I'm 25, a business guy (though I use my phone for personal use only) and have been looking over the forums for the best way to get the most use out of my phone. Right now I've just got the stock rom with only a couple of cabs installed. I've got my e-mail set up on it (though I have some issues with the send/receive not occurring when it's supposed to) and installed a few games. What I really want to be able to do with my phone is web surfing. There's some website I like to frequent.. a lot.. but it seems with the stock settings the internet is pretty slow. I do a lot of texting and e-mail replies as well. A few free games here and there would be nice too. I'm in a pretty stable 3G area, don't have any bluetooth devices hooked up nor do I use the wi-fi (haven't found a reason to use this really yet)
Looking through the forums I've gotten somewhat overloaded as to what I should get for my phone in terms of performance enhancements. Any suggestions to help with the above would be great.
note: I've never messed with my phone's registry or have flashed a rom, but would be willing to do so if the information could be provided.

E-mails:

Internet:
TP2 has a feature called push internet, basically you can set websites to be automatically updated so the next load will be much faster. Browse to the internet tab in sense and set up the websites you frequent most often. I've heard it wastes battery life so I do not use it.
In terms of internet speed, I actually think we aren't full 3g on TP2 network. Here are the specs of the TP2 and a phone with full 3g. As you can see under data the tp2 is not the fastest available device:

Flashing rom/registry
Based on the overview you have given I would say registry tweaks and flashing a custom ROM isn't needed, although I love Mighty Mikes 6.5 much better than VZWs.

Thanks for those links. I installed Seven and love the push feature that it gives for my e-mail. It works like a charm, however there's an issue I'm running into. It seems that in order for Seven to work it needs to stay running constantly, and it won't let me close it. I'm also now having issues closing any other app that I run by holding down the "X". Between these two issues, and my phone not going into sleep mode as much as it should be my battery is already down to 30% (and it's not even 5pm yet =/)

I've heard push internet can really tax on the phones battery life, not sure if you are using that feature though.
Seven works perfectly fine for me having it running all day...I went a full 24 hours and was at 30%, I have 4 e-mail accounts synced through Seven.
Do you know what your phone RAM idles at? Try downloading and installing SSK TP2 Dynamic Resource proxy, it may help out with some of your problems.
I'm not sure what the closing issue is...could just be that your phone is using too much RAM, which the SSK cab should fix.
SPB mobile shell 3.5 is the best program for nonROM Cookers. Here is the link. Download the trial and PM me.
I use it the backup and various other things I found on here.
The SMS notification is a major annoyance so download the cab to disable it.
After you use your phone for a while- trust me, XDA will become a favorite to find tweaks to make your phone seem new again.
Demonic, based on the fact that you like to use the internet a lot I would highly recommend moving to a cooked rom when you feel comfortable. At&t doesn't open up the phones true potential with their "stock" rom. It's locked to 3G and a cooked rom will activate HSDPA which will double or triple 3G speeds. I can sustain download speeds over 2000kbps. Also the whole phone will be much more responsive.
There's a bit of reading needed and a learning curve but I'm sure you can handle it. I'd never even knew what flashing was in the fall of 08' and a year later I had flash my Fuze at least a 500 times. I've had the Tilt2 since Nov and it's been flashed over 50 times already

Its a great product with many intuitive features...for me it required a restart everyday though....which wasn't acceptable.
So now I'm having some issues with Seven... I have a good 3G signal, have restarted the phone multiple times, but it will only stay connect for a short time. When I go into the Seven settings I'm seeing a yellow broken symbol for the connection. I have to manually refresh all the data for the e-mail account in order for it to update. Some times it works great, others.. not so much.

I had the spb mobile shell on my old phone (Epix) and loved it. But I don't think I could spend the money to put the newer version on my Tilt2. =/

No, most ROMs will be fairly similar, with minor visual changes, some feature changes, and different programs installed by default (usually the chefs favorite programs)

With Seven, make sure you don't have quite time on. In seven, hit the Menu soft key (bottom right) and click general settings. Then click the quiet time option and set the hours you do not wish to receive messages.
I think if you paid for the old version of Mobile Shell you can get the new version as well, try e-mailing one of the devs over there to help you out.

I have all of the quiet times turned off except for when roaming or low battery. When I unplugged my phone from the charger this morning it updated my e-mails like it normally does. I checked my phone again around 9:30 and the Seven settings said that it was last connected at 8:30 this morning and showed the "not connected" symbol. I had to manually refresh all data in order for it to re-connect.
If your mailserver supports IMAP I would try Schedhandler made by Camro on these forums it does IMAP IDLE great and doesn't hardly use any battery.
So I noticed Seven losing the connection again today. I then went to my connection settings and attempted to disable Data Connection. When I attempt to do this it automatically connects again. When I then go back to Seven it shows that it's trying to re-establish a connection and MAY connect.
Does anyone know why my e-mail will sometimes stay connected and then drop off irregularly?

