Hey all,
are there any news on the release date of the honeycomb source code? The first Xooms are shipping, so it shouldn't be too long, right?
There is a article on zdnet which suggests android developers want android to be closed source to avoid Fragmentation. Also focus on the statement .
If they want the Android Marketplace on phones, they have to use Google's location services; if they want Honeycomb, they have to remove physical buttons from their tablets

This is possible only because Honeycomb is closed source till now.It may make sense for Google to continue this.
I cant post links being a new user.Search for following keywords:
Zdnet How to deal with Android fragmentation: closed source
came across an article on itproportal.com titled "Asus Outs Honeycomb Source Code For Eee Pad Transformer". due to my new status i cannot link the page directly, but i think it will get you the source code for honeycomb.
i did not try it myself.
I read that Google won't release the sourcecode until Ice Cream is near release. They're moving elements from Honeycomb over to Ice Cream as we speak. Think i read it over at Android Central or Phandroid.

Yep I read the same thing somewhere as well.
Informed speculation is that Honeycomb was thrown together fairly quickly and consists of some ugly hacks, and google don't want it released to the community in that state. There was a comment last week where google confirmed they will not be any official releases of code prior to the release of ice cream.
According to google they will release it then they are ready, ehat ever that means.....
honestly, i just had a xoom nd it overheated everytime i did anything ei. web browsing, market, gaming, etc. and honeycomb sucks. theres nothing compatible with it worth using. all the good games dont work, psx4droid doesnt work. its too the point im actually going to say this "Ipad2 is a better dvice." they had everything ipad 1 could use working on the ipad2. we have 2 wait till people think they need to fix the compatiblilty issiues. and untill xoom starts making major sales, this wont happen
Asus has released part of the source code on the eepad page
http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_TF101/
Hopefully it helps the devs
I'm downloading it now! Even though I have no idea what to do with it. haha.
I read that what asus released was only source code to a kernel.... not honeycomb itself....maybe im wrong tho....and google is gonna get sued I bet.....
Not released yet waiting too.

sued for not releasing honeycomb? they said they will when its ready ...
Google (plus the OHA) writes code which they own. they can do anything with it they want. Currently they are giving it to a few customers (google's customers are manufacturers like ASUS and Motorola). currently the customers (ASUS Moto etc...) have the right (given them by google) to ship compiled code to consumers.
Google has promised that sometime in the future they will give manufacturers permission to ship the code provided they give this same permission to the consumers who buy there product (they are under no legal obligation to give code to people who don't buy there product).
Also Google has promised to give the code directly to anyone provided that it keeps its "free to copy and modify" permissions as it is passed along.
for now the code belongs to google and they can do as they like. In the past they have honored such promises and i really expect them to honor this one.
Rofl. JB has been released for months now and they still won't release honeycomb. How stupid. <3
That's a fail because Honeycomb got released alongside ICS.

But I wouldn't worry about this for a nice long while.

Google announced 2.4 at Google I/O 2011 the other day, but didn't say that 2.4 was Ice Cream. I think 2.4 is just an updated Gingerbread, sort of like 2.0 to 2.1 was still Eclair, and 3.0 to 3.1 is still Honeycomb. I have a feeling Ice Cream will be something more like 3.2 or higher, since it's supposed to be the fusion of Honeycomb and Gingerbread and cover all devices.
That being said, I'm hopeful that Google will cover us with the update, since HTC is one of their 18 partners that promises to give quick OS updates within 18 months of the device releasing, of which the end of this year still would cover us.

Most refs on the 'net state the next version's number to be 3.4. They certainly won't be naming is 2.4 since 2.4<3.0. You simply don't go backwards in versioning.

Yeah, Google will announce the updates. What about the carriers and manufacturers who like to skin their Android builds with buggy-at-best themes like Sense and Blur?

To elaborate a little more on what Gawantu said, at io, Google said they partnered with the manufacturers and carriers, including HTC and Motorola, to bring out updates for up to 18 months after a device is released. But how quickly hasn't been said.
Honestly though, if it took the CM team just 4 months to bring CM7 stable to 20 something devices including a couple tablets, with different hardware, while doing it in their spare time all the while having to reverse engineer and hack their way through it. It shouldn't take any longer for the professional developers at say, HTC, to bring an update to a few that are similarly spec'd and have all the resources to do so even while making a new version of Sense.

So now that we have that super important technicality out of the way, any speculation as to whether or not we'll see ICS as an OTA update? I'm hesitant to assume that we will. I think CM8 is our best hope. Or CMwhatever.
CM9, lol
but HTC is really debating on relasing or not because of something to do with sense and they want to figure out which direction today... best bet is going to have to wait for CM9 like all of us are doing so impatiently haha
I wrote a letter to HTC months ago asking the future upgrade
they didnt give me clear answer
Seems to me that DZ will not get further upgrade

