Hello all. I'm not new to Android or rooting. I had a Hero for a year and have flashed many roms and numerous other customizations. Also not being a noob to XDA I've been doing my research on rooting my new toy the Evo. I was confident about rooting my Hero because it seemed damn near impossible to brick. However, it seems as though this isn't the case with the Evo, or at least not with 4g. I want to root in the worst way but am fearful of permanently loosing 4g, which brings me to a few questions. But before I get there here's what I've learned through much research.
First, Amon Ra 1.80 backs up wimax.img but it's also necessary to double check that it's done properly as some have had problems with faulty md5sums. Things such as the MAC info can be restored and is available on the box or behind the battery. It's also essential to make sure that nandroid back-ups, or, at least the one containing a wimax.img is stored in multiple secure locations (I always do this with nandroids anyway). Second, if you don't have your original wimax.img which contains your RSA keys you're screwed and have to get a new Evo, which brings me to some questions.
I just upgraded to the Evo a few days ago and have all of the newest updates so is it safe to say that if I root I don't have to worry about messing with the radio/wimax for some time and can just flash roms? Are the radio and wimax radio two different things and if so how can I flash upgrades without worrying about loosing my RSA keys? What is the safest way to upgrade anything other than the roms? In other words if a new radio comes out is it best to un-root and officially upgrade everything and then re-root? Finally, because I can't seem to establish an exact answer to this:is there a such thing as totally un-rooting the Evo? By this I mean, if I follow the steps listed in some of the threads on here for un-rooting does that make everything 100% factory.
I'm paranoid about rooting also because I've switched to Best Buy's service plan which has its pluses and minuses. If I were to root and loose 4g somehow and had to take it back, I'm not sure of how much of a pain in the ass they are in comparison to Sprint. My understanding with the Hero was that it could be totally restored to factory condition by running an official RUU but I can't tell if it's the same with the Evo.
Lol, if you've managed to read all of this, you're probably thinking that I'm so paranoid that I shouldn't root and maybe you're right. However, I liked all of the root abilities I had with my Hero but didn't have the same potential consequences. Can the same be said of the Evo? Should I just wait until there's more development in solving RSA key problems?
Just go for it. Those people who are having RSA key issues have updated their radios through flashing. (I used the same tequnique but never lost my keys...no one knows what's going on yet). Go for it. You will never regret it =).
it's very simple. also squaretrade is the best deal for warranties
unrevoked + unrevoked forever, then you don't have to worry about messing up with 4g as it only flashes recovery and sets S-OFF, no changes to the stock rom or 4g.
Dont be afraid
I root evo's all the time. Some for friends, some for friends of friends who pay me a little $. The point is, I have rooted dozens of EVO's using the latest Unrevoked method. I use a MAC so I don't need to install any drivers (makes it easier).
You WONT have any problems as long as you have not flashed anything crazy to your phone (radio, wimax, etc)>
The worst that will happen is the unrevoked program will say "sorry, we did not get root, but thats normal, please try again."
Sometimes it takes 3 times and then bang you have root.
Also, I have unrooted my phone and its easy as pie.
Don't stress.
If you want some help, I can G-chat you through the whole process or help if you get stuck.
Just PM me if you want help.
To be honest all u have to do is read up on it. Google jonamerica.com(how to root)Trust me I jus rooted less than a week ago so I guess I am considered as a newbie. All in all I have my Evo running like Kentucky Derby Pro. Just gotta look past the fear that u have. If you follow those instructions correctly everything should go great. Check out other forums about rooting to confirm the steps in the link I posted for you. More than likely using unrevoked 3 nothing could go wrong. Ounce the phone is finally rooted, that's where all precaution comes into play. But there's nothing that a (nandroid backup) can't fix. Read up on that also. GOOD LUCK!!!
r0cky.Da.3v0.SU
You seem like a cautious person ... I am as well. There are lots of really bright people developing for the Evo, occasionally they push the envelope. That's ok with me, because their creativity is what makes all the good stuff available. With that said, the Sprint/HTC stock offering isn't too bad, but if you're like most of us ... it quickly won't be enough for you.
Go ahead and root ... just use good sense, and don't assume that everything that gets posted is ok ... sometimes, it takes a little time for things to shake out. For instance, I still haven't jumped to the new PRI and Wimax radio. Some have had great results ... some have been not so good. I expect to update ... but in the meantime, still enjoying all the benefits of some great custom work. Go for it ... you'll be ok.
And by the way u don't lose 4g ounce rooted. Certain ROMs that u flash don't have a 4g fix. So jus make sure u know what ur flashing.

Thanks all!!
Wow! I wasn't expecting so many responses. Rather than multi-quote everyone who posted I just want to say thanks to all of you!!! I haven't rooted yet but will get there. I'm still doing a little more research before I take the plunge.
Hypothetically, if a new Wimax radio comes out how can it be installed safely, is it best to unroot and officially upgrade then re-root? What have you guys been doing when upgrading the radios, since it seems best to not just flash them.
In the past, I've always just flashed the new radio over the rom. With the new radio that has had some problems ... it's not the process ... it's that it's not the official release. With this kind of stuff, patience is a virtue.
I was teribbly afraid too. I put 2 weeks of research before rooting. The first time I did it I messed up, but then the second time it worked. You will not lose 4g unless you are using CM6.
Get a radio that's very compatible with your rom. It will be safe to flash jus hip cache and dalvik cache and u should be fine. Male sure to nandroid backup before doing so.

