Desire HD bought on Ebay - diagnostic tool - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've just bought on Ebay an HTC Desire HD New.
I've read some threats and I'm concerned about battery, is it so bad?
I have an HTC touch HD and I like it, but I think Desire HD will be a great upgrade, do you agree?
I want to test my new HTC (I dont want to be tricked) on hardware, is there any tool that can diagnostic me the hardware and search for any problem? Because I've 14 days to sent it back....
Thanks

Is it brand new? It can take up to a week to settle in.

The battery will be bad if you use 3G/HTCSense.com/GPS/Sync with always on. The custom roms provide a brilliant battery-saving boost to DHD.

Yes, its brand new, but the user had (0) feedback, but paypal cover the transaction.
It will arrive next week, then I will give some feedback.
Should I "install" new ROMs? In my TOUCH HD I have energy ROMs and they are very good.

When the phone arrives just use it, dont try and install any new roms or radios. Just get used to the phone and how it works/doesn't work.
Whilst your getting used to the phone have a read on how to s-off the HBoot and radio, root the phone and install new roms. Once you have all the info and the phone is going well, you can start enjoying yourself.
You should know very quickly if there is something wrong with the phone, but if you need any info or help just slap another post on here and people will be more then happy to help.
Good luck
Blinky

I've received today and its simply amazing and fast.
I'm still discovering all new functions.
Any software to have internet through PC? I have a MAC OSX, and I need to open the virtual windows to have internet on HTC (HTC SYNC).

when you connect your DHD to a computer a prompt should come up and choose Internet pass-through, or go to Settings>Connect to PC> Default Connection type and choose Internet pass-through

Yes, I know, but that works on Windows, and I need to work on MAC OSX, because everytime I want internet I need to open virtual windows.
There is any software like HTC Sync for MAC?

its a question that i have been waiting for.
seems like any push data is affected because the app shuts down data to save battery.
I know you can set it so it switches on for a 1min every 15mins but if you have GTalk or constant emails being pushed, it means you wont get them until the app switches the data back on to reteive the emails/messages.
this is my understanding on how this app works.
if there is a program that auto switches ur phone to 2G when idle or screen is off, then i think this is a better solution.
This one does turn on when your screen does lol..
But earlier it stopped my data working even with screen on, i had to go into settings and disable then re enable and it worked! maybe it was cus i was at work and it tried to connect when i had no signal.. i dunno
Re: juicedefender
it's a known problem and the developer is working on a fix. I won't be using it until it is

Is it? Whats the fix? Just turning it off and back on? Because disabling JD didnt work..

This happened to me yesterday as well. Only way I could get mobile internet back again was to reboot
Hi,
I installed JuiceDefender two days ago. Since then, I have had wifi problems. I can't be 100% sure that they are caused by JD, but I had no wifi problems before that, using several different networks.
My phone is SE Xperia X10, but I understand that the app works the same way on both phones.
The problem is:
When wifi is enabled, it takes several seconds to enter the "wireless networks" menu in settings. It then takes 20 seconds entering the "wireless settings" menu. During this period, the screen goes black. Sometimes, I get a message that the wifi app has crashed. Also: When I connect to a network, it works fine for 1-5 minutes, but after a while the phone does not seem to receive any data, even though it says "connected". The same wifi network works perfectly on my computer.
I have tried rebooting the phone, uninstalling/reinstalling JuiceDefender, etc.
Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? Any hints on how to solve the problem?

happened again today with mobile data at work, it turned it self off. does the developer know about the bug?

Juicedefender is not in market anymore.
I bought this a few days ago and it has been working great but i was just prompted to update to the latest beta and nows things are not running too good.....may need to disable for a while.
uninstalled mine. just cause i wasnt getting good internet at work. seems better now. still a good app in theory. better than anything winmo had to offer.
Ive left it on but dont use it anymore.. Battery seems to have improved anyway
Re: juicedefender
the developer has released a beta to try and fix the issues. looks like the different carriers are causing problems with resuming the apn connection
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Gotta say, seems to be working without an issue on my phone
One thing i would like to know tho is that i can see the settings to change the rules for activation of wifi and apn but i would like to set these to 1m every 30mins rather than 15mins, is this possible ?
I only seem to change it to 2m for every half hour...seems to defeat the pont in changing it...What have i missed ?
It's absolutely helped my battery life. I think it's just about doubled it overall. I haven't bought the full version yet but I do intend to. Not because I want the extra features, but to support the work done on the free version - superb!

