[Q] A2SD D2WE D2EXT for RCMixHD - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there, please act like i'm a dummy when explaining things
I've bought an HTC Desire about a month ago and it took me 10 days to understand the process of rooting and flashing a custom rom.So i bumped to a thread on development, RCMixHD v3.4 and i really wanted to flash this ROM to my device, the problem is i don't know what A2SD, D2WE, D2EXT do and how to. So if you'd be kind to explain why i need those and how i can flash etc those things, I'd be more than glad (i'd jump and screen on my chair)
link to the ROM thred: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789830

Searching for A2SD, D2WE, and D2Ext will give you lots of hits that will explain in detail what they are and do. Basically they put apps and/or data on your SD card to allow you to install more apps. But if all you want to do is install the RCMix HD ROM just follow the instructions. See my post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11918633#post11918633 for a list of steps to check/follow to install.

i'll head over and read the instructions

i had the chance to buy a new class 4 SD card yesterday and did partitioning with mini tool partition home,i did all the things in the video in order and my pc(windows) didn't see the fat32 partition so i deleted all the partitions, created fat 32 first then ext3 later and i'm not sure if it worked at all because the ROM i installed was freezing from time to time when i do something that requires sd card usage.

Application Space

I have the HTC Desire on Telus.
I have Apps2SD installed, as well as Android 2.2. Currently I am unrooted but was rooted before and the same issue.
I can move some applications to the SD card, but not all of them. Also its only part of the application. I am still running out of space all the time.
Am I missing something, how do you install and run an application from the SD card?
Root. Youre using stock a2sd which doesnt fully move the app to the sd so it still uses storage space. Root and a2sd+ is what youre after
Sent from my HTC Desire
As I said in my post, I was Rooted before, still didn't install the full application and cache and everything to sd.
Well if you rooted but didn't partition your SD card for A2SD+, then you did nothing extra.
Root > partition SD card > reinstall ROM
Link to the instructions on how to do it exactly, make sure I do it correct this time around.
Thanks.
So I did that, you can only partition the SD card as 512MB, which is clearly the same as internal memory. Also, the applications still only move some of itself over to the sd card.......
I can't use Gparted for reasons, is there another program that does the same that works with windows?
Anyone....really......come on....
MiniTool Partition Wizard (google it) works under Windows and can create ext3 partition SD Cards. It's the only one i found that actually works, and it's free.
As an alternative, you can instal ROM Manager on your phone and use it to create ext3 partition, although it's limited to 512MB.
Thanks for that application.
So I formatted my SDcard, reinstalled the rom and I still have only 114MB free, and 2GB missing from my SDCard now...WTF
Yeah, but data will be stored on ext3 partition so you will be able to install more apps. I now have 200mb of apps, and still have 40% free in internal memory.
The new Adobe Flash update increases the already ludicrous amount of space this app takes up on your phone. Was 10.96MB, now 11.29MB.
No Froyo move to SD.
Can someone please give me instructions from start to finish on how to do this because clearly I'm doing it wrong, I have 114MB internal free with fresh install.
Just install applications, you'll see they now take way less space in phone memory. You won't see that partition as available space.

Would still be nice to have instructions for next time.
And so your telling me there is no point to making a 2GB extra partition, since you can't move the apps fully over, that's what I thought, and this was a waste of time.
Instructions can be found all over the xda forums...seriously its not that hard to find..u need a rooted phone, a ROM that supports A2SD and an ext2 or ext3 partition on ur sd-card.

Yea, these forums are bloated with topics and new posts every 5 seconds, its hard to find anything. And I found a tutorial or 2, obviously I did it wrong.
So a direct link, or a new step by step would be great. Everyone is acting like its easy, so shouldnt be hard to write a quick step by step or give a link..lol

Okay....what ROM are you using? Stock 2.2 only supports Google's way of moving Apps (i.e. moving some of it and leaving the rest behind). Even with rooting, the stock ROM WILL NOT move everything to SD. So you need a new ROM which will support the A2SD feature.....so selecting a new ROM (even a modified version of the stock one) would be your first step. Make sure this ROM has support for A2SD or A2SD+....
Edit: If you do decide to make the "full" switch, it is recommended to S-OFF if possible.... I am fairly confident that you are following the right steps but the ROM isn't supporting it.
I am currently running your ROM, the Oxygen v2.0-RC6 Gingerbread ROM. And i dont know what S-OFF is. I am assuming a way to power off.

