[Q]Battery lasting suggestions

I had the Thunderbolt with OEM extended battery, AOSP rom (TH3ORY roms), and imoseyon's lean kernel and used to get over 24-30 hours of battery life.
I've tried the 4.0.2, 4.0.3, and 4.0.4 with imoseyon and franco's kernels and still 7-8hrs is all I could hope for my Galaxy Nexus(stock battery). I've ordered the bigger battery with Costco but not here yet. Any suggestions other than the obvious: (please add to the list and I will update this original post)
1- Keep on AUTO brightness
2- avoid widgets
3- use a custom kernel (which one?)

I use francos with CM9. I always have everything switched on (Data, Sync, Wifi, GPS) and it only goes to about 50-40% after a days use and I consider myself a heavy user.

As for using an extended battery, am I right in thinking that its only a 10-15% increase in capacity?

I have not had the extended battery yet, I will let you know when I get it. Do you change anything in Francos's kernel? I had a terrible experience. Isn't CM9 just a nightly release? Stable?
What radio are you using? I'm on the 4.04 radio

Hi guys, new here. I'm on the same boat as you on the battery, I'm running AOKP25 with Franco Kernel 18... I run a Hyperion 2000mAh battery and get about 8 hours with normal use , WiFi on, GPS off, Screen Brightnes on Auto, some whatsapp, emails, a couple of calls, a bit of browsing, and about an hour worth of reading in the kindle app... I know this should last longer... any ideas?
I can't post pic of the battery usage because I'm new but it basically is:
Screen: 57%
Android OS: 26%
Voice Calls: 4%
Phone Idle: 4%
Cell Standby: 3%
Browser: 2%
MediaServer: 2%
Android System: 2%

I'm on the latest European radio (cant remember the code).
No I don't change anything in francos, but you can if you want to boot it some more.
And yes CM9 is just a nightly but super-stable still in my experiences, definitely worth trying for a week or two.

I'm on a gsm nexus stock battery running codename with francos kernel. 18.4. I just had a super heavy day, 12 hours and I'm down to 13 percent. 3 hours screen time plus 3 hours playing music with poweramp while the screen was off. No wifi - 3g hspa all day. Kernel set to 700/1000 conservative. Running juice defender on aggressive. 1 push email and one email set for once every hour.
If you are not getting acceptable battery life after running a custom rom and kernel with juice defender (not even sure if it helps) then download cpu spy and see if you are making it to deep sleep. 99 percent of the time it is an app.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do also think there is something that is causing this. I do get a heated screen also at times. I am running the FA02 for both CDMA and LTE which is the latest radio. I did change to franco's kernel but may go back to CM's stock if I don't find anything.
Also, I'm on 4G 24/7. No 3G area where I live and work anymore (Chicago) which is great but I think it eats up battery. Will report my findings after cpu spy.
Used 10% in 1 hr and 30 minutes.

Most definitely suggest CPUSpy. Another option is BetterBatteryStats to find out what has your device in a partial wakelock. I had an issue with my Desire Z prior to moving to the Galaxy Nexus where a piece of software attempting to access the GPS would get stuck in the background, and cause a partial wakelock. Going from 20+ hours of usage down to ~11 was a bit of a downer, but BetterBatteryStats helped me find the problem.

My battery is pretty bad too. I'm running Apex (latest) and the lean kernel (latest).

I have frozen the maps app as well ( this was a major battery drain as it would constantly reopen) but it only gave me ~1 hour more.
Thinking of swapping out for CM9.

Mine is still crazy bad...today I got 6 and a half hours of battery with even less activity as yeterday...I installed CPUSpy and mine does go into deep sleep state ,so nothing is keeping it awake...I'll update to AOKP26 and Franco Kernel 18.6 and report back...

Try running Codenamed Android and Franco Kernel.. I'm on my second day with this setup, and I'm really getting impressed. Running the stock battery. I have an extended one waiting to install once I've maxed out usage with the stocker.

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I would add to this one. My battery life just went from acceptable to abysmal and I also don't know why. I'm running latest Codename ROM with latest Franco kernel along with Gapps from 2/18. Kernel was installed after wiping cache/dalvik. I am lucky to get 12 hours without even touching the phone. I'm no expert on radios but it looks like your signal sucks (all yellow) which can cause an insane drain on battery. Download cpuspy and make sure you are getting to deep sleep(your graph looks like you are watching a movie or 3) . My battery graph looks similar to yours when I use my phone constantly.

Sorry I didn't see that you have already downloaded cpu spy. My next thought would maybe it's just your connection. Try looking into flashing newer radios or disabling lte/4g, your area may just not be good for it.

