[GUIDE] Super EASY Temp Root using normal SD Card

Big props to SAINTH for his guide. Some of my guide is a word for word rip off of his guide. I just copied it and played around to get a simpler way to root. It is still temporary but now when you have "SU" you are messing with the ACTUAL files on the device, NOT a copy on your SD card. Also, programs installed in root mode are still on your device when not in root mode.
I wrote this entire post while tethered to my device using this method.
NOTE: IF SOMEONE COULD GIVE ME A RECOVERY TO FLASH, I THINK WE WOULD HAVE PERMANENT ROOT
OK, I am a dev noob... total noob... please no flaming...
Getting Started: (ONE TIME STUFF)
1) Partition your SD card with at least a 300mb EXT3 partition. I Used gparted in Ubuntu. (ubuntu.com ...download the iso, boot as a live cd, install gparted....google for more details)
2) Download and install from Market: Bar Control. I will explain why in a moment.
3) Download and extract visionroot.zip into your tools directory.
4) Use adb to install programs and transfer files to your device:
On the phone, enable "USB debugging" in Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development
On a computer with the Android SDK tools installed and working (adb is included with the SDK, so install the sdk and you will have adb. GOOGLE "adb sdk install" for more details):
adb push busybox /data/local
adb push rage /data/local
adb push root /data/local
adb push rsync /data/local
adb push su /data/local
adb install Term.apk
adb install Superuser.apk
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/busybox /data/local/rage /data/local/rsync /data/local/root
5) Run Bar Control and select Terminal Emulator to run in the task bar. Early on, when I was playing around with this rooting method, temp root would just disappear. I found it stays if I use Bar Control. I think since Terminal Emulator is in the task bar, android is less likely to kill it. I did this whole post using tethering without root ever going away.
Ok. SETUP stage is now over. From this point on is how you will get root each time you boot up your phone.
Getting Root:
1) On the phone, open "Terminal Emulator" from the taskbar and type:
cd data
cd local
./rage
Wait for it to say "[+] Forked NNNN childs." then press the back button until you are back at the home screen. It will be slow for a bit.
2) Open "Terminal Emulator" again from the task bar and it should force close. It's ok if it doesn't. Just skip to #3.
3) Open "Terminal Emulator" one more time from the task bar and the prompt should display "#". This is the ROOT prompt! You are almost golden now! Then type:
cd data
cd local
./root
You may get some "Killall: Can't kill such and such" messages. Not a problem.
DO NOT hit the back button. You want terminal to keep running. Hit the Home Button.
YOU NOW HAVE ROOT! Superuser should be working too. We may find that we dont need bar control and terminal running. Let me know and I will change my post.

What I've Used Root For So Far
Some people are questioning the value of root without custom ROM's. Here is what i have used ROOT for on this ROM so far:
1) Wireless Tether - this alone is worth it! The 9-5 version from this page works amazingly on the G2:

2) Uninstall Crapware - I used Titanium to uninstall Web2Go. What a pile of steamy poop. EDIT: The software MAGICALLY reappears after reboot. I can't wait to crack this phone!
3) Back up with Titanium - Most awesome backup program out there. Needs root to work.

this is all well and good, but the point of rooting is the custom roms, we've had a Temp root since day one, but no reason to root it.

Yes we did BUT that temp root method didn't allow access to the real files of the device. It accessed copies (simply put I know). This temp root gives ROOT access to the entire device which puts us a GIANT step closer to a permanent solution.
Also, the other temp method couldn't handle installing Apps in one mode and using them in another. Some Apps disappeared at reboot. With this method, Apps that are installed in either mode are always accessible.
Basically I did this for my own device and just wanted to share with others

Oh btw, someone posted a clockwork recovery that was allegedly compatible with the G2 but I don't think anyone had the balls to flash it. Its in the root think tank thread...

Looks like a great guide as only 1 part is required - this allows me to part in my G1 AmonRa Recovery FTW!~111
(Also a great option if you are worried about booting up your G2 after formatting the SD as any progs looking for files there will be disappointed until you can copy them back ...)
Running a continuous Ping in Term now to see if that does the trick ...

