Nightlies are in constant development, so they are updated "nightly" and have the latest features and can also have some bugs. RCs are considered to be stable enough for everyday use, imo the nightlies are also as I've been using them almost since the launch of CM7 and haven't got any overwhelming problems. The stable ones are, well stable ones But the stable ones are CM6 and based on android 2.2 so they are "old" in that sense.
I would encourage you to try the CM7 RC2 or even the latest nightly as they really are great and you won't actually notice that it still is a work in progress

Stable - The latest stable release, the current 6.1.3 is froyo based and should be useable as a daily rom with no major bugs and very few minor bugs.
Release Candidate RC - This is a proposed release candidate (current one is Gingerbread based) for the next stable release, it should be stable enough to use as a daily rom (indeed I have had no problems running it), there may be a few major bugs and more minor bugs than you would find in the stable release.
Nightly - these are releases based on the latest release ( can be either based on stable or RC, currently based on RC2 ), aimed at adding new features, which may or may not work, or providing bug fixes to features already present (which again may or may not work).
Currently RC 2 is feature locked, therefore the nightlies are aimed at bugfixing or polishing features already present in preparation for the next stable release, As such the nightlies should improve upon the current RC, although it's not unknown for bugfixes to break functionality in a major way.

I can highly recommend CM7 RC2 with the Battery drain fix (#5) by mad-murdock.
I've been running it for the last 2 days, after coming from Android Revolution 3. It's fast, stable, and very light-weight.
Camera and video recorders work, however they're not quite as polished as the HTC versions.
Before the Battery drain fix, the battery life was terrible, however now it's better than Android Revolution.
Currently have 62% battery remaining, 13 hours after removing it from the charger.

OOO. Alright. THank you!

The thread with information and a link to #5 patch is here. I've been running that for several days and it's great even with the latest nightly build. There are a couple of caveats so reading the thread will help.

Any noticeable differences between RC2 and the latest nightly?
The only bug I've noticed with RC2 so far is the occasional freezing in landscape mode after finishing a call. Easily resolved by locking and unlocking the rotation though, so hasn't been an issue.

I haven't noticed any new issues that aren't already in RC2. And with Mad's #5 battery patch idle power consumption is about 1% per hour, but you can use that on RC2 too.

CM6 RC is more stable as compared to a CM6 nightly which is experimental and unsupported.

Copy from CyanogenMod wiki
CyanogenMod comes in two types: Stable or Experimental.
* Stable versions are those where all known issues have been addressed and resolved.
* Experimental versions are those where new features are being added, modified, and tweaked, and there are known bugs that are being worked on; these minor versions that end with -test or -RC in the name are experimental in nature but less beta and more release candidate.
* Nightly builds are daily compiled builds from the source, therefore have the latest features & tweaks, but will are mostly likely to break due being fresh, not fully tested code.
Thanks so much, that cleared a lot of misconceptions I had.
On the day the RC is released, there is no difference in that and the corresponding day's nightly. The next day, the nightly gets updated with the newest code changes and the RC remains the same. Rinse and repeat until they decide the codebase is stable enough to warrant another RC or a final cut.

There are three flavors.
Stable, Release Candidate and Nightlie. Consider the nightlies beta releases; they aren't quite RCs, are most likely buggy and they're released so that folks can help the CM team find some glaring bugs before the RC is released.

The CyanogenMod team are constantly adding new features, testing new tweaks, and trying to fix bugs. They have set up "Build-Bots" which automatically build a new version of a the phone's ROM every night, using the latest "commits". Sometimes, there have been no changes "committed" to the build, so two nightlies can be exactly the same, because the Built-Bot keeps going.
Once they get to a place where the nightlies seem pretty stable, they will announce that the next one is a "Release Candidate" (RC). Many more people will install the RC version, because these tend to be more stable than the experimental "nightly" versions. There can still be bugs to work through, and the devs keep working, and the Build-Bot keeps churning out new nightlies.
After a couple of RC versions, and after the dev teams are comfortable that the bugs have been worked out, they will announce that the next build is the "Stable" version, which should be good for everyone. (Very rarely odd bugs will still creep in, but the CM team is quick to jump on them, and .1 releases will take care of those nasty bugs.)
They still keep working, tweaking and adding features, however. They probably won't stop tweaking CM7 until the Source Code for Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is released, at which point everyone will shift to CM9. (CM8 was going to be the "Honeycomb" version of Android, but that was only ever released on Tablets, so they're moving straight to Version 9.)
And there's my submission for NaMoWriMo.

[Q] Best HTC Desire Z ICS ROM

Which is the best ICS ROM for HTC Desire Z?
Which have you tried and which one works better for you?
Why do you prefer that one instead the others?
I'm looking for a stable and fluid ROM, the one with less issues, I don't care about appearance and graphic effects.
I found these interesting:
Virtuous Quattro RC3
CyanogenMod 9.0.0-RC0 BETA 10
Andromadus Audacity Beta 4
At the moment I'm for Andromadus but I'd like to have your feedback guys.
andromadus for the win, even the test builds aren't that crappy... i just flashed it, but i have an issue where any music app lags, so i'm reflashing another rom
I had tried Andromadus Audacity Beta 4, everything is working including camera. Very fast. Very rare lagging and font glitch than beta 3. Now I'm using it as daily ROM.