Error downloading local weather

The weather app can find my location, but it won't download the weather for it, which means it won't show anything on the home clock widget. Any ideas?

Are you connecting through Wi-Fi or 3G?
Does Google maps work?
You could try a hard reset to restore your device back to factory settings and hopefully that may resolve your problem.
I've tried both, and yep Google maps works - its weird cause if I load the location as a separate location it will actually download

its a well known issue, if you live in UK in most cases it wont work. it also doesnt work for me.
what i did i simply put the city where i live as a new location and then add it to the clock widget, hopefully future fix will solve this cuz current location is quite important for some

Where do you currently live? just wondering if this could be caused by a Radio reception issue. I know you will be running the stock Radio version, but maybe upgrading to a different Radio version might help as this can improve GPS, signal strength, etc.
Have you tried a Hard Reset? This will restore your phone back to factory settings, it will not delete anything on your SD card. Trying this might be worthwhile especially if you have installed any conflicting apps. If you are willing to do this, try the following:
1. Turn the power off. If your HTC Desire is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it.
2. Hold the Volume Down button
3. Press and release the Power button
4. You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
5. Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
6. Press and release the Power button
7. Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
If you selected YES, all data including third-party applications will be deleted from the HTC Desire. Once the wipe is complete, the phone will reboot to its factory fresh state.
EDIT: Just seen the above post. since it's a known issue, I doubt trying what I suggested above would resolve the problem

Yep, I agree with you there, I doubt it will fix this issue. But when appropriate Radio version's are made available, it might be worth flashing your Radio version to another. I did this on my HD and HD2 when I had them and this greatly improved signal strength, GPS, Battery life, etc.

Yes it does.
Having a rooted phone gives the end user unprecedented control over the phone, enabling them to have limitless possibilities. Essentially unlocking your phone's full potential. With root/superuser access on your phone you would be able to flash modified roms/radios, have access to certain functions on "root only" applications (example: wireless tether for root users - ability to tether your phone). The possibilities are endless.
There are also risks involved in doing this, it can void your warranty (unless you return it to stock ROM, Radio versions). The most apparent risk is bricking your device. If this happens, your phone is and forever will be, nothing more than, a brick

Hey, we are all noobs
Basically, to have root access on a Linux based system such as Android means you have the equivalent access of Administrator on a Windows based computer. You will have unrestricted full access to nearly all aspects of the android system stack.
Finding root is a matter of time, if it can be built, it can be broken (i hope ). Once you have root access you can continue to flash a customised recovery image and a compatible bootloader/spl (secondary program loader) which will in turn, enable you to flash custom modified ROMs.
Like I mentioned before matey, I have not tried this on the Android platform, only WinMo using HSPL unlocker. I'm not sure how easy/difficult it will be. Do not worry though, because if this device can be rooted, im sure it will all be explained very clearly, along with troubleshooting guides. All we have to do is carefully read the steps and understand the concept before attempting anything. That's what this forum's like this are for, a great community with so many helpful people, all willing to help if they can. If we are unsure of something, all we need to do is ask
Cheers for the confidence, I'm gonna need it lol. what if we can't find root access? has that ever happened for an Android handset?

I think (I hope) it will only be a matter of time before we get root access with the Desire, AFAIK I don't think there are any Android handset's released thus far which cannot potentially be rooted. There are other Android phones currently running 2.1 which have been rooted successfully. The problem that we face with the Desire is that so far, it's proving very difficult to gain write access.
Paul @ modaco.com has revealed he has found a method to gain root access with the Desire, which he hopes can also be replicated on other devices. However, he has stated that HTC have implemented some rather sneaky protection methods that prevent writing of data to key partitions (boot, recovery, system etc.) which prevent us from enabling custom ROMs, etc.
He is hoping that an engineering SPL (and a way to flash it) emerges soon. We will have to wait and see.

