[Q] Upgrading Ginger Villain releases - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi sorry I am new but a long time lurker lol.
I have GingerVillain 1.0 on my HTC Desire (UK), and I want to update it to 1.2 but I was wondering do I have to wipe everything or can I keep my apps/theme/look and feel on my phone.
ie. My homescreen and the dock icons and power bar and the background and clock and notification settings etc. Or will these all have to be reset if I want to upgrade to GV 1.2
ANy help is very much appreciated

Since you are only upgrading to a newer version of the same ROM I would imagine you would not need to wipe everything. I would say just to do a backup using recovery (Just to be safe) and then install the update. I use CM7 and when I update CM7 nightly updates I don't need to wipe everything. Hope this helps you mate.

Couldn't of said it better myself.

No need to wipe!
Works fine.

Thank you guys, very helpful and much appreciated!

started with ginger villain 0.8, updated to 0.9 and now still running 1.0 all without wiping between them.
Working fine without problems. Using villain setup.

Thanks for the help, I did this and it worked fine
One further Q I do have though is that through the update I lost my battery mod. And I swear it was in the villain setup? But its not there now..
Basically is a circle battery mod, with the percentage in the middle and dots around it that dissapear as the battery discharges.
Any ideas what mod this is/what I could get to replace it...

The Release Candidate versions have been around for a while, and they've been running on the Desire Z too.
Sorry I don't understand your request, but I recommend you check out the linked posting, i.e. the "proper" thread on the G2 forums.
Will check there. I just wondered about how to install that special patch of brokenworm.
Tried now to install the first part of CM6.1, but already failed at the nandroid backup. I installed ROM Manager, then installed there the Clockwork Recovery and rebooted into yet. But there I failed, it doesn't seem to be available in the recovery part
I also had only the choice between HTC G2 for ClockworkMod Recovery.
Ok found the issue, was missing S-OFF. Fixed it with this guide, section b) :

That's a problem with Clockwork Recovery at the moment, it's not a problem with the ROM. So it will happen with any ROM when you have Clockwork installed (it happens to me, and I have the stock ROM with Clockwork). Hopefully the developer will fix it soon.

You need to root and s-off. A good back up program would be your gmail account .
After a days use:
GPS seems to be working amazingly fast on this version
Battery life is also looking good. 77% after 8 hours,
60% after 12 hours. Lots of texts, few phone calls, 30mins internet use, few hours of listening to MP3's...seems to use no power at all in standby as well
Currently using SetCPU with standard kernel, on-demand governor:
Min: 245 Mhz
Max: 1.1GHz
Not using a profile like 245/245 when screen off which also seems to improve battery life as mentioned in other threads.
Signal strength has been much more stable (used to get a frequent drops/low signal/missed sms etc)
Thanks! Officially a die hard cm fan
Woot woot. So far, other than the standard Cyanogen features, I've noted the phone is substantially smoother than the stock HTC Sense (and even Villision's modified G2 ROM), the battery life is ostensibly through the roof (maybe it's not updating properly, but it's been idle for a few hours now and I've literally not lost a single percent of battery life :|), and in general it just feels much nicer.
That said, my SD card refuses to work, *sigh*.
UPDATE - my battery life just dropped to 99%. After 3 hours off the charger, with wifi and automatic updates on. Crazy.
Just a small question from a newbie
I want to try this cyanogen on my DZ but first... :
- Actually my phone is S-off + root + o/c kernel @ 1.4Ghz... I will do a nAndroid backup before flashing with Cyanogen, but after if for some reason I'm not happy with Cyanogen and a made a nAndroid restore... Will it restore also s-off / root and 1.4Ghz kernel on my stock rom ?
- Flashing with Cyanogen does erase any data on the SDcard ?
- Can I apply the 1.4Ghz kernel of this thread on the cyanogenmod ?
Thanks for your help

If you restore from nand phone will be as you left it. flashing wont wipe your sd card & cyanogenmod comes with overclockable kernel as standard...just use setCPU
hope this helps.

