Hi
newby here been doing a lot of reading and just found out that there are two types of screen for the htc desire amoled & slcd.I'm waiting for a new desire to arrive in the next couple of days and was wondering if the new slcd screen was any better of worse than the amoled one.The reason for asking is that the desire is advertised as having an amoled screen and if its better then perhaps i should return it without opening the box as it would be not as descrided in the description of the phone. Can any tell me where to look on the box to see which type of sceen it is or is there no difference in the 2 screens worth bothering about.
Thanks in advance.

well, I don't know which one is better, but on the normal box (white and tall with a full size desire on it) it says at the back.. Specifications Display 3.7-inch AMOLED touch-sensetive screen
hope this helps! good luck!
AMOLED is way better

Nope, according to what has been reported in the news and what HTC is telling everyone, the Desire now has a better battery life thanks to the new SLCD screens.
AMOLED:
+ better contrast and black levels (makes for a better looking picture)
- can't see anything on the screen when used outside or when the sun is shining on the screen
- lower battery life
SLCD:
- a little lower contrast (but still looking great and much better than standard LCD).
+ can see the screen outside in sun light.
+ better battery life.
As far as I'm concerned, a phone I can't use outside due to a useless screen is of no use to me; so I choose the SLCD over the AMOLED. Of course S-AMOLED (as found on the Samsung Galaxy S) would be the best of both worlds (great contrast and you can use it outside).
SLCD is supposed to have at least 5 times better battery life than normal LCD, I don't think AMOLED can say that.
In reality the noticeable differences between the 2 screens will be little to none, however on paper SCLD does edge it.
Here's one comparison:
http://blog.gsmarena.com/htc-desire-with-s-lcd-screen-meets-one-with-amoled-they-go-head-to-head/
In short: The SLCD allows for better battery life and improved sunlight readability, while the AMOLED produces more vibrant colours.
Hi thanks for info mines arrived and it looks like its the s-lcd screen with whats on the box no mention of amoled ,but if the battery life is better then maybe that is the way to go if there's little to chose in the display side of the screen.Just got to diside wheather to open the box and get on with it or ship ai back as no as described ie no amoled screen.
Thanks in advance.

Is it this simple to tell the Difference

To bonit2,
Welcome to the site. Didnt see your post as must have been updating mine when you made yours.
Will be trying the update tomorrow so its a case of "suck it and see"
Once done will re-post on sucess/failure.

Hi, I know this sounds stupid. But can you post a copy of the back of the box showing the difference, I have included a screen shot of my (I assume) Super LED box.
Until reading this forum I was about to try the Froyo update but have seen that there are different versions for the different screens, and without this forum would have tried the *Wrong Version*.
If this version info is wrong let me know as dont want to **** the phone up.

Hi! my first post here.
not to add more to the confusion but i have the same print in the box as yours and mine is still AMOLED display.
At first i thought it was SLCD and having nothing to compare it with, i bit the bullet and root using the one for AMOLED. no display blackout and all went well.
my guess is that the print in the box was to prepare for the roll out of the S-LCD even if there are still AMOLED display on stock.
of course you may have a real S-LCD so good luck.
I have the amoled screen and i can ALWAYS read my screen outside and very easily too.
Why do some people keep misinforming others that amoled screen is unreadable outside or in the sun ?!

Hi!
I already test both Desire with Amoled and S-LCD and forget S-LCD...If you try Amoled first you will never go back trust me.
I love Amoled. You will never see the differences if you don't use it, and forget youtube comparative videos because you will not be able to detect the real differences...
For me Amoled it's much better and if you want to save baterry just work with sync settings...Why sync gmail contacts, facebook contacts, weather... every 1 hour?
Amoled or S-Amoled but only on galaxy I think for now...
To check if my Desire is AMOLED or SLCD

If amoled is not specified in the specs it's SLCD.
about screen
the same situation, bought a phone in mediaworld and back on the box says "schermo sensibile al tocco da 3.7 polici" this means that the sensitive ekranb 3.7. diagonal. this also means that the screen SLCD?
then you can link tyknut where indicated as do root for SLCD screens?
thanks
There is an article regarding this on Engadget.

I rang the freephone number for the UK and spoke to tech support.
They asked for the IMEI number and told me that I had the Amoled screen.
However my packaging "Didnt" have the amoled wording on it, and was told that the packaging had been changed before the screens had and some people had the "wrong" boxes.
So if you want to know what you have, just ring them and they will tell you.
Also if you got your phone before the middle of July it "Should be Amoled" again tech support (UK) words, cannot say for elsewhere.
Hope that clears things up. Lol..
Ah, nice Odinbear, that's some good info you got there.
Happy to help

