[Q] Difference between "FULL WIPE" and" "format data" ? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Maybe a stupid question, but is there a difference between a "full wipe" and in ClockworkMod Recovery "mounts and storage/format data" ?
and what should i do before flashing a new rom ?
Only "Full wipe" or are there any other important things to do before flashing a new rom to keep my phone clean ?

To do a full wipe, go to the mounts and storage menu, and format "System, Boot, Cache, Data, and SD-Ext"

so i just have to run the fullwipe.zip and there are not more options to keep my phone clean ?

Thanks, didn't know about that. Always flashed roms only with data/cache wipe.

uh oh. what did I do ?

hey everyone, troubles.....
went from a modaco custom rom 3.1 to kagudroid 1.1. it didn't take for some reason and it shows the "kagudroid" boot logo, then the lock screen, then kagudroid, and repeat. like an infinite loop. I used NANDroid and wiped it before I applied kagudroid. what did i do wrong ?
Just try it again?
should i shut down, wipe, and reapply update ?
or shut down, reapply update ?
or ?
do a full wipe & re-flash custom rom
is there a difference between a "full wipe" and the "wipe" function on the boot screen ?
Wipe ext on your sd and reflash.

Not just those wipe data/dalvik cache.
Tried wiping dalvik cache. Wouldn't let me. Told me to use ad b
wouldn't let me wipe ext /SD either. told me to use adb.
what is adb >?
try "normal" wipe (the first option) and then reinstall the rom.
if the above method unable to solve your problem, backup all your wanted data to your pc. re create a new ext & do a fresh install.

[Solved]Wipe Dalvik Cache

I tried to manually flash ROMs by booting into recovery. But in order to do that I need to do a full wipe. But I am not sure for this particular "Wipe Dalvik Cache" option. I select it and it says E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 (Invalid arguments)
But after I press Yes - Wipe Dalvik Cache is says Dalvik Cache wiped. Have I actually wipe that dalvik cache? =/
That's an error normally caused if you wiped data and cache then went onto wipe the Dalvik-Cache manually in the advanced menu.
What you are doing is trying to wipe it twice and it gets confused so throws up this error.
As a general rule you shouldn't need to use this advanced method if you have already wiped data and cache.
Not the best answer but I believe to be accurate.
Just use full wipe 1.3, saves loads of hassle for wiping between ROMs.
Depends on how often you update and change ROMs as has been discussed many times. This question was just asking about dalvik cache.

[Q] Clockworkmod Q's

Hey there folks,
I am new to android, and am totally into the custom scene. Problem is, I have some questions regarding Clockworkmod, if someone wouldn't mind answering for me.
When installing a new .zip from the SD card, there are numerous steps you have to perform before actually installing the .zip.
For example this ROM to flash you need to "Wipe Dalvik and Cache"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1372376
In this ROM you need to "Wipe Data/Dalvik and Cache"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382022
So I need to clarify a few things.
When it says "Wipe Data" its > Wipe Data/Factory reset
Wipe Dalvik is > Advanced > Wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe Cache is > Wipe cache partition
If someone could clarify this for me please, then that would be great.

Schmee
Yes, you are correct.
Cool, thanks you very much Sir!!!

[Q] CWM Recovery wipe question

Hi all,
I was having some boot loop issues after installing AOKP 3 (maguro) on my galaxy nexus through CWM. Several users asked if I had wiped my "data cache and galvik cache" before installing, which I hadnt.
The options available in CWM are "Wipe data/factory reset" "Wipe cache partition" and through the advanced menu "Wipe Dalvik Cache"
Should I only be wiping the cache partition and dalvik? or should i also be running the data/factory reset wipe? And if I do the data/factory reset wipe, will I loose my AOKP zip on the sd card?
Thanks in advance
you should choose wipe data/factory reset. it will not delete anything on the sdcard partition.

Wipe data/factory reset, you can wipe the cache partition if you want for good measure but I believe the data wipe does that, then go under advanced and wipe dalvik. You can also format system under mounts and storage. If you do all this it will give you a 100% clean slate to flash a new ROM. It will not wipe your SD card if done through CWM.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the help... AOKP4 running perfect now.
CWM
So i was trying to intall a new rom through CWM and it said "back button disabled" and now i can select things but nothing happens just the CWM icon show up and i hit the power button and it takes me back to the menu. any help would be great!?

This happens if you hit volume + right after volume - (or the opposite) in the recovery. Try to hit volume + and right after, volume - (or the opposite) when this happens and it will get back to normal.

IF it is like wiping the Dalvik cache, battery status and all, then the SD card data are not erased.
Just make sure that you clear all the above mentioned(Dalvik cache, battery stat , data/factory reset.)
I'm so thankful i made "wipe data/factory reset" then "wipe cache partition" then "wipe dalvik cache" and then "wipe battery stats", then I installed CM 7.2
Thank you, the partition is still there