I've tried many different settings (POP3 and IMAP4) using the basic MMS functions with windows 6.5 but have had issues receiving e-mails on a regular update basis. I had the same isssue with 6.1. Some times e-mails will work properly, other times I have to reboot my phone, or pray for my e-mails to receive. Even after doing a Send/Receive I still won't get e-mails on my phone at times.
I'm using sbcglobal for my e-mail, but if this keeps up I'm thinking of switching back to hotmail or gmail =/

Actually, I'm really surprised no one's been able to do a registry hack in terms of the HSDPA function.
And yeah, I agree...there's some really good chef's with cooked ROMs that blow the Death Star's crap and crippleware laden ROM to "Hades in a Longaberger". Unfortunately I've not had my phone 30 days yet, so I'm a little hesitant to flash yet. (even though I flashed my Kaiser/Tilt quite regularly once it was out of warranty)
As soon as the 30 days expire though...you bet it's gonna get flashed.

Go to your browser and type "about:config".
Find your connections and up them, the stock is like 4 connections and 6 max. I changed them both to 128 and change the page update delay to 0.

See if another email provider has this problem. I currently am connecting to the following and have experienced no errors since install:
Exchange Server
Y! Mail
gmail
POP3
Seems to be sbc related as both seven and your normal mail have issues connecting.
Sorry for the late response. SchedHandler seems to handle misconfigured or poorly configured IMAP servers very well you might want to give it a shot on your SBC account. And the author of the program is very active and makes changes sometimes daily.

Just checking my data balance with my operator.. and its showing i am using on average 12 megs per day... seems a little high as i'm on wi-fi at home..
does synching with yahoo mail eat a lot of data? i sync news reader subs on the wifi ini the morning.. and only use browsing a little on the phone.. nothing major..
does google maps use a lot of data?
Just seem a little high.. my current data plan offer 250 megs a month.. so might be a little low!

Ive noticed this as well. I think it has something to do with google maps. According to my data usage program I have uploaded 15mb and downloaded 5mb today. What on earth is doing all the uploading and why?
i assume this is because of the my location service
if you have this enabled you agree that the service can withdraw these details at any time during the day.
try disabling the my location service from the settings menu and try again.
especially if you have gps disabled in which case it will find your location based on your GSM which will use your phone's connection?
again it's just a theory but this definitely applied to my hD2
Its a shame nobody has written an app to show data usage per application. I`ve searched and found nothing
when you say "a little bit of browsing". it won't take many pages to add up to 12mb these days. on graphics heavy, or just badly made websites this could easily be as few as 10 pages!

Google maps only stores a limited amount of the map to it's cache and all the rest it pulls from your data bundle to update what you see on your screen. There are a few apps available with the maps downloadable to your SD card. These apps will remove the need for maps to cache if you use it.
I'm having a problem with something using data on my phone. I have the data counter widget and if I havent used wifi or 3g all day then turn one of them on it shows me as downloaded around 20kb. I disabled auto update on the weather and the set the download frequency in the mail app to manual. Can't think of anything else. Anyone got other suggestions?
Bet you've got Latitude enabled.
Whats latitude and how do you disable it?
The part of Maps that tells you where your buddies are and your buddies where you are.
If you don't know what it is, it's probably not enabled.
Open Maps, press menu and tap Latitude, menu again then privacy settings. You disable it there.

Try 'Spare Parts'. Whilst its doesn't exactly show this you can see Network usage under the battery section. It's by application but am not sure if its really network usage or just battery usage by network functions.
I would also be interested in such application. On my WinMo device I used SPB wireless monitor, which did the job very well.
I am using around 1MB of data per day (gmail-only emails-sync, weather sync 3 hours), but even if I disable everything, there are still some data transfers. This could be a problem when abroad...

My frequencies in terms of auto updates for Facebook etc are the same as on my previous hd2 but it didn't chew up anywhere like this amount.
Any ideas? Is it really Google location?
I can't believe that there hasn't been more talk about this. I have a corporate limit of 500mb per month.

same here.. i switched tariffs yesterday to get a 1gb monthly limit..
you can turn off internet connection via mobile networks.. might be worth trying to save data.. also i'm using the opera web browser as it uses a lot less data.. also turn off background sync altogether.. wont stop your emails etc....

