[Q] Data usage monitor - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone found an app that will show you which applications are chewing up all the mobile data?
My phone has been sitting on my desk for the past 4 hours and has used up 10mb of data...

I use Traffic Stats Lite from the market. The free one shows you which apps are using the data and you can buy the pro version which has nice pretty graphs
It can show totals to date or just how much has been used today

Great suff, App works great! THANKS!

Using "Data counter widget" at the moment. It doesn't have the graphs like TSL but it's a hand little widget to see at a glance how much data you're using.

ICS native Data usage widget?

Does anyone know of a data usage widget that pulls its data directly from ICS's native data usage menu in settings?
I found Onavo on market but I do not want a seperate app running in the background.
Not sure about the direct pull from the ICS data usage menu, but this is what I use.

Seems accurate enough.

This is what I used on my HTC Desire, I was very pleased with the accuracy. On my Galaxy Nexus... I'm not so sure. Results seem to vary from the internal ICS tally.
I'll give it a try. Thanks
I am aslo looking for such a widget which simply displays data usage monitored by ICS or JB kernel.

I've been looking for something that also does this. Seeing as I haven't found anything, I've send an email to the dev of Minimalistic Text to see if there is a way he can modify the data usage stats of his widget or add a new feature to read the native 4.x stats. It seems as though it can be done. I'm no Android programmer (yet) but found the following and included it in the email.
developer.android.com/reference/android/net/TrafficStats.html
His current data usage gets reset to zero after a reboot.
I just created a settings short cut to data usage and placed it on my home screen. Its good enough for now.

Still no luck? I am looking for the same thing. I don't need any special xMB app to count it again and consume system resources, just simple progress graph with the number.

Nexus Weird Data Usage

Hi guys.
On the new JB Rom. So awesome until about 1hr ago. Getting unreal battery life etc then my network just wont stop!! Both wifi and data at the same time just pinging off there heads.
So I thought I'd check my data usage see what's doing. Nova launcher is like in the hundreds of megabytes and get this, my calculator is at like 900mb!!! Wtf!! What's with that? That's foreground and background added but as far as I'm aware, what the f##k would my calc need ANY data whatsoever! Very confusing.
It anyone can shed some light on this it would be great.
Also my available space on phone is reading wrong also. I have like 8gb free and its showing like 2. Anyone else?
Thanks.

Data usage widget based on system data usage tracking? (Jelly Bean / Root)

Everywhere I've read this question posed online replies either say it can't be done, or it would require root, however there's little elaboration on that point.
Just wondering whether this has been cracked yet? It seems like a widget that would see a lot of use if it existed and was known about. I'm quite surprised the information isn't exposed as a permission, but I guess Google simply have bigger fish to fry.
Thanks for any advice
yeah i recently started to look into a simple data usuage widget that uses what the phone is already measuing only to find no one has done it (obviously my search brought me to this thread).
Im currently testing out 3 different (free) widgets but the problem with all of them is they can only measure data used since installation, not data the OS has already been tracking via the Data Usuage screen within settings. Exposing that data to a widget would be awesome and useful. This would be a great thing if someone were to bring this to market even if it required root. There's certainly has to be a demand...
I know I'm resurrecting a semi-old thread, but I too am looking for something like this and can't believe it's not available yet. Anyone know of one?
I never found one that pulled directly from the system metrics but the best one I've seen and currently use is wali data usage defender. It allows you to track mobile data, wifi, or both, you can put in when your billing cycle ends, your limit, data already used so far, warnings/notifications at preset thresholds, and more. And its free.

[Q] incredible os services data usage

i know the topic of data usage by os services is an old one. but i haven't found any appropriate fix or solution to this "problem". I'm not sure if it really is one so i'll present my case and you give me your opinion.
my dinc is rooted, bootloader unlocked but s-on.
these are the apps install on it:
camera
linkedin
go launcher ex
messages
my data manager
no lock
opera mobile
phone
play store
quickpic
root explorer
sms filter
superuser
ttorrent
vibrafix
zedge
all other bloatware has been removed sometime back.
the data manager app shows that os services used 5MB in 4 days. i have a very limited monthly data plan and also want to extend battery life.
from the apps list above, no app chews any data on standby. background, autosync is all off. all installed app data usage is reportedly separately in data manager so no app surely contributes.
i couldn't find much so i ran a packet capture app and analysed in wireshark. found 3 ip addresses as destination. 2 of them may be related to go launcher ex and the 3rd one goes to chinacache company. this one i'm not sure of what exactly for. it may or may not be related to go launcher ex.
any suggestions, opinions please?

Well chinacache is a huge world wide company that does business with tons of other companies. So it could be just about any app, system or not.
As to stoping them, get an app from the market called permissions. The app allows you to disable or disallow an apk from having certain permissions. In your case if you think golauncher is one of the culprits, open permissions, look for the golauncher app, click on it, and look for and dissable its permission to to use data/internet. As for the chinacache one, like i said it could be just about any app. Adobe, google (firefox), sun (java), and many other major companies use their services. If you can figure out what app it is, you can dissaple its net permission too. The only downside is that the app in question may need net permission to function or for a legit use, if you dissable it the app may not work right or at all.
thanks for your reply! I noticed that OS services data usage is high when apps like opera mobile is used. I'd like to know what data is actually being transmitted. is it some massive campaign to gather personal data for understand some particular metric.
anyway, ill get that permissions denied app. thanks again.