This is not a little problem, do you had it with Andromadus Audacity Beta 4 on HTC Desire Z or with an other ROM/device?
I have tried all 3 of these ROMS. No one seems to be working as hard as the Andromadus team. It may say beta, but this ROM is exceptionally stable for where it is in the development process.
I'm voting other: The one you find works best for you.
I posted in the other thread I found Andromodus had some small bugs like the clock freezing in sleep and the trackball backlight lighting up at weird times so I voted Cyanogen 9....have been finding it slightly cumbersome of late though, not sure whether to switch back again....I swear it was faster when I had beta 5!

May i ask you why?
CM 9 beta 10 this is best.(maybe)
In my opinion is the best for me aokp. Most stable, everything works and fast @ 1.2 ghz. Battery is good also

Andromadus Audacity Beta 4 + v6 supercharger
I've been using andromadous since alpha, and in the current beta I find it works pretty well.
I'm using it daily and don't have any problems, except for sometimes there is a text corruption (letters whicn cannot be read, but with the icons I can operate the phone well).
I've been using the Virtuous Quattro RC3 build for a few weeks now on my T-mo G2. I was getting the screen artifacts that have plagued all of the ICS ROMs for this device but I chalked it up to the Trebuchet launcher, so I installed the Flex launcher instead with the same results.
Performance is better than my Cyanogen 7.1 (Gingerbread) build on the same device - particularly in terms of battery life and homescreen response time. Actual app performance has suffered a bit. That could be because I reduced the default clock speed to 1Ghz. For example, Angry Birds Space takes about a 40 seconds to load, then there is a good 20-30 second lag between when a level draws on the screen and when the app will start reacting to input.
I'm going to backup my install and try the Audacity ROM this weekend, then give that a couple of weeks as well. My T-Mo contract ends in September, so I'll keep playing with ROMs until then, then find a replacement phone with ICS native.

I'm currently thinking about flashing the Andromadus ROM, if you tried it can you tell me why do you think CM9B10 is better?

They're based on literally the same code. The only difference is Andromadus has a few more fixes/tweaks/features to fill in the gaps that the lack of official support from CyanogenMod leaves. The CM9 "Beta" rom does too, but they're kanged from Andromadus.
Also the kernel that both ROMs use is Fyodor's kernel (Andromadus dev).

Thanks for the explanation
Honestly, Cyanogenmod Beta 10 is probably the smoothest ics rom out there right now. Ive tried em all, and believe me, there's nothing better right now. For some reason the beta's after it (11 and 12) are alot choppier and slower overall, so don't bother with those for now.
Andromadous is the most popular because it was the first, but CM9 Beta 10 is the best. you'll be suprised how good it runs once you try it. Okay, now i'm done. i'm starting to sound like a living bill board.
I would say Andromadus is probably the best, but if you want some theming too, QuadraSense it as smooth if not smoother than andromadus

[Q] Need a recommandation for a fast and stable ROM

Hello.
I'm looking for a fast, stable and batterysaving everyday ROM for my Defy+ (red lens) phone.
This is NOT a 'best rom' question, I just want some input to find a ROM among all these GREAT options which is best suited for my needs. As there are loads of ROMs and versions, I'm hoping somebody else have been in my position and have a ROM to recommend!
I have tried Mokee, which was very fast, but a little buggy (dialer FC-ed when 3g) and not very well supported (yet) on Defy+.
Before that I ran the newest Quarx CM10 4.1.2 nightlies, but most of them have some irritating bugs (Wifi ch 11 not working, ringtone bug etc), and I don't want the hassle of having to upgrade the phone every week.
CM9, CM10, I really don't care as long as it is fast and stable.
Before that I ran the Pikachu-rom from TweetyPeety. It looked very nice, but developement is not continued and besides the not-so-great speed there were some bugs unfortunately.
Today I tried the newest CM9 (12-11-18) from Epsilon, but the batterydrain was bad compared to Mokee.
Thanks!

If you want a STABLE rom for DEFY than only back to stock GB and MS2G or CM7.
I have also tried many of the CM10 but if Reability, Speed and Battery is TOP agenda than only GB for now.

[Q] AOSP 4.2 with highest performance

I'm using CodefireX AOSP but the latest stable release is from march and not that stable. Currently I have the SR12 release which is fine but sometimes slow and occasionally I get random reboots.
So I'm wondering is there any really smooth Jellybean ROM for the DHD? Without any flaws like apps not working, some features broken etc. I don't need any fancy add-ons, main priority is stable and fast. I was even thinking about going back to ARHD but I got used to the new GMail and other 4.x features so I'd rather stick with JB or ICS.
Or maybe the DHD is just to old for really smooth JB operation?
I know this question gets asked from time to time but with all the development that's still going on I think old threads are not that useful.

I would recommend CM10.1 RC1 works well and no FC or random reboots, I might try RC5 soon. I was using PipelinerArd last AOKP build before espmartin took the helm and that is also a great 4.2 ROM. If you can kill google maps with greenify and keep apps to a minimum that wake the phone in sleep then battery life can be 36hrs plus with average to good use. Games will still kill the battery because the screen sucks a lot of juice.
I recommand you also the Mustaavalkosta CyanogenMod 10.1 RC5 is the most stable and powerfull ROM form DHD in 4.2.2.
