Dramas unlocking HTC Desire - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I am giving this a deadline of one week, if I don't have it unlocked in one week I will be putting a video on youtube of the phone being destroyed at my discretion
Hold me to it if you like, its useless to me as is anyway plus it was free so I don't care
I have tried to follow every guide I could find, I have what seems to be a really painful phone.
I cannot get the GOLDCARD done, no such luck, it seems to not see the SD cid at all!
If someone could please give me a link to the most basic guide ( I mean the DUMB guide where if you scratch your nose its in the guide) because I am either missing a step or something is wrong.
Then on top of that my phone is locked to Telstra (an Australia company) and the HBOOT is 0.93.xxxx so I have also tried to downgrade with NO LUCK, again a dumb-dumb guide please because I am over trying to work out whats wrong with this phone.
I have used the Downgrade2.3 and the unrevoked3 plus a few others with no luck.
HELP PLEASE!! i'm losing my mind here
The phone is a month old but I am at the end with it already.

Search for gold card helper on android market, its by far the easiest way
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

There is a sim unlock utility. You do realise that there is a search feature for the forum right?

I do realise there is a search feature on this forum, and after a solid day of searching I have given up looking and posted, I am at the point of make it or break it, either way I will enjoy the outcome

No rooting, goldcard or anything else. It took several attempts but I managed to unlock my phone.

Hi
Try this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php
or this:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/
Try this
If you're a noob like myself,
I suggest you used code unlocker because people say it's safe and using flash or other softwares have chances of bricking your phone. Especially when not skilled like you and myself, I wouldn't try unlocking it myself. Also, when you flash it, they say that your phone gets reset, therefore you will lose some data in your phone. If you like to though, I guess you can. Try this link, I just failed to find the 'Hard spl' and I believe this file is used to flash your phone although I'm assuming you don't really know what I'm talking about.
http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/archive/index.php/t-614384.html
If you want to use the code, do this:
Through ebay/kijiji or etc, you can find people where they sell codes and instructions.
I am also considering to unlock my phone so I have done some research and I found this website.
http://www.buyinnet.com/index.asp
or you could try this one too.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/unlock-code-ROGE...14&_trkparms=72:1215|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318
I'm pretty sure you can find many other ones tho.
I heard from many people that unlocking with the code is very safe so I suggest you do it this way.
I hope this helped!
I found a program to unlock mine, just run it and it pop'd up saying unlocked, using orange branded phone now unlocked, think I just searched unlocking diamond on google and one of the sites had a program to do it, can't say it hasn't damanged it but since running it can now use my simcard in it
don't know the name of it, spent a good while looking forsomething to do it mind, don't think i still have it either (forgot to backup everything before trying out windows 7!)
Instead of using risky software go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3334617&postcount=488
And follow instructions for free unlocking - this will NOT security unlock your phone, only SIM.
And search the net. Solution is there. I don't want to post other links, because they are "politically incorrect".
Good luck.
P.S. EXTREMELY important. If you have GSM phone NEVER EVER use the unlocker from ppcgeeks - it's for CDMA ONLY and will properly brick your phone (requiring change of the mainboard).

[REQUEST] Idiot's Guide

In the N1 General forum there was a great post done - 100% Fool Proof Guide to rooting & ROMs, and I was hoping that we could start a similar thread here.
Please feel free to comment on this post - it is my hope that we can put together a great document for newbs like me in the future. THIS thread is for suggestions on what should be in the guide, not the guide itself. I will reserve the second post for compiling suggestions over the next couple of days.
I just ordered my Desire, and it should be with me in a week or two. I am disturbed by the USB/A2SD issues being encountered by some, and so when I root I want to get it right
imHo, the guide should include:
1) Definitions of Rooting, unlocking, goldcards, generic, kernel, radio and how these relate to future OTA updates. These are concepts which I am familiar with, but feel I know just enough to be dangerous to myself/my device
2) A ballpark comparison of the unique characteristics of ROMs available today (stock-like, minimalist, sense-free, tethering, etc)
3) A step-by-step guide to the most recommended flashing updates people are using today
4) Things to bear in mind if you are a win-x64 user (I understand this is a tripping point for some)
[Reserved for collating ideas]
1) Terminology:
Rooting
Unlocking
Goldcards
Generic
Kernel
Radio
OTA updates, and how they may be affected by flashing your Desire
2) Current ROMs available and their unique characteristics
3) Guide to flashing your desire
4) Win64 users - what to bear in mind
And a big warning that this rooting process can cause unexpected pain on your bank balance if you are unlucky at the minute
I'd say to use the TinyCore method as I had nothing but issues doing it using W7 x64 - there's a guide on MoDaCo that's simple as anything - only a fool would get it wrong!!!
Find it here:
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...inux-download-and-guide-easiest-and-best-way/
And my USB still works fine, not had any issues since rooting and am now happily using an MCRr2 ROM cooked to my liking
I'd have to agree. Tiny Core Linux was so simple to use. I'd never used Linux before and even I could do it!
I did see paul's tweet saying a new safer more reliable method was coming this week hopefully. If that's the case I'll be rooting like mad again!
New, safer, more reliable root method for Legend and Desire coming up next week (all being well). #mcr 7:28 PM May 14th via Tweetie http://twitter.com/PaulOBrien
Only issues I've had was flashing the radio as part of a ROM - wouldn't have it so gonna try it on its own later this evening. Would be nice to get it all in one ROM but meh