If the phone goes into standby, by default it turns off WiFi and switches to cellular data. It's in the setup Wireless menus, there's options on when to do this, including never which means all network connectivity will cease when the phone is in standby, so no push email etc.
no, never means that the wifi never turns off and it will continue to use wifi when in standby.
however, if you have it set to 15 minutes, then yes the wifi will turn off and go back to cellular data.

I'd install 3gwatchdog (which monitors your data usage, excluding wifi), and then start quitting apps, making whatever changes you want to try and see what's causing it.

Ok today I have no Wi-fi and up to 1600 I have used over 30mb.
These are the apps I believe are drawing data down (28mb is data in).
BBC headlines widget, set to 2hrs
Guardian app, only downloads on Wi-fi
Facebook 2 hrs
Twitter 2 hrs
Google location - allow wireless location
Email for both corporate and hotmail accounts.
I can't think of anything else. This is all consistent with my hd2 but it was using far less. I can't believe there isn't an app that can slice it by app.

By default, data when roaming is disabled so this should not be an issue unless you are like me where I am roaming from the second I walk out of the office door so need to have this enabled. I must remember to turn this off when I get on a plane
Hi. I am really interested in getting the TP2 and I've been using the search function to try to find out whether the TP2 can work with third party applications through wifi only, but I can't find an answer. This is important because I can't afford a data plan and want to be able to reference things on my phone while at work. The programs are epocrates, qxmd, and the like. I've read that 3rd party apps only work through data on blackberries (even though they have wifi antennas) and was wondering if the same applies to any of the HTC phones (mainly the touch pro2)? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Whether an app can support Wifi is not really a function of the phone. I have yet to find one that didn't on either my Tilt 2 or the Incite it replaced. The app itself doesn't usually care which connection it uses so long as one is present. The real trick is to not use ANY data at all. Almost any WinMo phone will access the network for something, usually for something like aGPS or to download weather info. These will be relatively small amounts of data, but it takes some effort to set your phone up to not use ANY data. I use a couple of tracking and GPS programs that would not be possible without a data plan. Having one of these smartphones and not letting it use data seems a waste to me. Wifi is only so accessible.

Thanks for your answer. I really don't want a smartphone, but it might be required and I just want a way to access it without paying extra money.
Reading stories like this makes me glad mine is off.

glad i have a 1.5GB plan. though i never see it chew up much. but aye, it's a good course to make MS do another update if they don't fix it with the feb patch.
I have a suspicion that this is just another thing the press have jumped on to attack Microsoft. I don't think it is a large scale issue or we would have heard about it before now in these forums.
well to be honest it has been noted around here in a few threads before, and most of us believe it comes from the feedback system in the phone. i think just having it so that it only sends data when connected to wifi will automatically resolve it.
but aye, wait for MS to do their investigations. i'm sure if they just "bing" it, they'll find our posts and say that is their solution as well

A lot of people report high battery consumption with WP7 devices. This could be the reason.

MS has acknowledged the fact and looking into the resolution, so I don't think it is some mumbo-jumbo.

This is a workaround and not a solution, I am pretty sure they want to solve it rather than telling the users to disable the feature.

yea i agree. but i'm just saying that MS could propose it as a temporary work around if it is indeed the cause of the issue, until they fix it in an update.
I have a suspicion this is a 3rd party app issue, as it's not everyone who's having this problem... Could still be the OS, of course.

Uncertain about everyone having the issue. In all likelihood it could well be a majority. How would anyone know how much data they were using unless they studied the statement or had a monitor installed? Most people might not be aware of it at all and unconcerned.

Most people have limited cap on 3G data, so it's not that difficult to realize whether your phone is abusing your monthly plan or not.
Actually, from the comments at engadget and other blogs, it does seem that the vast majority of users are not affected by the issue. And I've never heard a single one in Italy affected as well. So it maybe a carrier-specific problem, or a 3rd party app available on certain markets/networks.
Or there might not be an issue at all, the high data consumption being just caused by applications running under the lockscreen in standby (so that wifi goes off and 3g kicks in).

True... I know I'm ok because I have checked my online statement thing and I've only used a couple of MB so far this month.

You all know that via windowslive we can locate our phones, erase them, block them ect.
Well this function is on by default.
I guess to find out where it is, (its regularly saving its current location on windows live) It has to send some kind of info to Microsoft.
Now i dont think to save location info would need Mbs of data, but who knows?

That depends how often it's sending location info, and whether it's using AGPS. I don't know the details... Mine is turned off anyway.

Location is switched on on my phone and I haven't noticed any large data usage.
I am not getting extra data usage when I'm not using my phone it's only about 5k every now and then when it checks email but Saturday I was at the NEC and used IE a lot and wow it ate data!!! I used nearly 30mb just on general surfing, my old Blackberry Storm 2 on the same type of use would have been about 5mb!!!! so why is the phone using so much data when I was just surfing?

