[Q] Help! Need to unroot! - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, I have tried almost everything and my camera is broken. The lens opens up but the picture is all purple and not clear. I need to unroot my phone so I can take it back to the sprint store but I do not know which is the best method to use. I saw the RUU and I tried it but it wont connect to my phone usb. The program will open and close on its own.. This is my phone software
2.2
Baseband version
2.15.00.11.19
stock kernel
Build Number
3.70.651.1
Thanks for any help!

Install HTC sync on your computer to get the correct drivers for you USB and then try rerunning the RUU.

http://www.shipped-roms.com/shipped/Supersonic/
Download the 3.70 version, boot the phone into fastboot, connect to pc, the run the RUU exe.

Go to youtube and search it. There are a bunch of good videos out there that walk you through exactly what you need to do
Sent from my Evo while i should be working

+1 on this method, teh roxxorz and I have helped a few people with this in the past few days. However, I would add a few things to this list. If you still get the connection error completely close the ruu and reboot the bootloader from the fastboot menu a few times and then try the ruu again. If this does not work then completely close out of everything and reboot your computer and reboot your phone back into the fastboot and try again. It can take a few tries to get this to work, but I promise you it will. I have used this method 4 times on 3 different phones. Plus, it is the safest route out of any of the methods IMHO.

Thank you everyone for the input! I am trying to run the RUU and its giving me the Error[170] USB connection error. I have the drivers updated. What do you think I can do? I also have S-off

I dont know what im doing wrong. In the youtube videos I been watching off of HTCEVOHACKS.com my ADB in control panel is called HTC BOOTLOADER.. in the videos under ADB its my "MY HTC" does it matter? I tried to install other drivers and it is always called htc bootloader. Does anyone know what the problem may be for me to be getting that error 170?

I'm not sure, but you have done the following:
-If on windows, installed the HBOOT drivers
-Installed and the un-installed HTC sync
-The phone is booted into the bootloader, select fastboot, THEN connect to pc and the run the RUU exe
?

I have never installed htc sync. I have a 64bit windows 7 pc

http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo-sprint/downloads/
You can download sync there. Install it, and then immediately un-install it, then try the process again.

thanks man, i will try that now. its taking forever to download

Yea, it can take a couple of minutes, depending on your connection, but hopefully this solves it.

It worked!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!! I also formatted my SD card. so does this mean I can take my phone back to sprint without them knowing i had it rooted? I only had 384MB free internal. Is that supposed to be like that? I also did a factory reset of my phone. My camera is still messed up tho. The picture is all purple and blue still

No problem man! And the memory is fine. And for the camera, just say it happened with the latest OTA
Edit: Also in the bootloader, you should be S-ON.

oh no!!!! i am still S-OFF in the bootloader!!!! nooooooooo!!!!! what does that mean?

http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
Go down to the Q&A and then download and flash the S-ON tool.

so does that mean I have to reroot my phone? I dont understand. Do i have to hook up my phone to my pc and redo all that root stuff using unrevoked or do i just download these files and put them in the sd card and open them up thru rom manager and install them from the sd card?

I cannot RUU!!!!

I downloaded the executable, ran it and I get the following error:
USB Connection Error (Something like that)
The phone reboots and just says htc. The executable is waiting for boot loader and times out after a minute or so.
I unplug the usb after the executable errors out and it instantly goes to a boot loader screen with ruu. I cannot run anything and have no choice but to battery pull.
According to the RUU thread, one person mentioned having to complete part 2 of rooting so i did that. I still cannot return this thing to stock!!!
I need to send it back to sprint, but I gotta get it back to stock first.
How the crap do I get this back to stock!
I'd reply in the RUU thread, but it looks like the last guy who posted never got a response...hopefully this thread will get me an answer.
adb reboot into recovery using "adb reboot recovery" then enable USB and run the RUU

