So they are showing the instant On , on the new desire z in london which is basically is same as tmobile g2 here in states.
i was wondering is it something to do with SSD beign used or are they using some kind of hibernation technics in which phone is not entirely turn off instead goes into hibernation and then come back up.
and if its gona be possible to use in other android phones.
Realistically speaking, all phones use "SSD". SSD stands for Solid State Drive, and I doubt there's many phones out there that actually use a standard hard disk as storage.
All data is stored on flash chips, but technology in that area, whilst great at shrinking and increasing capacity, doesn't really improve super fast in terms of data transfer speeds.
I suspect they are doing some kind of clever hibernation as already suggested. Like it loads up a CPU state from memory that is stored when the system is shut down. I imagine first time out of the box will still be a good minute or so as usual, but successive reboots will be a lot quicker.
I imagine there will also be some sort of button combination you can press on boot to do a "fresh" boot rather than loading the hibernated version (for the usual reason that people reboot - to flush memory etc).
but the question is will the g2 get it? maybe instant on is just something built into sense. keeping my fingers crossed
Hopefully its available for the US version. Would be a neat lil way to conserve battery power. Devs will find a way to port it.

I expect the G2 will get it as well - Looks like more of a ROM/SPL feature than Sense. Incidentally, I saw another video yesterday which showed a much more usual boot time. In the region of 40 seconds or so.
My theory seems to stand up to this. It's possible that this was the first time that the particular handset had been booted.
I'm not sure where the battery savings would come in. Aside from the few seconds shaved off when booting I can't see much other saving. In fact, it may transpire that the "system image" that it stores is held in battery-backup storage, which may in fact drain battery more, not less.

The same way sleep mode saves electricity on desktops.
it would save battery in that you would be more likely to shut down completely when not using it if it booted up that fast. right now I rarely shut my phone down because if i need it in a pinch, I'd have to wait forever for it to boot.
edit: @dazultra2000, that's assuming it's a real shutdown rather than a hibernation as you suggest. you're right though, it's more likely to be more of a hibernation type thing. but still, if it used more battery than it saved, then what really would be the point? there would be no advantage over just turning the screen off
It would have to be a hibernate/sleep thing. It would be great. To me, it would not be useful if it doesn't notify you of a message or call right on the spot as if the phone was on. I keep mine on. It's the point of having a cell phone.
I presume it's just like a computer and only the service stays awake for these such things.
I hope so.
could be helpful though mostly i just stick my phone in airplane mode instead of turning it off.
well, in this video the guy clearly selects 'shut down.' I mean i'm still not convinced it's completely shutting down, but it sure looks like it

It could either be great programming by HTC
or native hibernation support from qualcomm on the new chipset.

+1 on that.
seems like gpu is doing such a wonderful job of helping CPU in that matter.
He said in the video the phone will boot the "normal" amount of time if you pull the battery.
The quick boot is if you power on/power off normally.

in that case its probably more of a standby where it loads the os into the ram. that would explain why it would boot slower after you pop the battery. however don't think most people swap batteries on a daily basis.

it MUST have decent battery life. hopefully at 18 hours given the proccesor is underclocked. though the second you stick cmod on it, batt life is probably going to drop significantly.

So I got the phone last Wed and have tried LoSTKernal, and with that I would get LOS all the time and it would reboot after sometimes. Also Wifi and 4g would sit at obtaining ip address forever and sometimes not connect. I then put 2.6.357_ZedomaxEpicTouchStockv1 on. Now everything works great except I constantly get LOS and also the battery sucks. I'm sitting at 67 percent right now and it was at 100 four hours and 13mins ago, and 70% of use is just cell standby and 12% was android os. I haven't really used it at all during that time.
Any suggestions? I am thinking of going back to totally stock to see how things function, since I didn't spend much time on that and see how it works then. I love the phone but won't be able to keep it if I can't at least get as good of battery life as my EVO had and also the LOS all the time.
When its sitting on LOS and idle, does that take up battery? Is that a possible cause of the terrible battery life?
Also random question about CMR, when I was first using it the power button worked as the select, but not it doesn't, and I have found the home button works to confirm a select, is this normal? UPDATE I just did a backup and power button was working again, and text was orange (was blue before), I think its a different version when I flashed Zedomax.

yes, if you are stuck at LoS for a while, it will drain your battery as the phone constantly searches for service. If you feel motivated and inclined you'd use one of the custom roms available at the dev forums. It makes a world of difference, especially since most of them remove the bloat.
I'm currently on Midnight Rom 2.2 with LoStKernel 1.0.2.4. Been on battery for 9+ hours, with 1 hour of screen on time. Full sync enabled. I typically get about 4.5 hours of on screen time playing a game/browsing.
Phone is great, just needs to be customized a bit.
oh .. you also need to calibrate your battery also after switching kernels. and if you feel inclined, you can use viper's LoS reboot script, works fairly well.
Also, this is in the wrong forum. Should be in General or Q & A.
Be ready to get flamed and called all kind of things ... why? For posting in the wrong section ... oh well.

I've tried all the roms here and two of them I can get 20+ hours with moderate use. Lost kernels help a lot, but the Rom by strong Steve I think his name is, the odexed Rom, is the only Rom I haven't had a los on. Coincidentally its the Rom I went 25 hours of battery with. Give it a try.

Thanks, I'm downloading the steve odexed now and then I guess I'll look into calibrating the battery. Sorry about posting in the wrong forum.
I'm flashing steve's rom now. For the battery calibration script, do you mean run this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309034
Will that work with any rom? I'm not having much luck searching and finding what I should install for a 'battery calibration script'.
Try chriss almost stock kernel. Should clear that los right up. Also, make sure to post questions in qna from now on. Xda reserves this forum for development related threads only.

