[Q] Flashing themes to Revolution HD ROM - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I rooted my DHD and flashed Revolution HD (2.1) ROM yesterday for the first time!! This site helped massively so thanks to all the devs and posters for the information!! I do have a couple of questions though, please excuse me if these are a bit obvious but until yesterday i had no idea how to even root it!
So i flashed the ROM and rooted fine, then i flashed a custom theme as well from clockwork mod recovery (installed from zip on sdcard). If i want to change the theme to a different custom one do i have to flash it from CWM recovery or can i do it directly from the CWM app??
Also if i now flash a different custom theme will all my user data (apps, settings, media etc.) be preserved?
Basically i like to change my theme quite often but if im going to loose my data everytime then ill have to pick more carefully!
Thanks in advance for your help and thanks again to all the devs and posters for making my DHD even better!!

Welcome on board ARHD user
You flash theme from CWM. Changing themes means giving new look to your phone, so unfortunately you ll have to personalize everything once again. Flashing themes would not remove your data but only your personalized home screen. You can however try mybackup and see if that helps you restore your settings.

Thanks for the reply!! Just flashed a new theme (revolution) and loving it.
One more question though, im trying to flash a different boot screen and animated framework to the theme but its not working
Im putting the zip on my sd card and flashing via CWM as i did with the theme but its not applying for some reason, is there something im missing?? Both the bootscreen and framework are made for the theme by the way!
Thanks

have you replaced the bootanimation.zip file? i do not know if you need to flash the bootanimation. I have flashed splashscreen but not the bootanimation so i do not exactly know. But i m sure if you replace bootanimation.zip file in /system folder it would work.

Thanks again for the reply. For some reason i went back to recovery 2.5.1.3 to flash something else and just tried the boot animation just in case it made a difference and its all working fine now!!
Cheers

Im having the same problem, Im running DHD Revolution Gingerbread beta 3.1 and the boot animations never work. Even if I do replace the bootanimation.zip file. Changed permissions to the zip file too.
Seems there is a difference in opinion on which bootanimation file to replace. I replaced the one in system/customize/resource.
Any ideas?

Gingerbread works completely differently i think. There is script that also needs to be modified to change the boot animation, i dont know what or where im afraid!
I was on gingerbread for a few days (i think it was mike's second beta) and didnt like it much, so im back on froyo leedroid for now. Might change when there is a few more themes about, bugs are all sorted and custom kernels are available!!

Same thing happens to me.
I don't wipe before the theme update and it still gets stuck at the green screen.
it might depend on the theme u are trying to use. post in the theme thread for support from the theme creator. if you are using a theme from the g1 thread, make sure it is for 4.0.2, and not for a previous build. and make sure the theme is meant for cyan's rom and not for another
I thought you couldnt one click root the cyanogen 4.0.2?
I did a one-touch root too and loaded cyan's 4.0.2 and have no problems applying the themes.. i download them from the browser and move them from the sdcard 'download' folder to the main folder and rename it to update.zip (using ASTRO).. and when i boot it to the recovery screen i select the update.zip file and reboot.. reboot takes about 5 mins after applying a theme but i'm good to go

This method works for me, too...I installed the Community Hero Mix theme for CM 4.0.4 with it, and it hung at the Green screen for a few mins before booting up fine.
The trick is to make sure the theme is for the right branch and build of your ROM...that confused the heck out of me for awhile before I figured that out! It might work if its for a different build of CM, but I haven't tried so I'm not sure.
can someone please point me in the right direction on how to install themes? if you install a rom, you have to install a theme on top of it? this is the only thing i'm really not understanding. appreciate the help

Don't 'have' to, but you can... main thing, make sure the theme you are about to flash is compatable with your rom version... good thing is I haven't seen too many (or any for that matter) bricking from a theme flash gone wrong...
1 because you can't brick your phone with adding a theme thats why you haven't and wont. If all fails just root it the "long way" here

Flashing one theme over another

Is this ok to do? I have searched and did not find the answer to this. LOTS of threads here too so sorry if I missed it. Thanks.

Don't see why not... I usually for my own well being flash the cyanogen mod again then the theme over that... idk why just makes me feel better, but pretty sure you can flash one theme over another...
just do a nandroid before hand and try it out.. worst case just restore your nandroid backup...
your not supposed to. flashing the rom then the theme makes it like a new installation type thing stuff lol.. but really its better to just flash the rom. if you go from the theme to theme you could and probably will get some errors from leftover stuff? not sure how it works, just know that the pros have said its best to flash the rom.
I've done it before on Cyanogen Mod. It's not like it will brick you phone or anything, but doesn't be surprised if weird things start happening. Jusr reflash your ROM, it only takes a minute and will make sure everything is flashed correctly.
It depends on whats in the theme most themes use the same template and will overwrite the files from the old theme now if the theme has say stericsons lockscreen and the new one doesn't u def need to flash the rom first or you'll def have problems but its always safer to just flash the rom first to overwrite the old theme just in case the new theme has a different template or different apk's inside
Cool. That's exactly what I thought. Thanks
here's my solution.
Since I started playing with themes....
I flash the Cyanogen (the best!) ROM. - Install all my apps (or restore them).
Then boot into recovery and do a Nandroid backup. (you can manage/copy this backup-file as your 'golden-copy')
Then flash the theme I want and between flashing themes, do a Nandriod restore.
Works so far pretty good!