Also i just found another app called 2g,3g,4g Network Monitor. It will tell you exactly what app is using how much data. I see several system apps using data on my setup, dialer storage, brcm bluetooth services, and several others. I have no clue why half of them even need net access.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ Battery Saving Tips

A phone even with killer looks and amazing features still needs a descent battery backup to support it all. In past we've seen that a few tricks here and there always tend to increase battery life. Usually that includes disabling a few apps or features. This thread is for specifically targeting such tips & tricks and sharing it all so that S6 Edge+ can live upto its expectations..
1. To start with, lets get to the list of bloatwares that can be safely disabled.
If any of you own the AT&T version, here's a list you can disable:-
AT&T Apps:-
AT&T FamilyMap
AT&T Hot Spots
AT&T Live
AT&T Locker
AT&T Mail
AT&T Mobile Locate
AT&T Mobile Transfer
AT&T Navigator
AT&T Ready2Go
AT&T Smart Wi-Fi
Drive Mode
Caller Name ID
Mobile TV
Plenti
Smart Limits
Yp (Yellow Pages)
Other Apps:-
S Voice
Amazon (I prefer the playstore version for frequent updates)
Amazon Kindle
Device Help
Live Weather (Yahoo)
Lookout
Theme Store
Visual Voicemail
2. Refrain from using any free application that has embedded advertisements. They tend to run threads in background to load adds and thus degrade the app performance and used data (so naturally consume more power too). Either buy add-free version or find an alternate app for same purpose and without adds.
3. Disable notifications from social media/news apps like Facebook, Twitter, Tapatalk, etc. Although, the phone wouldn't be that smart if all the notifications are disabled, however, keep them at bare minimum. Not everybody would be interested in notifications from all the apps, so spend some time analyzing through all the installed apps and their settings to turn off the notifications for the apps you do not need to get notifications for. There are several apps that keep sending notifications and running a thread in background which again checks internet to load the notification content. An example would be games like Candy Crush or Clash Of Clans.
4. Turn off "Send Usage Statistics" or "Help Improve the app performance", "Participate in improvement" etc settings from the app which sends data from your device from time to time which acts as a survey to improve the performance of the app. Although this is a necessary option for a developer, however, if you do not care about your granular contribution towards further development of the app, try deselecting such options while setting up new apps.
5. Refrain from using external Memory Management Apps and RAM Cleaners. They tend to run heavy background services to detect memory usage and kill applications. Trust me, you would be better without them.
6. Try using black wallpaper and lock screen. Also, always select Dark Mode if any app has theme section. This makes the pixels produce less brightness and considerably save more battery.
7. Keep GPS Location off when not using any navigational/location based apps. When the GPS is ON, there are some apps that tend to acquire a GPS Lock even though they can work without it. Keeping GPS Off will not allow such apps to request for GPS Lock. GPS Locking is a battery draining process.
8. You can use certain tools like Greenify, WiFi Automatic, etc. to automatically manage application states or phone wireless to save some additional battery. Use these only if you are lazy like me. Otherwise you can always manually turn on/off wifi/bluetooth/nfc etc etc. Also, there are tools (like Juice Defender) which can enable/disable data connective at a frequent interval which results in really good power conservation without loosing push notification.
With applying most of these settings, I'm getting 6-7 hrs of screen on time very easily even when I've downloaded 1+ GB data and 40 minutes of video chat (hangout). Not to mention the usual gaming and application usage.:cyclops:
I hope that helps. I'll keep adding if I get any (without root).
Reserved for future use!

Tweak brightness.
I believe rooting a phone can improve its battery life. This method works for almost all devices.

I'm sure you mean rooting and installing all sorts of battery saving items/tweaking.
Marely rooting wouldn't bring any difference to battery life for sure!
Just tweak brightness, make sure you getting good signal and use WiFi when available, don't leave Abby of the radio on unless not using it and that shall be good I guess

How can you disable those apps. I'm on T Mobile but we have our share of T Mobile bloat. Would love to disable a bunch of them without customizing my files lol

It's the icon on the lower right corner of the screen that says "Apps". Once you get in there find the app that you want to disable. Long press the icon of the app and drag it to the upper left corner of the screen where it says "Disable". Then when the "Disable" word lights up red just release the app into there.
Check out my screenshot for an example.

Thanks for the listing. I love the new design than S6 edge, hopefully it will last longer as well...
Please tell me a solution if any one knows:
I open facebook and after some time i close this application by click on list tasks soft key and close it. Immediately when I go into setting > application manager > running apps I still see a facebook process running. Technically i guess this should be gone i guess and hence any idea how to clean these which i guess can improve battery life.
Update: If I have notifications turned on in facebook then yes it can still run some process even after I close it in Apps Tab but I see the same with Samsung Music Player i.e after I close it I still see a thread in "Running" Apps.

These kind of apps do tend to run a background process to check for updates. Closing the app doesn't necessarily mean that the processes will close. And I'm not even sure even if you turn off all the notification services of an app, all the related processes will close for sure, it depends. Also, if you are using apps like facebook etc, do not worry much about the battery life if you have turned off the background data usage and notification services. It will have very minimal impact, almost negligible!

Out of all those 30 apps you disabled did you lose any functionality?
