I've been having the Sleep of Death for 2 months now it seems. It was a please press button to turn on backlight before on occasion, now its been the full blown SOD for the past month or more. I've tried so much and I'm through dealing with it. It's constant to the point its unusable now. I've given up.
Questions I have are:
1. Does anyone really check to see if I have official Verizon software when I go to the store? Can't I just load Mr. X's non SOD Verizon rom and fool them? It looks official to me. A month before I bought my phone noone even knew what a TP2 was at the AT&T store yet I knew about it for half a year before release.
2. Is there anyway I can get another phone? I can't deal with another Touch Pro 2(or windows mobile phone). The 9 months or so I've had it were fun though. It's just so sloooooow at times and dated now. Can I hope to get a refurb Droid Incredible? I have the 1.99 extended warranty if that helps one bit.
3.I bought it online does that make any difference?
4. I'd like to try tomorrow :\
BTW a friend I know from work had 3 separate issues with 3 Touch Pro 2s and on his third trip to the store he was able to snatch a Droid. So I know it can happen but I'm foggy on the details how
if you a having a problem with your phone and you believe it needs to be replaced under warranty, i recommend you tell them you lost the phone and need a replacement.
well that seems a bit dishonest doesn't it? the reason i say this is to prevent you from being screwed over. from my understanding, the tp2 has different moisture detectors on the device that are not accurate, by some accounts on this forum.
i would hate for my claim to be denied and have to pay for another phone when i know that i didn't get it wet...
Do you mean the little sticker inside above the battery? That says void on it :\ It's said that since day 3 or so and I've never gotten it wet. I knew that was fishy and I read about that on the forum. Wow...thanks for the great help.
That really threw everything off though. I get charged for the replacement dont I? Can I get that replacement at the store or do I have to wait to get one shipped?...so broke right now, and all I want is a working phone ...equal or better than mine lol
Yes verizon will probably check to see if you have official software. Also your rom is causing the SOD issue. I use the stock rom and never have any SOD issues. Your chance of a upgrade to incredible is like 2% since it isn't a comparable phone. Also Verizon require 3 replacements inside of 90 days before they offer you a new phone. Also insurance fraud is not very nice. Return the phone if you get a new one.
I think insurance fraud is a bad idea all around. Plus I don't like reading about it since technically I have to stop the conversation if I think that this is where the conversation is going.
I suggest you get the stock firmware back on your phone, re-lock if if at all possible, go to the store and explain the issue you've been having. As long as the water detection stickers haven't changed, they'll usually replace it without asking too many questions.
I don't think the SOD issue you're having is device-related though. I'm almost 100% positive that it's entirely firmware related and I strongly suggest you go back to the stock ROM/RADIO/SPL and see if the issue is resolved before attempting warranty replacement.
Final note - Try to avoid using the term "Insurance Fraud" from here on out. It's bad practice, violates the forum rules, can get the site in BIG trouble and can get you banned/your thread closed.

So my screen went out on me and they are sending me a new phone, if the screen won't come on at all, I am unable to unroot (some people may be able to do it all through ADB but I am not one of them, unfortunately).
My concern is, once they get this phone mailed back to them, are they going to fix the screen, see it's rooted, and then charge me the fee of like $250? If so, I'd rather just purchase a new phone outright then pay another couple hundred for this one...
Thanks.

Thanks! I sure hope this holds true.
I was running my 3G Slide on Cyanogen 6 Stable (latest) with no problem. Then one day I say artifacts on my screen, I thought there was no problem, as I was playing a game at the time. I assumed it was just a bug in the game. So I kept on using the phone with no problems. About a week later however, the first signs of my current problem surfaced. The face keys died and no longer responded, unless I slided the phone open. The problem just got continually worse from there. It progressed to the point where I could not utilize the touch screen when the phone was open and now it is at a state where the touch screen completely doesn't work either open or closed and the face keys do not work either.
Just to differentiate, the face keys are the home, menu, back, and the google search thing. But the side buttons are all intact.
I've tried rebooting the phone with no success. A memory wipe, resetting Cyanogenmod, failed to solve the problem. I've since then emailed HTC to see if I still have coverage, since I bought it second hand, and reverted back to the original rom, from a thread in the Android Development forum, so I would be covered by warranty.
I at first assumed it was the digitizer, which might still be part of the problem; I still haven't completely ruled it out. But the digitizer alone wouldn't explain the dead keys, would it?
Help? Any suggestions if HTC decides not to repair it or charges a ridiculous price?
I also get the "android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly" message now once I boot up.
It's most likely the flex cable that connects your screen, front buttons, microphone, etc. (everything on the front panel). That would explain the gradual going-out of the touch screen and the artifacts on the LCD. Send it in to t-mobile, the phone has only been out since last June, less than a year, so it's under warranty. Call for a replacement.
Thanks for the advice, MusicMan. I visited a T-Mobile store today, and its no doubt its under warranty. But here's the problem. I didn't buy the phone from a corporate store or an authorized store, I bought it second hand, and T-Mobile, after a visit and numerous calls of begging and pleading and employing moral responsibility, they said they can't replace the phone because the phone is not registered under my name... blah blah blah. Apparently warranty is through person and not transferrable.
What do I do?
Also, a side note.
In the off chance that I have to deal with HTC for my problem, what is the radio of the stock T-Mobile rom?
Just to make sure my phone is "stock" as ever before I send it in.
As of now I have 7.00.35.04S
I assume that the phone is still rooted even though it is back on the stock rom, will that be a problem if I send it back to HTC?

