Hello, XDA commnity. I'm really hoping you guys can come through for me once again, and I apologize if this has already been discussed before.
Anyway, a little while ago, while rebooting my phone (a rooted Droid 2 running Liberty 1.5 if that helps) I got a message in the notification bar that my SD card was damaged.
Please tell me if I can recover all my card's contents without having to format the card. I have a lot of important stuff on there (including two nandroid backup images) and I absolutely MUST recover everything. Please have some good news for me!

This happened to me this morning. I crapped my pants, remounted my SD card in Settings > Storage and it mounted just fine. As soon as it did I managed to back up everything on the card.
Failing that, try booting into Ubuntu if you've got it handy and try reading the card from there. I've had memory cards/sticks which Windows has reported dead but worked just fine on Ubuntu before.
Hope this helps.

So I have searched for this error and no one seems to have an answer that fits my problem. I got an error after booting that stated SD card unexpectedly removed and gave me a triangle with an exclamation point in the center
the card works fine
it will mount up perfectly from recovery, i even pushed several roms to it and tried (cyanogen, RR, and SkyRaider) all three worked beautifully, but as soon as I boot up BAM "SD card unexpectedly removed" and I can't access anything
the computer reads it just fine so I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the card, also with it reading in recovery it seems there is nothing wrong with the phone
is this a problem with ROMs?
I could try to do a factory reset and see if that works... but its really annoying :\
any help?
I would try reformatting the card on your PC. The card may have a bad sector that the PC and Recovery ignore. The phone OS tends to be a little more picky about those sort of things.

This worked
Thank you, I am running good now
I noticed when I was trying to backup my SD card (pictures and whatnot) that some of the files were corrupt
I will make sure I keep a regular backup just in case its a sign of the card going bad
good thing is my titanium backups were all perfect

You are on the right path - don't forget, a good practice is to back up your SD card to your PC regularly.
Why? If (when really) the SD goes wonky, you have a PC backup of the card, and you can get another SD, format it on the PC, load the backups you made, and be back in business in short order.

My solution was to format and start over, that was the only thing that worked for me
I've gotten this a few times and it is a PITA because it resets all the notification sounds and also the phone reboots. Once it does it, the only way I can get it to work is to remove the card, put it in the PC, let Win7 do a fix and repair errors and then it will work. I tried removing and reinserting, and it would mount the card and immediately give me the 'sd card unexpectedly removed' message.
I tried reformatting, and the sd card worked for a while and then I got the 'unexpectedly removed" message again after a few days. The last time it gave me that message, I just did the repair errors thing again and it's been working without fail for about 4 days now. It seems like it's going to be an ongoing thing though.
I've been googling like a mad person trying to find a real fix for this. I saw a thread on Android central where they guy said he put his wife's card in his phone and it did the same thing; but worked fine in hers. He mentioned it might be related to the 2.2 OTA update. My problem did start after that update.
In another forum thread, someone posted that they bought a new card, and it gave them the same message. So it doesn't appear to be a bad card; which is what I originally thought. I'd hate to buy a new one and have same issue (i have a 16gb card currently).
(sorry for long post)
I have the same problem! I'm using a Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 2. Previously i've been running Froyo 2.2 over the phone with a 16 GB microSD Card without problem. Later i've been using a 2 GB microSD Card and works fine, but now i'm runnin' Gingerbread ROM From verizon with 16 GB microSD Card and the messages "SD Card unexpectedly removed" don't stop.... the card works fine over other phones... even the stereo of my car can read perfectly the card's content.
I don't know if this is a problem with the update or what????
I don't think in the versions of "Bad sectors" because i check everthing and the problem persist.
The problem appears when i'm playing music... later of that the problem appears at the camera, the file explorer or another app that tries to read the SD Card.
I reboot the phone and works fine but after a couple of minutes the same [email protected]$%&t appears again....
I'm tired of reading forums telling me that is a problem with the sectors... that is a LIE!
no matters the class of the card because i've tried with Class 2, Class 4 and works fine.
This night i'll go to the store that solds me that coursed card to change it!
if tomorrow my problem was solved i been writing at this same forum!

I do not think someone saying it is bad sectors means they are lying.
I think they are merely trying to help you determine what the problem could possibly be.

did you format the card and try again as suggested earlier? That usually clears up any issues with sd cards unless they're fubar'd. Just make sure you back your card up first.
Whenever my card does this I put it into my Windows computer, right click on the card and go to properties/tools/error checking/ and check both boxes and let it run. It fixes my issues every time without formatting the card.
I had that problem a while back with one of Verizon's updates after 2.2. Reformatted card. worked fine in other phones but still said same thing everytine I put it back in the dinc. Ended up getting a new SD card then all was fine.

If you have an ext extension on your sd use G-Parted (google it) to format your ext2/3/4 partition.
anyway to solve it?

