I was a moron and didn't back up my RSA when I rooted, and now that I realize I need it, it's gone forever. I've already got a new phone on the way, but don't know what my options are with my old phone. I'd like to sell it to recoup some of my money, but without 4G I don't know what my options are.
I know it'll never work on Sprint's WiMax, but are there other options? Could someone buy it and, say, take it to Verizon? Or can I only sell it to someone to use on Sprint? Would its lack of WiMax apply to any carrier, anywhere? Will I have to sell it as a 3G-only phone?
Any thoughts or insights would be more than welcome.
I believe you'd have to sell it as a 3G only phone.
Dang. That's what I was afraid of. I was kinda hoping that maybe going to another carrier might somehow present an opportunity to fix it, but I can't think of how they could. The keys are the keys, regardless of the network.
Think I could get $150 for a 3G-only Evo?
Also - would they be restricted to Sprint, or could they take it to another carrier (and transfer their existing plan onto it)?
Right, since the keys are unique to the phone, but now gone. And I think that is fair...no keys, used, good condition. Still a lot cheaper than buying it out right, so I think you could get it for that price.

I think you could get that price. I see people selling evo's for 150-200 with bad esn's so I can't see it being that hard to sell your evo as 3g only (most people don't have 4g anyway)
Should be able to work on Metro PCS
dont go too low!
I know several people who have payed $300 ish for a bad esn Evo to use on Cricket.
People with cricket could care less about 4g.
Could also be used by devs to make and test ports, for the EVO, of phones that didnt come with 4g.
just sell it on ebay "as is"

I was going to suggest you should try and flash it to work on Cricket but either would work. You could probably get a few hundred for it.
Edit: Just looked on CL in my area and there's a guy trying to sell a Cricket flashed EVO for $350 and another guy looking to buy one for $200 whether or not it has a good ESN. I'm sure you can get at least $250-$300 for it.
I hate threads like this, RSA. I have no clue what RSA is. I got my evo and rooted it, flashed cm7 rc1 within a hour of owning it. Did I do the same thing, not back up RSA? I did nandroid before flashing cm7, so I have a stock image. Not trying to hi-jack the thread here, just trying to get information out there for people like the OP and me. Had he not posted I wouldnt know what RSA was, wait I still dont know what it is, lol.
Thanks
I will pay $150 for your 3G Evo, today. Wife wants one too now that she has played with mine (lol).

If you did a nandroid backup, you should be ok. To be sure, usb mount your SD card on your computer. Go to the nandroid folder and find that backup folder. Open it and you should see a backup file for each partition as "img" files. Find that wimax.img, copy and paste it to a safe location on your computer and you should NEVER have to worry about losing your keys.

For the lawlz, but RSA = WiMax RSA Keys, aka the image so you can have access to 4G. The big problem with losing your RSA keys are that each device has a unique code, so you can't re-create them or just get another one. When its lost...you're outta luck.

I would, but my replacement Evo is still on backorder and I'm not planning on selling the old one until after the new one has been set up. I wanna keep the old one on hand so I can refer back to it to make sure I didn't miss anything when migrating my data. I probably won't be ready to sell my old phone for another week or two.
p.s. Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I think, once I'm finally ready to sell it, I'll list it as a rooted non-Sprint 3G Evo and see if I can get $200-250 for it.
No problem, hopefully you find a buyer.

Take $250 minimum.
I bet if you put it on your local craigslist it will easily fetch that, if not more.
Or you could always put it on virgin mobile and pay some excellent prices
($25/mo is 300 mins & unlim data & texts, $40/mo is 1200 mins & unlim data & texts, $60/mo is unlimited everything. Prepaid for your convenience, same coverage and speeds as Sprint 3G)
Good luck with the sale!
Quick follow-up question:
Checking the Settings -> About -> Status shows my old number still attached to the phone despite a full wipe and confirmation that the phone no longer has service. Is this normal? Will it just stay there until the buyer takes it to their carrier and has it attached to their plan?
I'm assuming yes, but confirmation would be nice. If possible, I'd rather not have any identifying features on the phone when I sell it.