You could try to get a hold of the guy who sold you it. If he calls T-mobile customer care and puts you as a "authorized user" of the phone you can get it replaced.
However, make sure you are on the latest OTA. Check out this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946435 and scroll down to my post for another non over the air update method.
-Current stock ( ota ) radio is 7.09.35.10
- Make sure you don't have superuser. If you replaced your rom with the stock build ( like in the method linked ) you should be fine.
He's currently in Taiwan "for a few months", so I doubt he can help me from there.
Also, I'm pretty sure you have to have proof of purchase when you send it to HTC... So that might be a roadblock as well. Your last option would be to order a new flex cable online and install it yourself. Or you could pay HTC the repair fee to fix it.

Thats why the "owner" of the account calls customer care. They already have the record that he purchased the phone. So if he is put as an "authorized user" of the phone he can send it in. Of course the original owner would have to give t-mobile the shipping address and in sense do it. However it only takes maybe 20 mins? Once his refurbished comes in the mail it comes with either a plastic back or box pre-labeled to send the defective product back in.
Along the lines of have the guy call tmobile.
Hi..my cousin is in the states and is having problems with the tmobile slide..I would like to add him as an authorized user so that he may send it in for a refurbished phone...
tmobile will ask for the # and two other pieces of information...password and something else.
imo worth a shot before you have to spend money!

I've installed the esprimg, but how do I install the extraneous files for radio?

So right now you are unrooted and installed the 1.27.531.1 stock correct? In order to update to the latest OTA make sure you download the zip provided. Both are the same file, but for some reason the one on the google docs worked for me.
-copy the update.zip file to your sd card.
-Turn off your phone then power into fast boot( volume down and the power button)
-go into recovery once fastboot gives you the option.
-Once in recovery just hit "apply update.zip"
-Wait for it to finish installing then reboot.
Edit:
Original Thread for update.zip

Follow the rules in the original thread. Much more detail than I provided!
Enjoy man.
I checked all the settings and anything else that I could think of with a normal never rooted mytouch. All looks perfect...also sent my mytouch back to tmobile doing this. Have yet to hear from them.
It came in the mail today. It came with 2.3.3 pre-installed. It seems from searching on here that no one knows for certain if there will be a root method for this. What I've gathered from the minimal time I have spent searching on here today is I might not ever be able to root this thing. Best case is that someday maybe the devs might get a root method figured out, but no one knows if or when that will happen.
My old phone slipped out of my pocket and took a spill off my bicycle at about 20mph onto a paved road. It works fine, but the glass is shattered. I've had this phone for almost a year. I rooted it the day I brought it home from the store. I have spent a lot of time trying roms and kernels and it is set up just how I like it.
I am wondering if it would be worth it to switch out the glass from the replacement phone and put it on my old phone (I'm not sure if this is possible yet, I just thought of it) and send back the replacement phone with the broken glass from the old phone. Or should I wait and see if the devs release a rooting method? I have 14 days to decide before I get charged $500 for not returning the broken phone to the insurance company. What would you do?
I'm not positive, but I think you can still RUU a 2.3 evo back to the 3.70 software and use Unrevoked from there. Good luck
I would send back the insurance replacement (saving you $100) and take it to a repair center and have the screen fixed (which is only $35). Losing root SUCKS.

There WILL be, just give it a week or two.

That's insurance fraud. Asurion will know what phone you send back, and when they find out, they could easily make you pay the full price for it.

Yeah, that's definitely a criminal act. I wouldn't go that route.
Does everybody have some sort of amnesia that they don't remember when the 2.2 OTA came out and a lot of people lost root? Everybody freaked out, they had to wait a couple of weeks (gasp!) and people were all worried there would never be a root method. Bounties were placed, dozens of threads were started asking the same thing. That's what prompted my signature, in fact. There was even a sticky about it, not that those do any good.
Then, there was a root method.
Just be patient. It will happen, maybe the RUU thing will already work for you. Soon, you'll feel silly for being so quick to worry. Heed the words of Tom Petty.
I just got off the phone with the Sprint repair store. They told me that as of February, they no longer fix cracked screens for $35 if the screen has more that two 1 inch cracks. They also told me that once submitted, the insurance claim cannot be undone. I could have it fixed, but it would cost me the total for repair and the $100 for the insurance claim.
I don't remember when 2.2 came out and everyone lost root. I was still sporting my blackberry. This is my first Android phone and it came with 2.2.
I'm just going to return the broken phone and just wait it out. That is what I planned to do in the first place. The threads I read made it seem like there was a good chance that the ota 2.3 was unrootable.

