[Q] T-Mobile My Account app device recognition on CM7 - G2 and Desire Z Themes and Apps

So I am not sure if anyone has posted or done this yet, but when on CM7, the model number of our phone is changed to HTC Vision instead of T-Mobile G2. With this change, we are not able to take full functionality of the T-Mobile My Account app. It says you are using a non T-Mobile device.
To change this. Open up the build.prop file and edit the following in a text editor.
Change this...
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=vision
To this...
ro.product.model=T-Mobile G2
ro.product.brand=T-Mobile
After doing so, save and exit, or save and place back in the /system folder if you edited on your computer
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA Premium App

A reboot is needed for the changes to happen. But it gave me full use of the My Account/My Device app from T-Mobile.

thanks i was wondering about this a couple weeks ago lol

Yeah, I know nothing about coding and all that stuff, pretty much know just what to do when I read instructions.. lol..
but this issue had been bugging me so I decided to just look around and when I looked in the build.prop file I saw where it said HTC Vision, decided to change it to T-Mobile G2 to see if it would do anything, and wala, it did. lol.
did it work for you?

Thanks, wondering about this as well. Running CM6.1.1, I just needed to change the model.

you're welcome! glad I could be of help!

Thanks for this, it does indeed improve a few issues.
Edit: After using this and rebooting, Swype complained that I'm using it from a different device than intended, and that it will operate with limited functionality.
Just letting you guys know in case the issue comes up for you as well.

So after finding the file, I changed it, editing with two different apps, and each time I went to save, I got an "error trying to save" for both apps. I did a reboot, and also attempted with Myaccount installed and uinstalled.
What could be causing the error?
What would be the process using the PC? ADB?

Basically you need to do it from your phone. I use root explorer.
Navigate to the /system folder
Mount r/w (up in the right hand corner of root explorer)
Long press on the build.prop file
Scroll down to Open in Text Editor
Once in the text editor, find and change those 2 lines.
Hit menu > save & exit
Then reboot your phone

If you have root explorer you can edit it straight from the phone.(reboot required afterwards)
I downlaod the CM nightlies to my pc then edit the build.prop as well as add in/change some system apps(swype and the swype lib file, quick office, and an older email.apk that doesn't require pin lockscreen on exchange) then move to the phone and flash.

I did from the phone before. I have just been reluctant to purchasing Root Explorer. I finally did after reading your post, if it didnt work return within 15, but it worked. I am now keeping it.
The two other apps claimed SU, but none actually asked for permission. This is what was the issue.
Thanks for the help.

I actually prefer SU File Manager & Terminal.
It's $1.99 and does zip support, file browsing, /system remount, multi-select, built-in Terminal(!), PC explorer over WiFi (which Root Explorer doesn't even have - and Root Explorer costs ~$3 more!)
Plus it's made by someone here at XDA so I appreciate it even more
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.protocol.x.su.fbs&feature=search_result
That's the link if you want to check it out. It came as a no-brainer to me to buy that instead of Root Explorer because it has more features AND has a less expensive price tag.
Please excuse my somewhat off-topicness, just trying to help out though
Edit: Also ON-TOPIC, I got my build.prop working with Swype by editing it from SU FBS (the app I mentioned above) and by only editing the ro.product.model like jojeda64 said.

I know this thread is a little dated, but just an update. When I changed both lines, Swype stopped working and threw an error. I changed the brand value back and both Swype worked and the T-Mobile "My Device" app did as well. The correct brand value for me was "tmobile".
Hope this is helpful. Thanks to the OP for starting this thread. Answered a question I had.
EDIT: Oops. Missed that Proxin basically said the same thing I did

When I did this on my device it now wont connect to mobile data...

Never used this app before. I'm not sure what to do to save the changes using it? Is it possible you could post how using this app?
Update, a friend sent did it for me. So all is good!

I have no problems using the T-Mobile My Account app with the default CM7 build.prop, everything shows up as it should. My gripe with the My Account app is that it doesn't work over Wi-Fi.

Thanks for the tip on SU File Manager. I love Root Explorer, but it lacks support for Windows/SMB shares, which is kind of a hassle. Currently I use ES File Explorer for share browsing and Root Explorer for everything else. I'll have to look into SU File Manager though.

