#1 Being the best
Thanks ALot :-D

Hi everyone..
I too would be interested to hear which are the most popular ROM's
I have a Nokia N900, and it is time to move as I really need a couple of apps that Android have, but Maemo doesn't
So Im upgrading to my first ever Android phone (a desire z) and would like to hear what ROM's are considered good. Im guessing none of them are bad, but it would be interesting to hear which are the most popular. Im not ready to root and install a ROM yet, but I will spend the next few weeks getting to know the phone and read up understand the process and then off I go!
Haven't done this since the bad old days of WM 6.5, so am a bit rusty, though there were a couple of kernel swaps on the N900..
Looking forward to tinkering and learning a new OS, and hopefully getting to grips with the new kitchen as well, as that really looks interesting...
Thx in advance
E

1. CM7 for the obviously ground breaking reasons...
MoDaCo/Paul's Sense ROM
Either of the new MIUIs

Thanks ab0m
Off to google and read now..

Its really up to personal preference and what works for you. You're going to get a lot of CM7 responses now that it is at RC1 and beyond, and very stable.
Go read up on the Wiki in the dev forum, and try them out for yourself. See what you like the most. There are stock roms, Sense-based roms, MIUI, and many others.

CM7 should get the nod for being the best just because of what it is. That being said, I use GingerMex, which is a rom based on CM7 with custom animations, theme and some other tweaks and stuff. Beyond that, if you like Sense roms there are a slew of those as well, but I don't have much experience with those because I don't like the restrictive nature of the Sense launcher.

1. CM7
2. Virtuous (a close 2)
3. GingerMex
4. ModaCo Sense
5. MUIU
CM7 is clearly the fastest, stable, and efficient in terms of battery usage. Virtuous is the best Sense ROM and that team works hard to put out a good product. Not so easy on the battery efficiency, but it is now very stable, and any issues you incur are probably because of advanced kernel use. GingerMex is based on CM7, it just has the custom look to it, that I'm not too fond of (to each their own of course), but it is very stable and fast. MoDaCo is another Sense ROM that is basically stock without any of the bloatware. Kind of plain, to me. MUIU looks like an iPhone, if that's what you're into - I just personally didn't care for the look. I think one of the pluses of that ROM is that it's file size is really small, so it doesn't use up too much internal memory.

Top ROMS!

I recently ROOT my EVO, so I want to know for those who has gone to varios ROMS what are the top 5 ROMS.
Me personally has ben looking for some Desire Z or Desire HD port, only for the Themes but don't know the names of the ROMS here, or or some Gingerbread ROMS but they are a lot of ROMS here, I;m comming from the HeroC...
Calkulin EVi0 2 best room (I just hate that animation color screen at boot) give me up to 12 hours of battery time.
im new too i just rooted my phone sunday i heard from some people that some roms and kernals are made for certain hardware. mines hardware 0004 is it true
thanks.
If you want to fall in love with your EVO all over again, I HIGHLY recommend MIUI. It is hands down the best looking and best performing ROM out there.
4g doesnt work on miui right

Nope, it's AOSP so no 4G or HDMI.
I think you will fall in love with the Azreal rom. I have been running it for over a month now with no issues at all. Good luck finding a rom that you will like.

The best rom for the evo right now is the mikfroyo 4.4 hands down. In terms of speed and customized features it is my favorite of all and mik is already working on
V 4.5 so for u its time to start flashing and enjoying your powerhouse that is the evo the way u suppose to. Happy flashing and have fun!
+1 in the mikfroyi 4.4. Makes me appreciate sense widgets.

Sorry, I meant Konikub's themes.
NEED TO TRY ROMS: DONT GO WITHOUT AT LEAST 3 HOURS ON THESE.
myn's warm twopointtwo: insane themeing. blows your mind and other parts (hehe). fast, stable, just very themed and very feature inclusive.
caulkin's evio 2: incredibly fast. this dude is amazing. you will find his 'usb/wifi tether hack, reboot mod, mms limit/compression mod's in almost every rom out there. slightly themed to not look as fugly as the htc version, very good battery, extreme speed, etc etc etc.
ava-froyo z3: this man is quite a coder. he goes deep inside the rom to alter things never touched by other devs, including radio, 4g, memory management, etc. its a hit and miss for some phones, but gets amazing results on others.
cyanogenmod: vanilla aosp, the biggest project on the xda. built on many different phones, huge team, incredible changes, its like a whole new phone. you wont get the same results or features from any other phone on the market. no hdmi (claims its almost done) and FINALLY 4G (in alpha 2 testing, the code for 4g had to be totally rewritten by two guys. thats probably the biggest feat in this phone's history)
miui: a crossover aosp rom that looks almost like the iphone but with the functionality and customizability of android +100. infinite amount of features. this isnt really built on anything... everything is different. a brand new operating system pretty much. worth a flash. some love it, some (like me) dont.
I am currently using this ROM [ROM(S)]CM7-EX.v9, its pretty neat, still has a few minor issues but it's usable and yeah its Gingerbread. No 4G or HDMI.

