[Q] Installing a custom Rom - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So before I can flash I now understand I must replace my stock Kernel.
Any Suggestions which on to use?

There are 3 kernels right now,Twilight Zone, genocide,BakedSnack, your ROM of choice will come with one of them, and they are not all compatible with every ROM,read up.

can i use a netarchy kernel for sense 2.2 and replace htc default kernel?

if so, how do i go about doing that please?
Are you rooted? If you are, then grab one of nets kernels from the android development section and follow their instructions to flash the kernel.
If you're not rooted, it's impossible to install a custom kernel.

Flash Rom Without Kernel?

Being rather new to Samsung phones, a quick question regarding Roms:
I notice all Roms come packaged with a kernel. This is new to me. Is it necessary to have a kernel in the Rom .zip? Can I just remove the zimage and just flash the Rom without it?
.....
Not all ROMs come with a kernel. I'm on this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282415
Which is just a system without a kernel.
Do you use ROM manager? There's plenty stock without kernels

Yes u can remove the kernel before flashing. Some developers prefer o e kernel over another so they use that one. U can use whatever kernel u want.

Starburst ROM compatible with the Stock kernel W/clockwork mod?

I was wondering if I could flash starburst Rom and then flash the stock kernel w/clockwork instead of the Lostkernel (yes there is someone on the forums with recompiled stock kernel with clockwork), is starburst compatible with stock kernel? I am a little new to this, I have rooted EVO 4g and a Nexus s 4g but some of the issues with the Epic touch have kept me from trying out different roms and kernels. Thank you and sorry if this has been answered somewhere else, I could not find the answer.
Lol yes.......

Simple Little Questions thats bugging the **** out of me.

Do i have to have a rom to get a new kernel. Thats the first question the others will be after this one is answered. Thanks in Advance
It really depends if the kernel supports the phone and rom. Most kernels only work if the rom supports that kernel. Take cyanogenmod for example. If you were to flash cm that has stock 3.0 kernel, you can't use the 3.4 kernel or above unless the rom supports it. If you want a more recent kernel then you'd have to flash a rom that supports it.

You need to be rooted with custom recovery to flash a kernel. But, you can use the stock rooted rom. Does that answer?
Also, if you stick with stock rom, or any touchwiz rom, can only use touchwiz kernels. If you want aosp kernels, need to be on an aosp rom.

[Q] Which kernel to choose

Hi, I know this is a bit of a noob question, but I want to flash a new kernel, and I don't know which kernels are safe to flash. I'm running CM 10.1 Wild for the Night with CWM 6.0.3.3 . I have a EL29 modem and the current kernel is something like 3.0.64-CM-q31f128d. As to why I want to flash a new kernel it's because I have an audio problem (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2374061) and other people with the same problem, but the GT-I9100 version of the s2, have reported it fixed by flashing the dorimanx kernel. However, I can't flash that one because it's only for the GT-I9100 right? So my question is which kernel can I flash?
I believe the only current AOSP kernels are the standard CM one (and its derivatives) and the LightningZap kernel. The CM one is the standard one in most of the AOSP ROMS.

Yeah I believe the cyanogenmod one is what I currently have. Is it possible to flash the LightningZap kernel using Mobile Odin while keeping my current Cyanogenmod 10.1 setup? Thanks for the quick reply!
As long as there is a tar for it, yes. If they have a zip, you can flash from your current custom recovery. Either way nothing will change but kernel and recovery.