I usually have good LTE coverage but I'll try tomorrow with it disabled. Also if I am using WiFi, will LTE still drain the battery?

Ran CM nightly with Franco's latest kernel and had some improvements but the battery on this thing is nothing compared to my extended Thunderbolt. I guess I was spoiled by that huge battery. How about CM's kernel? Anyoone has an opinion on that?
Having just the screen on will eat the battery at a 10-15% per hour. Using the phone, browsing XDA site, playing a game, using the Facebook app, or basically doing anything else eats the battery at even a higher rate. I don't understand when people say they are a heavy user and have 45% after 10 hours.Ccan't see that happening!!!

Heavy users do not get 10 hours of use with 45 percent left so don't believe people who say that.. At most that is moderate use.

CM 10 Battery Life on GS3

My battery life on CM10 has been terrible. I have barely anything running, i've even installed this custom kernel to combat battery life

Ditch lean kernel. Do you have Chrome installed? It has an undocumented feature. It does unspeakable things to your battery. There seems to be at least a little incompetence going on in Chrome's code.

There's nothing wrong with Lean Kernel. It's running very well for me.

I apologize if I have offended you in some way. But anyone with any experience with troubleshooting will tell you that a problem is easier to pin down when you eliminate all unnecessary variables. And since I've read about and personally experienced anomalies with lean kernel, I suggested it first.

I do have chrome, i guess ill use firefox

I don't have Chrome nor any custom kernel. I agree, cm10 battery life leaves much to be desired, even with juice defender installed. I hope it improves w/future builds. Battery on cm9, on the other hand, was awesome.

Hmm, Im using CM10 nightlies AND lean kernel, and my phone seems to last well beyond my expectations.

No problems for me. I get 4-5 hours of screen time and 16-18 hours overall.

What version of CM10 are you running? I'm giving it sometime, but just flashed CM10 M1 last night, and am wondering if a change from cyanogenmod's kernel may help with battery. Got about 6 hours of lite-moderate use today on my I747

What things are you running in the background (NFC, GPS, vibration, haptic feedback, etc.)? I'm running CM10 9/15 nightly with ktoonsez's kernel with a 1.9Ghz overclock and my phone lasts from 8 in the morning to 1 in the morning. Today my screen's been on for just over 4 hours.
Another thing to check for is are you located somewhere where you consistently get good signal? If your phone is constantly reacquiring 3G or 4G or constantly searching for signal it's going to cause a severe drain on your battery.

I'm using SmartassV2 with SIO. I know I'm old school with SmartassV2, but comeon the name alone is worth whatever marginal performance increase I could get with some of the newer governors.

Well I notice that when I'm on screen, my battery drains like nuts. I slept 8 hours and I went from 100% to 88% which isn't bad at all, however if I'm texting or w/e, checking the web (keep in mind everything is off, I'm not a retard, and my brightness is at maximum low), battery eats like nuts. Is there a kernel or specific rom I should install?

This kernel? It says that if you install it, and you want to go back to stock, you need to reinstall the drivers. Wtf does that even mean? Where the hell would you even find the drivers. Sounds too high risk lol

I am running the latest CM10 build and my battery life is terrible as well. Wednesday night I was about 75% charger before bed and when I woke up, less than 7 hours later, my phone was off with no juice. I tested it again last night with about 85% left and it was dead again this morning. I have the same app installed that I had installed on stock and did not have these issues. I absolutely know and understand this things differ from person to person and settings to settings, but I am not sure my settings are that different from when I was on stock. I fairly enjoy the ROM, so I am just dealing with it.

Well, I've charged my phone to 100 last night, wiped battery stats (still on lean kernel), and i put my phone to sleep, and it drained only 8% which is very good (7 hours of standby). Now where my battery drains like a **** is during on screen time. I've put brightness all the way down to low, but I see people who get 20 hours with 5 hours of screen time. I could only wish to get such battery life lol. I wanna try that k747 kernel but I'm scared about losing my original USB and and **** drivers and I have no idea how I would go about restoring them if I no longer like the kernel lol.

CM10 battery life isn't that great. There was one nightly build that had outstanding battery life, but I can't remember which one it was.

If you both read his OP all you have to do to get the original drivers back is Reflash your ROM that has those drivers. It isn't a huge deal also to the guy going 80%-0 overnight, you have an app eating processes in the back destroying your battery.

I've got to break the well spoken rule about battery life threads.