I'm with you. I just purchased my new Evo on Oct 1st and it came preinstalled with OS v2.2.
I rooted my previous Hero just days after the first exploit was found and it was quite easy. The Evo rooting and rom installing process looks much different however and I'll need to continue researching this one a bit longer.
I'm not a fan of one-click root methods and would much rather stick with good ol' adb commands, so I think I'm going to wait until a new command line method comes out that works specifically with 2.2. I read about the one method so far that works with 2.2, but I'd rather not downgrade anything.
Current phone info:
OS 2.2
Build 3.26.651.6
PRI 1.71_003
PRL 60671
I have a feeling that you'll search and research for a good long while, then, like a kid on Christmas eve who just can't wait and has to shake the presents, you'll root. Then... Happiness!
Sent from my Virus Infected Evo using the XDA app.
OP - I'm in the same boat as you. I really only want to root for WiFi tethering, but then I found out that PDAnet and EasyTether allow cable tethering, with PDAnet also offering tethering over Bluetooth. So as of right now I'm still a bit undecided, but am still trying to read up on all the available options.
My advice to you (as I was burned by a bad Unrevoked patch), is wait a few days to apply things that mess with your radio. This will sort out the bugs and whatnot.
The Unrevoked team didn't test a patch properly and they killed 4g for a lot of people.
They have not updated there root tool to crack the new HBOOT 2.02. Are they done with the EVO and moving on to other newer devices? I have a few friends that just got EVO's and they cant root them now because of the HBOOT version they have. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Josh
Im sure they are working for an easy new root method patience man should be up soon

Im just glad i rooted my phone just in time w toast method before this fiascal blows up.. Sorry peeps. Wish everyone Luck!
Sent from my phone.. I think using EViO???
That's weird... Unrevoked couldn't root my phone but I used their Unrevoked forever to do the NAND unlock... I have the 2.02 HBOOT...
yeah, i rooted 2.1 style, i keep kicking myself for not rooting my wife's phone at the time and then leaving it alone, now i don't know what way to go, as i never trusted the GUI methods

Why dont you like the GUI Method? It seems to be the safest hands down. Less steps = less problems. Unless unrevoked does something i dont know about, but its worked flawless for me the last 10 times i used it. Did it the old toast way 3 or 4 times, i prefer the ease of unrevoked... not that it was hard the other way. Definitely doesn't require being kicked though lol
when i was trying to root under 2.1 version, the GUI methods didn't work, and i jacked some **** up too. i had to go all the way back with a RUU. Plus using manual method gets you used to ADB/Fastboot commands etc. If a lot more people started out that way, lot less simple questions probably wouldn't get asked. Nothing against that team, just my personal preference, when you do GUI, you don't get all the principles behind what your doing, so you just expect everything to work.

I must admit I am happy as hell as well that I got my phone when I did.... I rooted with Simple Root and have not looked back since. I rooted my phone with Unrevoked 3.21 and honestly it was the easiest thing I ever did. All you do is click a button and flawless...
I wish these new guys luck as well, oh well off to flash Caulkins 1.6
I'm totally new to Android and Rooting. But I just got my EVO 10/10 and rooted it with Unrevoked last night and installed FreshRom a few minutes ago. I had all the latest updates. Am I missing something?

What HBOOT version do you have? Is it below 2.02? That would be the reason unrevoked worked for you.
I loaded the recovery screen and it said HBOOT was 0.94.0000 Does that sound right? I just did everything I saw in a How To video. Downloaded necessary drivers etc and then did everything in order. Worked just fine. Mine didn't exactly look like the walkthrough though. It didn't say Android 1 on my Device Manager it said Android phone and to update the drivers I had to expand the Android Phone selection. Just a few minor things, otherwise it all went smooth.
I have never rooted my phones (HTC Hero now HTC EVO) but after I the update on my phone, it added Blockbuster and Nova to my phone and I can't delete either. And Nova is not even the full game, its a limited version and asks me to buy the full one.
So I would like to root my phone if possible to remove this bloatware crap.
Do I have any options via a one click method that will allow me to root and do this with a permanent root effect?
Thanks,
Whiteice
no one clicks. look in the dev forum for the fly like a kite method though. easy enough.
UnrEVOked is releasing their new version for hboot 2.02 versions very soon.
heh and we just got the new 2.10 hboot. are they compatible? probably not. if htc is going to take the time to update, it is going to have some new features.
Ack! I didn't know that updated the HBOOT too.... *grumbles about accepting update*
Unrevoked 3.21 is not working for the evo's latest release. Gotta hold tight untill some one can root this build
Looks like unrevoked has version 3.22 out. Any word on that?