You have to change to an Everything Plan. It won't let you register the ESN online for your account unless you change plans.

If you really want to see, try buying an instinct, Pre/Pixi, hero, moment or BB Curve/Bold online and keep your existing plan. The system will automatically advise you that you MUST switch to a compatable plan to use the device. There is no way that you can add a phone like that on an older plan. The only acceptable plan will be either the Everything Data or the Simply Everything.

Because the plans are tied to the serial numbers. Try to activate a serial number that requires a certain plan, and it WILL change you over.
thanks you for the info. now I have an expensive decision to make
I'd like to piggyback on the OP's question. I already have an everything plan (Hero user). I've seen some good deals on used EVOs (clean esn), and have three questions:
1) How hard is it to activate an EVO from home for use on my existing plan, and
2) Is sprint's device checking specific enough to see that I'm on the Evo instead of a different smartphone and force me into the everything + $10 plan?
3) Assume 1 and 2 work out the way I want, when 4G comes to my market, will sprint be able to see my device using 4G and charge me extra for it?
As a side note, if they decide to pressure me into the +$10 i'll probably go with it anyway, but at this point I'm not in my upgrade window and have no intention of paying full list price for an EVO via the sprint store/Radio Shack. I was planning to buy an evo upon return from my last deployment, but went with Hero because of the arbitrary $10/month, but at this point i'm over it and suffering from chronic evo-envy. Thanks in advance for any useful input.

1) Not hard at all, but you have to call Sprint and give them the info from the new phone. They are going to know it is an Evo right away.
2) Yes; even if you could activate it without calling Sprint, they would know your ESN belongs to an Evo.
3) No; the $10 fee inlcudes 4G access.

Its really easy to activate it at home. I got mine through Amazon about 2 weeks after it debuted and set it up no problem. I think I had to do it over the phone, but its pretty easy. Just follow the instructions after you turn it on.
It does know. When I activated my Evo, it appeared on my Account right away as an Evo and the $10 addon automatically appeared on my next bill.
Since the second one won't work, I guess number three doesn't need an answer. Hope that helps. I had Evo envy after the first time I saw it in a store (the day it came out) Bought it through Amazon for full price and now my fiancé uses my Hero as a wifi hotspot. Definitely worth the switch if you can afford it.
Thanks for the help folks.
I recently found my Evo that I had lost several months ago and had replaced with Insurance from Sprint. It's been deactivated by Sprint and I want it reactivated by Sprint so I can give to my sister. Will they let me do that? Or will they only allow me to have one activated at a time for some stupid corporate-gain reason?
when you report a phone stolen or lost sprint blacklist the ESN preventing anyone from activating it again. This is in place to prevent insurance fraud and dissuade anyone from stealing your phone (more so the former).
I doubt sprint will activate your lost phone on a different account.
Won't hurt to call them and tell them you "found your lost phone" and see where it goes from there.
If you speak to a supervisor and just be totally honest and sincere about what happened, they have the discretion to remove the block...

I thought I read somewhere that Sprint only gives a bad esn if the phone was stolen, not lost.
However, I read it somewhere on xda, and you all know how rumours fly around here. It could also be something that was once true but has since changed.
Honestly, it seems like bad info to me, but it might be something worth looking in to.
If it's in good working order but does have a bad esn, you could sell it and at least get your deductible back.

So what was the outcome? I'm curious as to what sprint did for you.
You should claim lost on your current phone so your brother can have it 2 months later when you do find it.
Once insurance is filed your claimed phone becomes the property of the insuring company. It no longer belongs to you.