Cheers, BigMango.
Sometimes its so easy to get lost in the detail of making a problem difficult that the simple answers get overlooked.
I have always found HTC tech support (UK) very helpful and believe that most of them are members of this site LOL..
If theyre not they should be.
I cracked my screen and i dont have the box...... so how would I tell without opening it up, which one I have?
Just if I have to open it up and let it sit there for 3 weeks Id forget how I would put it back together
If you got your Desire after August (I think) or September then it would be SLCD otherwise it's AMOLED.
hey guys, I just got my Desire (loving it).
I got it without it's box. I know it's probably a stupid question, but I did a search on this, couldn't find an answer. How can I tell whether its SLCD or AMOLED?
my HBOOT version is 0.83, I noticed most SLCDs come with this version or 0.92, but its not enough for me to tell.
Any idea?
Thanks
hey, there is one way to check, the slcd screens use backlight which remains on when the screen is on. if you get a complete black picture, pure black picture, on the amoled it should look like the screen is off but if u got the slcd you can still see the backlight behind the lcd.
hope this isnt a stupid answer
still new to all this

thanks guys!
I'll tried to see how the screen is in total darkness (camera) still it wasn't really clear as it seems dark enough for me, no grayish stuff. However, I'll try to magnifier thing posted in the link above tomorrow.
Many thanks!
The Amoled screen will have matrix of visible dots about an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch apart on the unpowered screen if viewed at the right angle. The SLCD does not. How do I know ? I bought the 3rd one sold at the store on release day and just bought 2 more a week ago. They are different.

no it's the best way to check
Also you can simply look at the keyboard. If all the letters are perfectly clear, its an slcd. If it looks as if its an lower resolution and unclear you have the amoled

Mine is slcd and isn't clearly visible in sunlight, .... amoled more clearly you can see?
You can also look on the box, if it says 3.7" touch sensitive screen, it is slcd, if it says 3.7" amoled touch sensitive screen it is amoled

Hello, guys, so during my use to another galaxy (Galaxy S plus) i saw that he has more light and its more colourfull than our phone at 100% brightness , and saw this light with new phones to (like , S3 MINI, S3 , S4 etc) !!
Is that possible that our phone is so bad at light, or just any sensor at my phone does not work ?
OK im talking about light sensor, does this phone have one ?

It has got no light sensor. I suppose you know that all the other phones you mentioned are using AMOLED displays, right? Ancora is using a TFT display (and a pretty good one, in my opinion). About the brightness, I don't think I ever had any problem with that. So, unless you want extremely good visibility in direct sunlight conditions, I believe you will have no problem with Ancora's display brightness. As for the color reproduction, AMOLED displays are known for over saturating them. Some love it, some hate it. It's a matter of taste really. Personally I like it.
Also, this kind of questions might have been better asked in the Q&A section here in my opinion.

In direct sunlight conditions, any TFT will fail. That's just the way it is. It's not the phone, it's the display technology behind the LCD panel.
It has no connection to the firmware, the ROM or the baseband. XXLM8 is the baseband I use but again, that has absolutely nothing to do with the display being able to withstand direct sunlight better than an AMOLED one.

You're welcome. If that low contrast in direct sunlight conditions bothers you so much, yeah, I think you will need a phone with an AMOLED display for better results.

I compared my present S3mini with my prevoius SGW. The S3mini is having an AMOLED display as you already know. Those displays are having a warmwhite color, so the white is more yellowish compared to the SGW. The SGW was brighter than the S3mini when set the brightness to max. and it was better seen in sunlight. Plus the coldwhite produced by the LCD in the SGW is letting pics to appear more natural.
Oh and just by the way. Both to not have a light sensor and I´m not missing it. Neither missed it in the SGW nor in the S3mini.
So all in all the LCD display build in the SGW is really good and doesn´t have to hide behind a AMOLED display. There are even some advantages in using LCD´s over AMOLED´s. Of course an AMOLED has more saturated colors compared to an LCD but there is also an other side of the medal.
AMOLEDs are matureing faster. LED´s (used for the backlicht in LCDs) are getting mature too and loosing their brightness, but for AMOLEDs this is going to happen much faster. This has two reasons. One is because the pixels are organic and secound because of it´s size. A backlight LED has a much bigger size compared to a pixel in an AMOLED display. Because there each pixel is a single O(rganic)LED.
So let´s say after 10 years your LCD will only have 80% of the brightness it had at the beginning an AMOLED can be at 60% or even worse.
Last but not least. The very first OLED displays matured that fast you hardly could see something on them after 1/2 year of usage. (Had a MP3 Player with such a display)
Hey!
So, I dropped G3 on the ground today, and my screen is shattered + only like 4mm at the lower part of the screen is responsive while the remaining 5,4 inch (... ) isn't . The screen is working as in it is displaying things but it isn't responsive. Anyways, I was looking on the forum for topics about replacing a screen etc.. but I couldn't find any answers on my question.
Which is, is it safe to buy a screen+digitizer+ frame from ebay?.
I'm thinking about buying this one : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Grey-LG-G3-...043316?hash=item2a4e0c1db4:g:lBMAAOSwBahVD-n1
But i've heard/read that some screens may come in 1080P instead of QHD.
Would that be an actual problem if it turned out to be a 1080P screen? I don't mind having a 1080P screen tbh. My previous phone (Xperia Z) had a 1080P screen and I couldn't spot any difference between the 2 screenresolutions.
so,
Is it safe to buy a screen+digitizer+frame from ebay?
if yes, and if it did turn out to be a 1080P screen, would my phone still work properly?
:fingers-crossed:

I kinda want this phone for all the mods ... but i can't find a single good example of it due to the rubbish AMOLED display. Would it be possible to replace it with a similar IPS display?

Why would you want a IPS display? It uses more power than AMOLED and AMOLED looks much better I have a Moto X Pure and the Z2 has much richer and deeper colors.

Not true there are some on eBay for $100 with no screen burn in. IPS screens don't burn in but the pixels can get stuck so no device is fail proof.
