Flashing new kernel? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do I need to flash back to stock kernel (evo 4g) before flashing a new one?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

No. Just make a backup, wipe your cache and dalvik, then flash kernel from recovery. Give it like 2-3 before you pass judgement on it.

Thank you!

Exactly. Just like he said too, it might take a few minutes after you wipe what's listed above to boot up. If after 5 to 10 minutes its still not working then flash another kernel. Not all evos are the same too, so what works for someone might not work for yours.

Personally, I always flash the kernel after the rom, so its done in 2 recovery sessions. Seems to alleviate the potential problems.

Same here, it lets everything get settled in a bit before swapping the kernel. Although I think he's not changing roms at this time but who knows.

Ah true, but still good advice to have on deck.

I have always flashed the kernel with the rom too, (after the rom) I am just going with a different kernel and wasn't quite sure if I needed to clean (wipe) everything. Thanks for the help

[Q] Problems flashing Sense ROMs

Hello all,
So I am an avid ROM flasher (I try at least 2 a week), and recently when I try to install Sense 3.0 or 3.5 ROMs I have an issue; The ROM flashes and boots up all nice and good, but the startup application that runs by default on a fresh install doesn't show up. All I get is the wallpaper and the notification bar w/ clock, battery etc. but thats it, I can't get passed this to any other screen . After all that the only way I can get back to recovery to flash a working ROM is through a battery pull.
Like I always do with new ROMs, I
nandroid
factory wipe/reset
wipe cache a few times
wipe dalvik cache a couple times
flash GruesomesWipeAll.zip
then flash ROM
The wierd part is that I can flash Stock Barebones just fine along with any other ICS ROM with no issues.
So I guess what im getting at is, is there im doing something wrong i.e. flashing or wiping?
PS. my SD is partitioned
PSS. the ROMs that arent working for me are
The Express
EnergyROM
And one other that I forgot

Try a reflash of recovery see if that helps. Also wipe everything except sdcard and battery stats 2 times then flash the rom to see if its still happening

Great news indeed! I am a complete noob when it comes to flashing kernels, or anything for that matter. I have successfully flashed this kernel on the Tmobilestock ROM. Now things do seem to be a alot smoother, not sure if it is a placebo, but what are some things that I should do to ensure I take advantage of the new kernel?
What system settings should I be aware of, or make changes to ensure maximum performance?
Is this ROM overclocked to 1.75ghz by default? Right now benchmarks are telling me its clocked at 1.566ghz.
Any tips or tricks are appreciated, thanks! :victory::laugh::victory:

Thanks for the suggestion on CPU Tuner, I will give that app a swirl.
One really weird thing that I have noticed since flashing the kernel on Tmobile stock, is that calls are not working. I cannot hear anything, trying to toggle the speaker results in severe lag that hangs for a few seconds to a minute. Any ideas? I would post directly in the development thread, but I have not met the post count to do so. If someone can move this there, then by all means.
Thanks for any help.

When you upgraded to ics did you do a full wipe? And did you wipe partition and dalvik cache before you installed the kernel?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I did a factory reset and data wipe after having successfully upgraded to ICS. When I flashed to the Dark Side Venom kernel earlier, I wiped Dalvik cache but not the partition.
Streamline #6 on AOKP .40. Nice and smooth thus far.

I do have a backup created using ROM manager. I may give the re-flashing route a try. It seems like another member jbreeze228 in the development thread that is experiencing the exact issue, but it doesn't look his post have been addressed yet. So I'll stay tuned with that.

Looks like there is a Super Wipe, and a Cache Wipe. Which of the two should I use?
1. Place on ROOT of your SD card.
2. Boot into Recovery Mode
3. Do a NAND BACKUP!!!
4. Flash DARKSIDE.SUPER.WIPE
5. Stay inside recovery
6. Flash desired ROM.
7. After flashing is complete, Reboot...
8. Done!
So lemme see if I understand the instructions correctly. I should restore to my original backup. Boot into recovery and flash the wipe file. Then while still in recovery, I should flash the kernel? Am I understanding the steps correctly?

(Req)JB backup anyone? for those that can't boot JB

Some of us Inc2 owners r having issues with JB booting and/or extreme lag(cpu maxed out).
this is asking alot. could someone post up a BACKUP from twrp(preferred) or cwm recovery of a recent cm10 from aero of dkstunna? Preferable - a clean flash with gapps and have it boot, but not setup up gmail stuff. don't want your personal stuff. then do a backup and post it up if possible. I know this time consuming and a lot to ask for but there will b many thanks and might solve our problems.

I never have that issue even with dirty flash. Have you tried to wipe system, data, everything? I think you can try to Odin back to stock, then root it and start everything fresh. Sometimes the old files are still left over and mess up your phone.

The sad thing is, that's all I've been doing. Using Odin and keep going back to stock, update to ICS with Kies, and then hope to try and run another version of the ROM, and still no luck. It's quite frustrating. And yeah, I wiped system, data, everything. Did a full on wipe.

DO NOT do that if you are on the latest TWRP or CWM 6.+ cause Darkside super wipe was discontinued. For AOKP and CM 10.1 Nightly I just did a data/partition wipe and flash gapps.

[Q] AxisM ROM Question {Solved}

Have any one of you tried the AxisM ROM, it was previously called GalaxyMOD I believe. I usually don't flash Universal ROMs, the only one I tried before this was Hyperdrive which I kinda liked but wanted to wait until the bugs are ironed out but I did give this ROM a try because I saw one of our dev (the awesome grue) on the team members list (team synergy).
The issue is the ROM doesn't boot at all, it's not stuck at samsung logo or anything, I see the samsung logo and it goes blank, nothing happens. Please let me know if any of you guys got it to work. Would be awesome if Grue can make it work for us since he is on their team as well.
Here is the link to the ROM.

Downloaded KT747 and now back to flashing again. I have a slimbean backedup anyway. Will report back if I get it working.
On a sidenote, if I do get it booting but like the other user said have FC's, what other good kernels for TW do we have as alternatives? Agat & Lean Kernel 2.9?
I guess I could try freeza's optimized stock kernel as well.
EDIT: Ok, Flashed AxisM zip, Selected Sprint option and the dev picks option for apps, unchecked reboot option, flashed KT747 latest (4-11 I think) and it booted fine. No FC's until now. It's not an at&t only ROM. It's a universal ROM, like Hyperdrive that you can see on our forums. And I've been running it since yesterday morning and it's running pretty well. There is an another one called Synergy ROM, so 3 roms AFAIK that you can flash on any carrier S3.