After long being one of those people who would never post a thread with bias questions or answers.
It's come to this.
I long for the battery I had from ICS, I never got less than 4 hours screen on and 16 hours standby together.
The best I got was right at 5 hours screen on with 18 hours standby.
All with wifi/3G only, very little to none 4G, it's fine with me.

Every single ROM/Kernel combination since I've moved to JB has provided me with just......crap......
AOKP, AOKP kangs, CM, Liquid, CNA, and Eclipse along in different combinations with
Faux, Lean, stock, 007, TinyKernel, and Trinity kernels.
It does not matter what combination I use.
I can barely get over 3 hours-ish screen on time with about 12-18 hours standby.
Now if I use the screen less than 2 hours, I can get up to two days standby, which is nice but not the overall complete usefulness I had.
I know battery has long been an issue for many of us, but I see people in threads talking about their 2 hours of screen on time like it's amazing when it's awful, especially when some of us, could, and used to get close to 5 with stock batteries or 2100 extended (mine)
If you're using LTE all the time, only 2 hours screen on is justified because it should be common knowledge what happens.
Point of the thread is this, I want to know, those on JB with stock or 2100mAh battery and can manage 4+ hours screen on and still close to a day of screen on, what's your secret? Every detail, spill them.
Is it our fault or are we just in a down time of battery efficiency in the ROMs and kernels?

There is no secret, jb is crap when compared to battery usage on ics

Couldn't figure out why my battery life was so poor the for the last month or so. Good to see I'm not the only one with the problem.
AOKP ICS with Franco kernel gave me amazing battery life. Jelly Bean not so much.

I personally believe that anyone getting more screen time than you (this goes for anyone) is:
a) Using their phone in an environment that is less bright than you (indoors, on the bus, in the subway)
b) and / or not syncing as many things as you / not as often as you.
Reverse the above for people getting less screen time than you.
This is the truth of the matter.
Personally, I get 2 to 3 hours to 3.5 hours of screen time on JB, depending on usage.
4 hours if I read in bed at night.
Edit: Kernel / ROM be damned, maybe it'll make 10 to 15 minutes worth of difference. NOBODY has presented scientific proof of any ROM/kernel being different from any other. It's always "oh yaa best battery life ever with this rom". It's just noise and cherry-picked screenshots.

I usually get at least 1 day worth of charge. My set up is pretty easy tho. Since I am in front of a computer 75% of the time , gmail sync is turned off, twitter is @ 4 hours, Facebook set to never with location turned off. Phone gps and location are also turned off unless I M walking towards the bus stop. I don't need to be checking my phone every 5 minutes so my useage is pretty stable and predictable. I wonder what you guys are doing to make the battery die so quick? If your usage patterns are pretty high with checking email 100s of texts and lots of twitter and Facebook well yeah I'll die quick.
Also I seem to get the same results with custom kernels and stock. I have little experience with CPU controls and and such so maybe setting a lower frequency will help?

Battery can be related to many causes leading to user error. I never used ICS on this phone so I honestly have no idea how great the battery was.
Google now, project butter and many other optimizations are to blame yes.
Depends how much you use it and what is going and the vary of networks going on and off and switching. I can normally pull off 3-4 hours of near heavy use. My droid incredible could only get at least 1 hour max. So maybe it is me but the nexus is a godsend for me.
Leaving the governor at interactive with low max and undervolting will help battery and a specific kernel. I can normally roll with 0-10% brightness and have all networks running and syncing.
I'm tired and ready to cook my tacos I'll be back later with more input.

STOP overclocking your phone (even to 1350), under clocking exists you know.
STOP using interactive governors.
STOP using your phone so much.
STOP complaining about it.

Try this...
I have an old Android phone that my boy plays with...so I turn the cell radio off & have it on the wifi signal only. Even with him having the screen on for hours & hours (usually playing games), the phone will stay on battery for almost 4 days!
Turn your cell radio to airplane mode & then turn on wifi only...mess around with it, play games & see what the difference is. When I have a Sprint signal (usually junk 2g one) at home I get poor battery life...when I hack the PRL to choose a 3g (better) signal I get twice the battery life...
I've seen other battery life threads where the signal is a MAJOR factor & even with a strong 2g signal the 3g is probably better at not wasting battery. (4g is a whole other story)