Breaking News: Source Code Released for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
http://youtu.be/QQ_fiepb2Mc
Breaking News video by QBKing77
original post:
Hi! We just released a bit of code we thought this group might be interested in.
Over at our Android Open-Source Project git servers, the source code
for Android version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is now available.
Here's how to get it:Follow the instructions at
http://source.android.com/source/downloading.htmlCheck out the
'ics-release' branch:repo init -u
https://android.googlesource.com/platform/manifest -b android-4.0.1_r1
That's it! However since this is a large push, please be aware that it
will take some time to complete. If you sync before it's done, you'll
get an incomplete copy that you won't be able to use, so please wait
for us to give the all-clear before you sync.
This is actually the source code for version 4.0.1 of Android, which
is the specific version that will ship on the Galaxy Nexus, the first
Android 4.0 device. In the source tree, you will find a device build
target named "full_maguro" that you can use to build a system image
for Galaxy Nexus. Build configurations for other devices will come
later.
Unfortunately we still don't have our Gerrit code review servers back
online. That remains our top priority though, and we hope to have them
back soon.
This release includes the full history of the Android source code
tree, which naturally includes all the source code for the Honeycomb
releases. However, since Honeycomb was a little incomplete, we want
everyone to focus on Ice Cream Sandwich. So, we haven't created any
tags that correspond to the Honeycomb releases (even though the
changes are present in the history.)

HUGE requirements will continue the fragmentation.
Devices like the desire hd or similar, wich gets ics, but will be stuck on 4.0.
About 30% will be stuck on GB because of the grow of android this year, but will be smaller, as most new devices launch with ics.
And so on.
Updating should be like IOS, when an ipad 1 or iphone 3gs is still upgradeable to ios 5.1.1, wich has been released 2 weeks ago.
These are limited in the app store, but who cares?

That's the difference between a monopolized environment and a liberal one. Monopoly is easier to control, predict and dictate. But don't be as naive as to think apple doesn't turn obsolete old equipment with their OS upgrades. The timeline is just much more dilated than those of the less controled environments.
Dear all,
I am the kernel developer from i9103. As both our machine and i927 shares v. similar hardware configurations, I could help to build a custom kernel with features like init.d support, rooting, overclock, auto brightness adjustment and etc. for i927.
As long as I could get the source codes from Samsung Opensource, then, I could help to start cooking for it.
As our i9103 still haven't get ICS official update (but, we get a leaked one), after we submit the ICS source codes request to Samsung, we get it! So, without any official ICS release, we can still get the source codes from Saumsung!
I have already submitted a request for ICS kernel source for Captivate Glide, so, maybe all of you could help to submit a request as well. Hope that the more the requests, the faster the release time.

News flash, Samsung got there buts kicked by apple and didn't win the current lawsuit they were in, Thus them losing money meaning not so much hope..
Sent From My Iced Creamd SGH-I927 Cappy Glide
They're also appealing that ruling. It seems unlikely this will mean bad news for us in the short-run. Long-term it might mean they won't give us JB officially, but from what I understand our trusty developer(s) could as soon as they have the ICS stuff. Will take time, but it is realisticaly feasible.
Also, Samsung has already put in the time to create the version we've got now with ATT. Unless the ruling covers our phone specificaly we've got nothing to fear from the law suits. And even if it does cover our Glide, legally things won't take effect for us before the final ruling. According to Google Apple's claims don't cover anything they could relatively easily work around.
So, as every hitchhiker already knows: Don't Panic

I signed the petition, but i doubt it will do any good. sorry for being a downer.
Signed it! hope this will bring a change into Google.
Signed... even when I know that doesn't change anything... :/
Signed,sealed,delivered..Give us some KITKAT love Google..
Nexus devices only get 18 months support. You can't expect Google to keep updating an old handset indefinitely it's just not feasible.
Deal with it.

Signed.
Thank you!
Btw, if they release the source (AOSP or other devices), would it be possible for us to get Kit Kat unofficially?

done.
as someone already said, we got to deal with it. But I will sign that anyway, doesn't do any harm or costs something. So I encourage everyone to do so. You never know...and we sure are a vast number of GNEX users. So unite and sign :good:
PS: Can please a moderator make this sticky? Please?
Signed it, but also don't believe it'll help.
It would be good marketing on Googles part but I guess the investment is too big.

Internet petitions are worthless this is a total estate of time. This is there normal device life cycle. I'm going to start saving to replace this obsolete brick and get an n5.

I don't know man, that sounds pretty ridiculous. Okay sure Google is following their rule of eighteen months but they said it could friggin run on 512 mb of ram! And we have double that.
I don't know about others but it's fairly redundant.

Google made kitkat to work on devices with minimal ram... Ect, and they can't update their 2 year old phone? The 2010 iPhone 4 god iOS 7, come on Google.
Anyway, well get it unofficially.
Signed.

Google is ****ing ridiculous, I'm never going to buy another ****ty phone from Google "Nexus" brand ever again, the next time I will go with Samsung Galaxy S4 or something better from Samsung and not "pure android" experience (at least then I will get a phone with upgradeable storage and better specs)...
This is outrageous, bought this phone just because of "Official Android Updates support" and apart from the phone getting very sluggish with Android 4.2 and a just slightly better with 4.3 (but not even close to what it was in terms of performance with 4.1) now they make this ridiculous decision...
So now I will have to swallow this disrespect with customers by not getting KitKat update, and btw, the phone have more than needed RAM to run this KitKat version according to the mighty Google statements...
Thanks Google, you just lost a customer for your Nexus devices.
I want my "low spec device" with 4.4.
It's not our problem that they just pushed it to the 18th month because they couldn't develop a 3.4+ kernel
C'mon let's make this viral!