I ran in to the same issue just now. I couldn't fix it, but here is how to do essentially the same thing.
Follow this guide to extract the RUU
Rename the rom.zip file you extract to PC36IMG.zip and put it on the root of your SD card
Reboot into the bootloader, it will load the file and ask if you wanna install it, you should do so
It'll finish and ask if it should reboot, choose yes and boot into a stock phone.
Its a driver issue, at least it was for me, the google drivers don't work for the htc ruu application. You need the htc drivers install for the phone to be recognized by the rom updater. Hope that helps.
i had that issue too, for me it was the drivers. i then used my work computer and it allowed me to use the RUU
I always had to run a ruu from fastboot in order for it to work
YMMV, but I had to run the oldest RUU first when I was at 1.47 level, and then re-run 1.47 RUU for it to work. Otherwise, bootloader would never get pickup up.
I always had to restart the RUU after I got the error first. Run it again after it times out, when your phone is sitting at the HTC screen and it will work.
Just install the latest HTC Sync and you're set. That will fix your issue. Install HTC Sync and run the RUU afterwards.

Perfect! Exactly what I was looking for. I was able to load that ROM. I think it's still rooted though, I can get to the menu by pressing volume down/power.
Any ideas?

Any ideas if my phone is still rooted, or what I need to do to get it back 100% to the way I got it from Sprint.
You can always got into that recovery when holding down vol and pwr. If you go to recovery you should only see a triangle and an exclamation. That means you are not rooted.

At this time there isn't a way to get your Evo 100% back to stock. Why do you quote yourself?
^I quoted myself because mattrb thought I was being vague, and I didn't want anyone to be confused, so I emphasized my previous post which was clear enough, I thought....and I was right!
Thanks guys for all the help. In the end, I used the copied the RUU ROM to the SDCARD, named it PC36IMG and restarted the phone holding volume down...the rest was automatic.
hey dreamliner did u use the 1.47 ruu or the 1.32? I am in need of the same thing but I cant get the 1.47 to run...
would this work renaming the zip and copying it to the mSD card?
http://www.sdx-downloads.com/sdx/evo/stock/OTA_Supersonic_1.47.651.1-1.32.651.6_release.zip
I cant get the RUU to extract using process manager, and only once have I gotten the 1.47 RUU to boot the device into bootloader and tried again with the phone on the HTC black screen, unplugged, re plugged and thenran it again and it was giving me the 170 usb error again.

This is the easy solution, worked for me. No need to make things more complicated by extracting the rom.zip.
As bcnice said just run the RUU and when your phone is showing the HTC logo and you get the USB error just rerun the RUU.

[Q] Bricked my DHD, please help :(

Let me just start off by saying poop.
I've been reading up on these forums quite a lot, equipping myself with enough knowledge to get going on using this phone to its potential.
After the anticipation of getting my DHD, I went about rooting it. I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076.
Everything went fine without much trouble. I completed all the steps in rooting it and gaing SU access. Also installed the Clockwork Recovery mod without a hiccup. I went on to install the Android Revolution ROM and going through the guide I used a tool called: 'Easy Wipe Upgrade.'
After installing this zip, the phone reboot and it just refuses to budge. Stuck on the HTC splash screen.
I've held down the bottom volume button with power and it gets me into HBOOT. I've tried a variety of option such as factory resets and nothing seems to be working.
My luck and phones. Just have a very expensive brick now sitting on my desk. Ah
I'd appreciate any help I can get please. Thanks.
I managed to resolve it!
Just FYI. Mounted the USB (Which was hidden fairly deeply) I guess you don't look when you panic? I then dropped on the ROM and installed it and boot up took a while but voila, it worked!
Well done, I would go mental if I bricked my phone. That's why I am still just reading up rather than trying things.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
in the exact same situation as you where Could you go into abit more detail how you resolved this? currently have no phone cheers
whats wrong with your phone mate
Just so you know, as long as you have access to the bootloader (can be stock bootloader with S-ON, doesn't matter), 99% of the time you can 'unbrick' your phone by installing a stock RUU (PD98IMG.zip method) which returns your phone to complete stock.
If you install the wrong RUU while ENG HBOOT S-OFF then you can potentially fudge up your phone for good (unless you have Radio S-OFF, then you are fine - just install the correct RUU).
So don't worry, because there is nearly always a way to go back to how your phone was before you started hacking it.