IF all we have to do to keep root is to keep the shell open - can't we run a prog or command to prioritize that prog ... like ... i remember that auto taskiller had settings against apps that were in the forgroud, background, background services etc ...
can we fool the OS into thinking this is allways a foreground process even though it's really running in BG ...or somehow give it highest priority?
EDIT 2:
Installed WirelesTeather.apk and ran and installed binaries - SU came up and granted all permission w/o issue - everything looked good.
Didn't open any other programs and decided to test it later, after noticing the AP didn't show I checked Terminal from the taskbar and it was back to $ (was closed by system)
I am running a fish aquarium for livewallpaper - so I'm sure this is why it closed as I'm running more processes at idle ... however, it looks like opening pretty much anything will cause the terminal to close and kill the "temp root'
Running a continuous Ping in Term now to see if that does the trick
FINAL EDIT:
OK! Ran continuous ping, opened Quake 3 - played for a bit - closed it.
Checked Term from the status bar - My Ping is still running !!1111 (IE the shell didn't close and we still have root)
So ... maybe this helps

Got it up and running, and just got 2.26 down, 1.23 up on my laptop off wireless tether.

so since this works directly with system files what happens if you try to metamorph something..will it revert on reboot or stay

ive tried, several different ways, even ones that had a good chance of bricking, i.e. messing with ruu, and swapping files in the middle of flashing, just to try and get this perm root

For Wireless Tether, I'm getting an error where it can't start access point. Anyone else have that problem? My computer won't recognize it without it.
EDIT:
Never mind, access point won't start if WiFi is on, and WiFi Tether isn't automatically shutting it off (like I think it's done on other phones), so if anyone else has the problem, turn off WiFi, then run WiFi Tether.

Which tethering apk are you using? If you are using the one from the link I provided it should work. I am not having to turn off wifi first for it to work for me.

Getting Started [Update 12/23 - OTA Update Install fix for root]

[Update 12/23] For those of you unable to install the new system update, I've found a solution -- scroll down to the update! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES THAT MAY OCCUR!
So I figured I'd at least get things started - Credit goes to whomever first tried z4root on their Droid Pro - and to mahst687 for the deodexing.
Lets Begin!
Resources:
Motorola ADB Driver
Android SDK
xUltimate V2.2.2
(Can't post links apparently, sorry -- googles your friend!)
#1 Root:
As seen on numerous android sites already, root is obtainable via z4root in the market. It may not work the first, second, or even third time -- just keep trying, it works I promise.
#2 Bootstrap and Clockwork Recovery
Download and install 'Rom Manager' from the Market. Once installed flash the Droid2 Clockwork Recovery. After flashing, obtain the Droid2 Bootstrapper and install it. Confirm Clockwork Recovery works by booting to recovery via Bootstrap.
#2 Deodex:
Download Android SDK for ADB, as well as the Motorola ADB Drivers posted above. Second, download xUltimate - also posted above. Once everything is downloaded and installed we're ready to begin.
1. Run Main in the xUltimate package - if the ADB drivers installed successfully you should be greeted with a menu containing several options - great!
2. Next run option 1.
3. Run option 2.
3. Run option 3 - sit back and relax for a bit
4. Once option 3 is done doing its thing, navigate to the xUltimate folder, more specifically the "origi_frame", and delete guava.odex
5. Run option 4 - it'll be a short wait
6. Exit the xUltimate
7. Enable USB Mass Storage on the phone and transfer both "done_app", and "done_frame" to the ROOT of the SD card.
8. Once both folders have transferred disable USB Storage, but keep the phone plugged in via USB.
9. Open up a command prompt and browse to the android SDK Tools folder (or where ever your ADB executable is located).
10. Enter the following commands:

11. If all went well your phone should reboot - which may take a few minutes. Enjoy!
[Update]12/23/2010
For those of you unable to get the new Droid Pro OTA working I have found a solution! You will need:
1)Root
2)Clockwork Recovery
3)System.img from update
4)Current Nandroid backup of your phone
5)ADB drivers and ASDK
So lets begin.
1)Boot into Clockwork recovery and create a backup of your phone.
2)Once complete, mount the phone as USB storage and pull the system.img file from the nandroid backup folder, as well as the nandroid.md5 (KEEP THESE FILES SAFE!!!!!)
3)Obtain the system.img file from here (Compliments of whoopsiedaisy).
4)Replace the system.img file in the Nandroid backup folder on your PHONE.
5)ADB into your phone (preferably still in recovery) and do the following:

# cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2010-xx-xx.xx.xx.xx
# rm nandroid.md5
# md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
6)If all goes will it should create a new MD5 checksum file utilizing the new system.img
7)Go to the 'backup and restore' menu in Clockwork, and select 'Advanced Restore'
8)Select the correct nandroid backup folder where the new system.img file is located, and then select 'Restore System'
9)Assuming all goes well, go to Settings, About and check your new system version!

Not at all. Simply run z4 if all you require is root access (and a host of apps like Wireless Tether, DroCap, Titanium Backup ...)

Can you please post the quickoffice apk from the Dpro so I can put on an DX? Same would go for the software that allows me to Invite attendees to meetings using GAL. It be copasetic if you can.

I downloaded everything you said and i started my deodex but when i select option 3 in main it tells me "error no odex file" have i done something wrong please advise

I feel like I must be missing something. I just download an app from the market and reboot and I'm rooted?
Also, what is the deodex for? I want to root my phone to install the apps I want and I want wifi tether. Do I need it?
Also, I really want to understand what is going on under the hood, but I don't know where to start. Is there a 'for dummies' tutorial somewhere that I can go to to start understanding what all of this stuff is, so I can make informed decisions for myself about what I want instead of begging for help on internet forums? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Yes, Z4Root app allows you to root, re-root, and UNroot.

I see no uproot button on the screen. Only a root button

You'll only see the unroot button once you've rooted. Otherwise, it will first show only the "root" option.

I was rooted. I had titanium installed and superuser. Z4 ran fine but I had an old version of it. I dont know if that matters but thats all I did. I downloaded the 1.3 version and I now have the unroot button. On the old version there was no option for temp root either. Just root. On the version I have now there is a temp root and perm root button.

Would just like to let people know that your method for "updating" via nandroid backup would not work for me. Followed all the instructions to the letter and during the advanced restore I continually received md5sum mismatch errors.
So I took the chance and updated through the OTA update, it installed fine but lost root. Ran z4root (twice) and gained root access again .
Looking forward to some real custom daily driver roms for this guy.

Kinda new to the whole rooting thing, just got a new Pro and rooted successfully with z4root, got rid of bloatware and installed titanium backup, wifi tether, etc. Am I correct in reading your post that I can unroot, OTA update, and re-root again? If so, will I have to uninstall bloatware again, or reinstall root apps? Or any other repeats? Any danger in doing this?

No need to un-root. This update is for the system portion only and does not touch the userdata. I simply went ahead on the rooted phone, let the OTA update download and install. In doing so lost root, but had no trouble gaining root access again via z4root. Did not have to re-remove any of the bloatware, at least if I remember correctly. Root apps will not need to be reinstalled but you may need to re-give them permission for root access. No danger that I have noticed or can think of.

For anyone doing the update the android method....
For it to work
You must do the adb "new" md5 creation portion with your phone in clockwork recovery for it to work and to not receive the mismatch error...
To do this, reboot recovery... then plug in usb from your computer... during the phone boot into recovery you should hear the alert from your computer that something from usb was plugged in. Finally, use the mount option in recovery to mount sd card to be able to transfer the .img file over to the correct directory then unmount sd card and do the adb commands in terminal window...
I had the same mismatch errors using my windows 7 machine and creating the md5 with android booted

[Q] Question: Supposed Quick Root Method Usning Androot/Rom Maqnager Need Help!!!