u guys are getting it wrong!!!!!!
me too i was saying the same thing last week when i was reading about the bricks and stuff. i didnt have any problems till 2 days ago. well let me tell you that the unrooting process went out wonderful... nothing wrong. i even flashed all the roms possible and even started cooking and porting some roms for my own use too.
the problem is not whether the method is complex or not. the ''brick'' does not happen while you are rooting the phone. nobody actually knows what triggers the damage. some get it on 1st attempt, some after 5-6 flashes, and some like me after numerous ones.
so in my opinion, i dont think you can say this is a safe method bla bla bla and i try to discourage ppl wanting to root ''for the moment''.

I totally agree, I try to at least warn people that there is a fair chance they will brick their device but this thread is about the best and easiest way to root.
At the end of the day if people know the risks and still want to go for it, then they may as well come here for the easiest method
just a quick question guys as im a total noob in android and rooting, does this method also works with the desire and does not require a goldcard?

This method is for the desire!
If you choose to root, then you will only need a goldcard if your handset was network supplied and branded. If for example you bought it and it came in a plain box, and had no network branding on the software then you can do it without the gold card. I got mine from the Carphone Warehouse so it was unlocked and unbranded. I just rooted with the standard SD card.
The software number on my unbranded device is 1.15.405.4. Hope this helps.
Refer to this
1) Nothing is foolproof. If you're a fool, don't root.
2) Foolproof implies pragmatic. The N1 is designed (basically) to be rooted so there's a universal method for all. The Desire wasn't, so things liks different bootloaders, branded phones and goldcards makes everyone just that little bit different. I mean, the HTC memory protection mean things like Adfree don't work out of the box (causes phone to reboot) - if you create a foolproof method we're just going to get threads about "zomg why wont dis app wrk on my fone" because they expect to be spoonfed everything.

[Q] Custom Rom installation service - London?

Hi all...
After waiting ages for the official HTC GB update and being totally let down I have decided to bite the bullet and get a custom rom on my Desire.
However the custom rom for n00bs guide still seems scarily complex with so many different steps to complete.
So my question is this - does anyone know anywhere in London (ideally in Wandsworth or the City of London) where I can pay to get the latest version of Leedroid installed for me? I know there are places that can unlock your sim or repair your cracked screen so surely there must be places that will root your device and install your rom of choice.
Thanks in advance
CB.
It might look scary at first but trust me it's not, after you flash few ROM's you will change them weekly lol.
Take a look on those video tutorials: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
I'm sure someone local to you could help you do it, if you really don't fancy following the guide, in exchange for a few beverages or something. I'm not local tho

That would also work... more than happy to spring for a few beers if someone was willing to help me out.
Lol I'm in London W5 if you're that desperate
Ship your phone to me, along with 50 quid and a stamped, self-addressed return envelope, and I'll be happy to help!
Otherwise...many, many folks have gone thru the procedure (even total techno-phobes like myself!!) and come thru without dramas. And if you do the job yourself, you will know what to do if/when you decide to flash other ROMs in future...save forking out every time you want to update.
Yeah seriously, if you still find this all confusing, I'm sure someone would be willing to take you through step by step, or further explain those guides.. You can PM me and I'd be willing to help.
+1
You should really do it yourself, in case you will have update it in the future...

