Okay, so I looked through forums and did not see this posted. I am new to Android phones and custom ROM, this entire process. I am a proud owner of a 1 day old Epic 4g. I attempted last night to upgrade to Bonsai 2.0.1.
I did the one click root, I also unstalled CWM3, I used odin to install PIT and modem files, and then I flashed the rom Bonsai 2.0.1. Phone booted up fine and every thing appears to be working fine. BUT when I go into "about phone" this is what I see
Firmware version: 2.2.1
Baseband version: S700.0.5S.DK17 (I thought this should be DK28)
Kernal version: 2.6.32.9
Build number: Bonsai4All_2.0.1
Harware Version: D700.0.5
So my question is. Is everything okay and I am just trippin for no reason. Or did I screw something up and I am really not on DK28 version ROM and how do I fix it.
Also any suggestions on Themes that work well with Bonsai. I dont see any of the cool bonsai tree for backgrounds and any ideas or Mods for extending battery life would be greatly appreciated.
Bonsai is a de-bloatware stock rom. I know glass blue&blue theme and emotionless beast v 1.0 themes work on Bonsai 2.0.1. If you want the dk28 modem, you will need to ODIN the dk28 modem. So, backup your data, then do the ODIN, then reroot, re-CWM v3, reflash Bonsai.
On a side note, I believe someone posted a way to install the modem without ODIN, but I don't remember where it is and I don't know how to do it without ODIN.
Can you tell me why do i need that modem DK28, as of right now my phone seems to be working just fine.
Also thank you for the theme suggestions.. Now I just have to learn how to install those also.

You don't need it but its preferred. the modem is the radio controlling all your signals.
There is a dk28 modem you can flash using odin without loosing data but if your happy with the dk17 modem there ita really no need to goto dk28. Wjy fix something that's not broken?

Maybe I do need to upgrade. I am not able to connect 4g network period and I live in Atlanta one of the 1st cities with 4g. And if I can do it without loosing data would be great

I can't link you from my phone but look for the ACS de-odexed rom. Thats where you will find just the modem
Android Creative Syndicate- From spontaneous ingenuity, comes creative brilliance
http://k0nane.info/rom/acs-dk28-odin-modem.zip. That's the latest version of Odin, the modem file and pit you need. If you flash the modem.tar file you put the file in PDA. If you flash modem.bin you put it in phone. The pit fil gies in the pit.
That is PERFECT..And I see what I did wrong.. I put the moden.tar file in the phone area and not the PDA section.
Okay, so in order to fix this..Do I have to just run Odin again and update it. Or after I run odin..I have to reflash the ROM again..and by doing this will I loose all my setting and things of that nature.
THANKS EVERYONE in this forum yall have been great with info and quick responses. Its great to see such collaboration. I should have been on a droid phone along time ago.

I believe you want to use the modem.bin, which is probably in that .tar.

Wrong section.
To answer your question though. You should go to the stock DI18 per the instructions on the wiki.
okay. how and where do i move it?
It should go in either Q&A or General. This is for ROM and Kernal development only. You can't move it unless you delete it and make a new thread. An admin will have to move it.
please dont make any new topics in this section. this goes in q & a. pls read rules
okay sorry. how do i delete my post?

Make sure you cant boot into any kind of recovery.
Call sprint technical they will try to reset it for you while you're talking to them on the phone act stupid but say you were trying to upgrade to froyo with samsungs exe.
they will reset it and it shouldn't be able to get pass the samsung boot then delete everything off of your sd card.
take it into your local sprint store they will fix it for free but remember tell them you were upgrading to froyo with SAMSUNG's Software not odin.

What u can try to do is uninstall odin and re install it that might help u. Also make sure u put the tar file under PDA section and retry. Hope that works for u. I would say flash back to di18 first then see if u can get th ota

Try flashing with this:

Use the second link: Stock EB13 Deodexed EXT4 + CW 3.0.0.6
edit: piggy-backing on iSaint's post, yes click re-partition for this flash. When I flashed, I actually had all 3 checked (repartition, reset time and auto reboot).

Hello all,
This is my first post to XDA and I'm having some serious issues. I have searched eveywhere to try and find an answer but with no luck. I was trying to install chris41 odin efo2plus rom/kernel, and odin froze at modem.bin. I didn't know what to do. I unplugged the usb cable, pulled the battery and tried again. However, this time it froze at factory.fs being installed. I am using the new ODIN (1.82). I have tried running as admin, running in xp sp2 compatibility mode with admin, I've changed USB ports, and even changed USB cables, although I've never had a problem with ODIN and the Palm Pre cable that I've been using. I'm stuck. My phone won't boot, and I can't get it to ODIN anything. Even tried to ODIN DI18 stock, and still freezes at factory.fs. I was on Bonsai with EXT4, and chris41's rom is RFS. Don't know if that has anything to do with it? I am completely confused. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Just keep trying bro... if it worked before it'll work again Odin is just fussy...