Depends on the theme. If the original theme has files the new theme does not, the new theme won't overwrite them. An example is the NFL themes, my first updates, I am not touching framework, so if you flash it over another theme, your status bars and some other things will be that of your original theme. If the contain all the files then the second theme should overwrite everything in the first.
I noticed that if I flash a theme over another one that they have been blending together OR that icons and details will switch in and out from one to another. It hasnt affected the phone and I thought I was going crazy but restoring the backup then flashing again solved the problem

It's probably because you didn't wipe. (i call it 'skidding')
Get full-wipe-1.3 zip file & put that on your sd card too.
Run this from recovery before a new rom.
wait what? im tring to find out how to flash a theme?

What do you mean by 'flash a new theme'?
To my knowledge, a 'theme' is just an appearance (layout, wallpaper, icons etc), which doesn't require flashing.
If you're just talking about flashing different roms (that might have a different look from one to the next), then yes, it is advisable that you wipe first.
i mean how do i put this on the phone? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=951768

I see, learn something new everyday.
Appears more to it than actually flashing a rom; a lot to get right, but the instructions seem clear enough.
But, if you're having problems, i'd always advise wiping & start again.
im so lost : /, i wish there was a guide on putting themes

You're flashing roms so i assume you've got s-off etc, & you're using a 2.2.1 (1.72) sense based rom for this theme (+ all the other things you need to do, like uninstalling launcher pro etc)
What i'd do is...
put full-wipe-1.3, the rom (+ gapps if needed) & the theme on your sd card
reboot into recovery via rom manager
Install zip file via sd card
full wipe 1.3
then
the rom
then
gapps (if needed)
then
reboot...
then do all the things needed to allow the theme to work properly
& finally, reboot into recovery via rom manager again
install the theme (zip file from sd card)
reboot...
thanks alot fr the help but i think ill leave it as it is lol :/ ty nyway though
After flashing a rom normally, just reboot, go to clockworkmod again and flash the theme from SD. Just go to install zip from SD. No biggie

[Q] Flashing themes issue

Hello all,
So I'm having a problem flashing a them. I do the backup and the wipes and install it from the sd card fine. Reboot it and all but when the phone comes back on, it stays on the splash screen of the theme. I've let it run for at least an hour, pulled the battery and turned it on again and the same thing. I've tried 2-3 different themes to flash, and just the splash screen comes up and continues to play and that's it. I've tried flashing them again and the same thing. Can someone help me out? Thank you!
What theme are you trying to flash?
-Is it for the rom you're on
-If on CWM 3.0+, is it edify compatible?
-Is the file meant to be flashed from recovery?
I'm trying to flash rEVOlution and the matted blues theme. I'm running on cwm 2.6.0.1. I'm not sure if its edify or wether the themes are compatible with the rom I'm running... how do I check that?
Sorry for the noob questions, I'm still rather new with the whole flashing themes and all.

I would try updating Clockwork and flashing. If that doesn't work, I would try redownloading the theme, maybe you got a corrupt download. Make sure you are flashing a theme meant for that exact ROM (eg. sometimes X theme might only work with version 2, for example, and you're running version 3)

I used rom manager to update cwm and it updated. how do I update flashing? after the cwm update, which now i'm running 3.0.0.5, i tried to flash the theme and it said installation aborted, something about update scripts?
once again, thank you guys for your help! I'm not sure what else to do? sorry for the noob questions, once again.
What theme on what ROM? Are they compatible? If so then I don't know but if you posted your Q in the thread where you got the theme or in the thread for your ROM you'd probably get better answers. Just an idea.

[Q] Call of Duty Modern Warefare ( Boot animation and sound )

Hi there dose anyone know how to get this to work on the Wildfire
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1087745
here is the files on that page
here`s the bootanimation it`s resized for the wildfire res copy the zip to system/media, if you want the sound look at [TUTORIAL]How to make your own boot animations
thanks but that didnt seam to work still got the stock boot animation
make a nandroid backup first then flash the zip from recovery,i thing you need to have s-off on the phone, and the path system/media is for AOSP roms, if you are using sense rom its a different path
do you know the path for the sense Rom as that's what i am using?
I'm using stock Rom only rooted as new to all this.
Chris
/system/customize/resource, here`s the cwm zip for sense roms

Hi there. Let me clarify this a little.
I helped chrisjsy with S-OFFing his phone. He is now rooted. We had to downgrade his HBOOT using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132028 and havent installed a custom ROM since.
He made a nandroid backup (and a titanium backup as well) last night.
Im trying to help him as far as I can, but I can only offer him so much advice as I feel pretty n00b(ish) to android as well.
He is now running out of space on his phone for apps, and Im now wondering if we install link2sd (like I have on my Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro which is on stock firmware (android 2.1)), will that help with matters as I have some apps that under Froyo dont move to SD yet I can move them to SD with that?
Though having said all of that, is there a custom ROM that will speed his phone up with very few bugs?
links2sd is a very good app i used it to move only the apps to ext2 partition, but now i use custom mdt its the best way imo you can check it out here but this works only on aosp roms, if he wants a sense rom then go whit link2sd, best rom for me is cm7 go whit the latest nightly here you can find changelog and download the rom
