I decided to try my first custom ROM... (installing virtous) and have a few questions/issues:
1) I started with a Nandroid backup.
2) I did a full titanium backup
3) I used ROM manager to install Virtous (did a full system swipe)...
Ok.. here is where I am having my issues
After the install, I went back to the marketplace and installed titanium backup.
What option should I restore? I would like to get all the widgets and data restored. I tried restore all apps+system data but I am wondering if that is reinstalling the bloatware that virtous removed. If so, what are the correct options in Titanium backup I should use?
Next, I tried to reinstall everything but I got that dreaded low on storage and then out of storage space error. My phone has lots of storage both internal and on the SD card - so the restore (I am guessing) failed at some indeterminate point. Most of my widgets were not loading properly (beautiful widget, pure calendar, multi-icon etc) after the attempted restore.
Regardless, even if I clean-up the widgets, the low memory message persisted so I was left with no choice but to revert to my previous nandroid backup .
So... how do you install a custom rom and easily reestablish your previous state/settings without getting the low/ out of storage warning?
Also, one of my goals is to get a deodexed rom so I can install custom themes (e.g., battery mods, etc). Can I just flash the deodexed stock rom over my current rom (I did not understand deodexed when I first upgraded to froyo) without having to do a swipe? Will I run into any issues?

I tried again with less apps/ data and still have no luck.
I did a restore all apps and system data from titanium, got a low storage than out of storage error (the phone has over 60% of its storage available so I know I am nowhere near close to actually using all the storage).
When titanium completed, most apps forced close (gmail, rom manager, etc) so I assume the storage error is impacting the restore.
Back to my nandroid backup again.
If I am running stock Froyo, can I just flash a new sense based froyo without wiping? (trying to find a way to experiment and really want to get a deodexed rom installed)
When new ROM is flashed, in TB, try reinstalling only user apps, not system apps.
Why?
The new ROM you flash and the ROM you are coming from should both have system apps already in them, so why reinstall system apps from the old ROM that most likely exist in the new ROM?
But how do I reestablish the previous settings? Or do I have to reconfigure all my accounts, etc each time I install a new rom.

uncommon 1.1 on my phone is doing same thing. 1.0 had no problem.
Just a theory as I haven't tried to install another ROM...
I noticed the touchdown data file on my phone was quite big (>70mb) - it appears that when touchdown's data file gets very large, the message appears more often (looks likes there is a bug in Android with large data-sets). I cleared touchdown's data and resynced which shrunk the data file to ~12mb. I reinstalled all the apps I removed to try and eliminate the memory error and so far have been running smoothly.
When I have some time, I am going to try another ROM and see if I can restore without any storage issues. I still am curious how everyone resets their settings from ROM to ROM (or do they manually configure everything each time)
After poking around in astro file manager, contacts(cross-linked mess), and uninstalling some rarely used programs all to no avail......
I fixed my "low on program memory" notification by emptying my deleted items in the mail app- a hotmail account that is rarely used.

To be on the safe side, just reinstall only apps, with or without data. There is no real point in wiping days, and yet reinstalling system apps and data. Kind of defeats the purpose. And yes, manually add accounts. Takes more time, but minimizes conflicts. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes, which is a small price to pay to eliminate potential headaches.

I've run into this as well. In fact it was the original reason I decided to move forward with rooting my phone since I had to wipe it anyway. Has anyone looked into what program monitors this and flags the error? Is memory not being reported correctly, or is there a tolerance that maybe we need to tweak in the code somewhere?