Ok so I started the method previously posted before it was linked back to nbecthers method because it supposedly works but I flashed the clockwork it wouldn't flash my custom rom (CM Mod 6.1.1) and returned me to the stock then I tried the correct method and it won't let me adb push flash_img/data/local or mtg0.img to data/local either so I can't cd, chmod the commands to then boot into the stock recovery and flash esprimg.zip followed by clockwork(update.zip cause its already applied but NAND protection stops it from working I guess) because I no longer have a stock recovery to exploit or whatever I have clockwork I have since used androot and root explorer for root used to copy flash_image and mtg0.img to data/local and exploid is in the sqlite_stmt_journals as it should be... So can I run the commands to run flash image and mtg0.img and exploid again from and android shell off my phone with su permissions from androot temp root and then flash a custom image or am a screwed? Or should I run the exploid command toggle wifi and then the flash/mtg commands from android shell or what cause I'm away from a pc and I need to do this to my phone plus it goes to the triangle screen and nothing works I gotta pull the battery...

Honestly, start from ground zero of the updated for 12/30 root method and you will be just fine. Just messing around earlier today I unrooted and rerooted my phone a few times. Stick with eugene373's method from step one on and things should work fine.

Ok so in my never ending struggle against the Evil Eclair/T-Mo/HTC NAND Protection and the Futility of Trying to flash a ROM With the "Supposed AndRoot QuIck Root Method" As well as a fine point from Nbetcher that the Engineering build must be flashed because Android has NAND protection while running. I have devised my own "No PC ROOT Method!!!"
Required Files (Tested For MT3G SLIDE Latest OTA Unrooted Stock)
1.Download Androot From Location of Choosing (I'm Using Version 1.6.2)
2.Download ESPRIMG.zip (ENG build)
3.Download SlideEng-Package.zip
4.Download Custom Rom Of Your Choosing(Mine Is CM 6.1.1 Stable)
5.Download Android Terminal Emulator(From Market)
6.Download Root Explorer Android (Requires Root) (From Market Or Some Place Online)
7.Download File Explorer (Dev:Adao Team)(From Android Market)
8.Download Latest Clockwork Recovery(I Used 2.5.0.1)
Please Not I Am NOT The DEV Behind these Apps nor am I Resposible For Any Damages You May Incur To Your Device or Warranty by using this Method! Also Before anyone says I repped someone off remeber I accidentally discovered this using 2 failed methods because they essentially cancel each other out.(The Latter Nbetchers works just not after the AndRoot One)!!!
So...
1st Download/Install all needed files from market( File Manager Android Terminal Emulator)
2nd Download all zip images, Recoveries, Roms, apps from phone browser Directly To SD ROOT(Google em until I get links up on Dev Forum)
3rd. Unzip SlideEng-Package.zip To Root using File Manager or Other Zip Program for android(Andro-Zip Works Well)
4th Change Name of Clockwork to Update.zip(Case Sensative)
5th Install AndRoot And Run Root Me With Install Su & Temp Root/Unroot After Reboot Selected(Or Else You Will Boot Loop)
6th Install And Run Root Explorer then Copy and paste flash_img and mtd0.img to /data/local on android device by multi-select copy then RM R/W in program in upper left on data local folder.
7th IMPORTANT!!! Long Press and hold each copied file and set permissions to allow read and write on both user and the lowest option (I Think Dev or system)
8th Run Android Terminal Emulator and type the following commands verbatim spaces included Pressing enter after each line($ n # will be there provided you follwed all steps if not go back to androot and root again):
$ su
# cd /data/local
# chmod 04755 flash_image
# ./flash_image misc mtd0.img
Now power off and reboot using VOL-DOWN + POWER
It'll reboot into the HBoot Screen and ask if you want to Check ESPRIMG.zip after Verifying it will ask you to flash Select Yes (VOL-UP) And Wait DO NOT POWER DOWN OR TAKE OUT BATTERY!!!
Once its Completed it will ask you to Reboot select no Instead and Go To Recovery
Now Select APPLY Update.zip to flash CLOCKWORK RECOVERY YAY!!! :-D Now We Can Flash a Custom Rom With Root and Even Go As Far As S-OFF!!! But Please Be Sure Its Already On Your Micro SD...
Select Wipe Data Factory Reset by Scrolling with VOL- UP/DOWN or Track Pad and Use Power/Trackpad TO Select.
Now Use Install Zip from SD Card to Install Custom Rom(Flash GApps Second if downloaded and desired if using CM Mod 6.1.1) Now Reboot And Enjoy!!! If you Wanna Flash Anything Else Use Rom Manager From Market and Som Custom Roms to Boot into Clockwork!!! Thanks to all the Devs and their tools and immense knowledge for Making this Possible! Thanks To All The ROM Chefs Too!!!