Where would be easy for you to get to? Ealing Broadway is quite easy for me, pehaps one weekend or one evening after work. I have a netbook I can bring and I'd obviously pay you for your trouble.
I didn't have a clue how to root my Desire, but on monday after the whole bit about the HTC GB release I decided to give it a try.
Took me a while, but I followed the instructions carefully and now have a great Desire running GingerVillain 2.7.
Seriously, follow the guide given and you should have no problems.
I'm not a techno whizz but even I managed it.
cha cha
Sorry for bumping an old thread, but is there anyone in London preferably North or maybe East who could help me with this?
My better half has a cha cha which has the usual woes and I gather I need an XTC clip to gain s-off and install a custom rom.
I'm not incredibly computer literate, but I think i could install the rom assuming someone can help me gain S-off. I'm happy to pay for the service.
Thanks

a quick read of this chacha thread will be more useful, says you don't need XTC clip.
you can unlock your bootloader via HTCdev. it won't give you s-off, but you can still root and install custom rom.
in all honesty you'd be much better off learning how to do it yourself. it sounds daunting at first, many people who have gone down this route have had no prior experience. like many things it really is about patience, reading and understanding. plus it's more satisfying
My mistake, I think I may be confusing myself.
I read this bit
"Therefore you cannot install a custom ROM on a non-S-OFF-non-bootloader-unlocked-non-rooted-non-CWM phone. Understood? "
To mean that I needed s off to install a custom rom?

don't just read selective confusing bits, slow down, read the whole post again, several times.
i picked an easier to understand quote...
"Unlocking the bootloader will allow you to flash CWM, root your phone and install custom roms. Unlocking the bootloader will NOT give you S-OFF!"
this is all part of the reading and learning i mentioned i don't even own that phone but a quick read suggests that guide is pretty comprehensive...
if it still doesnt make sense search around in the chacha threads as it's for that phone, nothing to do with desire
good luck!

[Q] Root HTC Wildfire

I have rooted many phones but this one has me stumped totally. I absolutely cannot unlock the bootloader. Android version 2.3.4 software number 3.01.652.1 I have tried many ways to root this phone. Htc web site gives me error that I must update software but my phone states its up to date??? I have googled this problem and I have tried absolutely everything I have found to root this phone. I know many have had this problem also.
I have seen it repeated times BUT I have NOT found a solution. Please point me in the right direction. I really need to root to remove all the bloatware. I already have spent about 30 hours working on this. Maybe a beta root would work if there is a link to that. I know there is someone that could point me in the right direction. I have looked and tried numerous things and other ways to root but no luck at all. Please help!
I have found the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21408713#post21408713 but I just don't understand what to do!! I would happily pay someone to root this phone!!! I am near the Knoxville, TN area. It is NOT activated so if you're interested let me know.
Please Help!!
I have still not received any help---I have tried making a gold card but when files are extracted to go on gold card it states something is missing???
This is where I found this link--[TUTORIAL][S-OFF] Virgin Mobile CDMA S-OFF Without XTC-Clip Confirmed Working!
I have followed directions exactly---After the files are extracted to gold card they do NOT look like this
F:/PG76DIAG.nbh
F:/PG76DIAG.zip
I only have PG76DIAG.nbh
and PG76DIAG no zip after this file
states my package is incomplete
I did make gold card and tried to look for download elsewhere but I always come up with the same error.
I'm sure there is a way to do this--more wasted hours--someone please help!!
Your Wildfire S model is CDMA?

[Q] Rooting HTC One M8 Developer Edition

Hi there,
I've recently learned that the only way to be able to truly customize my phone is through rooting it. However this is a process Im not so familiar with and something I've heard can end up badly. Now I've watched a couple of video's on youtube about what to do and how to do it. But I have one major question. In each video I seem to watch, none of them are the developer edition. I remember reading, before purchasing the phone, that the developer edition came with an unlocked bootloader? Of which I am not certain as to what that is. But each time, in the videos, they go to the HTCdev website to request the bootloader to be unlocked or something of the sort. I also read somewhere by doing that, they are able to cross-reference the fact you've rooted your phone and deny complete warranty replacements. That is assuming you did root your phone in the end. My main concern is losing this warranty, I do not wish to void it at all, and by registering that you have kind of puts me off rooting my device. But then I began thinking, my bootloader is already unlocked, does this mean I don't have to register with that HTCdev website? and will this mean I can root it without them knowing, so I am then able to restore it (Of which i will need to learn) and get it replaced if something is to happen to my phone?
I know there are a lot of questions involved in this post! Sorry if i'm asking ridiculous things, but I am new to this kind of stuff!
Cheers,
Exactly, you're bootloader is already unlocked . all you really need to do is push a custom recovery to be rooted.