Yup, that's the same experience I had. I went to TWO Sprint stores trying to replace my screen, no dice. So, I filed the claim with Asurion. Just got my phone today, and it's 2.3.3 with 4.22.651.2. Oh well, what can you do?
As everyone is saying, the root method will come out for this phone. Those with the newer phones (you, me, whoever else either just got a new Evo, did the OTA, or got an insurance replacement) will just have to patiently wait. I don't mind...it'll happen!
I was told by the insurance company that I COULD get the new phone, and have Sprint fix it with the new one.
Sprint was going to do it anyway, and replaced the screen on my wife's phone, but they didn't have any more EVO's in stock.
I have another question but didn't want to start another thread....
When I get my new phone, how can I tell if it's new, or refurbished?

New phones will ALWAYS come in the original box with all manuals and accessories. Refurbs will usually come in a plain box with no battery or anything. Refurbs also are required to have a small sticker under the battery with the date it was refurbed.
Also, to be sure, go to the dialer and hit ##786#. Scroll down to Refurbished Date. If it says N/A, then its new. If there is any date listed there, then its a refurb.
The charging/usb port is bad. I get usb on/off status msgs even when its not connected/.
I odind back to ec05 and ota up to ei22
im about half way through a two year... would have been up for an upgrade had they not split and then eventually kill the premier plan -
will they just try to fix the phone, or will they try to replace it???? what do they normally charge for repairs??? i dont think i have insurance
also before i go should i prep my sd card, remove it to hide all the rom and cwm, and nandroid files
I took my phone in when my capactive buttons weren't working and my screen was flickering badly. I simply made a nandroid backup of my current setup, and copied it to my computer... then I odined back to stock, and wiped my sd, to erase most traces of root.
When I took it in, I had told the tech that I tried to wipe it, in case some app was causing the problem (I knew that wasnt it, but just told him that in case he wondered why my phone was still BONE stock). He didn't care either way, and continued examining it. When he confirmed what I had already told him was wrong, and within 20 minutes he told me to hold on to my phone until they could order me a new one. It was free for me, but of course I have insurance.
I know the situation/insurance is different than in your case, but those are the steps that I took, and I was never questioned at all. Thats the safest thing to do IMO. Once you odin your on a stock sammy rom/firmware and unrooted. The first thing they will try is wiping your phone though, so it's a safe bet to just make a backup and move it to your computer for when you do get your new/fixed phone back. This will make restoring your phone to original order alot easier.
Jmsnyc, I posted a reply to your question at the end of the Legendary ROM thread. They don't usually ever really look what's on your SD card unless you ask them to transfer your files to a new one. Get insurance before you go in over the phone. It's simple to add it to your account. See if there's a time limit before you can use it. With insurance it will be free to you.
They will put your sd card in the replacement as well as your battery...makew sure they do...humans are forgetful. They never look at the sd card because people's private pix are on there. Look at your bill, if there is a charge for TEP you have insurance. I think the warranty is 1 year so if it is under a year and you don't have insurance there is a $35 warranty handling fee.
damn... my phone is just a few days over the year mark
I do not have insurance, I called Sprint and the CSR said he will submit a form to request insurance to be added but it will take up to 48 hours to find out and he thinks it will be denied because the phone is over 6 months old...
I do not think it is even worth it... - phone replacements on smart phones cost $100 coinsurance if its not the fault of the phone, add the $8 a month and it adds up
Wondering if I should even wait for the insurance stuff to go through - I am thinking I should just go to the store today because even if insurance goes through I cant go the next day to the store... I dont mind paying $35 if thats all it will cost, but not sure cuz "just" out of warranty
If they determine it is defective and not user damage they will probably fix it for $35. Depends on the tech.

I think it might be the sd card rather than the port. I pull out the sd card and the usb connected status message that has been going on and off goes away. I will try another sd card before I bring it in plus I will try to connect it again to my pc without the sd card later when I get home.
Update: dropped it off at the store - tech tried another sd card and also same problem - he is changing the card reader and checking the port - charging me $35 plus tax
I have had my replacement phone for over a month and recently it has been shutting down randomly. I can 100% say that this was not software related. I could force it my closing the slider but it would happen on hard movement. I odin'd back to ec05 (from RandomRom) and let it update to EI22 then EI30 and the problem still occurred. I think there is a faulty connection between the battery power and the phone. Note: I tried a couple of different batteries and that did not matter.
I brought into Sprint - I have no insurance but since I paid $35 about a month and half ago I figured I could get them to waive the fee this time.
I left it at the store for an hour for the tech to look at it. They give it back to me after reflashing the phone saying its fixed. I immediately opened and closed the slider to test and of course it shut off. The tech took it back and ended up replacing the whole front piece (with the lcd) and the battery - not sure why he didnt just replace the phone. I have to test it for a few days to see if its good otherwise I will get it replaced.
The good thing is the battery they swapped out for a new one might have been counterfeit (it also might have been real). I bought on Amazon by a 3rd party seller. So at least now I can be confident the battery is oem.