The my account app works. We know that. But the other part of that app, the my device part, doesnt

Is there a way to customize the stock messaging app?

Nothing more to add besides the title. I have a black, gray, aqua theme going and I'm tired of chompsms screwing things up and handscent sucking period. The stock messaging app is white and I can't figure out how to change it. Any ideas?

See if you can push the Mms.apk from CyanogenMod. You can make it have a black background with white text and many other things.
This is going to sound like a newbie question, but how would I do that? I've pushed apks before via file manager, but never one that was from a rom.

I haven't tried it, but...
go to settings/applications and check "unknown sources" to allow software from outside the market.
get a rom that has the apk you want, rename the rom to .zip, unzip it, and pull the apk from system/app. Put it on your sdcard and install via file manager.

I got all the way up to the install park. Apparently it's the same apk as the regular messaging app (except the ability to customize it, of course) so when I got to the installation screen it asked me if I wanted to browse the apk or "uninstall". I tried uninstall so I could install the modded one, to no success (it is a baked in app).
I guess I'll have to wait til I decide to root (which really means, when a stable CM rom comes out).
Try Handcent. Its in the market..free and pretty cool.

Chomp is more stable, less laggy and consumes less battery life. My only issue with it is that whenever someone sends me a picture, it keeps bringing up the same picture someone sent me over a month ago. It sucks, but oh well. Until root, I'm sticking with it.

It might work if it had a higher version number or a different java name... sounds like a little project for the EZ Bake oven.
or you could root your phone.
Sent from my CyanogenMod Vision
Wait, did you say your phone wasnt't rooted? If not then there is nothing you can do because its a /system app, and to modify /system files you need root.
If you do have root, you can save the cm apk to your desktop and use
"adb remount
Adb push C:/Users/(name) /Desktop/Mms. apk /system/app/Mms. apk"
From a command prompt. Otherwise you can use a root file explorer to copy the app into the /system/app directory.

if you have a text editer app you can copy it to sdcard edit it and then copy it back to the origonal folder.
some examples Ted; Openoffice; notepad (the app) and many other available on market
Just use a file explorer (I like root explorer) and you can mount /system as r/w. Just long press the file and edit in text viewer. Root explorer even saves the original with a .bak.

+1. Root explorer is the way to go. It's worth the few bucks, IMO. I use it for SO MANY things, I'd go bonkers without it.
Thanks, so far I'm managing using ghost, but I may bite the bullet and get root explorer. For this edit job though I was able to use ghost to copy the file th the card, edit it, and copy back. It didn't change the buttons in the notification bar tho. Either Miks uses a different file or the lockscreen mod I flashed causes the buttons to be independent of that file. Not sure which... have to do some more reading I guess lol it never ends.

I've never used ghost before, but I used Miks for a while, and successfully changed the pulldown notifications by adding a widget.txt to system/customize. I'm not sure about with ghost, but I know that with Root Explorer, you need to be sure that the Permissions are set correctly, there are two boxes that you need to check. It didn't work for me on Mik's Rom until I changed those permissions. You may need to do the same using ghost, but I'm not sure how, as I've never used that.
Yep that's exactly what I had to do too. I didn't realize user read permission was unchecked. After fixing that I'm all set.

Nice, glad you got it all ironed out.
What can be edited???
Hey I was just wondering if the colors can be edited here as well??? I originally edited mine with root explorer (if you copy and paste back all you have to do to get it to work is reboot btw) same if you just modify it but i suppose setting permissions is all that the reboot does for it anyhow...
Let me be a little more detailed maybe someone can push me towards a different post or what not. I am using B-Rom 1.3 on Samsung Intercept DL05 the power widget is white on the notification bar... I want it black with green icons and im trying to figure this out but as now i cant even figure out how to get rid of the widget. i was going to use widgetsoid I hear that does the job but with the widget already there widgetsoid was worthless... so i thought since i made changes to which widgets there are on the screen using the system/customize/widget.txt maybe i could change the colors from here... Hmmm??? Any ideas thoughts or advice would be helpful... Yes I know Im a noob but im not completely illiterate here... Just having a rough time searching for an answer so thanks in advance for any help on this idea...

