[Q] How to unlock a Vodafone HTC Desire HD - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Ive got a new Desire HD and I cant unlock it, its full of Vodafone crap at the moment and I would like to get rid of it.
I followed some steps to unlock/root it with a program, but no succes
Anyone knows what Im doing wrong? or could someone please tell me how this should be done properly?
Thanks in advance,
Ben

Follow one of the guides on custom Rom.
I am also a new user but now running the revolution HD. Read and follow the step by step guide, yes it will lead you to few other step by step guides but it is all essential steps. It took me an evening to get it set up.
iirc its obtain goldcard first, s off, then flash.
Good luck and take your time reading as it can brick your phone if done wrong! If you don't want the hassle dont do it! Just pay someone to unlock via imei.

Have a look in the development thread for the advanced ace hack kit. Read the manual and follow the instructions.

I used that myself with my DHD, It was sim locked to Orange UK but not anymore. Just take time and read everything about it and follow the simple steps.

Have you tried jkoljo's guides? They work like a charm, very straight forward and works as it should. You need to downgrade before rooting, then you have to option of going Radio S-OFF and flash whatever Rom you want.
jkoljo's guides:
How to downgrade to 1.32.405.6 WWE
Root and One click Radio S-OFF tool

you can contact your service provider

I am with Orange and I used the advanced ace hack kit.
In six minutes I was rooted and the sim was unlocked.
This is the easiest way to root ever,
I am now using BeatMod BlissSense 3.2 and it's smooth and fast, well worth a try

Advance Ace Hack Kit is recommended for you !! It dose everything that the phone needs within 15 min ..

You can try Simpleunlocking to get unlock code for your HTC Desire HD and get it unlocked from vodafone network..

Mate use the ace hack kit, when you make your goldcard do full wipe not quick format,I slipped up there first time haha what a year, still I'm rooted now all good

It is quite difficult to root desire HD. It would be very nice if someone who knows how to do it, to make a CLEAR post from A-z. First downgrade? S-off? Adb errors? Gold card? It's a LOT of stuff to read out there about how to do it right but since there are many changes and updates since the first rooted phone, it would be nice if someone will do this from scratch.
Thanks in advance.

I suggest that you just do some reading and learn it. I have spent dozens of hours working on my guides and tools, and 99% of the people who are capable of reading, succeed in the process.
The guides cannot become any easier. Downgrade is your first step, follow the thread. Then there is a link to Radio S-OFF tool in the end of downgrade guide. Follow that link.. You get the point.
In short what you need to do...
A. [GUIDE] How to downgrade 1.7x/1.8x/2.x to 1.32.405.6

B. What to do:
1. Temp root with Visionary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEMnIOb3bIQ&NR=1)
2. Perm root
3. Do your Radio S-OFF

4. Do your ENG S-OFF (HBOOT)

I kinda understand where this guy is coming from. I'm fully confident on the actual root process, my problem lies in actual downgrading. Fair play it will take an idiots guide to get me rooted on my hd. Just wished it was as simple as my G1 was.
I'm aware of needing an sdk file to downgrade, but the guides here don't reflect on that.
In no way is my post meant to be or sound disrespectful in anyway. You guys here do an amazing job, you really do and I (as many others) here appreciate it 100%.
My reasons for root are solely selfish. I want root to allow for use of cachemate louder volume hack and hopefully better battery life.
In my G1 days I had to flash my fone like a whore flashes her pants, but that was just to keep he phone usable.

Thank you audiavant for more specific instructions.
Anyway last day I was stuck when trying to downgrade. I have HTC sync but not the desire sdk and maybe because of that, Adb was not working. I'll try again this evening, hopefully don't get a brick after that

Help DHD Root

Hi, I'm a little lost on the site here..
I have been reading up on rooting my DHD and to be honest i dont know if its possible, if it can what rom do i use and what tools..
Andriod Version 2.3.3
HTC sense version 2.1
Software Number 2.50.405.2
Any help & advise would be great.
Thanks
It is possible. Everything you need is in my signature
So downgrade first, then do Radio S-OFF and optionally ENG S-OFF. Then follow the instructions in Radio S-OFF thread (first post) to flash ClockworkMod and finally a ROM.
ENG S-OFF can be done later, too, so you do not really need to worry about it at this point.
I would recommend Android Revolution HD because it is the most popular ROM for Desire HD.
Thank you very much for the quick response ill get to doing it now
After downgrading you can use this guide (Its by the previous gentlemen as well)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11557769
I also recommend Android Revolution HD
Just to confirm I downgraded and rooted yesterday using these guides. Was simple and a brilliant help couldn't have done it without them.