Well put. I will +1 you on the CyanogenMod. Great stable ROM with tons of customizability and features out of wazoo.
I would also put in a recomendation foe Fresh Evo ROM by Flipz. Maintains a familiar Sense UI but has some nice performance tweaks and removes all of the bloatware. Also has full HDMI and 4G support. Just another simple and user friendly option for custom ROM that does not get too radical.

I like all the responses here and how members try to help, especially the 8th grade kid, lol.
I for one won't flash a rom where any of the features of the phone won't work, despite the fact of the great work all of those guys are doing to bring gingerbread to us, I applaud all their hard work. Whatever rom u flash, make sure u do a full wipe so u can get a clean install, do a back up or nandroid before u start flashing and read, read, read and keep on reading, that's the most important thing, get acquainted with any issues or problems that may arise with the roms u gonna flash so u don't panick and go all monkey if the phone freezes or whatever the situation may be. Finally be ready for the storm, flashing is an addiction hard to control.
My top five (which may not be your top five)
MIUI
Evoneo
vaelpak
burnt droid
Evio2
If I'm on a Sense rom, I use go launcher

I know this has already been said but I just have to agree with Cyanogen. The stable build (6.1.2?) is incredibly nice with plenty to do. On the other hand, Cyanogen7 (i.e. nightlies) are a bit more finnicky (still a superb work in progress). I used the stable build until I had enough courage (newbie myself to android) to start trying the night builds. I really dont want to go back to anything else now, not even the stable. Getting excellent battery life (intermittent tho), great look, very customizable. Def worth a try, if anything
Depends on what you want our of your rom. I tried many, but heres my personal experience.
I went with miui for awhile. Loved the speed and uniqueness. In the end missed everything working perfect.
Went to azrael for awhile. Fastest sense rom in my opinion. Highly recommend if you like sense.
Since I don't like sense, but want stuff to be fully functional, I'm currently on vaelpak. Very fast, great on battery, and the vaelpak settings app makes it very easy to tune to your liking.

[Q] What is the best daily driver ROM as of 2/12/11?

Okay, so I know there have been similar threads out there, but none of them have been very recent. The Incredible Rom world has been getting a lot of dev support lately with roms being ported from other devices and people simply getting bored and coming over to the incredible.
I'm not new to hacking, flashing ROM's, kernels and etc--though this is my first post here, I've been lurking around for a couple of months now. I've tried Virtuous, Redemption, MIUI, Warm, CyanogenMod and several different kernels. I've found MIUI to be the most polished with the most features and support, Warm was the fastest when I used lou's kernel #8, Redemption came in 2nd with speed, and CyanogenMod was okay--but I probably wont go back. MIUI is my current daily driver, but I will soon be checking out Incredibly Re-Egineered and Liquid Metal--both of which I've heard were excellent daily drivers.
There is no way the average ROM user can really go through every ROM and find the best--but they don't have. With our large community, at least one of us has tried each ROM. So tell me, what ROM's have you used? Which ROM is currently your favorite daily driver and why?
Well if you prefer aosp then CM 6.1 stable (or the CM7 Nightlies which are stable and amazing.) Or CVPS Ruby 2.0.2 which is an excellent source build. If you prefer Sense the I would recommend Redemptionrom 2.3 (2.4 is on the horizon )or SkyRaider both are stable and well supported by their developers and the community. All the above have a good amount of options from kernels to mods/themes. I personally use CM, I have since the G1 oh so very long ago lol. So if you havent given GB CM7 a spin you should check it out with the new 2.6.37 kernel by slayher. I saw you like MIUI...though there's active support Im just not a fan of the apple esque ui...just preference i guess. Hope that helps.
Cheers

The question is whether you want a Sense ROM or AOSP ROM. I prefer Sense ROMs and am currently running Uber Z ROM, which is a port of the new Sense UI. However if you want an AOSP ROM that is still true to Android I would go with CM, but MIUI is a different beast entirely. It's all about personal preference though.
As far as kernels go I also prefer Lou's, but I have had solid performance with #9. However kernels are more specific to the hardware of your phone so just go with what works best for you.
Ive been using incredibly re engineered for a bit aswell as senseless revolution and i love both of them. Theyre great daily drivers and very fast

Try out OMFGB. I've been on it since mid-january.