Helped a lot, thanks
I recommend you guys use the CM thread over in the G2 forum, there are a ton more people in that thread who you can share experiences with and ask for advice etc.
Agreed. I come from a Nexus One (amongst others), so anyone can ask me questions via PM or here if they need to. I'm also in the g2 section, as it's a TON busier than over here, lol. You'll find most information you need with just about everything over there.
first time trying cyanogen... kina traumatized with flashing coz i migrated from using a galaxy s...
but this rom is GREAT! super smooth, and super snappy. i'll be doing a test run with the batt tomorrow. i can usually get it to last 16 hours with a fair amount of browsing, 2-3 hours use with bluetooth stereo, and a average calls and sms. so i'm hoping this rom can squeeze out more batt life.

Any ROM suggestions?

I think i've just got my head around ROMs and all the other millions of acronyms. I do like the look of the Oxygen ROM, only i'm not a fan of the green icons in the status bar, is the colour changeable, and does anyone suggest Oxygen as a good ROM to flash for a first timer?
I must add i love the dark bar and prefer having a dark background, so silver/bright etc task bars are a no no
Cheers.
Oxygen is a great ROM, but i would reccomend u go for a froyo rom first so u got more options with themes and such. but rly its a matter of taste and what u want .. stability or experimental.
Experimental: CyanogenMod 7
Stable: eMIUI, Oxygen 1.0.4
Sense roms?
Hmm im using Sense HD port now, since everything works. its stable¨
im using InsertCoin with my own tweaks and theme
u can allways check out my FroSTeD GingerBread theme for Oxygen 1.0.4^^
Rom and theme here
BUT, if u decide to go for a Android 2.3 Rom i rly recommend CM 7, Oxygen 2 RC7 is just as good but less theming options i think.
Heres a nice theme for CM7 Rom
Clicky
I tried the insert coin 1.8 and got caught in a never ending bootloop lol.
I have Leedroid 2.3d A2SD. It's slick and stable and had no issues with it.

then u did not do it right. read the whole first page. then u can complain if u did everything 100%. ive not had 1 single rom on bootloop. to get insertcoin to work u need EXT 4 partition with 1gb recommended. its not hard if u actually read what to do istead of just trying the easy way like Leedroid is. and leedroid was boring and old news
Well im now running on Oxygen 2.3.2 which is really nice.
However...i keep getting a message saying "The application settings (android.process.media) has stopped unexpectadly. Please try again"
This is ALWAYS the case when i choose the "sound" option from the settings menu.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
It means you didn't wipe properly before installing the rom. Boot in to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache (under advanced) start up and see if the problem persists, if yes you need to do a full wipe(data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache).
Shall give it a go. Odd seeing as i did wipe it all before 0_0
Also, i assume if i factory reset, is that from the recovery menu, and then re install the ROM?
Yes, all wipes from recovery and then reflash the rom. Keep in mind all the data on the phone will be gone.
Exactly the same problem...i'm using Launcher Pro Plus if that's any help.
This is precisely why i've put off flashing ROMs for this long, to prevent naffing up my phone, and now
Well if you don't want any issues I don't understand why you would install a RC, also I'm pretty sure the fc is not a rom issue but a user issue.
If you did everything correctly you should have a normal functioning rom (except form the know issues), even with launcher pro plus cause i have the same setup.
Have you ever disabled signature verification? If yes there is a small chance your issues are caused by a corrupted zip file.
If you can't get oxygen to work and want a really stable custom rom use Leedroid. If you are done with rooting and custom rom's just run the latest RUU.
Thanks for the quick reply, where can i access the lastest RUUs to flash them from please? I may well try again at a later date, but it seems too much hassle currently with having to reset and change everything *sigh*
I've just reset to the last point using Nandroid before i flashed the ROM. I've still got root access which is good, but everything runs back to normal now.
A brief foray into the murky waters lol!
mrfish123,
Pretty sure I know what is causing your problem as I recently resolved this issue myself. If I'm right you did a full wipe before installing, but the issues started after restoring your apps (titanium backup?).
What I was doing was wiping and then restoring all apps with data. Lots of these are system settings/apps which come from the old ROM, so in effect you re restoring all the stuff you wiped in the first place.
What you need to do is:
Wipe (system wipe from recovery, and do the chache and dalvik cache too for good measure).
Install ROM
In Titanium select 'restore missing apps with data', but before you run it, go through the list and uncheck absolutely everything which is not obviously an app you have installed yourself, so anything HTC, system etc. You only want to restore your apps.
Once I did this I had no issue installing a custom ROM, and have had no problems running it for over a week.
auraxsense!
Redux-RC2.1 (Gingerbread 2.3.2) highly recommended - smooth and fast