Just wanted to say that on the newest cwm, once you boot into recovery, start pressing the volume down button like ten or twenty times and you'll see it say something like back button enabled or something like that. Then you'll be able to use the power button like you were able to on all previous versions. Hope that makes sense.

here is how i do my batt calibration. i charge to 100 percent, flash the rom, make sure all is well, then plug the phone back into the charger until it hits 100 again. when its at 100 i reboot into recovery, and wipe battery stats 3 times, then reboot and download and enable juice defender. i then use it normally until it reaches 0% on the battery and shuts off. plug it into the charger and turn it back on until 100% and thats it. I have screen shots of 20+ hours every time (depending on the rom of course) . ive never downloaded any kind of batt script.

I haven't had a single LOS on strongsteve's ROM either. Actually, not a single problem whatsoever. I did choose to put back pulled stock kernel on this ROM though. Either way, you will be happy. Performance is identical to stock with the 3600 to 4000 Quadrants etc and great battery

Interesting.
I flashed Steve's Rom and its been working great! Wifi, 4g, and no LOS since I've loaded it, which is over 24 hours ago now. Also been using the phone with light to moderate use today and its been on battery 7 hours 20 mins now and only at 75% so battery life is looking good. Thanks for the help! I may try that battery process mentioned by twoeleven99 if I find the battery life to not be that great, but so far if it looks good I'll just stick with what I've got.
All,
I'm currently on the Crossbreed Rom with Franco Kernel. Overall, its a great set up and smooth, until say a week of regular using my phone, I can see it would slow down/lag from switching apps, typing, scrolling and the problem won't fix itself until I reboot. I'm looking at the battery logs and don't see anything unusual, the Android OS is always top then the screen. And again, after a reboot, thing is great until another week or 2 then reboot again. I don't believe I need to reboot all the time.
Any pointers? Could it be an app that is slowing it down?
Thanks for any info!
Well, I usually reboot my phone every now and then. Maybe thats all it takes?

You should reboot your phone every week, no big deal.
Try clearing the Dalvik and any very large text message threads.
Shouldn't be happening. Doesn't happen to me on stock.

Shouldn't at all be necessary, and is not a requirement of owning this (or any) phone.

This is a problem with your current setup, as it is not an issue on stock. You need to do some investigation.
I'm not sure if my opinion is going to matter here - but I thought it was good practise to fully drain your devices battery once in a 14 day period - just to keep the calibration fresh.
In saying that - I doubt that this timeline is normal - I saw a comment in another thread that made sense, you have a Windows box, leave it on 24/7 (most of the time in stand-by) but you'll notice it getting slower and slower and the cache builds up and RAM gets chewed and you resolve it by rebooting the machine. It is VERY easy to see that from about 2010, mobile devices ARE pocket sized computers.
It makes sense that you'd have to power cycle every now and then.

This is proven to not be effective, and constantly draining your battery to flat-out 0% can actually damage it.

Not at all necessary on these devices. The windows analogy doesn't really come into play here. I can counter that by pointing to about every single Mac owner (myself included) that will go months on end without shutting down or rebooting the computer with absolutely 0 ill effects.
And if you do "need" to reboot, it should not be as frequent as every two weeks. Especially on a mobile device. Sure, it may be good practice, but should not have to be done out of necessity to keep properly using the phone.
I usually go 3 weeks PR so without rebooting. Around 700 hours of up time or more, and never have slow down issues.
Every option I have available has already been answered here. What I noticed was that when I have very FEW apps installed, the battery stays on for longer and my ICS doesn't slow down at all. I'm running GummyNex with Franco kernel milestone 2. I'm running facebook etc in my browser instead of using the app. I'm using as few apps as possible just to keep it clean.

Over the past couple weeks my sons phone started to have a couple issues. These are the first issues we've experienced since we got the phone when it was first released. The first two problems were that it started dying real fast and I mean in a couple hours with zero usage. Before the problem started we were getting 15-20 hours with moderate usage. The second issue was that at any point in time it would shut down and it would take a charger to be plugged in to restart it (even though it wasn't dying).
When this started it was completely stock. Since then here are the steps I've taken...
1) checked battery stats, Android OS was always on top at around 70%. No rogue apps
2) loaded CPU Spy, the phone seemed to be sleeping normally
3) remove sd card
4) shut off wifi
5) factory reset (didn't stop the issues)
6) went into the stock recovery and wiped data and cache (I've since heard this may cause an issue in the stock build)
7) loaded a custom recovery (Agat)
8) loaded CM10 (this seems to have fixed the problem with it dying quickly)
And it just shut off out of no where. Is there something else I can try?

I'm going to head out and pick up a new battery once the Sprint store open this morning. Then I'm planning on bringing it completely back to stock and hopefully that takes care of it.
My wife is threatening me that if we need to get him a new phone that she'll give him her iphone 4 and buy an iphone 5 for herself. I need to make sure I get this phone back up and running properly so that doesn't happen. lol
I went to the Sprint store this morning and he didn't even have to test the battery to know it's defective. I guess batteries get swollen at a certain point and from that point on it will hold less and less of a charge and start shutting down spontaneously as it gets worse. Needless to say I have another Samsung battery on order and will be getting this back to as stock as I can.
Thanks for your help and the headslap!

Why does it take our phones so long to boot up? Compared to a desktop computer with a solid state hard drive its able to boot up in 5 to 6 seconds. Smartphones should be comparable
It really doesn't take that long.

and thats what phones have. so in theory our phones should be around 6-7 seconds.
