Attempted to Flash: Phone blinks on the htc quietly brilliant screen
I used unrevoked and Cyanogen 7.0 rc not a daily build.
I very carefully followed all the instructions posted and after flashing the rom i ended up with a phone that boots then flashes the HTC quietly brilliant screen over and over at me.
I can still access Hboot but i've been unable to progress from there. Any suggestions on how to proceed?
I used to flash custom roms all the time for windows mobile but this is my first time bothering to for android. I can't really see what's gone wrong here yet and the thread with similar issues to mine are vague with little helpful info.
Oh, I do have a nandroid back up safely saved on my computer. I'm reading up on what to do with that.
Edit:
Well... Looks like things worked out. While reading i just left the phone on the flashing Quietly brilliant screen and eventually the phone booted up.
I took the opportunity to reflash clockworkmod. Looks like things are going to be ok now but the whole experience has me a bit gun shy until i have more information.
From what I read i was stuck in a boot-loop but I have another theory too. Is the flashing HTC screen "normal" during an install since customs roms may lack their own flash screens?
Clarification would be nice.
Almost all ROM's have splash screens and boot animations included (I don't know any that don't).
CM7 definitely does, they actually have a pretty sweet boot animation. If you're not seeing that then I would suspect that your flash didn't go 100% right, maybe you didn't fully root and turn S-OFF.
The HTC quietly brilliant usually only popped up on the stock ROM whenever I did something dumb (like uninstall a major piece of the UI) that would prevent the launcher to load.
That does not come up as a default splash screen or boot animation, so a bit weird that it showed up for you.
If everything is all worked out now then that's good to hear.
The more I read the more I think I managed to install Cyanogen as my recovery or at least attempted to. I think i'm very lucky to have not bricked my phone. None of the tutorials out there clearly go over the difference between a recovery install and a rom install. If there is indeed a difference.
Yes there is a massive difference.
Recovery is basically the backbone. You use this to manage your phone so you can flash new ROM's, Kernels, make backups, restore backups, clear out different cache's, SD card, etc.
How did you root your phone?
If you used unrevoked then you should have the clockwork recovery already installed (boot with holding volume up button).
Yep, i dodged a bullet. All ended well though. Cyanogen 7 rc is installed safely with clockwork recovery onboard to save my ass if i screw up again.
Good to hear

After messing with a custom ROM downloaded from ROM Manager, I wanted to go back to my original stock 2.2. However, when I went to do the restore of my most recent backup (done before I flashed this most recent ROM) it tells me that the MD5 sum has a mismatch and won't do the restore.
So after doing some research, I try and do a clean restore of the stock 2.2 RUU .zip, but HBOOT tells me that the PB31IMG.zip is out of date and won't do the update.
I have no other backups on my SD card or anywhere else, and I've flashed the phone to a different ROM that was downloaded to my SD card so I at least have a functioning phone. However I want to bring it back to stock in case I have to send the phone to Verizon at some point.
Security is set to S-ON for those who need to know.
Any assistance on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That worked! Restoring my backup now! Thank you!
Ok, after fixing the MD5 error and restoring my backup (and clearing the cache/data/etc) It shows the "HTC Incredible" screen, but then goes black and shows nothing at all. All buttons are unresponsive and a battery pull is necessary to get back into recovery.
What might be happening here?
I've been having the same exact problem. My phone is almost unusable right now after loading a 2.3 ROM onto to it just to see how it worked. I backupped my files and clear my cache before hand, but when I load into HB Boot and click recovery, the phone vibrates, displays the HTC logo, then goes to a black screen with two white bars on the sides. It is unresponsive and requires a battery pull.
I can reboot the phone and get into the 2.3 ROM, but it is slow and buggy. No android market, lots of force closes, and won't load my google account.
I assume the problem has something to do with Clockwork MOD recovery. Any ideas out there?

