Fixing scratches on the epic ? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to fix scratches on the epic. I don't have warranty and I can't be without my phone for long, as I use it for work everyday. I got some light scratches near the middle of the screen. I have been searching around and a lot of people have tried polishing chemicals, but I'm worried about removing the oleophobic coating on the screen.
Thanks in advance for any help.

There isn't an oleophobic coating on the screen, but there is no way to get the scratches out without making dozens of little ones, let this serve as your reason to get a screen protector to hide the existing ones and prevent any more.

Yeah you really can't remove scratches from the screen. Trying to use any sort of compound or buffing agent will only make things worse. I recommend what the guy before me said. Try an invisible shield. If it scratches aren't too bad you will either not notice them or they will be less vissable.

rubbing screen too much

As you all must know by now, the desire is a monster fingerprint magnet and from this I tend to wipe my screen a lot, most times on my jeans as its a bit quicker lol, my question is does this extensive rubbing damage the touch screen in any way?

Yes and no.
Yes, because you might get scratches etc.
No, because it won't affect how good the 'touch' of the touchscreen keeps working.
So it will mostly be an aesthetics issue
Get a decent screen protector on it to eliminate any worries. I'm one of those who also like to clean the screen.
There is a thread asking about oleophobic protectors, which would be ideal, but apart from the anti-glare ones, there doest seem to be any available.
From what I understand about oleophobic screen protectors it's that they are only oleophobic if they are made out of a polymer that contains some form of a silicone compound.
Finding something that specialised probably isn't going to be easy though.

I have a protective case for my Desire, so that should keep it safe from scratches from other stuff in my pocket. I've been considering getting a screen protecter, but...what's the point again? If it gets scratched (which will surely happen more quickly, because they're plastic) then I'll want to get another one, and they can be a pain to remove.

I'd rather have a scratched piece of cheap plastic than a scratched ~€500 phone.

Obviously, but the screen is glass and the protectors are plastic. So it would very easily get a minor scratch on the plastic which I'd then need to replace, whereas the glass wouldn't have got damaged at all. I've never used a protector - do they come off easily or is it a pain in the a*** (I've heard on some phones about protectors you can't actually ever remove, which would seem to just make it more likely that your phone will display a scratch!)
You need to get the type of protector doesn't use glue to stick. Then they come off very easily when you pull up from a corner. e.g. the Brando ones you can pull off, wash and put on again (although I have never ever washed a protector once it was on lol ).
Quite some cheap e-bay protectors work like this as well.
Never got a protector with glue now I think about it. That's just wrong!

Depends really, cheap protectors do get scratched easily but anything over about £5 is generally fairly scratch proof.
All the ones i've had have been very easy to install and remove.

Do Solvent resistant screen protectors exist?

So I work around many different kinds of solvents and chemicals (acetone, ethyl acetate, hexane, benzene, ether, dichloromethane, etc) and I would like to know if there are any screen protectors to protect against solvent? If anything it would be me touching the screen with a drop on my finger, hopefully no spills.
I had the giant otterbox but it was too huge, I dont really want to use it only when i'm working, it was going to be for trips, etc.
I use a TPU case to cover the back.
I suppose I could see what each protector is made from and determine how resistant it is.
Does anyone know how resistant the screen is by itself? Its entirely possible the screen protector could melt/dissolve onto the screen after coming into contact with solvent, making it even worse.
I try not to use it while i'm dealing with the solvents but sometimes I have to.

The screen is going to be more resistant than anything you can put on it. It's glass after all. Unless you work with stuff that can etch glass you should be okay. I'd worry more about the case you have it in and the actual phone body itself. Would suck to permanently weld the case to the phone because the edges melt to the phone's plastic. Pretty sure the Atrix is plastic.
none of those affect glass!
None of those solvents affect glass in the slightest. In fact, we store them in glass containers by protocol. I would worry more about the effects of the solvent on the case or the back cover of the atrix. Those will melt the plastic given enough quantity.

Maybe. More than likely it's pure solvents he's working with, so it would be an infinite molarity, if I recall. I really should know this lol.

im sure theyd mess up the battery cover or the case its in. the phone body is metal not plastic, and even if the screen protector was solvent proof none that i know of cover the ear speaker at top of screen or mic at the bottom of the screen so youd be screwed if you spent alot on a special screen protector only to touch or spill something on the mic or ear piece.
GorillaGlass is glass which is basically resistant to all solvents. It can be attacked by hydrofluoric acid and a few others but not the common petrochemicals you work with.
OTOH all plastics, probably including the phone body itself, get etched, eaten, softened by something or other. If those solvents can contact your phone...do you work in a moon suit or are you also being exposed to them??
If you just use the phone for phone calls, I'd suggest using a BT earpiece and voice commands, and keeping the phone tucked away.
On screen protectors, no one wants to bother the customer by saying what they are really using but I know some are Lexan, which is fairly resistant, and most are something or other else designed to stick better, or be "waterless", etc.
You might try to get some 3M "Solarshield", which is a water-based adhesive on very thin Lexan, used on car and building windows as a clear security "tint". Totally transparent, very chemical resistant, does use a water mist for application. Don't know how well it works with these capacitive screens, but you should be able to try a scrap for free from any installer who deals with it. (Comes off with water mist too, no residue.)
If it works out...let us know.
Anything else and first you'll have to bug the folks to find out just what they are using, most don't want to tell you because their $20 screen protector is really a dime's worth of something else.