You are not supposed to rename the RUU file, rather you run the RUU file and then afterwards locate the ROM.zip file located in your temp folder. This ROM.zip file is meant to be renamed PD98IMG.zip, NOT the RUU file.
ok that was stupid of me.. ok will try to give it a go..
sorry if this sounds stupid to you again.. but, i just wana be sure.. its my first smartphone..
anyway, i run the ruu file on my pc, yeah? so then when i run it, it asks me to connect my dhd using the usb cable.. so i did... but it couldnt detect my phone.. thus, it couldnt continue it's setup.. ;-( thank you for helping out..
Make sure you install HTC Sync, it should also install all the DHD USB drivers needed.
hey, do you have any step by step guide on doing this? im afraid il do something wrong again and just risk messing up the phone even more..
i have htc sync and the htc drivers on my laptop but when i connect the usb plug to my phone and try to run the ruu.. it still gives me the prompt of no connection from the pc and android phone.. :-| what am i doing wrong? sorry...
thanks in advance for the any help!
i managed to get to the update part.. but now it prompts a 131 error message.. :-( help?

[Q] Htc Evo unsuccesful root..can you help?

My bootloader screen comes on to 2.0 but when i select recovery it shows a triangle..i tired to install RUU 3.29 and 3.70 using fasboot. It took the 3.70 but now keeps powercycling within mins after turning it on. Nand is still showing locked. Can you help please on how finish root?
You are not rooted at all. Start from scratch, use Unrevoked. Make sure to install and then uninstall HTC Sync and install the modified hboot drivers from Unrevoked if you're on a windows machine before running Unrevoked. Not sure why you are constantly rebooting, but after you get it rooted flash a new ROM and hopefully it will clear up.
Is it Unrevoked 3 or forever? Where do i get the modified hboot drivers and would it let me do this while Hboot usb because my phone doesnt stay on long enough to debug and root that way?
You get the drivers from unrevoked.com. I'm pretty sure you need to be able to turn on USB debugging and it has to run from an "on" state. Try running the 3.70 RUU again and see if that clears the reboots.
You have a link to a RUU 3.70 in zip file that you recommend because they're so many out there and I have a feeling I might of loaded the wrong one? I'll flash it in fastboot mode like the first one
Give this one a try. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MUSAURP7

Here is a handy link to bookmark http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060&highlight=hboot-0.97+ruu. It has all of the shipped roms in RUU form and PC36IMG form. Definitely a good link to keep. Hope you get the reboots cleared up. I saw a guy last week get that problem after something going wrong with using Unrevoked, and he had to exchange the phone at sprint. It would just reboot constantly, within seconds of it booting into the OS, even after multiple RUU and PC36IMG restores. At least it still shows s-on!

[Q] Stuck in recovery boot loop HTC Desire GSM ~ ASSISTANCE APPRECIATED!!

Severe panic!!
I rooted my Desire which was running 2.2 Froyo on the O2 UK network using unrevoked and it worked fine without any issues. Custom recovery by ClockworkMod.
The next day I then decided i needed to turn S-off so found a guide and tried installing unrevoked forever from a zip on the root of the SD and i got 'installation aborted error 42'. Tried again the next day but before i got started i decided to give myself re-assurance that i wouldnt lose anything on the device so i entered recovery and chose restore.
Big mistake! My handset then rebooted and got to the O2 splash screen. It wont move from there. Pulled battery out and tried again. Same. I assume i havent bricked the device and it is just stuck in a boot loop?
Since then i have removed all my user data from the SD card and 'cleared storage'. Tried installing an miui rom and again 'installation aborted'.
Can anyone clarify why this is happening and point me in the right direction?
I am a noob and would appreciate any help on this.