I've found 4 things that almost double my battery life
1) Google Maps: huge battery drainer. freezing it doesn't help either, it has to be uninstalled. Mapquest from the play store is a decent battery friendly alternative. or if you really need gmaps, copy the .apk file and install it when needed, then uninstall afterward.
2) Push Email apps: i.e. Yahoo mail app, Gmail app... use the built-in email app and set the refresh limit to every hour.
3) 3G/2G: when your not using data, put it to 2g networks only. huge battery savings especially if you're somewhere with a weak 3/4g signal.
4) NFC/WIFI/GPS : turn them off if your not using them (obviously)
your results may vary, but doing these things did wonders for my battery. I average 23-26 hours with 2.5-3.5 hrs screen on time. before that I was getting 14-16 hrs with about 1.5-2 hrs screen on

Well, Switching 2g/3g is pretty battery draining, too. So better be sure you don't use 3g networks for a while. constantly switching just to be a minute or two at 2g just drains more
Turning of WiFi is pretty obvious but NFC and GPS shouldn't take any battery juice if they arn't in use... Someone tested it and could proove, that gps only uses battery power if it's searching for a connection.

As you can see, you basically need t neuter your device and constantly worry in order to get 'great' battery life, lol.

Its a small battery, they should up the battery sizes. They can fit the samsung galaxy note 2's battery in the samsung galaxy nexus if they wanted too.. /the end.

yea I only switch to 2g when I know its just gonna be sitting in my pocket for a while, like when I'm at work. in that situation it definaetly helps. but your right switching constantly is bad too. :thumbup: as for NFC and GPS, it just seems to help for me, maybe its just placebo. like I said results may vary

[Q] Battery life?

This is my typical battery life I'm getting is this normal with stock jb Rom? Which of the sense roms have the best battery life? I know best way to find out is to try the different roms but I'm a college student and I really don't have time to check each out. Thanks in advance!

Battery life depends on how u use it and diferent roms have different mods, so the rom best for me may npt be best for u. I have found ordroid rom to give decent enough battery.

yeah I understand that. My question was that is battery life supposed to be like this on the OneX ? Idk what kind of battery life its supposed to be getting. The previous phone i came from was lg g2x which with jellybean custom rom ran out every 3 hrs I always had to take my spares with me to make it through the day. I don't do any heavy gaming on my hox just lite puzzle games. I listen to music, sometimes read an ebook, messaging, check emails, and occationally browsing to look something up.
Is undervolting/throttling the t3 possible?

u have the wifi on at all times
no wonder u are having battery issues
try to turn off wifi when not in use
without wifi and data on, I get 1-2% drop in battery overnight (more than 8 hours)
and on a daily basis, I get 1 and half days of battery - normal browsing, gaming, calling
that is after 2nd jellybean update - which aims to improve battery life and remove a few bugs

using my stock jb hox with the second mini update, since yesterday (1day 5h) and i have 45% battery. using it on wifi half a day on facebook, browsing, listening to music on my way to work and back, sync on for all services, whatsapp, etc, etc.

Try out ncx kernel by neocortex.. it did quite well for my battery life. Also install betterbatterystats app. Sometimes some rowdy app may not allow phone to go to deepsleep. It causes partial wakeblock . The app will allow to check if this is happening. If it is remove that app causing wakeblock

My HOX was a battery life tome on apx. two days (occasionally 2½ days) and I use it like this:
I go to school every weekday for 4-5 hours, which means that the phone is not used that much in this time. Occasional Whatsapp messages and texts and maybe a phonecall lasting a few minues. The wifi is off during this period of time.
After school, I use Facebook, Maps, Google Now, checks mails, chats on Whatsapp and texts on a regular basis. Maybe a few phone calls as well. In the late afternoon / early evening I get home - and Tasker turns on my wifi which lasts until next morning when I leave the house (Tasker automatically turns the wifi off) during the night Titanium Backs up the phone.
I only get apx. one day of battery life, if I start playing all those games you can get... So I more than often don't play games on my phone.

Thanks for all the replys guys... I just experienced some wierd stuff again. I charged it over night and its saying its only 66 % charged... Looking at history it apparentlycharged and started drilaining like this: is this supposed to happen? This was on charge the whole time and it was pretty warm when I picked it up off my bed

How much screen time do you have with the picture you posted in the first post?
I have my wi fi on all the time too but I can easily get 20-24 hrs of battery with 3-3.5 hrs of screen time on stock.

A little less than 12 hrs however I can say my mobile signal is spotty at time cause I have basement classes and same with WiFi going across campus and in lecture halls

Umm I meant how long was your screen lit up. If you have Jelly Bean you need an app like GSAM to check that

its known issue with HOXS battery life sucks on stock rom get custom rom I would rather ARHD great battery life and also greater performance than stock

Hey all,
Just wondering how people are doing on battery life after the update. I moved from BoneStock back to the stock(ish) ROM, and I personally am struggling on battery life right now. It is early though and I'll make adjustments. Just wondering how it's going for everyone else.