Have you also got a custom recovery? like ClockworkMod (can be found on the Market) or AmonRa (i don't use this).... you will need one of them if you want to enable A2SD with Oxygen ROM. This is because the oxygen ROM, by default, writes app data into the internal memory rather than into any external partitions.
Basically once you create your ext3, you have to boot into the custom recovery and flash this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2263716/dalv...2SD-signed.zip
and reboot..and that should do the trick.
That's the general summary of the steps. Read the link for more details on partitioning:
Link on SD card partitioning: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910290
EDIT: Put simply, S-OFF (security off) allows you to install custom HBOOT image (such as the one I have..) which give you more space in you internal memory. Alpharev Oxygen HBOOT for example (HBOOT is the bootloader) gives around 337MB as internal space for your apps....which kinda makes EXT3 partitions unnecessary...
You have to be a bit careful with S-OFFing as newer Desire models have new security feature which makes it unsuitable to flash a new HBOOT. Read more about this here:

which rom - android 2.3 + sense 3

Hi
Does a rom exist which features gingerbread 2.3 and sense UI which doesn't require a custom hboot or a partitioned SD card. I.e. will run from a fully standard rooted htc desire?
If so what is it called, if not will someone briefly explain what the extra partition is required for?
thank you
Jim
dont know if there is one without need of an ext partition.
But its very usefull!
Why you need it?
Because, Dev's have moved files from the system to the partition on the sd.
In most cases you gain much more space for apps.
If you want to know more, search the wiki or forum for : a2sd, data2sd, data2ext, and so on.
its very easy to do, but safe all your data on the sd before!
only thing you need is a 500+ free space on your sd-card
if you have a linux, you only need to install gparted
else
start a linux-livecd of your choice(maybe Gparted-livecd)
Insert your Sd into a Cardreader
if you already use gparted, its easy, there will be an fat 32 partition
click resize and move the right slider so you gain about 500mb-1gb free space
now click into the gray area and click new
than partition as ext (would suggest ext-3 (best suported))
you should be done
now you can try roms wich need ext-partition
good luck
You can run roms with standard hboot but you need an ext partition purely because you will install about 3 apps and you will run out of space. That's why they make it mandatory to have.

Now that you know why you need EXT partition here is 1 of many tutorials how to do it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9580475&postcount=2
you need 1 Fat32 partition followed by 1 EXT4 partition (recommended by most developers 1GB if you want to use sense 3.0 goodies).
I have the same question: which ROM actually gives you gingerbread and sense 3.0 at the same time? There is no problem with partitioned SD-card.
So far I have found this post from Cool Kingdom, which seems (from comments) great:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1040121
havn't tried it yet, but just wondering if there is anything to choose from?
PS: is there a way to partition my SD card without card reader, just using the phone itself?
Thanks a lot

New versions of ClockworkMod Recovery can do it under Advanced/Partition SD.
You can install InsertCoin - it's a great gingerbread and sense 3.0 rom. I've been using it for over a month and it's great.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016940
About the ext partition - I think it's a must. You'll get plenty of space for apps...
Looking at the Cool Kingdom rom on youtube, it seems pretty laggy in comparison to the InsertCoin rom I have installed on my desire. InsertCoin seems to be more optimised I find, but you'll need to install the nightly version to have 3D widgets and the 3D homescreen.

[Q] nervous newbie with basic questions.

Hi all. Sorry for these basic questions. I only just now got round to rooting, s-off, partitioned my SD card and downloaded a new ROM (latest Leedroid)
I followed this excellent video tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Now very nervous about the final steps;
Are EXT partitions backwards compatible, ie: EXT4 ok to use as EXT3 and so on?
(I formatted my SD card with a EXT4 but the ROM I want to use says EXT3)
Do I have to re-install all my apps again once the new ROM is loaded, and what about the ones I bought? How to re-license them?
Finally, is the Baseband the same as the Radio (or where do I find Radio info on phone)
Thank you for any help.
EXT4 is faster than ext3. I am pretty sure, as long as it's an rom which is not too old it will also support ext4. A search through the rom's corresponding thread might help.
Just backup and restore your apps with titanium backup. The license from bought apps should be backed up and restored. Never read about someone who has problems at this point. If you really have problems, contact the dev of the app.
Yes, baseband is just another name for radio. You find out your one in Settings > About Phone.
Before you flash your new ROM install titanium backup. Do a batch backup of all of your apps and app data. That way, once you've flshed your new ROM you can just install titanium backup again and reinstall all of your apps and data as they'll be stored on your sd card.
As for bought apps, they should still be available anyway as they're linked to your google account. So as long as you sign in to google on your new ROM with the same account the market should recognize that you've already bought them and make them available for you again.
If it helps...
Thanks for your reply.
Say that I want to be sure and create a EXT3 partition as instructed, do I still need to keep EXT4 I created on rooting procedure?
You dont need EXT4 for Rooting (you dont need any EXT partition for this at all)
Either keep it, or delete and make EXT3 its up to you, EXT4 is slightly faster though.

When you followed the Desire rooting guide you mentioned did you follow step five? If you did then you will have partitioned your sd card with ext4. Basically you only need two partitions on your sd card at any time. So now you have ext4 & fat32 (the main part of your sd card will always be fat32, with a recommended 1gb of ext3 or ext4).
If you check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16808961#post16808961on you'll see that you can use ext3 or ext4 with Leedroid HD 3.3.3.
If you do want to get ext3 then just run GParted again (step 5 in the guide) and this time select ext3 instead of ext4.
Hope it helps.