[Q] I'm having a problem perma rooting

I can't find a solution to this from searching the forums so i'm just gonna ask.
I'm using the gfree method via adb. i'm getting all the way through it without any problems untill i get to the "lock in" root section.
I get the error message that the wiki says should get and then ignore, but i also get another message that says something like
"cp: can't stat '/sdcard/su' : no such file or directory"
any help with this would be appreciated.
also, are all the bad things i've heard about visionary true? should i go ahead and root with visionary, or keep trying this way? thanks

I just checked and it says I'm s-off. I'm very confused.

Well first ill tell u Visionary worked for me in like 10 minutes time. Very easy n very fast. Not true what they say. If u got s-off, good. Ur almost there. Have to check out gfree method quik in order to help u. Hold up

What guide are you using, the one on the Wiki doesn't have you copy (cp) anything.
is this the command where you run into the problem?

This is running a script to lock in root, you already ran gfree while you were temp rooted so that's why you are S-OFF.
Do you have the "su" file on the root of your SD card?
You should be able to retry everything but the gfree part.
As for Visionary, some people report success but other have reported big problems. I found the gfree method to work pretty well, even though I used Visionary when I was temp-rooting (when I just got my phone) when I permarooted I used the gfree method.

yes, that is the command that is giving me problems. i checked my sd card and superuser.apk is at the root of it.
when you say retry everything what exactly would i retry? i'm at work, and don't have access to adb. do i need adb to "retry"

so, there are two different guides that perm root. the first is the wiki and this is the one that i was following. the other has almost the exact same steps except it has the wpthis file. i guess when i get home i'll try the other method and see if it works. thanks for everone's help

no its a 2 step procedure maybe you should go ahead and unroot and s-on then go ahead and re root. if not you can still re run everything start off with temp root then go ahead and lock in the perma root

You should have both Superuser.apk and su on the root of your SD card. Either push it from your computer again (first command in the wiki):

adb push su /sdcard/su
Or just copy it to your SD card (be sure to unmount the card when done). Then re-run the root script in terminal.

that totally did it. I pushed the su file and re ran the script and i got root. it's wierd because i thought i pushed it the first time but i guess not. anyway, thanks

[Q] Problems unrooting and flashing desire z

Hi all,
I have had my htc desire z for about two weeks now, But since i have had my phone i've been having a few problems.
I had rooted my phone using visionary +. And all was going well untill i was trying to install setcpu to overclock my cpu. After installation my phone rebooted and now every thing that i need root access for is showing up as not accessable.
Busybox installer error message:
Your phone is roote
Busybox not found
The application failed, either because your device is not nand unlocked or we were unable to remount.
Rom manager error message:
An error occured while attempting to run priviledged commands!
Is it possible(if yes, how) to unroot and flash my desire back to stock settings including the permissions back to stock.
If not how can i root my phone so i can use all of the fuctions
Regarding the phone info the spaces are actually . but the system will not allow me to enter these as of yet

I forgot to mension in the last post that i have expiriance with mobile phone's and flashing so i'm not affraid to tackle big complicated ways of undoing the process.

It sounds like maybe you only had temp root.
Did you also do gfree? I did Visionary and gfree, and perm rooted just fine.
However, many on here believe the rage + gfree method is safer, as Visionary has been known to create some semi-bricks. I don't THINK there is any harm in doing rage + gfree at this point, but others on here can probably enlighten.

I tried using root checker to find the issue. It came back with an error message telling me the SU binary was not found in the correct path. I used terminal emulator to try to locate the file but with no success. Any ideas on how to find and move the binary su???

What's displayed on your screen after reboot in recovery?
As in; remove battery, insert battery, hold volume down and power button.

It will not reboot in to root. It runs Visionary and nothing happens.
And when i try to open an app that need root access it fails because it cannot gain permission from superuser. At this point i have tried to unistall all apps that had anything to do with rooting my phone but still no succes. I need to find the stock SU Binary