SD card unmounted without you doing anything? What did you do before you encounter such problem? I experience it before.. when after flashing a ROM.. and it occurs.
But as I know flashing ROM can corrupt the SD card. So you may consider to format it.(of course save all the necessary files in it first)
a failing sd card will also cause this, i had a 16gb give up the ghost last week, only realised when i took the card out and put it directly into my computer and it kept un mounting.
It doesn't have to be a bad SD-card though. Android is pretty picky, so even some bad files or something similar might be the cause.
I had the same problem and for me (not everyone though) reforming the card on the pc fixed it.
im using the ota rom as i have not root it.. it failed 5 times in a row today... after restarting the 6th time it worked...

My SD CARD recently has been giving me some issues. It has worked fine since I got the phone in Aug 2010. I went to access my pictures yesterday and as they started popping up, an SD card picture popped up and said please insert SD card. No pictures could be accessed. I went to phone and SD storage and it said my SD card was unmounted. I went to mount it when I saw this, pressed mount, started to mount and stopped all of a sudden. Now I have an icon of an SD card with a question mark in my taskbar. The message says" SD card damaged. You may have to reformat it." When I go to reformat it, it gives me the message "external media in unknown state". Any ideas?

Because you need to give us more than 3 hours to help you. Being impatient and bumping your thread like this makes people NOT want to help you.
i wish someone could please help me with this issue because its also happening to me, it happend twice already on two different sd cards, i even took the sd card out and put it into my Samsung Epic but still it says the sd card is blank . please help
I used to get this message way back in June 2010 when I first bought my Evo. It happened exactly as you are describing. I thought my SD card was bad. So I moved all my contents to my PC, formatted the SD card, then moved the contents back. It may have been coincidence, but it helped, for a little while, and then the exact same problem returned.
All this happened before I had ever rooted. I then rooted my phone, installed a custom rom, and have never had the problem again, even though it was the exact same SD Card.
Are either of you who are having this problem currently rooted? Or are you both stock? If you are stock, you could try rooting, and installing the stock rom. If you aren't comfortable with that, then try formatting the card, and if you have a spare microSD try that just to troubleshoot it. If you get the same result with a different card that you know is good, that will narrow it down to being related to software on the phone.

I had a similar issue, I reformatted my memory card, and the problem has not returned. It has been seven months since then.
If you are formatting it on a mac, make sure that you set the partition type correctly to MBR (Master Boot Record)
Tonight I have been having problems with my SD card, anytime I try and download a file to it, I get the error "SD card unexpectedly removed" and then I can't access the SD card at all until I reboot
Any help appreciated. I'm running miui freshly squeezed with a class 10, 16 GB card

Back up everything you have in your SD card.
I had that same symptom once. After a few reboot I lost the SD card. It became unreadable/unformatted.
So, just in case. Back up your data first.

Cheers, done a bit more digging and its an issue for quite a lot of people. Backed up the card and using the standard 8gb that came with the phone. Ordered a new one too from play.com, as they are in the sale

I had the same problem unexpectedly too the other night. I took the SD card and via a usb adaptor I connected it to my Windows 7 computer. A window popped up asking if I want to scan and fix for errors or continue without scanning. I usually just continued without scanning when connecting my phone directly but this time I let it scan and fix. Low and behold once it finished the scan I tried it again in my phone and it mounted successfully. Ever since then I've had no further problems since either.

This happened to my 16gb mmc. Went on for a couple of months. I ignored it and mounted it manually. It died a couple weeks ago. I had no back up. Devo

Yup, same happened to me, lost everything on the memory card (though I had backups of the important stuff)
Same Problem
Guys i have been experiencing the same problem for some days now.
Found this post here; Was thinking the problem has been solved over here, but you all are reporting your problem.
Any there anyway this problem can be fixed or as most of you mention. The lifespan of the card is getting close.
Or I should just prepare for a new sd card (which am not ready for now).
My Case here is kindda different because when i boot into recovery, the sd card shows up and works fine.
when i boot into android then it cant be found.
???
i have same problem with android 4.0.4 and sense 4+
i must be reset my phonee
my phone is HTC Desire 268. now for a little while my sd card did have a problem when i first brought it but it was fine afterwords but today after I restarted my phone, my phone again is getting problem with sd card the sd card mounts for a little time than it unmount ( giving the status "SD card unexpectedly removed"), then mount it self again and unmounts itself again. this happens 3 to 4 times before it competently unmounts and never mounts until i remove and add the sd card again and the cycle countinues. please can you help me.??
Hello, I have a completely factory phone that I have never rooted or flashed. My phone all of a sudden cannot read my sd card and says I have to format it, I've pulled the battery out and restarted it, I've taken the sd card out and put it in my computer as well and my computer says there is an error and the card needs to be formatted. I would just do that except for the fact that I have probably 200 pics on my sd card that I would like to get off first. Would anyone no how I could recover the pics on my sd card or repair it so I don't have to format it.
I would appreciate any help solving this problem.
Thanks