Try running it without the battery in the phone. Open Odin plug phone in without battery and then go into download mode. Put your files in appropriate place and run Odin with only auto reboot checked. I have three epics and one of them will actually not work at all in Odin unless I have the battery out. Worth a try.

Ok, well, lets start at where the files are supposed to go. Every rom I've ODIN'd before, I just put the tar in the phone section. Never put a pit or anything else with it. Is this correct? Second, usually when I ODIN a rom, it comes up with a little progress bar on the phone showing how far along the process is. I've tried now about 20 times after the first ODIN, and I haven't gotten a progress bar yet. Should I be worried about that?

After following qbking's video and putting the tar in pda instead of phone, and putting the pit in, it now fails even earlier in the process. The status bar comes up on my phone, but as soon as it goes to write cache.fs, it fails. ODIN either comes up and says FAIL in the red box, or ODIN completely crashes. And, same thing as before, I've tried diff USB, rebooted computer, in xp mode, with admin, without admin. I'm starting to think my phone is a brick.

HAHA it says dont use it in video in annotations i mean come on already as well as in noobs thread its for debugging purposes and will eat your battery alive.
Please read things this is why people have issues and wonder why and then complain its so simple to read by using your eyes
Not being angry but just trying to point out that, this is why noobs either brick or get terrible results.
I got it. I don't know why, but for some reason I had to have Re-Partition, Auto-Reboot, and F. Reset Time all checked, as opposed to only Auto-Reboot. I'm now on EC05. Thanks all for your input. I really do appreciate it.
it may be your usb cable. Are you using the factory samsung cable? if so that was the reason why most of my odin's were failing. Try a generic usb cable from monoprice or something and it may help you the same way it helped me!

I realize this thread is long dead but i found it using google looking for a solution to this exact issue, so i will add some input from my own personal experience.
Make sure you are using a fully charged battery. Also if you have multiple batteries try swapping between them. I have 2 counterfeit and one authentic battery, using the counterfeits causes problems in odin for me.
Also you may need to repartition if you are coming from a newer rom that is not BML
[Guide]Oops, I flash something in Odin on "Phone" instead of "PDA"[ACS]EG30 AVAILABLE
DISCLAIMER
This is a guide for people who want to fix a mistake they made and NOT for people who want to experiment with their modems. Therefore, I am not responsible for any damage you do to your phone using this guide or these files.
Hello ladies and gents, AbsolutZeroGI here.
So, you've flashed something in Odin on "Phone" instead of "PDA". It happens to everyone. By that I mean I've done it enough times to cover everyone who didn't.
Thankfully it's an easy fix.
Before we begin, I'd like to thank Hacre for obtaining and uploading the stock modem.bin file. Also, thanks to the guy who pulled it to begin with (when I can remember his name, it will go here). I've tested this method personally (on purpose AND by accident), and I know that it works.
First, what happens when you flash something over "Phone" when you shouldn't? Well, it attempts to replace the modem.bin file with whatever it was you were trying to flash. If you unplug the phone and pull the battery, your phone will actually reboot. The worst consequence of this action is that your data will be DEAD. No signal, no data, no wifi. This is not nearly as big of a deal as it sounds. So take a deep breathe and ask yourself: what is the solution?
The solution is, of course, to flash the modem.bin file back to where it belongs. Here we go!
Okay, if you've flashed something on "Phone" instead of "PDA", you'll notice that Odin never finishes out and the phone never automatically reboots (like it usually does when you flash on Odin). This is normal and nothing to be alarmed about.
First thing is first, you need a modem.bin file. You can find one here: ACS Forums
**update** I now have ALL modems over at the ACS Forums (EG12, EG30, EG31 and EK02). So you can pick and choose which one you want
Next, pull the battery and unplug your phone (if you haven't done so already).
Then, you're going to put your battery back in and hit vol-down + power to get back into Download (Odin) Mode. Press up for yes when it prompts you.
Now open up Odin and plug your phone back in. It should connect just as it always does and be prepared to flash. If you don't know what I mean by that, check out the tutorial on using Odin here: Odin Tutorial
Finally, you're going to click where it says "Phone", navigate to the modem.bin file you downloaded and select it. Make sure nothing besides reboot (it may be called auto-reboot) is checked in the boxes on the left hand side. No seriously, double check again please.
Hit start to flash it. Your phone will flash and reboot and be all fixed and you can continue with what you were doing.
Remember, we all do stupid things. That's why we have Guides to fix them
Hit the thanks button if I helped ya!
**Update**
We now have access to all 4 modems. Click the link above to go the ACS forums, then click on the link there to get the downloads.
Updated. Now there's download links for EG12 and EG30 over in the ACS thread for those who want a specific one
Enjoy!