Actually it does sound like CMR, check the lastest unrevoked rooting thread to get the image and how to install it. This usuallly occurs with the slcd screens. If i'm wrong someone else let me know.
You can go here to get the SLCD recovery: http://www.incredibleforum.com/foru...nly-see-black-screen-white-bars-recovery.html
worked liked a charm. Thanks.
I have a rooted (Supersonic EVT2-2 SHIP S-OFF; HBOOT-0.93.0000) EVO that I'm running Warm 2.2 RLS 4 on. I have it set up the way that I wanted and it is running perfect (enough for me).
Yesterday, I caught a glimpse of the MIUI ROM that has an iPhone theme so I wanted to try it out. So, I used Titanium to back up my apps and data to my SD card (8GB with 3GB open). Then, I went to ROM Manager to back up my ROM. I saw that there was an update for the ClockworkMod Recovery so flashed it up to 3.0.0.5. Then I went to Backup Current ROM, kept the suggested name, and hit OK. After a few seconds, the Splash Screen (white HTC EVO 4G) briefly shows, the phone buzzes and then I'm on the initial Bootloader menu screen (with the three Androids at the bottom).
I highlight Bootloader, then I hit the Power button to go to the next set of menus, and the phone does it's checks. After the checks, I push the Volume Down button to go to Recovery, then hit the Power button. The splash screen shows again, the phone buzzes, and I'm back at the initial Bootloader screen.
Whether I use the Quick Boot app, the ROM Manager app, or the Power and Volume Down method, I cannot get past the Bootloader screen to get into Recovery. All I get is Splash, buzz, then the initial Bootloader. Warm 2.2 RLS4 is a nice stable ROM, but I am starting to feel limited, which is why I rooted the phone a few months ago.
Could someone PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZSSSSSSEEEEE help me with this? I have been reading forums and Googling this issue for hours and I can't find an answer. I am far from a comp engineer, but I can follow instructions pretty well.
Thanks a million!
Try using ROM Manager to reflash your recovery, that should fix it for you.
Fourth times the charm! WHEEWWW!!!
It's seems to be working now and I'm backing up my ROM as I type. I went into ROM Manager and flashed it again and this time I went into Recovery straight from ROM Manager (I had did it indirectly via the ROM backup before) and I saw a orange and black menu, instead of the green and black. COOOLLLL!!!!
I tried to go into recovery from the Quick Boot app and that works too, NIICCEE!!!
I guess after you flash the ClockworkMod Recovery, you have to "initialize" it by going to it directly from ROM Manager, or else any other method you try won't work? I'm not sure but it seems like it.
A good lesson, glad I can fully enjoy the EVO again.
Cheers!
Glad you got it figured out
i am new to the forum and i am looking for some help i have a htc desire unbranded and it is stuck on the htc splash screen it is on hboot 0.93 and i have tried downgrading but it keeps coming up main version is older i can get into fast boot but not recovery i have been reading a lot of threads but cannot figure it all out as there is so much information i'm chasing my tail tail lol if anybody can help me i will be very grateful.
Why are you trying to downgrade? You could use an RUU as a quick fix but it will wipe everything. You haven't given any details of what you tried to do or are wanting to do.
i believe i have to downgrade to hboot 0.83 to get the phone to work but im not sure i have tried a lot of ruu's but cant seem to find the right one i'm very confused by it all to be honest i'm stuck as to what to do
It would also be helpful, if you used a little bit more correct grammer (putting punctuation between each sentence) as much as possible. Some of us, can't understand what you're talking about. This isn't FB or an sms
Also, it would help. if you said exactly what you did, and how you got into this situation. Ie; flashes, etc.
For example, are you rooted? Were you trying to flash a custom ROM?
htc stuck on boot up
Sorry i am not the greatest writer. I was on 2.1 and upgraded ota to 2.2.then the phone started resetting itself. before not booting altogether.i am currently on rom image 2.29.405 hboot 0.93 .and thats as far as i know.
htc stuck on boot up
The phone just hangs on the white htc screen.and wont go into recovery.
First of all, you have a desire. Before running any update, you need to create a Gold Card. It's not specific to "all" desires. But, better safe than sorry.
http://www.droid-den.com/android-guides/android-guide-how-to-create-a-gold-card
To boot into recovery the manual way, turn phone off.
Hold volume down, and press the power button.
This should boot to recovery.
If you get the Triangle, with exclamation mark,
press Vol Up + Power
This will bring you to another recovery menu where you can : Reboot , Flash from sd , Wipe Data/factory ,Wipe Cache
If you can recover the system, I highly suggest creating the Gold Card.
And one more note, if you decide to flash to a stock RUU, I highly recommend wiping all cache memories before flashing. Yeah, I know they will tell you that it's not necessary, but hey, I believe in overkill.
htc stuck on boot up
That's the thing it wont go into recovery, I can go into boot loader and fast boot but when i press up and power it goes back to the htc screen and hangs there again, i have tried a ruu which seemed to be successfull but it still hangs on the htc screen and will go no further.
If you can't get into any type of recovery, just how are you able to flash?
Bear with my stupidity here.
Without a menu system in any type of recovery, I am at a loss.
However, I have heard, that, some people put their phones in the freezer for several minutes. And that the phone would boot. Enogh where they col=uld goto recovery, and fix what they messed up.
Now, I would suspect it;s because the processor was overheating during boot. Probably because cache memories weren't wiped before flashing, and crap got all messed up.
Normally, I would never suggest this. And you do this at your own risk. So if it's messed up beyond repair, please, do not blame me,
htc stuck on boot up
I went into fastboot usb then ran the 2.29.405 ruu which completed successfully,i even extracted the pb99img.zip file and updated that way but still no luck, ill throw it in the freezer for 5 and give it a whirl, who knows might work. and thank you
The freezer thing, is a last ditch effort. And it is only a temporary thing. 15 minutes max. Maybe enough to allow you to clear caches and flash.
I have run out of expertise. So, I have nothing more to offer...
I tried to flash the latest (at that time) Synergy Rom on Sunday. I had been trying out Sense 3.0 Roms since being on Cyanogen for 3 months and low in behold after flashing and rebooting, the phone hung on the splash screen, wouldn't even get to the boot animation. I pulled the battery out to reboot and kept doing the same things. So then i just figured I go through bootloader to get to recovery. When I hit recovery, the phone hung on the splash screen and thus I was forced to report my phone lost because I use it for work and was able to get a new one the next day (had to pull out my old bb 8530). The phone charges, but it will not do anything when powering on, or hitting recovery but go to splash. Once again when i try to go into recovery, it won't get there.
Any Help Please.