The referenced Android Police article involves a change to build.prop to make the phone report itself as an HTC G2. Considering that the Epic and Nexus S are both Galaxy S variants on Sprint with 4G, I am curious as to whether it would be preferable to use:
ro.product.model=Nexus S 4G
ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
just tried the Nexus S. get device not supported and app crashes on login.
edit: HTC Vision no longer gives me device not supported. but app still crashes on login.
also: swype refuses to swipe words with the build.prop change. can any one else confirm?
The very first release never crashed but since the first update it's never worked.
It might just be the rom though.

I had copied build.prop to the SD card, edited in a terminal emulator using vi, used some command line magic to copy it to the system folder, then rebooted the phone. After starting the Netflix app, it notified me that this phone was unsupported, then force closed after a login attempt.
Interesting they made the app for the evo over the epic at the very least released both at the same time collectively aren't there more galxy s devices over the evo...
first modify /system/build.prop
replace the like values with the below
Code:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
**** ro.build.fingerprint=sprint/htc_supersonic/supersonic/supersonic:2.2/FRF91/252548:user/release-keys
only add this line and comment ou the other if you dont already have the apk
then reboot the phone and go to market and install netflix.
do NOT load it.
once installed open up adb shell and as root
Code:
cd /data/data/com.netflix.mediaclient/lib/
cp libnetflix_device1.so libnetflix_device1.so.bak
cp libnetflix_device2.so libnetflix_devicex.so
cp libnetflix_device2.so libnetflix_device1.so
you will now be able to sign into netflix, view whats available and manage your queue.
but cant watch movies, in most of the ec05 and eb13's that we have it gives an issues with being unable to enumerate OMX device drm.play
if you install stock odin EC05(just the raw stock flash with nothing done) it will say that it throws an java exception and will just freeze lock
if you flash ED12 it works perfectly out of the box(but ed12 has issues)
Still working on it.
PS the above build.prop edit works for the nook colour and viewsonic Gtab and a host of other CM7 based devices as well.
All of the above is completely unnecessary if all you want to do is open the app and view your queue. It will do that without modification.
not on the epic it wont.
itll tell you first that its not in the market
then itll tell you its not for this phone
then itll just exit out to homescreen once you login.
Deja vu...

Fix Force Closes + SPEED

One thing problem that many of us have with ROMS for our device is the constant force closes. As I was searching through the Asus transformer Pad Infinity forums, I came across a Memory management mod, which tweaks the heck out of the memory management, which in turn gives better multitasking, no force closes (I have only tried in on paranoid) and a bit better battery life since apps are not constantly hugging the ram. (I have now tried it on HO!NO!’s port of The Unicorn Rom (Sorry I forget the name) and I have noticed the speed difference.
** FOLLOW ALL ON SCREEN INSTRUCTIONS. PAY ATTENTION AS IT REQUIRES DIFFERENT INPUTS FROM YOU. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN ACTIVE INTERNET CONNECTION.
***THANKS TO zeppelinrox FOR BRINGING THIS TO THE ANDROID COMMUNITY AND THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT HAS HELPED HIM OUT AND KEEP ON THANKING FOR THE CONSTANT WORK ON IT.

+ Make sure you only have one launcher installed. It optimizes that launcher with the memory for maximum speed and stability
*Go to the Play Store and download SManager, which installs script files. If you cannot download it from Play Store, then side load it.
*Download the "SuperCharger_Starter_Kit_RC9.zip" (no its not flash able. you have to extract it)
*Once it is downloaded, and extracted, given if you are in a computer, put the extracted folder onto your SD card. (If you are doing it on a phone, download the file from the link and extract it with your program of reference. I use Root Explorer)
*Then download “V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-Update9_RC10.sh.pdf” –This is not an actual PDF file. Do not open it with your PDF software as it will not work.
Put that file in the root of your SD card.
Go to SManager and look for the SuperCharger Starter Kit File. Once located, tap on StartMeUp.sh. A window should pop up and at the top it says Run. Before you hit the run button, make sure that SU Skull turns green. (Achieve green skull by tapping the skull)
Follow on screen instructions. It will show everything that it’s doing in text format. When it is done, you will notice.
Now go back and search for “V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-Update9_RC10.sh.pdf” using SManagaer and again, make sure the skull is green before running the script.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO HIT THE THANKS BUTTON UNDER ME IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BUT DEFINITELY DO IT FOR zeppelinrox!
IF you still don’t get my instructions, there are videos on YouTube
Good find. About to try this out.