You're an ass,you can't just jump to the conclusion that he's lying about losing it and finding. Once again You're an ass.
i want to say it will not work but from experience i would say you should give it a try.
my buddy owns a sprint store with his brother and when evo first came out one of them got. so the other one wanted a evo as well because it was his birthday so his older brother filed a missing claim and turned it off and used a replacement phone for about a month or 2 and when the new phone came in he gave his brother one evo and he kept the other.
he is still using the phone to this day.
its a hassle but it did work (for them atleast)

i could of told you that
Pretty much borked myself out of 4G, I just unrooted my phone back to stock, ready to take it to Sprint tomorrow. Just a few questions before I do so.
Q1: When i first got my evo they gave me one with a broken volume down button, i went back and they replaced it, telling me i can't get a refund now. =_= Does this mean i cant return my current Evo? (2nd one)
Q2: How do i come at them about replacing my phone? Do i say i updated to the most recent OTA and now my 4G doesnt work? or Do i report it stolen or lost? I dont know what to do. I just dont want to end up paying for a brand new one or refurbished one.
Q3: Should i just switch over to Boost mobile and cancel my account with sprint since i dont have 4G anymore? This would be more positive thinking if i cant get a free Evo replacement again.
Q4: Just reassuring myself, Theres no way to create a wimax image using the RSA key info from my RSA_oem.key file? I read some where that you can use the hex editor to change info on a wimax template to work with your phone.
It was dumb of me, i remember it like it was yesterday. I had no 4G connection, but i had my Keys. (not backed up of course) So i figured it was my Wimax/Radio, next i formatted Wimax and lost my keys. (Eternally screwed) Dont EVER do this if you're reading this. First thing I'm gunna do when i get my new Evo is back up my RSA keys.
Do you have insursance on it? If not then your SOL. I had same issue with my 4g and I told them I had been updating my profile and prl (after flashing stock rom) and it dropped and shut off, then after reboot I couldn't get 4g. They took it for testing and I came back and got a new phone. I had insurance
Yes i have insurance thank god. Did they make you pay a deductible? sorry for the late post i had forgotten of this post. I talked to a customer at my local sprint store and he told me i should just pay the 100$ deductible and write it off as damage cuz they'll give me an Evo 3D they're not handing out evos anymore, but i still want to try :3

Sprint store reps won't know if you would be getting a 3D for insurance replacement, you would have to contact Asurion about that. Some people have been getting the 3D, but some have still been getting the OG Evo. All depends on what they have in stock when you make your claim.

quick idea, instead of paying $100 for a replacement thru your insurance for a refurbished phone, you could go onto craigslist and buy a new evo slightly used for the same price thats probably in better condition. Just throwing the idea out there.

You only have to pay a deductible if theatre physical damage. If your wimax is damage just flash a stock rom and when you bring it in say you were updating the prl or profile and it dropped and when you turned it on 4g wasn't working. They will take it for testing then give you a new one.

So I just broke my contract with T-Mobile because I was fed up with them and came over to Sprint. The nice people at the store promised me that I would have service and WiMax at home and at work, but sadly it is not looking great right now.
At home the phone is roaming the whole time, which is ridiculous because that means I am limited to 300mb of data a month and it is slow data at that. At work I have the same problem and don't even get roaming data.
So I was wondering what the recommendation would be here. I've rooted my e4gt but have not torched the modem yet. Is it worth while to try to flash a different modem (EK02 maybe) and see if that helps, knowing that I will not be able to flash back to EG30? Will flashing a different modem be any sort of problem if I try to return the phone?
Or am I completely screwed and have to go crawling back to T-mo?
Thanks,
Actually if you are roaming at home all of the time, Sprint will probably give you a free Airrave. It acts as a mini tower.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
yeah. I've heard that, and its cute. But there is a bigger problem of work, which is where I spend most of my day, and actually class (where I also have only roaming). Actually I have roaming inside almost all buildings even those they are supposed to have excellent service there. Basically, the service all over is starting to really bother me, and if I have to put up with roaming forever I may just have to leave Sprint. The question is more of a, will playing with radios/modems help or will it actually hurt me when I have to return the device?

