even see my screen, only the force closes of the status bar, MMS, etc.
So, I had to take the battery out, and boot into CWM to restore my backup of just the LoStkernel.
Steps I took:
1. Copied zip to my phone.
2. Booted into CWM.
3. Factory Reset / Wipe.
4. Clear Cache.
5. Clear Davik Cache.
6. Install.
After I restored, I applied the SB Rom then put on the Nothin But Honey Theme. A very nice Theme and Rom, but really wanted to try that Theme you had suggested. I think my problem was, since I did these steps for applying the Starburst Rom, that I did a Factory Reset / Wipe instead of:
1. Format System under Mounts and Storage.
2. Wipe Data.
3. Clear Cache.
4. Clear Davik Cache.
5. Install.
I am not sure though. I think I could always, boot into CWM and restore back to just the LoStKernel, then do the steps above for the AOSP Rom then the ICS Theme. But again, not entirely sure.

Also, another thing...since installing the above SB Rom and Nothin But Honey Theme, I went from 94% Battery down to 66% Battery in a matter of an hour. That does not seem normal to me.

What exactly does modding mean in the smartphone world? Does it mean taking bits and pieces from other roms and putting them into another? How do you do this?

No an expert but yes.
Most developer will put different mod for small things like. Icons, status bar, removing the sprint, or something more complicated like a 3 way boot to a rom that will allowed you to boot into recovery once you hold the power button..
Most required root or a special rom running to allowed the tweek or mod to work. Mainly you will need root access or super user access to apply the majority of little tweeks available.
Is not taking from anything is a change to the rom or feature enabling you to do something that your rom did not let you do before

Is not as easy as to get a specific part of a rom. Is what is available from the developer for your rom.
Sometimes they are tweeks available to most rom in general. You would find that in the developers forum as well on themes.
In general the person providing the tweek will let you know in the first post how to installed or flash the tweek. You would need to read and see if it work on your rom.
Sometimes the best tweeks are apply to a whole rom in general, making that rom the best choice. Making the choice easy as to just flash that rom from the developer. That's when you start following your favorite themer or developer.

Thanks for the help! Really appreciate it. Had another question about roms but I didn't want to start another thread. Lets say I'm currently running the blazer rom and I wanted to start using the jellybomb domination rom. How do I do this. What are the steps because I've read a lot of threads and they just say to do a wipe first then install. So do I just put the file into my external sd storage, do a wipe/factory reset and then install the rom?

Assuming you know how to flash and work with clockworkmod.
Make a folder on your internal SD called Root or whatever just to be organized. Place the rom inside the folder. This allowed you to be organized to what you are flashing keeping stuff separate to minimized flashing the wrong file.
What I do before a flash (make sure to reset wallet if you had setup before flashing)
Boot into recovery
Wipe user/data 3x
Wipe cache 3x
Wipe Dalvik 3x
Then look for the zip or installation file on the folder you save it.
Hit flash and you are golden.
Repeat steps for new rom.
Now if you are updating the same rom to a higher versión. The dev. Might tell you just to wipe cache and Dalvik and then flash.
Also there is a advance restore allowing you to just restore your data from a previous version. That way after you flash the update your phone boots with all your apps and setting you had before.

You also need to be aware of whether a ROM is Odexed, or Deodexed. They are not compatible with each other.

How does that effect flashing? I'm going to flash paranoid android so after I flash that say I want to begin using a different rom. How do I know if it's odexed or deodexed?

Updating from 4.0.4 LG8 to Latest

As the title says I'm extremely far behind on the updates. I would really appreciate any help getting up to the latest. I'm rooted on stock ROM with custom recovery.

Well first off to update you either need stock recovery or Odin back if you don't want to and prefer to stay rooted I would just flash frezzas stock rom which has a couple of mods for performance nothing big mostly just better battery saving and faster graphics heres the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1910947 by the way if u want to take an extra step to having stock get the odex file the difference is basically with deodex you can flash mods and themes but you can't on odex

Well first off to update you either need stock recovery or Odin back if you don't want to and prefer to stay rooted I would just flash frezzas stock rom which has a couple of mods for performance nothing big mostly just better battery saving and faster graphics heres the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1910947 by the way if u want to take an extra step to having stock get the odex file the difference is basically with deodex you can flash mods and themes but you can't on odex

Anyways, let me de-compact this:
At any time, you can upgrade from whatever build you were on to the latest stock ROM over at Freeza's Thread. I'd recommend deodex, but it's your call.
Since you are going from an old version of Android (4.08 up to 4.1.2), it would be best (in my opinion) to do a "full wipe" prior to flashing the ROM. Others would argue with me on this, but that's my standard operating procedure when flashing any ROM (even upgrades to the same ROM... it just helps prevent any Force Closes and other issues).
Anyways, the procedure for a full wipe. In TWRP, what I always do is the following:
1) Nandroid backup: I normally name it something along the lines of "2013-03-14 - ROM NAME - ROM VERSION." This way, when I look through my backups, I can easily see what I was running (what I'm restoring when I want to restore).
2) Wipe Menu - Factory Reset. This will wipe all custom data off of the phone. For me, this is a must before flashing any new ROM. Other people will "dirty flash" Roms on top of each other. For me, that's a recipe for disaster, as any leftover settings/code will inevitably interfere with the new ROM and will mess things up.
3) Wipe Menu - Dalvik Cache and Cache: If I recall correctly, the Factory Reset does both of these, but it doesn't hurt to do it again.
4) Install: This is where you find the ROM zip file you downloaded and install it. Should take less than a minute, but some larger ROMs could take a little longer (not 10 minutes, though).

3) Reboot Menu - System: Pretty self-explanatory, but it'll reboot your phone and you can set it up all over again.