Try to bring you phone to stock.
Download RUU .
Turn your phone on in fastboot (hold back button and press power - when your phone is off).
You have to have HTC Sync installed.
Run the exe file.
After that repeat the rooting and s-off-ing procedure.
Can the RUU be flashed in clockwork mod recovery or does it have to go through HTC Sync?
If it cannot be flashed in Clockwork Mod, I presume he has to
Connect phone via USB to PC,
boot into Fastboot as you mentioned
run HTC Sync
and then run the Ruu.exe file (does HTC Sync recognise this filetype and then do it's thing?)
And that's it? (Just that it seems too simple!)

Right I'll let him know to give that a go. If it doesn't work I might pick your brains around the goldcard option.

Hello. I think you wanted to say you chose back-up, otherwise you couldn't have chosen the restore option since you don't have any restore points.
So if you hit back-up and your phone stuck in the boot loop it is normal. This is a problem because of the root and the fact that making a nandroid back-up will mess something in the NAND. But restoring the back-up you just made should resolve all the problems. I had the same issue and by only restoring the back-up I've just made got me working back, and still had the ROOT.
I don't think you need to run a RUU just for this.

I should have made clearer sorry. After i rooted successfully i entered recovery and hit backup option and it told me it had created a backup successfully. I had been using the phone as normal for another day before deciding to s-off and at that point i thought to 'test' my backup to make sure it had done it so i chose restore thinking anything i have downloaded on the phone since the back up will disappear and was expecting the restore to bring my phone back to the settings i had the previous day but the restore failed and thats when it got stuck in the boot loop.
Mine did the same thing except, instead of trying to s-off it just decided at one point that it felt like it, literally, I wasnt even using it at the time it was just charging. I did downloaded the stock ruu, it was linked earlier. Put it in fastboot, run the ruu and boom, however i did it on my goldcard, so make one if it doesnt work without it. Good luck.

P.s. What's the easiest way to s-off? Also whats the correct way to create a complete back up restore point and then actually restore to that point without getting to this stage again?

***NEW ISSUE***
Since i have my phone back to it's original state and have lost root access. The idea is to root again via Unrevoked, which requires me to update the Android 1.0 driver (in device manager under other devices) to the Android Bootloader Interface. However, DM now does not say 'other devices - Android 1.0' and instead it says 'Android Devices - MY HTC'. So i decided to completely uninstall HTC Sync and all it's drivers and then rebooted PC, reinstalled SYNC and then uninstalled again but this time leaving the drivers in. Rebooted again and repeated the process but it still recognises the device as 'MY HTC' instead of 'Android 1.0'.
Could it be that this is fine, it's just the new way since i am using the updated version of HTC sync now? Or is this going to cause an issue? I am now playing it a lot safer to avoid anymore issues and quite happy to try something you may suggest...

Same here. But everything is working fine.
So put phone in usb debug mode and "only charge" mode, start abd, connect phone via usb to pc and type
Code:
adb devices
. If your desire's serial number is shown, everything is fine.

Could it be that this is fine, it's just the new way since i am using the updated version of HTC sync now? Or is this going to cause an issue? I am now playing it a lot safer to avoid anymore issues and quite happy to try something you may suggest...

Thanks for the suggestions surrounding ADB but i guess im too much of a noob for that part, it seems massively complicated, im sure it doesnt to you guys. Isnt there an easier way? Or considering my above quote, can i just assume that its all working fine and go ahead with the root or should it really need to have 'Android 1.0' in device manager?
Im pretty certain this all happened becuase the first time i rooted i had followed instructions and uninstalled HTC Sync (not the drivers) which had been on my system since i got the phone lat year. Since i had to reinstall to flash the RUU im certain its an updated version of HTC Sync thats causing this issue. But is it really an issue?

Hey man thanks for the advice. If yours is working fine, ive no reason not to try it!
As i am a noob, can you clarify "start abd" ??
Also, type code "adb devices", where to type?

Here you have a nice guide about adb:

This should answer all your questions.

[Q] Did I brick it?