Do you have it on mobile viewing, or desktop viewing? Remember that other phones searched from Google used to limit the viewing for mobile devices. Google would reformat them. Bing doesn't do that, especially if you have it browse as if you're using a desktop.
I have location services on all the time, as well as 3G. The phone uses probably 5MB/day along with my emails, and some MSN. Location services is not the problem, and I lock and find my phone everyday to make sure it's working Yes, I'm over protective.
It's a 3rd party app or feedback.
I've had all location services and features turned on except Feedback since October and have barely been using 50MB a month, which includes downloading games and Apps from Marketplace.
Could be the feedback feature i suppose, i've recently turned mine on but disabled the option to send via GPRS so it won't make a difference i guess.
I've had all location services and features turned on except Feedback since October and have barely been using 50MB a month, which includes downloading a couple of games and Apps from Marketplace.

I have location services on all the time, as well as 3G. The phone uses probably 5MB/day along with my emails, and some MSN. Location services is not the problem, and I lock and find my phone everyday to make sure it's working Yes, I'm over protective.

Wonder if you guy's can help. Just got a sim free defy and have noticed it seems very data hungry from the off.
Installed a data app and its saying im using 5 mb + a day.
What is it doing, to use all this data all i seem to have done is put my location in the weather app thats built in, logged on to my face book and thats about it. oh and set up my o2 email account.
Cant seem to find how to limit the size of email download in the accounts.
How can i monitor each individual program and find out which ones causing the problem.

you could try setting up something on 'data manager'
Whats everybody else's usage average out each day only asking cause its my works phone sim and don;t want to get stung for data usage.
Today it's 2,76MB, though I've used 1,39GB over the last month.
I have 3GB included in my contract. couldn't care less about traffic ...
but if you want absolute control install droidwall and see what connects to the internet.

An Android phone was a mistake if you're looking to avoid heavy data usage.
my average is about 30 mb on weekends (out of wifi range) and like 2 mb on weekdays as I'm on school holidays and moslty always in wifi range

Cheers for the droidwall tip, seems a good way of restricting a lot of things
I also observe that Android sometimes produces traffic without an order to do so. 3gwatchdog counts the traffic and shows the origin-applications, some are just google or motoblur stuff but without any option to deactivate traffic or updates or whatever they're doing.....

Of course, the OS is designed to be used with an always-on data connection.
If you don't have one of those, an Android phone is not a good idea.
I do have unlimited traffic, but a speed limitation after 200 MB to 64kbit/s which isnt fun anymore.
Thats the problem of the big ans usually good providers in Germany, even the highly priced agreements have that little traffic included.
Thus, I think it should be possible to deactivate useless data traffic even in Android, mh? There should be some options that deny traffic usage in general and also for single apps. (btw. I tried droidwall, but some apps tunneld the firewall and produces traffic anyway!)

There are ways to completely disable data usage but I'm, not sure it's possible for individual apps.
But, like I said, if heavy data usage is a concern, Android is not the right OS for you.
Ignore Step666 his talking crap, android is a good OS even if ur not connected all the time, (I dont even use 3g connection, I mostly use only wi-fi) ..not everyone hangs on facebook all day or needs those weather widgets and stuff like that... really depends on a user.
but if u have a problem with heavy data usage i can help
-first a program that will help u monitor your usage (u can also reset counters monthly) - try traffic counter extended, there are also other apps that help u limit how much data u can transfer over wifi/cell
-second i think droidwall is the app u are looking for
(its a firewall for Android. This is for users that don't have an unlimited data plan. It allows unrestricted WiFi access, however it blocks all access over the cellular network unless you add the application to the whitelist.)
Also, try disabling auto sync on the power control widget.

No I'm not.
The fact you're having to install third-party apps to prevent the phone from automatically connecting to the internet merely proves my point - it is designed to be used with an always-on internet connection.
there was a third party app called DROIDWALL...it allows you to block all the unwanted apps from connecting with internet.. and yes it allows only specific apps to be blocked..
yeah use droidwall, its easy - set it to "white list (allow selected)" then select the google system apps and the apps you like to have internet access, any new apps you install wont get net access unless you add it to the white list, making it easy to manage.
you can also restrict wifi and/or 3G per app.
nice for apps like notepad that somehow need internet access.

I did already use Droidwal for some time, but it did not function properly.
I blocked certain apps and for some time I blocked all apps, includig system apps. And what happened? There was data usage by any program, at least the traffic counter showed traffic usage. Thus, it seems not to block really what I set to block. :-/

I had to apply the rules manually... Did you try?
What do you mean by "manually"? You can manually set apps to white- and blacklist, yeah, or what u mean?