I've heard it has (I've been busy with exams and first week of the new quarter in college), but I haven't seen it. Some people claim one gets better signal and less LOS, others claim the other does. Some claim there is no difference and there's a placebo effect.
But I thought as long as there's more than 1 I'd post it so people could choose. I only had eg12 before so now people have the full choice.
From what I've read the EG12 modem has been known to cause the phone not ringing when sleeping. I would go with EG30.
I just noticed that there is a size difference in the bin files. The eg30 you linked is 1.25Mb. The eg12 is 16Mb. A few posts down someone linked another eg30 that is 16Mb. Are they supposed to be around 16?

LISTEN UP LADIES AND GENTS. I realize that both are the same modem. That's a my bad. I spent 4 hours last night testing modem pulls and people either didn't do it right or had an eg12 baseband.
That being said, keep in mind that this is a guide for people to restore service to their phones if they've flashed something over phone instead of pda. this is not a guide for people to be fiddling with their modems (which you shouldn't be doing anyway) to see "which one is better". I will try to find one, but I don't consider it "imperative". The guide restores service, as promised.
Hey guys, I know there are maybe a couple of threads on this but didn't know what exactly to search, but every since I rooted my phone.. My baseband is EG12, but i dont recall flashing my modem.. I'm completely sure I didnt

I read on another forum that there is a radio EG30 that supposedly fixes this issue.. I also don't recall experiencing this before root, but i know most of us flashed from a .tar to gain root.. So is it safe to say that them tars have flashed our modem to... Or maybe alter something that render these problems
I didn't think it was possible to flash your modem, unless you check the MODEM box in Odin, click the MODEM button and flash a file to it. This should not have happened to you if you used the PDA box like you should have to root your phone.
So you either goofed using Odin or somehow there's a way to flash your modem while flashing a rooted kernel. What exact steps did you take and what kernel did you use to root your phone?
I follow the exact steps found in qbking77 video to rooting.. Which yu can see here

Then sorry man I'm at a loss. If you flashed that TAR under PDA in Odin, then it should not have touched your baseband. Unless there's something in that TAR that flashes the modem. I didn't think that was possible though.
Well anyhoo .. update your Profile and PRL and see if it keeps happening. Doing this could fix the no calls/texts issue for you. Good luck!

I have/had the same problem, what I did I restored my entire system using a tar file that unrooted and flashed everything back how I initially got the phone. I pretty much started from scratch again and rooted again and did my thing. I still haave baseband eg12 but i was able to update profile and my prl. As of 10 hours of doing so i have not had the same problem YET. I would give it a shot, just might help.

Yeah that data collection you're doing is great mjcollum. Still doesn't explain how this guy ended up with EG12 though.
don't know about flashing from a .tar but one of the older kernels
i want to say it was one of the zedomax ones but don't hold me to that. would flash eg12 if installed from a zip in cwm. i'll take a peek and see what i can see.
you could try extracting the tar you used to flash to get root and seing if there is a modem.bin in it though.
the only modem.bin available is the eg12 one so if there is one thats where it came from.
I tried that bro.. No luck at all.. Is there like a stock tar that I can flash that could fix this?
currently there is no way to get eg30 back.
however there are some things you can do to help the situation.
check out the thread i posted a few minutes ago ...
the biggest things i have found to make a difference are
make sure your not underclocked.
try a few different kernels.
failing that i've seen some success depending on rom/kernel combo it doesn't seem to be any one kernel that works for everyone with this problem.
i'm currently running starburst 1.8 with the exp kernel that comes with it and as long as i don't underclock the min cpu it's fine.
some of my tests show the stock eg-30 filesystem and kernel seem to work well also.
some would say it's not an eg12 modem issue but then again i have only one report of it happening on eg30 and even then it didnt happen every time.
the stock kernel is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1273647 you may try that first
and a completely stock filesystem with kernel is here

erp one more thing remember to update prl and profile then reboot after flashing. seems to make a large difference

Thanks man, ima try this right now..much is def appreciate for yall assistance..
It is most unusual that the stock EG30 modem isn't available to flash which is why so many people are trying everything possible to get it

yea they seem to go out of their way specifically to prevent you from pulling modem drivers for some reason. seems to only be an issue with cdma devices.