May be hard to compare a stock non-rooted phone to a custom ROM even if it stock. Seems like every dev puts in something "for better battery life"
I'm stock, locked, S-On, 4.4 and my battery life is great. Though I'm comparing it to my old phone, Rezound, where I couldn't get out my front door without it dropping 10%
I make it through a full day no problems and I'd consider myself an "average" user.

I haven't noticed a huge difference, but Bonestock 4.3 was definitely better. I'm on NuSense which isn't stock but it's pretty close with a few optimizations. Are you checking in the stats to see if it's an app that's killing your battery? I've had a few occasions when Google location services killed my battery for no apparent reason.

I haven't spent much time yet trying to identify and fix the issues, but I'll start looking at it. I wonder what it is they do to improve the battery life in the custom roms...

I tried the phone back when it was 4.2 and battery was not great, could barely make it till end of work.
Now on 4.4 battery has improved quite a bit. Can easily make it til end of day. Btw I'm s-off stock no root.

My wife's on a totally stock version of the phone, with the latest OTA. I'm on Santod's odexed rooted version of the OTA. 3.11.605.1 in both cases.
We're both seeing a slight decrease in battery life, but nothing too significant.
It's hard to compare battery life because I'm constantly messing with my phone, playing games, changing icon sets, making and deleting widgets etc., while my wife uses hers for phone calls and email and pretty much nothing else. She's never installed an app. I was going to S-off her phone, just to have it done, but our daughter installed the first OTA update before I got around to it. (The 2.10.605.1). She's 9, and enjoys showing my wife how to do stuff on her phone. Stuff that my wife then enjoys forgetting.
Having said that it's hard to compare battery life, I'll do just that. She gets better life than I do, and could likely go 48 hours on a charge. Her biggest power user is the email function - which is the stock email app that came with the phone.
Battery Guru used to tell me I could go 32 hours on a charge, but after flashing Santod's latest ROM I had to uninstall and reinstall it, and so far it's not giving me the same projected life numbers as it used to. I don't mean it's projecting less hours, I mean it's not giving hours of life expectancy at all. I can't remember if it took a few days last time before it started giving the projections - I only flashed the ROM last Friday.
Before the update I would be at somewhere between 70-80% at the end of a day, my wife would be 80+%. Now I'm closer to 60%, she's in the 70's.
My battery life may well improve still with Battery Guru. Would it make sense to re-install it on her phone and let it "learn" all over again?

the 4.4 update is draining too fast.

I went from the 4.2.2 BoneStock ROM to the new 4.4 version and my battery life easily doubled. I can make it about 28 hours on a full charge.

battery in 4.4 is s*ck.

i would prefer 4.3 for the battery life.

I noticed actually better battery life for 4.4 on bonestock. Im running with the elemental kernel and underclocked it, also i have some tweaks in tasker that keep my phone pretty efficient. overall i'm seeing around anywhere from 15 to 20 hours of battery life with depending on how long i have my bluetooth on and other things like that. ill post a screen shot later when i get home of my actual times.

I text a pretty good bit throughout the day and my battery life seems to go pretty quickly:/ I'm completely stock as well no root or anything.....yet. I'm hoping once they get a root/s-off/unlock method out for the 4.4.2/sense5.5 software, that I can do a custom Rom and fix all that.

With pretty heavy use I tend to see between 6 and 9% per hour according to better battery stats. My screen on percentage is probably within 18 to % most of the time. I'm running rooted stock with xposed and a tweak to stock that allows me to select power saver mode in settings.

temporary fix:
-Settings->Data Usage->(dots)->Restrict background data (yes this does make it harder to synchronize content)
-wifi off (if you have more than one bar of signal)
That temporary fix boosted my battery from a days use to two days. I blame Verizon for wakelocking our phone.

BTW my SGN II gets about 5 hours of screen on time and has much bigger battery, so I'm happy with what I get on my One running 4.4.2 with sense 6.0 by hawk and ecliptic team powered by Lunar Ellie oc.

I think this should be the best phone for last year. S4 is overated for me since they have added a lot of stuff that we do not really use. here with my HTC one, it is customized the way we use it. And I can say the best part is that my battery can last for a day if my internet is off. If I'm casually using it with internet, it can run for almost 8 hours.

I had the S4 and sold it. I also have a note 3 and before those I had the note2. Htc is a nice change from TW. It gets me through 11 hr work days +some relax time in it .