You need to reflash your recovery. Is it just hanging at the splash screen, or is it rebooting at the splash screen?
Download this PC36IMG I attatched (it's Amon RA recovery v2.3). Place the file on the main directory of your sd card (you'll probably need to take the SD card and use a card reader to get the file on the card....or put the card in another phone with an sd slot if you have access to one...just get the PC36IMG.zip file on your card). Once it's on the card and card's back in the phone, boot to your bootloader. It should scan and find the PC36IMG then ask you to update...select vol up to say yes. Should finish in 10-15 seconds. Then when it asks you to reboot, say no. Now from the bootloader menu, choose recovery. Do you successfully boot to recovery now, hopefully?
Ok, I got that, I put cyanogens latest release candidate from 5/5 on the card, I have Ra's recovery up, i guess i jumped ahead and the install aborted, tips please.

So what part aborted? When you were flashing the rom? Just to clarify, you did successfully get the recovery flashed, right? Now it's the rom you're having trouble flashing?
If so, I'd be sure that you don't have a corrupted download. Check the md5 checksum, or simply try redownloading it and trying again. Good luck.
It starts to install the ROM, then it all of a sudden aborts after getting 50-75 percent complete. I'm trying RC 7.3 now, wala, it worked, well i have an extra evo now i need to figure out what to do with it. BIG THANKS.

