I'm 25, a business guy (though I use my phone for personal use only) and have been looking over the forums for the best way to get the most use out of my phone. Right now I've just got the stock rom with only a couple of cabs installed. I've got my e-mail set up on it (though I have some issues with the send/receive not occurring when it's supposed to) and installed a few games. What I really want to be able to do with my phone is web surfing. There's some website I like to frequent.. a lot.. but it seems with the stock settings the internet is pretty slow. I do a lot of texting and e-mail replies as well. A few free games here and there would be nice too. I'm in a pretty stable 3G area, don't have any bluetooth devices hooked up nor do I use the wi-fi (haven't found a reason to use this really yet)
Looking through the forums I've gotten somewhat overloaded as to what I should get for my phone in terms of performance enhancements. Any suggestions to help with the above would be great.
note: I've never messed with my phone's registry or have flashed a rom, but would be willing to do so if the information could be provided.
Thanks in advance!
Hi Demonic, welcome.
I'll break it down based on what you need and where you can find it.
E-mails:
I really really really like seven beta for e-mails. I've posted the CAB here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=634213
Internet:
TP2 has a feature called push internet, basically you can set websites to be automatically updated so the next load will be much faster. Browse to the internet tab in sense and set up the websites you frequent most often. I've heard it wastes battery life so I do not use it.
In terms of internet speed, I actually think we aren't full 3g on TP2 network. Here are the specs of the TP2 and a phone with full 3g. As you can see under data the tp2 is not the fastest available device:
http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/HTC-Touch-Pro2-CDMA-phone-p_3710.html
http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Palm-Pixi-Plus-phone-p_4308.html
its the same for all carriers btw.
Flashing rom/registry
Based on the overview you have given I would say registry tweaks and flashing a custom ROM isn't needed, although I love Mighty Mikes 6.5 much better than VZWs.
If you have more detailed questions feel free to PM me.
Thanks for the quick reply! I'm downloading seven now and will give that a shot!
forgot to give you all my fun links....check these out for games etc:

Thanks for those links. I installed Seven and love the push feature that it gives for my e-mail. It works like a charm, however there's an issue I'm running into. It seems that in order for Seven to work it needs to stay running constantly, and it won't let me close it. I'm also now having issues closing any other app that I run by holding down the "X". Between these two issues, and my phone not going into sleep mode as much as it should be my battery is already down to 30% (and it's not even 5pm yet =/)

I've heard push internet can really tax on the phones battery life, not sure if you are using that feature though.
Seven works perfectly fine for me having it running all day...I went a full 24 hours and was at 30%, I have 4 e-mail accounts synced through Seven.
Do you know what your phone RAM idles at? Try downloading and installing SSK TP2 Dynamic Resource proxy, it may help out with some of your problems.
I'm not sure what the closing issue is...could just be that your phone is using too much RAM, which the SSK cab should fix.
SPB mobile shell 3.5 is the best program for nonROM Cookers. Here is the link. Download the trial and PM me.
I use it the backup and various other things I found on here.
The SMS notification is a major annoyance so download the cab to disable it.
After you use your phone for a while- trust me, XDA will become a favorite to find tweaks to make your phone seem new again.
Demonic, based on the fact that you like to use the internet a lot I would highly recommend moving to a cooked rom when you feel comfortable. At&t doesn't open up the phones true potential with their "stock" rom. It's locked to 3G and a cooked rom will activate HSDPA which will double or triple 3G speeds. I can sustain download speeds over 2000kbps. Also the whole phone will be much more responsive.
There's a bit of reading needed and a learning curve but I'm sure you can handle it. I'd never even knew what flashing was in the fall of 08' and a year later I had flash my Fuze at least a 500 times. I've had the Tilt2 since Nov and it's been flashed over 50 times already
Here's a link to get started.
Flashing your First GSM Rhodium Rom (For Noobs)
After reading that if you have any questions ask them here and if it's not me here 1st I'm sure you'll still find all the help you need. There's a lot on talented people here on xda.
BTW, SPB Mobile Shell:
http://www.spb.com/products/mobileshell/
Its a great product with many intuitive features...for me it required a restart everyday though....which wasn't acceptable.
So now I'm having some issues with Seven... I have a good 3G signal, have restarted the phone multiple times, but it will only stay connect for a short time. When I go into the Seven settings I'm seeing a yellow broken symbol for the connection. I have to manually refresh all the data for the e-mail account in order for it to update. Some times it works great, others.. not so much.

I had the spb mobile shell on my old phone (Epix) and loved it. But I don't think I could spend the money to put the newer version on my Tilt2. =/

What ROM's would you recommend for faster internet usage? Do they drastically change the appearance of the phone and/or do they inhibit some of the features?

No, most ROMs will be fairly similar, with minor visual changes, some feature changes, and different programs installed by default (usually the chefs favorite programs)

With Seven, make sure you don't have quite time on. In seven, hit the Menu soft key (bottom right) and click general settings. Then click the quiet time option and set the hours you do not wish to receive messages.
I think if you paid for the old version of Mobile Shell you can get the new version as well, try e-mailing one of the devs over there to help you out.