I did follow step 5 and have a 1GB of EXT4 already created. I shall leave it as it is.
Is Leedroid HD 3.3.3 safe to use as a first time custom ROM?
Thanks for your help and ALL the replies.

I haven't tried Leedroid myself, but from browsing the thread it has some good reviews. Closest one I've tried is InsertCoin, but it's all about trying a few and seeing what you like.
Glad I could help.
LeeDroid is safe for a first custom rom. Rather fast and have minimal lag.
Just to say thanks to all that helped / replied.
I went ahead and installed LeedRoid 3.3.3 successfully.
Took a little gamble on the radio update as the instructions did not seem to match my set-up but all is working well.
Might need to look for a ROM with bigger text size as my eyes are struggling
Cheers all

Get roms based on Saga or Bravo? The text should be bigger.

[Q] Runnymede AIO V4.0.3 Special Edition - Issue with SD card

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum and to rooting and installing new roms, but since the issue with the lack of space on my Desire was giving me problems I decided to root, s-off and install a new rom this weekend.
I must say at first I thought I was way over my head, but after reading around the forum I started to understand a little bit of how the whole thing works.
I was sucessfull instaling everything and had the Runnymede up and running with 4Ext Recovery till the last hour. I was having a little bit of lag so I saw my sdcard was not formated as it was suposed to, or as it is listed on the developers forum of the Runnymede.
I had created the 1Ext with 512Mb, the 2Ext with 1024 and the swap with 1024, nevertheless everything was working properly with just a little lag.
So a few minutes ago I decided to format the sd card as per indication of a member here with the following guide 4ext_Partition Guide.zip - [Click for QR Code] (6.35 MB, 20 views).
After I booted the phone it won't pass the galaxy nexus splash screen, it just keeps splashing and never enters the rom. I retried to format the sd card but still with no success.
Did I do something wrong? Should I reformat the sdcard with another arrangement? Or do I need to wipe everything again and reinstall the ROM? I would like to avoid this last one since I had already everything ready and synced.
Looking forward to receive your expert comments, I remain sending you my best regards and thanking you for your help.
José
After reformat you need to flash rom again for that reason you stuck in boot loop
Runnymede AIO requires only FAT32 + 1-1.5 GB EXT 4, No second EXT, No swap
Regarding your question about back up: use titanium backup
Hi,
Thank you very much for your fast reply, I had no idea that reformating the partitions in the sd card I would to reinstall the rom. I am always learning
Well I have reformated the sd card and I am now installing the rom again, I hope everything goes well.
Thanks again.
Don't forget thanks button if helped, please
Done, thanks again
Well hello again, i have been watching the thread of the ROM i have installed from Runnymede and I have some doubts, could someone please help.
Thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315961&page=1160
Here are my questions:
- The reason I have rooted and s-off my desire was to install a new ROM to have space available for apps. The ROM is running perfectly but on the storage menu my internal space available was around 140 Mb, I have installed a few apps from the market and the space is now 101 Mb. Did I do something wrong and still don't have space available?
- Here are the steps I took: I had a stock HTC Desire with Hboot 0.93, so I rooted with unrevoked, s-off with revolution, installed 4Ext touch, formated the sdcard with 1 ext4 partition (1024Mb) and the rest fat32, wiped the phone, installed the rom, and that's it.
I can't remember if it installed the a2sd or ad2sdx, I did a typical install and only changed the camera option to record 720p.
The phone is working perfectly but I am wondering if I will be out of space after installing a few more apps?
If you need more information feel free to ask.
Thank you.
José

[Q] A2sd+: what is it, how do I install it?

Hi There,
I Have rooted and S-Off'd my Desire and set for HBoot Stock ROM. Running Custom ROM, but wanted to try RevolutioN v3.0, However I looks like the A2SD+ version is required.
I have read a number of posts on A2SD+, which seems to be a script to run from a terminal session. However there seem to be different ways to install this. Some threads mention "install a custom rom which has support for a2sd+"
Can anyone advise how to install A2SD+? What is the difference with Stock?
I am sure there is a simple obvious answer to this noob question.. but I seem to be missing it.
a2sd means you can store apps on sd instead of phone memory, the stock a2sd does not allow all apps and if you have root you can force more apps to the sd via this way , however i think this way does not extend memory for apps so there is a limit
i use data2sd as i need more space ,you need to partian sd card to do so and flash a script or do some stuff to it
A ROM with A2SD support just has A2SD written into it, as is the RevolutioN you want to use. A2SD is not really something you "install" as such.
As Keith says, you will need to partition your SD card. There are plenty of tutorials on this around the web and on this site. Just do a bit of searching. Best methods to perform this process are an oft discussed issue, but most agree that using a program called GParted is the best way to go. You will need to copy everything from your SD to your PC before you start, as you will need to format the SD. You can reload when done.
THIS should get you started at least. It says to use 512mb partition in Ext3, but you are better off with a 1gig/Ext4. The process is the same. Also, Step5 in THIS thread has a video how-to, that should help.
Happy Australia thread!!