I was just trying out a few ROMs, and after flashing CyanogenMod (The stable release, can't remember the exact name) and then doing a full wipe and restoring my LeeDroid Nandroid backup, I ran into a bit of a kerfuffle...
After booting up, I was greeted with blank homescreens - which was a bit annoying, but nothing too bad - and so went to get started on repopulating them.. only to find hardly any apps were present. I put this down to some of them not having synced yet, until I noticed that even system apps were missing; Market, Music etc - not a single downloaded/sideloaded app is present. They appear under the "Manage Applications" section of the Settings menu but only Data and Cache are present, not the Application themselves.
I reflashed the Nandroid backup again (and again), and was met with the same, only Astro File Manager had miraculously appeared so I could at least install some apps from my SD Card using that. So after installing the Market and Root Explorer from there, I could see that the System Apps were infact there, but required manual installation. I can't even re-download all of the lost Apps, as even attempting to select one in the Market leads to a force close.
I can effectively do nothing, except use the tiny array of Apps that are actually there, which at least does include Messaging and Phone. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this, or a partial-solution at least?

Ok, just as I finished typing this the Factory Reset finished and everything loaded. It seems everything is working now, but still, I'm just left with System Apps and with no sign of my other apps syncing/downloading.
After the wipe factory reset did you do nandroid install again straight after?

Yeah, and the same happened again. I tried various nandroids from all sorts of ROMs, and I would just get the same, even restoring the Stock ROM.
That said, the thread may as well be closed, I just went and did everything manually and everything's fine now. It took many hours, but it's in a usable state now.
i expect u will face the same problem soon as long as ur apps list will grow and be installed on ur device, this is a big issue i faced and still experimenting to get the best solution for, but currently the most effective cure is to mount ur sd card to a card reader, and go to the folder android_secure, cut some bunch of files ther(maybe half of them) and past to ur desktop, mount back the sd to ur device, ur phone will bahave normally now, this will work great after ur nandroid backup, when u see it work, try again the previous step and start to add files to android_secure folder from ur desktop, untill the bad behaviors start to occur.

hi, i need help restoring my backup in cwm 3.0.2.8.
The system partition restores fine but none of my apps or anything get restored. I've tried different versions of cwm and none of them have worked. I know i can just restore my apps with my backup or titanium but i shouldnt have to and i forgot to before i made the backup.
It doesnt even restore any if my contacts, texts, etc. It seems like its just restoring the rom with what ever mods and tweaks i had applied. This has happened with multiple roms so i reckon its a fault with cwm. Also when restoring just the data in cwm it doesnt say "Restore complete!"

How are you restoring your ROMs?
Your contacts should be backed up with your Google account.
They are backed up but cwm should restore everything. After i restore it asks me to login to my google account, select my time-zone, etc.
Im restoring from recovery.
It seems like cwm is crashing while restoring my data partition because the screen goes black whilst still showing the rom manager icon and it goes back to the inital screen of recovery like i just booted into it.
Have you checked your SDcard for errors?
There are hundreds of people who use ClockworkMod Recovery without issue. (excusing 3.0.2.5)
Could be something as simple as a couple of bad sectors on your card.
I recently formatted it before i made the backup, how would i check for any more errors?

I tried the russian one but i got access denied so im doing the windows method. If none of this works, is there a way to manually extract the files from the .img file? I mainly want the data from my apps because i hav around 300

It worked fine, that was connected via USB cable with the card mounted as a drive.
No problems which I'm pretty pleased with, now just to transfer my data back.

I have. The only reason I flashed .2.8 was because of this problem. I have to send my phone to HTC on monday for repair so when I get I back (20 days later) Il start again from fresh. For now I'm gonna unroot and s-on etc etc... I hate sense.