to jkoljo -
I have followed your guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003) for downgrading my phone. step 1 and. step 2b (I have gingerbread) - I have followed them but I don't see what is written on step 3. I don't see "#", doesn't this mean I am stuck?
What should I do?
My phone has the following:
andriod 2.3.3
htc sense 2.1
baseband 12.54.6025U_26.09.04.11_M2
kernal 2.6.35.10-gd2564fb
build number: 2.50.405.2
software number: 2.50.405.2
browser version: webkit/553
Hi jkoljo, I've just got my DHD yesterday and need to unlock it. Can I follow your guide and tools without having an SD card? I've ordered one but that will be afew days coming.
Thanks.

Nope I don't think its possible due to having to place the downgrade zip file on the SD card, and then there is the fact that if its branded you will have to make a goldcard.
Yes I am new to this myself so I apologize if i am wrong but just wanted to try and help you out.

Also think its not possible, after all if there was a way it would be in the guide (a safe way at least). You should wait for your card to arrive and maybe try and get a second card in case you need to make a gold card.

I think he's stuck on downgrading. I think AAHK isn't able to root phones running sense 3 without wiping all data.
You are absolutely right. A downgrade is needed for root and s-off which requires a full wipe.
As xxkid123 and Muikkuman have suggested, you need to downgrade before anything else.
My Desire HD resource page might help you in the future, and this thread might be what you need now. (I'm not sure. Read carefully.)

[Q] root my Desire HD without AAHK?

i was gonna just go ahead and root my Desire HD following online guides through google but that AAHK seems to be having bad things said about it.. i'm not sure, i dont understand half the things its saying
but anyway, i just want to flash a new 4.0 or 4.1 rom onto it, just need to root the thing first
any help please?
Use the hack kit despite what you may have read.
Click on my signature and check out post#7.
By the way, wrong section. Read forum rules while you are at it.
Sent from a dream.
There will always be bad things said about every method - the internet is full of fools.
Despite the very crass nature of way AAHK's """effen""" (multiple quotes because I loathe that "word") manual, it does get to the point, and if you follow it then you'll have no problems,
Well, thanks to the AAHK tool, my phone is Semi-Bricked, and im having a hard time recovering it.

You messed up. Your fault. AAHK works perfectly if you read the manual twice before doing anything. If you go about using your own logic and pressing whatever you want then you'll mess up.

I read the efffen manual and did everything correctly, it restored to froyo but started freezing on the HTC splash screen
I got the phone working now anyways, albeit with an old radio

AHH you restore to froyo?? You are not very clever are you? Maybe you missed the part where it says not to flash a froyo RUU in a device running gingerbread..that is all over the forum and even in the guide in my signature. Also in the effen manual and in the Hack Kit site.
Besides, it does not exist such a thing as semi brick...or you are bricked or you are stuck...
To sum up, stuck at the splash screen is fully described in the troubleshooting section of the manual. What people need to know, is that the Hack Kit is not for the lazy noobs, being a noob is fine if you are wise enough to learn what does hacking your device needs and involves. There are lots of thread on that...even I have writen a guide to help noobs out. No one will do anything for you...IT IS YOUR PHONE, so do your homework and stop whining.
i have a question
i am running version 2.2 on desire hd and software number is 1.83.466.5

There is no EASY way to achieve s-off as aahk is retired. But, if you are skilled enough, this is an ADVANCED method to achieve s-off - http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=411
Take note however that those method is unsupported, which means that no one is responsible to help you to understand it and help you along the process. Glevitan apparently is working on the automated s-off tools, so you can wait for it to be released. However, there is no exact time of when the tools will be released, and maybe it will never be, only he knows.
You can gain root however, using glevitan's easy root tools, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2169515
Make sure to read the thread carefully to understand how it works. :good:

Is Gfree v.2 alright to use to gain sec off ON A DEVICE RUNNING a JB kernel? (3.0.62_JellyTime_42_R5-g8e08b6e-dirty) ... or is easyradiotool v2.2 any better?
I have goldcard and simunlock/SU/root already
I have no idea what those tools are. If you just want to flash a custom ROM just flash a recovery.
lol, sorry, dude - PM'd you with an explanation... going back to square one.
