[Q] Backups into "ROM" - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys just a quick thought i had, is it possible to make a backup file into a flashable rom?
So if you had a whole bunch of HTC Desires and you setup a really nice quick ROM with all the apps you wanted and email accounts, everything... could you save it to a .zip or something and flash it to another phone?

I don't think so. But you could copy the nand backup across and restore on a number of phones.
Assuming they were all the same spec..

Clockworkmod/backup

Hi,
I need advice what is-not-possible if I delete the backup file inside the folder. I am using backup apps nowadays.
These filed are very big in mega byte size.
Thank you.

If you flash a rom and something goes wrong then you will have two options to wipe and start again or restore your backed up rom and data .....useful if you like to flash custom Roms alot, or if you like to modify your phones boot, splash etc and then want to revert back

The reason it's big is because it's the backup of your stock ROM. You should NEVER delete this as you may need it in the future if something goes wrong with your handset.
It is not purely a back up of apps on the phone, it is the backup of the operating system that the phone cannot run without.
If you delete it and you brick your phone somehow, then you have small chance of getting it back again.
Nah it is not that serious, a full wipe + custom rom will restore a phone just like a nandroid backup would.

True, but what if you want to revert it back to stock in order to send it back to your carrier if you have a hardware problem that needs fixing?
Thank you for you reply. I will keep one the oldest copy.

to be on the safe side, keep a backup of your stock ROM and all of your installed ROM on your SDcard and on your PC/Portable Drive. If you upgrade your custom ROM, delete the old one on your SD to save space. Anyway its just 800MB on your stock ROM plus 400-600MB on your custom ROM

[Q] Tidying up restore list in CWM

I've backed up my phone quite a few times and now want to tidy up my restore list so I only have one pointing to the original HTC Sense restore and another pointing to the custom ROM I've chosen. Is there a way to do this? Also has anyone any idea what size each back up is?
Thanks.
Either delete them with a file explorer (sd/clockworkmod/backup) or use rom manger. Size depends on rom and how much apps where installed.

Nandroid Backup Help

My current HTC Desire has a broken sensor so I will be going to get it replaced with a new one tomorrow, will most likely be another HTC Desire.
So I found this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733640
Just want to confirm what I need to do.
On my current phone, copy the nandroid folder to my SDCard, and then move it to my computer.
Once I have my new phone. Root it, do a nandroid backup.
Then take the old phone nandroid backup and rename it to the new nandroid backup.
Then do a restore on the new phone with the old renamed nandroid backup?
Also, if I happen to get a different phone (they say if they are out of my current model they give a different one) is there anyway I can use my old nandroid backup?
you don't need to rename anything.. just put the old nandroid folder onto your sd (that's what it's called if you use Amon Ra recovery anyway) and then restore.
AFAIK no, you will not be able to use your nandroid for a different device for multitudes of reasons... it would be like trying e.g. to flash a DHD ROM on a Desire... just wouldn't work.
Awesome thanks
Went to backup the nandroid folder and I can't seem to find it.
Where exactly do I find it?

[Q] Cyanogen 7.1 and HTC Sence

Hello, I have HTC Desire HD. I rooted the phone with Ace Hack Kit and installed Cyanogen on the phone. I have a few questions:
1. I did a rom backup with all my apps installed with ROM manager just before I did the install. Then I did the factory erase and did a rom backup again saving it under a different name. My question is when you do a rom backup does it backups everything such as your apps, messages in inbox...
2. On HTC I had HTC sence so If I lose my phone I would be able to trace it and lock it or erase it. Can I install this on Cyanogen?
3. I had some messages in inbox, but they didnt come back when I synhronized. I was wondering if they are stored somewhere in the rom backup and if I can extract them back or I can just install the rom backup?
Thank you all for help
1. Do not know about the sms/mms, but it backs up everything apps ect, and you will find those in clockwork recovery / restore / advanced restore / system /data (i think)
2. Go to the market and install Cerberus, its classed as a free app but it does ask for a 2euro donation to unlock all features, which is the cheapest app on the market for what it offers you in protection with out any monthly fees ect.
3. Text messages are not synced with google servers, if they are stored on the backup i dont know what they would be under maybe someone else can help you out with that one, but imo they are only text messages, im pretty sure it wont be long before someone else texts you again. (You could always in the future use smsbackup and just make a backup before you flash a new rom again)

Transferring root & backup to anothe phone

Hi
I have the HTC Desire which has been rooted. A few months ago I did a nandroid backup. It was rooted with the cmr2 hboot and a runnymede rom
over the weekend I managed to drop the phone in water! I'm not holding out much hope for it working again.
So I want to ask - can this back up/data be transferred to another phone at all? Or how can I get to the data? I can get to the Hboot in recovery mode
Thanks
Manny
Your nandroid backups are stored in the clockworkmod folder. Just get it from there as for transferring data into another phone, you will have to unpack the data.img file. Then adb push them manually into the new phone

I believe there is such a guide on XDA. You can try searching extracting from nandroid with unyaffs or something like that (tapatalk doesn't work well with searches ) the file for extracting is here http://db.tt/mM2YDjDE.
Yes you should be able to transfer the backup. But you will not be able to restore it from recovery. You must either use the method in the 2nd post or use titanium backup's extract from nandroid function to restore your apps and data but I don't know if that's a pro only function or not as I have the pro version.
Possibly if it's a pro only feature and you don't have pro, you can see if the play store has another such app that allows you to do the same