Off topic, I point blank refused to wait 21 days + for a repair. After some wrangling got an exchange. Sadly the exchange handset had severe case misalignment issues. Refused that also.
Yes your backup will still work. It doesn't matter what handset you use. The backup isn't tied to it.
Haha the speaker for calls doesn't work anymore so i hav to send it back. 20 days is gnna seem like forever lol. I'm gnna hav to look for my Nokia 3310. It's like 10 years old and its never failed me once.
As for my back up, when I do get my phone back i need to go through my apps and delete what I don't want.....or I could buy a bigger mem card and setup A2SD. Is there no way to browse inside the data.img file from the backup?
All of a sudden a couple days ago, Gmail on my rooted Incredible (running CM 7.1 and incredikernel) began acting sluggish, syncing poorly, and force closing. Soon thereafter I got a message reading Google Services Framework was not responding, followed by FCs of pretty much every app I tried to open: maps, market, voice, etc.
It happened once before due to an issue with Google Music sync. Turning that off, waiting a day or two, and resuming sync did the trick. This time I'm seeing sync errors with Gmail (on each of the 2 accounts I have set up), Contacts, and Music. All at different times. And nothing seems to solve the problem
I've tried seemingly everything to no avail.
Thus far I've: wiped Dalvik cache, wiped cache, rolled back to an old Nandroid backup, reinstalled CM 7.1, reinstalled GApps, reinstalled GMail app from the market, wiped all data and cache from Gmail/Google Services/Contacts/Contacts Storage/Calendar/Calendar Storage, and ultimately did a full factory reset through Recovery.
After reinstalling CM 7.1 + GApps last night, things seemed to be OK, but I'm back to everything FC'ing today. If I have sync turned off, I can use the phone. But even then, my wifi/radio icons in the status bar are permanently white.
Any ideas? I don't seem to have any corrupt contacts. And setting up a one-time sync of each Gmail account (including contacts and calendar) didn't seem to be any harm. Only thing I can think is if my Titanium back up had something corrupt in it. I did restore that (apps only, no system data) after factory reset.

Is it possible to determine which files backed up through Titanium might be causing the issue (or otherwise try to prevent against this down the road)? Alternately, after a full wipe/restore through Nandroid, is it possible to restore individual apps from a batch Titanium back up?
I know it seems to be specific to Incredibles that the typical wipe of calendar/contacts/gmail doesn't get rid of Google Services Framework FCs... so hoping to be sure all bases are covered.

Yes, you "can" restore apps in titanium but have to be careful. It seems like most people don't have problems restoring just apps. Some are even OK with app+app data. Its NOT recommended to restore system data, especially if you're going from sense to AOSP or vice versa. Personally, I redownload my apps fresh from the market, using the automated Google restore or the web market, which you can download apps straight to your phone from. I've never run into any problems doing it this way.
Sounds like my GFs problem too, except the FC'ing happens once and a while and I have to format the whole phone to fix it.
My Incredible with CM7 is having the same problems
I was using an older CM7 nightly which had been stable for several months.
Out of the blue, all my google apps start crashing, as well as the framework.
Force closes EVERYWHERE.
I loaded the latest nightly, and rebooted. Same problem.
Had some trouble with Titanium Backup destroying the functionality of my home button along the way... so I started from scratch (as much as possible):
Wiped the Delvik Cache, Formatted the Cache, Wiped the Data.
Installed newest CM7 and gapps from cyanogenmod.
Ran "Fix Permissions".
Reverted back to the included ADW.Launcher instead of the paid version I previously had.
Manually installed a skeleton set of apps, and used titanium backup only to restore data on a handful of apps that really needed it.
It was stable for a day, then the same force close issues with all my google apps and the google framework.
Rebooting the phone seems to help temporarily, but I hate having to reboot my phone twice a day.
I've been updating to new nightlies every day now, hoping that one of them will finally fix this problem.
Do I need to flash a new radio, perhaps?

When you do a fresh install, wipe system and boot as well data/factory reset. Also, try downloading and installing apps from market, not titanium (restore nothing from titanium). Your radio should be a 2.15 series, but also shouldn't cause this.
Found this thread looking for my answer and found a solution somewhere else, just as an FYI here:
The strange thing is, I'm NOT out of space. My SD card and internal memory have plenty of room. Then I remembered: The Incredible only has about 300 MB of application storage partitioned. Cyanogen seems to work around this problem, EXCEPT for apps from the Marketplace. They will still say there is not enough space. Other install sources (raw apk, amazon, etc), work just fine.
I remembered that I installed Peggle from Amazon yesterday, which was an 80 MB download. I also remembered I couldn't re-install Angry Birds that day because the Market said I was out of space.
So! I uninstalled Peggle and a couple more large apps I don't need, turned all my syncing back on, no DB I/O errors in LogCat, no force closes, no nothing!
So here's my diagnosis:
-HTC Incredible only partitions ~300 MB for applications+data
-Cyanogen lets users install MORE than 300 MB of applications+data
-Android services (such as market and sync) don't understand Cyanogen is doing
-Android services fail gracefully (like market), or not so gracefully (like Sync) when you are out of 'storage'.
-Making sure you have some "free" space in your /data/data/ folder (I have about 30 MB) causes these force closes to stop.