^Seriously...I've been trying to find a quick root guide, but the quick root guides are not so quick lol. In order to know what you are doing, you have to do so much research to know what the heck they are talking about. I used to do customer ROMs and crap all the time with my Touch Pro 2 Windows mobile phone, it was SOOO much easier. And this is coming from a Sprint Service Tech, I've been messing with phones for quite awhile...
Personally, i just started all this root & mod stuff recently. Its interesting but very time consuming. Like you said the method may be quick but we have to do an hr's worth of reaseach to make it make sense 1st....
**Headache.....i know**
Again, i am offering a step by step walkthrough. Macs too in case those pc methods have you stumped. People deserve root! Heh. No but seriously, I will help...
Hi i have a mac with HTC evo 3.70 need root please help
I need some help in how to root HTC EVO please someone that did it , i dont want to brick my phone is the first time i am doing this. I have search in the internet but almost everything is in PC and not on a mac
i second that also i need to know how to root android 3.70 there has to be an easier way to do it than doing it the old fashion long way, help! thanks in advance!
I HAVE A THEORY THAT REQUIRES NO ADB WHATSOEVER AND I NEED TESTERS! pm or email me and i will tell you what i plan. it is as simple as using rom manager to pull a fast one on z4root then using unrevoked forever. PLEASE HELP MY CAUSE...
Have no fear guys...the new Unrevoked should be out soon. The developers have been updating their twitter page daily...and their updates look promising
www.twitter.com/unrevoked
This new update is said to work with software version 3.30 as well as the new OTA 3.70.
I'm also too chicken to try the multi-step method so I'm just patiently waiting for the new Unrevoked to be released
I'm right up there with you. Successfully rooted my hero (adb) although I'm still not sure what I was doing. I'm still trying to get all the clockwork, RA recovery stuff clear in my head, and now I'm trying to root my new evo with 3.70 ota. The new headache begins!
OK so I'm on my 3rd htc evo 4g since its release, 2nd in the last 2 weeks. something keeps happening every i root it. i used the 3step root the first time i rooted, i then proceeded to use the autoroot that's currently out the last time, the phone constantly reboots itself non stop and feels warm to the touch, really warm. does anyone have an idea on what methods i should take to root my phone and what roms to use.
the last 2 times my phone broke down was running on myns 2.2 rsl4 or w/e.
i placed this is devs because it really has alot to do with the dev of this phone, the guy at sprint just gave me my phone back and he said its been fine for 2 days with original software on it...
please move if you feel it needs to be moved.
I'm confused, is your phone already rooted or not? If your phone is overheating and rebooting I'd be willing to bet it's your KERNEL that's causing issues, not your rooting method
Yeah and I'm confused why you would be needing the new phones unless you had a real hardware issue?
first phone was rooted, it went haywire so i took it in, kid there flashed original software, phone was STILL restarting every time i played a game or w/e. he gave me new phone, rooted it, flashed myns through rom manager, restarted alot, tried new kernal, restarted ALOT more, took it, flashed original software and took root away again, new phone, currently just got it 2 hours ago....any set up ideas now?

Why don't you use it for a few days without rooting it - see what you experience? You also didn't mention what HW version and HBoot you had.... there are a lot of factors which could potentially cause something like this...
But I think the first thing you should do is do nothing. Use it without rooting and see what happens.
buy a blackberry haha
I resent people that attempt to trade in phones at their mistakes when it's just pure laziness.
I'm glad you're at least asking rather than repeating this process.
1st use Unrevoked3 to root.
Now, you should download a stock ROM to prevent from having to go into the store each time.
I'd recommend actually using this over a stock ROM anyways (it's a modified stock to run better).
And after that just browse through many ROM's, as far as kernel's I'd recommend trying Ziggy's.

I think I see your problem, you need to downgrade your PRI, the PRI is fine if you don't want to use any new kernels, but with custom Kernels you need the lower one. I had a lot of problems until I downgraded.

You don't need to downgrade your hboot, the only reason for that is to get an engineering hboot for fastboot commands and modifications, if your just flashing roms you don't need to do that. Make sure your following unrevoked very carefully, and before flashing any rom make sure you wipe eveyrthing, flash amon ra recovery and the option to wipe all is easy. So wipe all data, flash new rom and wait for reboot, takes a while now on first reboot. Also use your phone for a week to make sure its not hardware related before you root and flash.

Hello everyone!
Stupid Questions! I had the Evo since october and it was when it had the old hboot. I am getting a replacement evo because on my old one the screen broke. Now i have done some reading on the new Hboot and it seems that it will root using unrevoked. now, some of the stuff i read was from january not to old but sort of current one thing that caught my attention was that it said on the new unrevoked3.3 the super user app for root acces and permissions was having some issues is this outdated? since now its been more than a month. was wondering if there was no problem rooting my new evo because i would hate to give up some goodies of the use of root. so would i be able to root my phone normally and have no problems what so ever and use it the way its supposed to be?
thanks for your help!

You will be good to go. Unrevoked works good on all hboot versions now, and you should have no issues. I've used it a few times recently, on all different versions. There are also a few other root methods out there that work, if you're interested. Check the development section, one thread is called autoroot, and is by xhausx, the other is 'there will be root' by zikronix. You have to sacrifice nothing! happy rooting.