You're welcome, glad you got it squared away.
As far as having two Evo's...just be careful. If I'm not mistaken, when you report a phone lost or stolen to Sprint, they will make the ESN bad. I'd check into that, to make sure that one them doesn't have a bad ESN. I didn't even catch that part of your OP that you had already gotten a new one, lol.
So I guess that will make the phone useless if I give it to my father in-law.
turn it back in n say u found it...in other words the right thing
after doing amon ra3.0.7 nandriod
sorry if question is silly. but last night i flash from cwm to amon ra 3.0.7 everything went good, rebooted phone fine. i rebooted into recovery did a nandriod back evrything fine. i did a reboit to recovery wipe everything except sd card and flash a custom rom and rebooted fine. i went back into revovery did a nandriod backup went fine. i went to reboot my phone and its stuck at splash screen. I've been running a Sense ROM the last few days and wit the 3 different Sense Kernels I've flashed, I got stuck on the ROM's Splash Screen, had to do a battery pull and reboot and it was fine.
That could be your problem right there.

it was me i jump the gun after i flashed custom rom. i di all kinds of mods then i tried to nandriod. md5 check sum mismatch, so i just wiped everthing except sd card, reflashed custom rom its all good now. By the way thanks for your input about cwm being junk you were right amon ra is awesome, no more cwm for
I used the GN Toolkit V2.2 to unlock the bootloader, after installing the adb drivers via PDANet. I flashed Clockwork Mod on as well, and was going to install the Android Revolution ROM. I thought I had already copied the zip file to the internal storage, but when I tried to flash it from inside CWM, it said no files were found. (May have copied it before wiping device, I can't remember). So I restarted so I could copy the zip file again and then flash it. However when starting, it seemed to be stuck on the startup screen, with all the flashing blocks of color fading in and out. After a while stuck on there I couldn't do anything so I did a battery pull to restart. At this point, I can start normally or into recovery mode. If I try to start normally, (or go into recovery mode and choose restart from the submenu), it shows the black screen with the white Google logo, and the unlocked icon, stalls for a few seconds, then does a short vibrate and reloads the logo again. It will keep doing this and not go any further. I tried doing an additional data wipe from recovery mode but that didn't help, and I tried to do USB mount from recovery mode, hoping to copy the Revolution zip file and flash it over, but it couldn't mount. I'm starting to panic a little bit, did I brick or otherwise mess my phone up? What can I do? Any help is REALLY appreciated.
Thanks so much and I hope this is the right forum.
I dont have the answer but I wanted to post to calm you. This happens a lot.....multiple times to me on my android devices. You live and learn next time, do a backup in cwm before wiping data and flashing new stuff
Im sure someone will post shortly to solve your problem
Well ok that is reassuring thanks. I downloaded the Google factory ROM from the code.google.com and was able to flash that on my phone with GN Toolkit. It is trying to boot right now, still on the colorful screen. I think maybe I didn't give it enough time last time around? At least I'm past the black and white logo screen. So I'll let it sit for a few minutes and see what happens.
Edit: I let it run for a couple minutes, and it blacked the screen for a sec, showed the white Google logo again, and then went into the colorful startup screen again. I think it's working now so that's a relief.
If someone finds this thread in the future with a similar issue: Don't battery pull during start up and be patient if you don't want to freak yourself out haha. But as spitefulcheerio said, it will be okay so just don't panic. Thanks again.
Make sure you do a Factory Reset in STOCK recovery after unlocking the bootloader. THEN install CWM. learned that one the hard way. skipped a step after doing the oem unlock.
Yes, first time will take awhile on the boot animation.
And, as long as you see the google logo, you are ok, even if it freezes on that. They designed this phone to be easy

Guess all I needed was a psychological confidence boost, thanks for everyone for being supportive I thought I just threw a few hundred bucks away. But I got Revolution installed, phone and rooted and runs like a dream. Thanks all around!

To provide some technical details on why it takes longer the first boot and appears to "hang" at boot animation ...
During the boot animation, the /data/dalvik-cache directory is built up for each application loaded on the device. This occurs during the very first boot. If the /data partition is wiped, the dalvik-cache directory is also wiped and will have to be rebuilt on the first boot. All subsequent boots will be quicker as this directory has already been populated.
Whenever loading a new ROM or performing the fastboot oem unlock command, the /data partition is generally wiped which takes with it dalvik-cache and results in the delayed initial boot time while the dalvik-cache directory is re-populated.
Hope that makes sense and fills in a few blanks on the why Android appears to "hang" at the boot animation during first boot after the /data partition is erased or the /data/dalvik-cache directory is erased.
