How do I easily delete multiple copies of contacts? For example I have Jane Smith four times.

Go into your contacts app, long press the contact, and press delete...?

Yeah... That's what I went thru and did.
Either that or merge them, but that can complicate.
i had the same problem when i imported my contacts multiple times.
i ended up just reflashing the rom and importing my contacts once.

That's somewhat difficult when you have 50 plus contacts making a total of 200 deletes. I realized I can go to gmail and delete all then just uncheck those I want to keep. Now need to figure out how to delete all on the phone so I can reimport them.

If you have google contact sync set up, they will automatically delete, unless I'm misinterpreting your question

If that doesn't work, you can go to your contacts in google, select all and there's an option to merge duplicates.

Hi all, loving my new Desire!
So, I've sync'd Facebook, Gmail and Flickr with my phone. I thought this was fantastic that it links people in my contacts with their facebook accounts!
BUT, it's made my contacts list stupidly big by adding in every person I've got on facebook, as well as every contact I have on my Gmail account! How do I turn this off? Finding a contact is stupidly hard now.
If I click on People, it only shows the phone contacts I've added, but if I open up a new sms and select to open up my contacts, it shows every name under the sun!
Thanks!
When viewing the complete list of contacts, press the menu button. Then press view, and you can turn on/off the contacts you want to see in your list
Regards
DF
Great the "People" app but doesn't affect "Messages" ...
Yeah, the view thing only affects the People app but your FB contacts will still be searchable via Phone/Messages etc
I just had an idea of a possible workaround by adding all your phone contacts into a group.. then just going into this group when sending a text, etc. but it'll only let you send the text to everyone in the group!
This has to be the most annoying thing about the phone so far. Well, this and the utterly rubbish optical trackball.

Errrm, I'm not sure to be honest. The way it works is if it's 100% sure a contact you have is a person on your facebook, it'll make the link between the two. If it's not 100% sure, it'll suggest the link to you and you have to manually agree to link them.
The trackball is just so innacurate. If for example I need to delete an extra letter in a word and using my finger on the screen gets me close, but not exactly where I want I have to use the trackball.. Which sometimes scrolls along too far or not enough.
Plus if you want to actually use it to do anything, you have to go mad with your thumb!

it just needs some getting used to i guess, ... some people complained about the trackball of the N1 at first, but then they got used to it.
regarding your issue, .. why dont you save your important numbers in the SIM, and then clear all the phone numbers in the phone, and then copy from SIM again
I think if I did this, the next time it sync'd it'd add them all back again!
I could give it a try though

If they are in your t-mobile contacts I think you have to log into your account via a pc and delete them. You can als hide them from your "contacts app" view if you go int contacts' pull up your menu and hit view. Then uncheck anything that you dont want to show up in your contacts.
Not sure if any of that helps, but hopefully it will.

I deleted them from online but I guess they loaded at some point before and now they won't come off even after hitting tmobile sync (and it being stuck on eternal sync). The view thing works but only within the contacts app. From the dialer the numbers still come up and from text messaging app they still come up..so frustrating I have people numbers coming up on the dialer that I don't use or want to see or be seen and I'm stuck with them..ridiculous.
Delete them from faves.

Go to contacts and press Menu. Select view and deselect T-Mobile. Temporary fix till you go online and hopefully sort it out with T-Mo website...
Thats been done too they still come up whenever you type it in the dialer and in the text app.. I deleted them from tmobile server checked on the tmobile to sync and still nothing, they remain. I also deleted all the data from every app that says tmobile on it in the stock app manager. Its just a bug or something, I thought someone would maybe know where there data is located on the phone or something.. Im sure Ill be fine if I wipe but its a bit ridiculous thats what it has to come to.
I had this problem. I had to go into Contacts and choose to view all the contacts I didn't want. Then I deleted all of them by pressing Menu -> Delete and choosing all of them.
Silly question, maybe, but are you sure they're from t-mobile's servers? Could they be on the SIM card?
One thing I found that helped me was to open the contacts list, hit menu > view, to see which contacts are saved where and how they're linked up. I then unlinked all the t-mobile contacts and deleted them manually. Then I turned off t-mobile sync. Finally, I went online and delted all the contacts from t-mobile's crappy servers. They really have a sorry mess of old and new websites crammed together over there and need to do something about their whole system.