Hi all. Have been searching round, but can't find a solution to this...
Basically I've had my desire nearly two years, and only ever flashed one ROM until yesterday (Was an old Froyo LeeDroid). I got a new 32GB card, and messed round last night messing everything up, losing me settings, etc. Reset, formatted, and got MildWild (Oxygen) installed in the end. I also S-OFF'd for the first time using AlphaRev, and it's AMAZING!
I installed a load of apps this morning via market, and because of last nights problems (basically I messed up my rom before doing titanium, and my CWM recovery didn't work properly, and couldn't get back to it), I thought right better backup properly this time (purchached TB, etc). I just did a full CWM backup, rebooted the phone, and most of my peronally installed apps have gone! Weirdly a few are still there (Coin dozer, etc). But 3G Watchdog, TiBa, Whatsapp, K9 Mail, and many others I can't remember etc have all gone... Actually it's only the TiBa ones that are there.... I defo did a backup and not a restore (as I only have ONE backup, dated 21-0-2012.1316, 20 mins ago).
I'm not an expert, but I also have some knowledge of Linux, and what I'm doing. Any help, etc please. Where should i be looking for the APK's. Could this be something to do with A2SD (I made a 28/4GB vFAT/ext4 partition before installing the ROM). Please help, I want to cry now after last nights problems, and now this....
Just to add (might help). It's definately not a restore I did, as the shortcuts for all the apps I added to the launcher are still there AND SHOWING ICONS. So Whats App/Facebook, etc all there showing icons... Just clicking them says "Application is not installed on your phone". In the past when I had SD Card problems (I did with the old one hence buying a new one), the icons didn't show the proper icons (although I guess this could be cached icons, etc...) They just not there in the App Launcher
Could it be that all the apps are gone, which were stored on Your SD-card?
Done a little mroe diggint (with QtADB), and I see that all the apps have their settings fine in /data/data/ but can't the APKs anywhere for the missing ones. I also installed a different dialier last night, and that's gone. I did the coin dozers this morning (they're ALL still there), and all other apps have done. the /sd-ext/app and /sd-ext/app-private/ folders are entirely empty...

But shouldn't the coin dozer ones be on the /sd-ext/app partition? I see the coin dozer apps in /mnt/asec/com.gamecircus.CoinDozerHalloween-1/pkg.apk in there...
It does seem the /sd-ext/app and app-private have been wiped. Is this a known CWM problem?! (Versions in signature). I can't believe this the backup software removing all your apps?!
OK I've read a little more (specifically with the ROM pages), and noticed it recommends CM7r2 HBOOT. I'm using the AlphaRev one (not sure what one that is TBH!) I guess I just get the CM7r2 one from the alpharev site, and flash with the bootloader commander program? This changes partition sizes does it? I guess I'll need to re-install the ROM again if I change the HBOOT, or do NANDROID backup. But why would this wipe data stored on the sdcard (mounted as /sd-ext). Also just another quick question, seems I formatted to ext2 (and not ext3 or 4), does this matter, and which is better?
I dont mind having to re-install all my apps again, but I don't want them to dissapear next time I backup/reboot the phone!

Just as an update. I did another backup, flashed the cr7r2 HBoot, formatted the NAND parts, and restored. Installed all my apps again, and backedup, etc, and touch wood everything seems OK. Strange that as the Stock AR HBOOT I had seems to have plenty of space for what I wanted. Still they recommended it, funny how you can sometimes miss small things. Touch wood I don't run into any more problems!