LOL. If you can find a Sprint employee who is savvy enough to even know what a radio/modem is chances are he will have all the sympathy in the world for you.
That said, if you plan on keeping the device I would not **** with the modem. It's worth a shot, but, that won't help your 4G woes. You can tweak your signal level connect threshold and release timers, but, that'll won't help you get a signal you currently can't get at all...it'll only help you keep a signal you can usually get.
If you are in the 14 day window abort abort abort. You've given it a valiant effort, and that is to be applauded. Sprint service is amazing in some places and almost nonexistent in others. If your only problem is 4G, well, sorry...the tiny little slice of spectrum allotted to Sprint/Clear's WiMax sucks. That will never get better. I gave up on it...thankfully the 3G is getting better every day around here. I thought about going Vzn or Tmob, but, I use too much data for that to be affordable. Especially if it's that much faster. It would get that much more expensive and I'd get that much more screwed that much harder that much sooner.
Pick your service provider first--based on the service you want and the service they have at the prices they provide. Pick your device secondarily.
(I also think the AirRave is weak sauce)
You did your best, you tried your hardest. You can't win every one.
Yeah Thanks. I am in kind of a bind now though. I paid $800 to break my contract with Tmo because Amazon was giving away 1cent phones which would save me the same 800 on 4 lines. Now that sprint fell though, and verizon's phone selection blows I feel like I just wasted $800...

A new modem can improve coverage consistency, but it is not likely to give your coverage where coverage did not exist previously, that requires new towers.

My daughter lost her GN II a while back, about 2 months ago to be exact. We did the insurance thing and got a replacement. Going through all the stuff in her room she no longer wanted and guess what? We found her frickin phone that we reported lost/stolen. Question is being that we reported it stolen/lost, I know there's probably not a way to activate it on sprint or a different carrier or anything but would she still be able to use it as as lets say a tablet for just wifi stuff etc...? Not 100% sure on Sprints regulations and I really don't want to send it back as I've already paid for the re-placement. Any ideas would be helpful? I've hear several things so I have it on Airplane mode right now and wanted to ask here to see if anyone else has had something similar happen and if they were able to use the device after as say a tablet or even re-activate it or flash it in some way.

hmm, thanks for the reply. Anyone else have any idea if it can even be used a tablet on wifi?
Sure you can use it as a tablet. You can also take it and put it on cricket or other non sprint cdma provider. Well if you know what you are doing you can even put it back on sprint.
The thing is what is legal? Really the phone belongs to sprint till you have paid it off (phone prices are subsidized by your plan). Since you reported it stolen then you only paid part of it. Most likely you had to pay extra to get your replacement to help cover part of the price of the new one. This means the lost phone is not paid for and does still belong to sprint.
What you do is your choice. Will sprint come after you over the phone? Highly unlikely but there is always a possibility of it.
Now to legally keep the phone all you need to do is call sprint and tell them that the phone was found. You will have to either place it on another line, pay off the balance, or return the phone to sprint.
Hopefully this will cover all your questions about it.

I would call sprint and let them know it was found. Since you already had it replaced when you thought it was lost and gone forever, they're not going to tell you return the replacement and switch back to the old phone. Depending on your point of view, the worse thing they'll want you to turn in the old phone. Personally, I think that would be a nice option because what else are you going to do with it? To keep it means you have a WiFi only 5.5" tablet, or you have to open a new line to use it as a phablet. And I find having anything less than a 10" tablet is a waste when I have the GN2.
I just see a whole lot of problems if you're discovered with the phone and it's still believe to be stolen. Not that I think Sprint would go after you, but there is very slim possibly they could go after you for fraud.
Actually, the recovered phone belongs to the insurance carrier now. And, as they are partnered with Sprint, Sprint will mark the ESN as bad, so you can't flash it to another carrier.