**Warning!** This may or may not delete contacts stored on phone I don't know since I have all mine on google account.
Clearing data from the "contacts" application in settings resets this, and it will prompt you on where you want to store the contact.

i figured it out i went in and wiped data from contact sync too and that reset it.
I got a text from my mom but it only showed her number. I checked a few of my other contacts and found that my dad and one of my brothers was also missing. What the hell happened and is there some way to recover these and any others that have gone missing. Those contacts are not new, they've been saved to my Google account since the G1.
Try re-syncing your google account: go to settings -> Users & Accounts -> Click on your google account -> Click on account sync -> toggle contacts back and forth

Seems like you are not the only one having these issues. http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/12/07/contacts-sync-breaking-devices-running-android-oreo/
POTENTIAL FIX: https://productforums.google.com/fo...pHswBNJUQ;context-place=forum/phone-by-google
Go to system settings>apps. Show all then click three dots to show system apps
Then find contacts storage and tap that. Then storage and clear app data.
Then everything will update
remove the URL in the contacts profile if you tied that contact to a google+ account. That's how I was able to get them all synced.

I just logged in to say THAAAAANKS. That was the easiest fix in Android history lol.
Exactly the same, logged in to say thank you
So, I tried this, and the issue isn't resolved. I have to go in to settings and restore contacts more or less every day. Any idea why that might be happening?
When I was logged into Gmail earlier today there was a red banner up at the very top saying there was an issue with contacts. Maybe it's related to that?
This is the steps to transfer contacts from Gmail to cellphone:
Step 1. Unlock your Android phone and enter the "Settings" on the device.
Step 2. Choose "Accounts & Sync" under the "Settings" section and elect the "Add account" option.
Step 3. Tap "Google" from the list and click the "Next" button to go to the next interface.
Step 4. Hit the "Sign in" button if you already have a Google account and then enter your username and password. If not, you need to create a Google account at first.
Step 5. After entering your Google account, you can see there are many file types under the "Sync" setting. Just mark the "Contacts"

Hey, at least his post was more informative than many of the noobs we see. I'll give him an A for effort, and a C+ for realizing what he did
this happened to me when i removed an account from my phone, i just had to reinstate that account on my phone export the contacts from that google account and import them into the other, and then remove that first account again. and set the new account for automatic saving.
Ok then! this will sound like a newby question....I'm not really, I swear!!
So I have my lovely rooted Note 8 all set up the way I like it. It's pretty perfect.
During the data transfer from my old phone to new one using Samsung SmartSwitch, every thing went fine without a hitch.
I can no longer use the SmartSwitch app since my phone is rooted now....not changing that.
Somewhere in the process, my contacts got imported into Gmail app. Which I DO NOT want. I usually removing nearly all of Google's apps along with Verizon's as well as Samsung's...I have a policy of uninstalling what I don't want or need or think much of.
However, my contacts are now associated with the Gmail app - if I remove the app, the contacts disappear!!.
I would like to know what is the most current, up to date and trouble means of backing up my contacts, then deleting the Gmail app, then restoring the contacts? Would a Contacts backup and restore in Titanium Root do the trick? is there another, easier or better method?
Thanks for your assistance!
I haven't used it in a long, long time, but I think Mybackup Pro will save/restore contacts. Could take a look at it and see if that does it for you

Yahoo keeps pushing my XDA notifications to spam for some reason. Hope it works for you
1. open contacts app
2. go to Menu icon (upper-right).
3. go to Manage contacts.
4. go to Import/Export contacts.
5. export to SD