I've had a similar issue. I work in Sunderland (Pennywell) and the phone picks up Castletown (area couple of miles away just over the river as a location) without any weather, although GPS picks up exact location no problem. However the village where I live in Cleveland and the even smaller village my mother in law lives in (Thormanby, near Thirsk) pick up the correct name and show the weather so I have to assume its picking up via mast/network as GPS is correct. So it must be a network issue rather than phone.
I've also noticed on mine that if it picks up a location but no weather then if I try to scroll on the weather widget, I get a Sense UI fail/force closure and the OS restarts. Its ok if I tap on the widget to open it first and then scroll, then its ok
same issue here. It worked on day 1 when I was at work, then worked ok when I got home that day, then stopped working on day 2. weird! hope they fix it soon.

Hi there,
TrueCaller doesn't activate the GPS. If you have connected TC to your Twitter account and have location and GPS on however it will use the GPS. But like I said, TC cannot initiate the GPS by itself
Thanks for using TrueCaller!
Thank you all for you replies
So let's make the point...it's not truecaller's fault....my girlfriend barely knows what is a software...xD....my parents also can't do such a thing....xD....i had this issue with AR HD 5.1.3 if i remember right, then i patched to 5.1.4 without full wipe....so i think i'll try flashing 5.1.6 and see what happens

@superstick i forgot: i don't get what you mean but i've turned off gps almost everywhere, moreover it would be strange if it turns on only with calls i think
The Mock Location is not the GPS signal. It is about capturing where you are whenever you are at different places. I guess its nothing to do with that.(I did not used that before, so cant tell. lol)
Oh yes i allow program to track my position but internet only,e not using gps so it shouldn't be that...

If it doesn't work at all then you might be on an old Panther plan that doesn't has swappables. My plan is really old and doesn't have swappables but it doesn't seem to stop the rest of Orange reminding me to choose the ones I want. I've gotten text messages about it and it appears in the online account management as well. Can't remember if its ever appeared on my bill.

It's a ICS issue. The above guide fools the webpage to think your running gingerbread. However it didn't work for me.
You have to spoof your user agent to a phone that we know works. Dolphin HD Browser has the option to spoof your agent. I had the same problem on my EVO 3D on gingerbread. Very stupid.
Seemed to work through normal browser

It didn't work for me either. Orange swappables would be great if they worked properly but they don't.
When I first went to select my swappables they were all available, I selected Sky Sports and tried it out and it worked fine. I went back to use it a 2nd time and it tells me my phone isn't compatible. I gave Orange a call and was told that they'd deselect my swappables and to select them again and they'd work but like the OP, I went to select them and the Horoscope thing was the only 1 available. Again I phoned Orange up and they some how made them all available to me so tried to galaxy nexus trick for Sky Sports but had no luck. In the end I got Deezer and The Times.

[Q] Internet pass-through help

I have a HTC Wildfire (Not S), and I often don't have credit. So I searched stuff up, and apparently I could use HTC Sync for "Internet Pass-Through". I've installed Sync and both devices recognise each other, but on the 'Connect to PC' screen there is no internet pass-through option. Any ideas?
Thanks.
This doesnt work that way. You can use connectify to share your internet through wifi provided your network card supports it.

Thanks for the reply but sadly, we use an ntl cable modem, and my dad won't let us use wifi or wireless stuff it's why I've been looking up ways to reverse tether my Wildfire, and also why I asked this, as with my firmware etc. it seems impossible to do. So I guess it's no internet till I can persuade him but thanks anyways
There was thread related to reverse tethering somewhere in this forum but I never tried it. Just search the wildfire section.

Back up your entire SD card to a pc first (disk mode), and use the actual phone as a card reader.
Worked for me!