Scratched screen

Hi all,
Whilst cleaning my screen I managed to get a scratch on it, must have been a tiny bit of dirt on the cloth Sods law my screen protector has now arrived in the post after the damage has been done. People keep telling me its not too bad which in reallity it isn't but to me it stands out like a sore thumb
Does anyone know how I may be able to remove the scratch without getting the screen replaced? I have read various tips and tricks for different phones/glass but my worry is ill take some coating off of the screen or something and make it look far worse that it already is.
Thanks in advance.
Just clean the screen and install the screenprotector. You will notice a lot less of any scratches through the screenprotectot.

If it was me I'd eBay it and buy a new one could probably make most of the initial purchase cost back.
I have a problem tho lol and yes I really do this (only ever scratched 1 phone tho I'm really paranoid )

I have had visible scratches on phones before and usually you cant see them after you install the screen protector.
Some good quality screen protector can blemish out those scratches somewhat. If not, I'll probably try ebay it off to get most of the capital back if its bothered me and get a new one.
A couple of companies (like XO Skins, for example) advertise that their wet application protectors will "fill in" and so "fix" minor scratches. I have no experience with it (as my protector from them hasn't arrived yet), but the logical sounds reasonable. I'll post if it helps/fixes my minor scratching that mine has...
Oh settle down, it's only a scratch. I have 3 of them. You won't notice it after a while, especially when you put on your screen protector.
If it really bugs you that much, you can always sell it on ebay to reclaim "most of your initial purchase." LoL!!! Most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in my life. Willingly losing hundreds of dollars over a tiny scratch on a mobile phone.
Yeah dude.. XO Skins fills them in. I wont ever try scratching up my screen like they did in this video, but it fills them in.

best way to prevent screen protector peeling

Couldn't find a topic that discussed this, if there is sorry!
I have had several screen protectors currently an InvisiSheild and have had nothing but problems with them. I constantly have the screen protectors peeling off the screen and have used a knife to cut edges into the protector to prevent it from peeling as much.
Was wondering if anyone else had this issue and how they solved it?
Cheers.
I use steinhell screen protectors, never had that problem
We're comin from a pure power source.
I have the invisashield and had the same prob. It sticks like glue but the bottom edge started coming up, from putting it in and out of my pocket. I peeled it up a little and cut the edge off with some scissors and its good now.
Yeah, I've been cutting off bits of this invisishield for some time and its getting to look like swiss cheese. They used to offer the 'free lifetime replacements' however not sure if they still do.
I might need to try the SGP screen protectors, still curious if there are any others as well though. At this point anything is probably better.

I got rid of my screen protector after it got all scratched and ugly haven't replaced it yet and have 0 scratches on my nekkid screen, the evos glass is pretty hard to scratch Ive put it in my pocket with keys and still no scratches yet just don't kick it across gravel or drag it thru sand and it shouldn't scratch very easy, I had the screen protector on since I got it and when I pulled it off I was amazed at how much clearer the screen looked

Get a otter box that's the best so far no scratches either. A bit expensive but saves your phone.
cowboy up
Shame, half the fun is kicking ky phone around in the dirt
Good to hear that my screen probably won't get scratched and the otterbox does not sound too bad.
Comming from the Hero which did manage to get scratched up quite a bit its really good to hear!

I don't suppose there's a way to fix small screen scratches?

No idea how it happened, but I managed to get a small screen scratch. It's pretty minor, not a huge deal, but is there any easy way to fix it? I've seen old "DIY" articles on the subject about using toothpaste to fix it, but that seems a bit odd, and I don't want to go rubbing toothpaste on my phone without fact checking first. Am I just out of luck?
I did the toothpaste method when my Note 2's display had a small scratch because of sand coming in touch with the glass, but nothing happened, so I am not sure whether the toothpaste method has any validity or not, or any method for that matter. I myself spent a whole day on internet trying to find a solution but came up with nothing other than selling the phone LOL.
Might be a good idea to just apply a protective screen now.
I have some minor scratches as well, no idea how it happened as I a very careful and nothing has ever touched my screen besides my finger. I wonder if this gorilla glass is horse ****.

Apparently this revision is better for resisting breaks and less so with scratches. I believe it's gorilla glass 4?
My Moto X Pure didn't scratch half as easy.
I dont think there is but what can keep yours from scratching is use a leather case with a flap it covers your screen. I think most scratches occur when people put their phone in their pocket with the screen being unprotected.
I got mine scratched as well with absolutely nothing in my pocket but my phone. It's kinds of frustrating how a gorilla glass 4 can so easily scratch. And I can guarantee you, I have been no where close to any sand. Bummer.
Had this happen to my note 4. There is no fix.
Basically you just have to wait it out until you stop caring about it
Front and back glass got scratched here just by getting it in and out of my pocket...
I'll try to find some screen protector that will hide them.