Just got my Evo and want to get new ROM

I am wanting to put a new ROM on my new EVO. I got it from sprint the other day and want all its bloatware off of it. I am new to this but I have dont similar things in the past.
Reasons I want to ROOT and flash:
Get rid of sprint bloatware
Unlock Wi-Fi tethering ability
Get best and most optimized version of android
Now here is where I need your help...I dont really know which rom to get. Is the 2.3 Gingerbread ROM work with no bugs? I dont want to be a buggy beta tester I want something solid but something better than what I have.
Here is my phone information:
Android Version
2.2
Baseband Version
2.15.00.11.19
Kernel Version
2.6.32.17-gee557fd
htc-kernel(at)and18-2#15
Build Number
3.70.651.1 CL294884
Software Number
3.70.651.1
Browser Version
Webkit 3.1
PRI version
1.90_03
PRL Version 6067
I dont know what some of it means but if you could tell me what I should update and give me a little information on how to do it. I dont know what baseband/radio does. I dont have the latest version should I get it?
Mainly I want help on choosing a ROM to flash to. Gingerbread would be nice but if there isnt a stable version just link me to a better ROM of 2.2 to flash to. I just want rid of all this bloatware and I want to be able to theater.
Thanks for the help =)
try vaelpak 3.2, i've been using it for a while now and love it its like a mix of sense roms with asop roms but with sense base so everything works flawlesly
If your looking for a good rom that is stable and everything works. I would strongly recommend Vaelpak 3.2 RC2. I have been running this rom for about 2 months straight, well it started as RC1. Everything works and will do what you asked above. The software is still 2.2, mainly because Jim is waiting for the final versos of 3.2 to be released. Yes I have had a few minor issues, more like minor annoyance. But when one comes up I get on there forum and Jim always seems to be able to fix the issue.

Go to the dev section and find the CM thread. You need to flash the "gapps" (google apps) in order to get the google mail, market, re-sync contacts, etc. Not sure if you can do that thru rom manager, I've never used it.

There are many, many roms out there. It just depends on the what you are looking for. As for me I like having a rom that is not only stable for everyday use, but also having everything work properly. Not all roms are created equal and will vary in features. Like I stated before I love using vaelpak, but other people will swear by different roms. As for cm7, I have used it. But it just wasn't for me and screwed with my phone. As for the rooting process I would recommend Unrevoked. Very quick and simple. Also always do backups, even after rooting your phone. The other nice thing about Vaelpak over cm7, not trying to bash cm7 or its developers. But with Vaelpak there is a thing under settings were all the new radios and kernals are listed. Someone please correct me if i am wrong, with cm7 you have to flash back to a "sense" rom to update the radios. And if you cant tell I am very bias with Vaelpak, I have tryed others but they simply dont compair.