I think I may have bricked my Incredible...I pulled it out to put some games on it for my daughter to play. It had the latest OTA (2.3.4) and I wanted to root it. Played around with various methods to root and nothing worked. Downgraded to 2.2, and now it boot loops. If I have it plugged in, it will boot, but if unplugged it just loops. It won't install recovery from HBOOT, so I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Ok so your definitley on 2.2 now?
S-on or off?
Radio version?
Hboot version?
Does the phone vibrate 5 times when trying to power on?
Software version shows 2.2
S-ON
Radio Version not sure how to check
HBOOT .92
Does not vibrate 5 times.
Thank you very much for the help!!
I had the same issue with not booting unless plugged in. I also had 5 vibes though with it.
Just from hearing that, read through the 5 vibes sticky and see what you can do.

Tried the 5 vibrates fix, can't flash the stock rom in HBOOT and the RUU says there is a USB connection error.
Radio (baseband) version is at the top of hboot. If you have the 2.15.00.07.28 radio i would plug the phone into the pc so it boots, and then try using unrevoked to get root and s-off.
The ruu exe probably gave that error because you dont have htc sync installed which gives you the right drivers for the ruu. Im not sure why you cant get a PB31IMG.zip ruu to flash thru hboot. Does it give any errors?

I do have the 2.15.00.07.28 radio, but the USB doesn't seem to be working because unrevoked doesn't see the phone. I tried with HTC Sync installed and it still didn't work. I don't get any errors, it just won't install the PB31IMG file. I really do appreciate the help, I want to get this thing working again!!

In the phones settings do you have usb debuging checked (on) and fastboot unchecked (off). If your on 2.2 there will not be a fastboot option.
Also the drivers for unrevoked are different than the drivers for the ruu. You can get the unrevoked drivers from the unrevoked site, and the ruu drivers from htc sync. Note that to install one set of drivers, you need to uninstall the other ones first.
Also when trying the ruu thru hboot, the file must be named exactly PB31IMG.zip, and be on the root of your sdcard (in no folders).
Does hboot find the file, parse it (progress bar on the right) and then abort, or does it not find it at all?
Yes and yes.
Installed the Unrevoked drivers, but still no luck.
It finds the file and ignores it.

I would copy all the files of your sd to your pc, and then format the sdcard fat32 with windows. Then copy your files back to the sdcard and download a fresh copy of the PB31IMG.zip you can get it here http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=22, you will want the froyo one not the gingerbread. Then try flashing it thru hboot again. You said you also couldnt flash cwm thru hboot. This makes me think there is an error on your sdcard, or your doing something wrong with the PB31IMG files. If your s-off you should be able to flash an ruu or recovery thru hboot.
Not trying to call you a noob or anything but you might want to check this out http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=79.

LOL, no offense taken! This is the only phone I've had trouble with. I've owned 2 Incredibles, a DROID 3, a BIONIC, and now two Rezounds. Never had an issue rooting/flashing/etc. til now. I've formatted the sdcard a few times now, and I've tried three different sdcards. I think this phone just hates me. I have two other Incredibles sitting here, I may bite the bullet and give her one of those. I'm not s-off, could that be the problem?
Edit: It let me flash the stock froyo image in HBOOT, but I'm still in the same place. Unrevoked doesn't see the phone.

On your pc with the phone plugged in go to device manager. At the top does it say android phone, and when you expand it android adb interface or composite interface?
Other than that im not sure what the issue could be. Now that the 2.2 ruu flashed, does it still bootloop? Mabey the cable or the usb port? Do other phones work with the cable, both charging and data?
I had the issue with not booting unless plugged in also. However, I was getting the 5 vibes.
Follow the 5 vibes of death tutorial up until it says your USB should be fixed and go from there. Which is a problem you're having if I'm understanding correctly.
That's my suggestion.

I finally threw in the towel and grabbed another Incredible from my drawer of phones. This one rooted just fine and she's playing with it as I write this. Is there a way to take a nandroid backup from the working phone and get it onto the non-working phone somehow?