There are many choices. I look for the dev support and the community using it. If the thread if full of jerk comments, I pass. That being said...
Redemption, Redemptive, Inc-Re-engineered and Magnolia have great support and are customizable. I have had little to no issues with any of these.
There are some great Z-Roms out there as well. I was having issues with the exchange mail interface that was a deal breaker for me. I could not access the Corporate email list with it.
Tried out some new roms.
Great information guys. I personally prefer Sense, however don't mind AOSP roms much either. If it's feature rich, has good dev support, and not overly difficult to use--I can go either way (I just believe sense has a better backbone to work off.)
I think I'm going to try OMFGB and the Uber Z Rom next. I actually went ahead and tried Liquid Metal and Incredibly Re-engineered on today. Liquid Metal was very unique, and though it had some excellent features, it was a little too unique and complicated to navigate around--I just found the UI quite strange.
However, Incredibly Re-engineered I feel is just excellent. It's a lot like Warm 2.2, which I liked quite a bit, and I found it to have much fewer bugs--if any. It may be my new favorite (I personally didn't like the MIUI IPhone feel myself).
Please keep them coming guys.
I think ive tried ever rom. I love cm7 and with weather toggle widgets it looks like sense. Support is awesome! I enjoy the z roms although they dont enjoy me. The mytouch 4g rom was the fastest ive ever seen, but its got a few issues. Just remember, all roms have their own little quirks, its all about what you can live with. Personally for me and what i use, cm7 is the most stable rom ive ever used. All the roms are great, i take my hat off to the devs, i wish i had their talent.

I find myself always coming back to SkyRaider Sense 3.5 with HeyItsLou's #7 kernel... a very stable combo on my phone. I have run pretty much all of the roms on the first 2 pages of the Dev thread and have much love and thanks to all of the developers for taking time to let the rest of us enjoy the fruits of their labors

I've tried a few ROMs and kernels and I've always gravitated back to Hey It's Lou Redemptive Revolution latest ROM and #9 kernel.

Currently, I use CM6 for the DInc. Until an official stable release of CM7 comes out I'll probably stick with this (mainly b/c I'm lazy). It has a very nice feature set and it seems to be okay on my battery, I can last through the day and it is fine. I used to run a ROM with one of the kernels that focused on battery life. While I got amazing battery life (relatively speaking, as far as that goes for the DInc) sometimes the phone would seem sluggish. So while CM6 isn't the fastest, I think it's a nice compromise.
-shrugs- my two cents
Other than triple Facebook Birthday events in my calendar, Virtuous 3.2.0 still does the trick here.
SenseUI. Virtually completely stock, with all of the normal Root Access goodies, and 100% stable.
Cyanogenmod 6.1 worked great for me. I also had no problem with the nightly (#35). Both using stock cyanogenmod kernels. Ultimate Droid 3.0 just came out and it seems to work great as well.
I personally have been using Embrace Miui (a slightly stripped down , much more polished version than original build) with invisiblek #28 kernel and have had no problems and great battery life.
So basically my suggestion would be embrace (if you like miui), Cyanogenmod 6.1 (if you want froyo) or UD 3.0 (if you want gingerbread). If you want an aftermarket kernel, I suggest invisiblek (for froyo builds).
+1 for HeyItsLou's Redemtive rEVOlution rom, Skyraider is great too, althought i haven't had one on since 2.5. Every Gingerbread rom I've tried has gps issues with my phone. Until I can find a good Gingy rom, rEVO rom is what I'm stickin with.
Athena 1.2 and Myn. Great roms.
Incredibly Re-engineered
I have tried most of the roms on xda and just flashed Incredibly Re-Engineered for the first time when the newest version (2.3) came out about a week ago. I have been running it for the entire week now with not a single problem whatsoever. It is lightning fast and has a stock feel to the UI which is what I like. Also, the developer seems great and appears to help literally in anyway he can to fulfill peoples requests for custom made features. I will be sticking with this rom probably as my permanent, of course besides taking new ones for test drives as they come out. Just my 2 cents...
Athena... STABLE, snappy, long battery life, nice customization options and sense(less).
Been waiting for a ROM like this since I got my Dinc.

Best Aosp GB ?

Hey fellows
Well, just post your opinion on the subject matter and/or experience with hens said (which is the best).
I just want to know the communities thoughts on this. (as well as possibly flashing one myself, cuz i've i am sick on flashing a new version of these Sense rom's)
Redux, its speed is incredible.
Tbh a rom depends on your needs and your own personal tastes. I have flashed so many aosp roms and have settled on miui. It has what I need and its fast. Just keep trying ruins till you like one.
Its taken me months, about 6 ish to stop flashing.
Swyped...
Oxygen works best for me. Fairly straightforward with only a few mods. Almost hack free.
Pretty much plain 2.3.4 but with extended power controls, pull-down notification and an updater.
I have it running with Launcherpro and its very smooth and very good battery life.