Chances are if you just got the phone it should be current or you can go under settings> system updates and update your firmware(wouldn't recommend if you plan on rooting),profile, PRL ans the software. The radios are what allows you to have service. Once again someone correct me if I am wrong.
With certain Roms (Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo comes to mind) you will need to make sure you have the latest everything. There's a link in the thread for the rom to a flashable zip - you flash this through recovery as you would a rom, kernel, etc. Read the first few posts in the thread for a rom you're going to flash. You don't want to miss something.
I flash everything manually through recovery (Amon Ra specifically, but which you use is entirely your preference) to minimize error & ensure everything that I want to wipe is wiped - properly. If you feel more comfortable with Rom Manager, there's nothing wrong with that. I recommend at least learning how to do it all manually in case you're ever in a bind.
As far as roms go - try them out... all of them. Or at least the ones that fit your needs. For stable and close to stock I recommend Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo. Warm Z is also nice, with a newer version of Sense. Vaelpak is a really great rom if you want certain Sense apps (like the dialer) but without the Sense launcher/additional useless crap. CM7 is a great 2.3 AOSP rom. It's actually stable now, but you might need to do the GPS fix if you have issues with the GPS. MIUI is another 2.3 AOSP rom, it's very polished but no 4G. It's a lot different than CM7 or any other rom. There are some "GingerSense" roms out now, but from what I've heard they're not stable at this point.
Three random tips:
1) Do not pull the battery during a radio update. After you reboot you'll see a black screen with a downwards arrow or an Android in a box. Just wait for it to finish. If you freak and pull the battery, your phone is most likely dead forever.
2) Buy Titanium Backup Pro and Root Explorer. Two most useful apps I've paid for. With either of these apps you can remove any unwanted apps (or with TB, freeze them). So if a rom comes with apps you don't want, you can easily get rid of them.
3) Don't base anything on quadrant scores, they're pretty much useless. Even if a rom puts you below average, ignore it as long as you're happy with your phone.

Cyanogen has really disappointed me. I was running mod 6 on my hero for a long time with no problems, then mod 6 on my evo with no problems. I installed mod 7 on my evo about a month ago and it has already basically crapped out on me twice. Just becoming really slow and everything force closing or just giving me a black screen when I try to open the app. Then I restore it back to right when I flashed it, and it works great for a couple weeks. I would suggest trying the vaelpak 3.2. I have no idea how it is, but I am gonna flash it right now and see how it is during the day tomorrow.

[Q] Updating Android Revolution HD

Hi,
I am currently running Android Revolution HD 5.1.7 on my DHD
I was just wondering with the new 6.1.1 version out, to upgrade to it,
do I simply download the file and just flash that to the device or must I first wipe my device? Or some other way?
Thanks for any help!
P.s Really sorry if this has already been asked but I had a quick search and couldn't see anything to this specific situation!
Back up all your data then flash the superwipe script, then flash the ROM, restore data

Thanks alot,
Also once I have flashed the rom to the phone,
Can I remove the file from my SD Card to free up some space?
Its something I have been unsure about from the first time I flashed my phone,
But I should imagine you can??
**UPDATE**
I have succesfully installed Android Revolution HD 6.1.1
But I am getting an awful lot of Force Closes now,
1 in particularly when i try to go on "People" (contacts) it instantly force closes!
Another is SuperUser, and there are a few more than insantly FC as soon as I try to Open them!

1. You can but I would recommend that you keep a copy of a stable ROM on your sd card just in case you have to reinstall for some reason.
2. It seems like the ROM is corrupted.
Did you superwipe before you installed the ROM?
If you have:Check the md5 checksum of the rom you downloaded. It should be the same as the one posted under the ROM download link in the ARHD thread. If its the same you can try superwiping and reinstalling the rom.
If you havent: Download the superwipe script from the first page in the ARHD thread, superwipe and reinstall the ROM.
Also make sure to backup your phone data before superwiping because everything will be lost. Also don't install any mods untill your device has completed the first boot after installing the ROM.
to be honest i had issues with arhd 6.1.1 when i flashed it too. not the same as yours but constant. not everybody seems to have them though and others say it has something to do with the overclock daemon. i believe there´s a patch for it though on the 6.1.1 developers thread.
i didnt bother though i just moved on to virtuous unity 2.39 and have had no problems, really smooth sense 3.0 rom. i´ve been planning to try out a non sense rom next but i really like this rom so i´ve been putting it off for a while now. i even put the beats audio patch on it a few days ago and i gotta say its pretty good even on stock htc headphones
planing to update to arhd6.1.1 too, but have ardh3.3 and clockwork 3.0.0.6. which clockwork is ok (mean which of the newest)?
I did use superwipe and i checked the md5 and it was all good!
I re-flashed the rom and now its ok
I have found out what was causing it!
It starts happening again every time I install google+ 2.0
The new version of the app that has recently been leaked on androidpolice
(Would include a link but im not allowed yet)
And the reason it did it straight from the start the first time is because, before
doing anything else, I restored all my app via Titanium Backup!
If anyone else has this issue or could try to install the app and see if it happens
to them or could figure out how to fix it, it would be great!
(Don't worry about installing it, uninstalling it stop the force closes straight away)
did you try just restoring just the app, but clean without the user data. i did that first time i flashed a rom and it caused all sorts of problems. so i reflashed and restored the apps one by one but just the app, no user data, and stopped having problems