Installed it a few hours ago and it's running like a dream. I've got a few questions though... So I am running trebuchet on aopk milestone 6, from what I could understand from reading the script (which honestly is not much ) is that for me to get the launcher tweaks I may need to do some additional steps? I may have just read it wrong, also should I run ''su'' ''sclean'' in the terminal every couple of days? Thanks and sorry... I'm not too savy with all of this so bear with me. Great find though!

I'm not sure but if you look at the original thread where everything is, they say to follow post number 2 for ics and jb.

[HOW TO] Entitlement check for Unlimited Data VZW M Users

Okay all, just trying to help out.
G/F has the M and it's rather flaky with FoxFi and getting tether to work. Therefore to help some out, buy SQLite (original RAZR and MAXX owners should be familiar with this) from the Play Store.
The path will be "data/user/0/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases"
So select data > user > 0 > com.motorola.android.providers.settings > databases > settings.db > settings
After selecting settings a list will pop up. You can do one of two things. Tap the magnifying glass and type "entitlement_check" and search for that, or scroll down to line 68 (yours may be a different line) and select it.
Tap the pencil icon.
You will see a new screen that has _id "auto", name "entitlement_check", and value "1". Change the "1" to a "0".
Hit save.
You should now be able to use the stock VZW hotspot app.
(This is on stock rooted ICS, not sure if this works on the Jellybean leak, but should tide us over til some custom roms get rolling that bypass this altogether.)
This worked great on the JB update, thanks! I did need to reboot after making changes to have it take effect, but otherwise, worked great. I was able to do both WiFi hotspot and Bluetooth tethering.
Interestingly I don't need to do this to enable the hotspot even though I don't have unlimited data. Are you sure it's even required anymore?

Unfortunately for unlimited data users it is required. We don't get free tethering as tiered data users do.
Thanks seems to work fine.
worked like a charm thanks!
Used it to upload several movie files to my dropbox lol. 20mbps up is so amazing vs 2mbps on home wifi. Uploaded a video to youtube too. Unlimited data, gonna stick it to the man!
*edit* I'm on the Jelly Bean leak.
Thanks!! This worked perfectly on the JB OTA. Made the changes, reboot and BOOM. Testing the tethering right now...
Glad its working for you guys. My Dev M should be here tomorrow. So I'm excited to be in this neck of the woods for a while now. As others have confirmed...this does work on the JB OTA. :good:
What am I doing wrong
Excuse my ignorance but I seem to be falling short here... what exactly are you guys doing? From inside the SQLite manager I'm selecting "data" but there is no "user" after that! Also checked Astro File Manager. Please help

Guessing you're not at the root directory maybe? Do you have root explorer? Haven't used Astro since my old phone no Gingerbread so not sure if it has root access.
Motoman, sorry bud, was at work and just got home. Got your PMs bro. :good:
Okay is your M rooted? If so then SQLite should find the root directory. (Going to come back and edit this in a minute)
ETA:
Okay in SQLite there are four tabs at the top. APPS, FILES, BOOKMARKS, RECENT
Hit the FILES tab.
Then scroll down to "data" folder and select it. Your "user" folder should be all the way at the bottom after selecting "data"
rooted on JB OTA. Worked perfectly after a reboot! Thanks
Welp thanks to tethering and the awesomeness of LTE uploading I have used an ass load of data. I uploaded some music and TV shows to my dropbox for some friends.

Sorry to jump into old thread but considering a RAZR M for my wife but need to be able to do wifi tether. Currently on old unlimited alltel plan on Verizon. Is regular consumer M able to be rooted?
Then wifi tether is still an entitlement change with SQL lite? Or do I news to buy development version of the M?

You'll be fine on retail version. I have a dev m and gf has retail m. I used her phone to do this how to. We're both unlimited users also.

Is there any way to do this without rooting the phone?
Man wish I had unlimited!