[Q] Next ROM to flash? Leedroid Froyo to what?

Hey everyone, I'm at a crossroads in terms of what ROM I want to flash next. I've had Leedroid's Froyo ROM for well over 9 months and I've been very satisfied with it. Now that the final version has been released for a little while, I've been itching to try some Gingerbread roms, but I have no idea which to choose.
My main concern is stability and battery life. Does a Sense ROM really tax the battery life moreso than an Oxygen or CM7 type of rom? I do like some of the Sense feature (like the dialer). Do Sense 2.1/3.0 roms (ie Insertcoin) eat up even more battery life?
Another concern of mine is flashing a new hboot for S-OFF. Seems like many new roms require this. I'm guessing that the risks are fairly low of anything going horribly wrong, right?
So with all that in mind, I was thinking between these 4:
-Leedroid Gingerbread V3.0.X
-CM7
-Oxygen
-Insertcoin
Just looking for some general opinions and recommendations on any of these ROMs. Thanks!
Hi, ive flashed all 4 of those ROMs at one time or another so ill try to give a overview of what I think.
I stuck with CM7 for quite a while, and really liked it. if you want a ROM with fairly good battery life, and lots of customization options, then go wth that. Oxygen seems to me like it is a lot like CM7 but there a much less options to customize and change.
I didnt have leedroid for that long but after looking over the page again, it seems like a slightly cut down version of InsertCoin. InsertCoin has certain sense 3.0 features in it, where as leedroid doesnt (I think). I personally stick wth InsertCoin, as it has an easy A2SD system, and the WiFi range seems vastly better on it than any other ROM ive tried!
So, in conclusion
CM7 - Nice, stable, fast gingerbread with lots of customisation options.
Oxygen - Slightly cut down version, fast, with less customization.
LeeDroid - Fast, Stable, Clean, Sense/Gingerbread.
InsertCoin - Slightly more bulky, but really nice looking sense/gingerbread mix, with Sense 2.0/3.0/2.1 features
Just my opinion, hope it helps
If Sense and battery are the two main concerns, then try Leedroid GB. Obviously, Insertcoin and all these Sense 3 stuff are eating more battery than Sense 2.1. I used it for a month or two, it's not that bad.
If you can drop Sense, then of course Oxygen or CM7. Or, you can try Redux as well, it is very similar to Oxygen (see my signature).
But the best way is to find out yourself: flash IC, use it for a week and you will see.
Cheers!

Thanks for the very helpful reply! I was leaning on Insertcoin, just to see what all the fuss was about with Sense 2.1/3.0 was all about. Leedroid currently uses Sense 1.0 in his Gingerbread rom in case you were wondering.
I have zero plans this weekend, which means I have all the time in the world to try out some ROMs
I'm running CM7.. its a fast and stable ROM with good customization options and no s-off required plus I'm getting much better battery life than I was with my stock 2.2 froyo ROM

[Q] What rom for a friend?

I want to fix my friend's phone up since he's still rocking Froyo. I have a Captivate and am not a noob. The problem is, he lives 18 hours away and he's here only for the weekend. He's not very tech savvy at all so I need to know a solid stable Gingerbread rom that won't give him any problems.
There's so much to read and I'm not that familiar with htc phones and I have a limited amount of time to read up. I can flash just fine, just need a good rom suggestion. Thanks guys!

Stock+ by Jermaine151 is the best, most stable, most appropriate for this phone.
If he prefers AOSP to Sense, then CM 7.1 is probably the best and most stable.
There is a lot of interesting Sense 2+ and kernel development, but I wouldn't go there if you need stability.
I saw Stock + and it looked good. He knows nothing about any of this stuff but I just hate seeing people using slow buggy stock crap. I know any custom rom would be better. Just need to make sure I give him something that won't give him any problems.
Sent from my Captivate with CM7.
I'm brand new to Root and tried nil's biz 3.0, CM7, Stock+, etc. and I'm loving McTwist v1.1. Super stable, fast, Sense 2.1 with some 3.0.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275008&page=1
Stock+ or cm7. I cant recommended 2.0-2.1 or 3.0-3.5 roms. They are too slow and cause too many problems.
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
Bugless Beast. It's stock, but it's the best ROM I've ever used on this device.
If he's used to sense, I don't think there's a better option than stock+.