Update from 5.1 to 6.1
Maybe I haven't looked hard enough or maybe I am simply too tired...
Are there any specific steps from updating ARHD from 5.1 to 6.1? I can't seem to find any info about it.
Also, flashing the 6.1 over the 5.1 will it reset the way my screens/widgets are set while on 5.1?
Thanks.

Advice/info... new to htc incredible

I just got my hands on the dinc. I am coming from a rooted D1. Unforuntulny the dinc has been updated and has s-on..
even searched for s-on Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms. I love it lol...
Anyways, if i have read correctly if s-on is enabled, I am just SOL in rooting my phone and using custom roms, themes etc till someone finds a workaround , correct?
Also all my game and app data on my d1, anyway to move it over to the dinc?
Updated to GB 2.3.4 and S-On? If so, I found THIS thread a few days ago that seems to be working. Before you do any of that..make sure your SD card is formatted to FAT32.
Apps yes...you can move those over to your Inc. Data would not be a good idea. The data is from a totally different phone so you would cause a lot of issues by doing restoring any app data. My friend who moved on to an Inc from a DX tried to do it and got FC's all over the place.
Good luck and enjoy your new phone!

I looked that over and it looked like it should get you back to s-off, rooted froyo. It's a LOT like the method jcase developed for the Tbolt before Revolutionary. If you can get s-off, you're good to go. Flash a custom recovery and flash a rooted ROM. Should be that simple.
thanks for the info!
Yeah, that thread works.
Thanks again guys, i got it to work last night.. Now i just need to decide on a rom? Any suggestions? I loved chevyNo1 on D1 :/

I'm not a sense guy at all but McD's ROMS are super nice.
I really liked chevy's ROMs too. CM7.1 stable and the latest incredikernel on 10/12 by Tiny will get you started in the right direction if you want to stick with AOSP or if you want something more barebones grab IncDeck 1.3 Final... I just went back to CM7.1 because I felt I got a little better batterylife.
Will give them a try. I did download cm7.1 and on re boot after install it gets stuck on the boot loader. Do I need to do a complete wipe or something ?

Yeah, complete wipe is recommended if you're not coming from an earlier CM7.

Ok I'm a little rusty cause on the d1 I never had to wipe.. in the Rom manager just select clear and wipe and that should do the trick ? I got my games backed up so that isn't a issue. But all settings and such will be lost ,correct?
Thanks

Personally, I never use Rom Manager. I flash through recovery; if you use Rom Manager to reboot into recovery, do a factory reset from there and then flash and you should be good.
Ok cool.. thanks for the quick replies.
McD's ROMS i havent seen any of those. I loaded CM7.1 Very simliar to chevyno1's rom.. Trying something different, miui right now, its not bad, reminds me of the iphone though.. Any other suggestions?
I strongly recommend against ROM manager, too. Any dev worth his salt tends to recommend against flashing through ROM Manager because it doesn't seem to do what it's supposed to. It's been a problem child for a long time now. When performing functions done through recovery, it's best to go directly into recovery to perform them. I think the same can be said for the bootloader.
Sorry i meant clockwork, dont know why i keep on saying rom manager. Can anyone help me with roms or should i post a new post on it?
I kind of dig miui but dont like the sms keyboard layout. Its like cm7 and i really like the stock dinc set up. With my big fingers i get less typos with its set up.. Any suggestions?
Here is a list of Dinc ROMs. I personally recommend CM7, but if you like HTC Sense, go for Runny Revolution 3D. Great Sense ROM.