I have all of the quiet times turned off except for when roaming or low battery. When I unplugged my phone from the charger this morning it updated my e-mails like it normally does. I checked my phone again around 9:30 and the Seven settings said that it was last connected at 8:30 this morning and showed the "not connected" symbol. I had to manually refresh all data in order for it to re-connect.
If your mailserver supports IMAP I would try Schedhandler made by Camro on these forums it does IMAP IDLE great and doesn't hardly use any battery.
So I noticed Seven losing the connection again today. I then went to my connection settings and attempted to disable Data Connection. When I attempt to do this it automatically connects again. When I then go back to Seven it shows that it's trying to re-establish a connection and MAY connect.
Does anyone know why my e-mail will sometimes stay connected and then drop off irregularly?
@dalavar
I've tried many different settings (POP3 and IMAP4) using the basic MMS functions with windows 6.5 but have had issues receiving e-mails on a regular update basis. I had the same isssue with 6.1. Some times e-mails will work properly, other times I have to reboot my phone, or pray for my e-mails to receive. Even after doing a Send/Receive I still won't get e-mails on my phone at times.
I'm using sbcglobal for my e-mail, but if this keeps up I'm thinking of switching back to hotmail or gmail =/

Actually, I'm really surprised no one's been able to do a registry hack in terms of the HSDPA function.
And yeah, I agree...there's some really good chef's with cooked ROMs that blow the Death Star's crap and crippleware laden ROM to "Hades in a Longaberger". Unfortunately I've not had my phone 30 days yet, so I'm a little hesitant to flash yet. (even though I flashed my Kaiser/Tilt quite regularly once it was out of warranty)
As soon as the 30 days expire though...you bet it's gonna get flashed.

Go to your browser and type "about:config".
Find your connections and up them, the stock is like 4 connections and 6 max. I changed them both to 128 and change the page update delay to 0.

See if another email provider has this problem. I currently am connecting to the following and have experienced no errors since install:
Exchange Server
Y! Mail
gmail
POP3
Seems to be sbc related as both seven and your normal mail have issues connecting.
Sorry for the late response. SchedHandler seems to handle misconfigured or poorly configured IMAP servers very well you might want to give it a shot on your SBC account. And the author of the program is very active and makes changes sometimes daily.

Sorry guys, I am on day 3 of conversion.
The Curve:
1. About the same form factor. Slight edge to the Excalibur I think. But just about a toss up.
2. Enterprise activation on a BES is phenomenal push, faster than even Outlook desktop.
3. I can add up to 10 (I think) additional push accounts like Yahoo and Gmail. Yes, these really do push and sync deletions.
4. I can customize the alert type and number of vibrations to the e-mail account.
5. I can customize the LED color to distinguish e-mail from missed calls, etc. However, I cannot customize the LED color to the e-mail account (like you could with Treo 650 and Chatter).
6. Bluetooth is a little better. A. I don't have to keep re-pairing or resetting to Set as Stereo with my stereo headphones. B. It shot my address book onto my car, which WM5/6 never would do.
7. This thing never locks up or needs a reset.
However:
1. I do sort of miss WiFi from Excalibur. Granted, it usually didn't work. But when it did it was cool.
2. The bluetooth signal seemed a little stronger with Excalibur. My headphones cut out just a little more on the Curve.
3. I miss SiriusWM5 a little bit. You can stream XM, but no Howard on XM.
4. Windows media player showed the album cover; Blackberry media player doesn't.
5. MapPDA was a cool app that I miss.
You must miss it more than you're letting on, or you wouldn't have made that post, because really, who here has an interest in your device usage? Have fun with your new toy though!

I might be missing it less each day. Only reason I posted here was because I was using my Excalibur for months, thinking about switching to a Curve. Someone else might be in those same shoes, so here are the pro's and con's.
Can you let me know if the Curve can sync Outlook contacts and appointments/tasks like the HTC 620 does via Activesync?
Thanks.

I'm not sure. I am on a Corporate Blackberry Exchange Server, so all that stuff is synced real time OTA. There is a Blackberry Internet Service if you are not a Blackberry Exchange Server, but I don't know how that works.

What kind of WiFi problems did you have? I've been using my WiFi connection at home every day basically for 4 months now and I haven't had any problems whatsoever. The pages could load faster but it takes a bit of time for the cpu in the Dash to process all that unlike actual PCs.

BB syncs perfectly with outlook (Contacts, Tasks, Notes, Calendar), however (unless you pay for BES) it does not do it OTA, only using BB desktop Client.

Only numbers, letters and regular special characters ($,&,^, etc, everything you can find on a generic keyboard, no hex).

Both browsers on my Tilt2 (IE and Opera) seem to have some serious problems where the screen is at times unresponsive or extremely slow. This seems to happen in 3G and Wifi.
Actually, I saw these types of problems in a review at: http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/cell-phones/htc-tilt-2/10602.html which said: "Nowhere did the HTC Tilt 2 give us more trouble than in the browsers. Both the standard Internet Explorer browser and the Opera Mobile browser gave us serious trouble, with an unresponsive screen that always took numerous taps to register a click on a Web link. It was a very strange issue, as finger scrolling was much more responsive. But when we wanted to click on a link, or when we wanted to tap the address bar to change our URL, the phone would require multiple taps, which was a seriously annoying issue."
Have others experienced this? Is the phone a complete lemon? Is anyone aware of a what could be wrong and/or a fix?
Experiencing the exact same thing.
At stock, don't expect the TP2 to run flawlessly, and this device is certainly not a lemon. Flashing a custom rom to this device improves its usability, and even functionality in some areas, But of course, it depends on the rom that is installed. It would help to scour these forums as there are numerous fixes and enhancements for the WM platform that'll make you enjoy it
I am not expecting it to run flawlessly. I assume, as you are with T Mobile, that you do not have the Tilt2. My experience with the Tilt2 is that both browsers are just non-functional given the complete lack of responsiveness. I understand that there are many things that can be done to it, but it seems like it should simply not be operating like this out of the gate. I would be pleased to do what I can to increase performance, but purchasing a new product that is not functional with the goal of enhancing performance should not be acceptable. Please understand, that out of the box when I click on a link many times it simply does not work and when it does, it often takes minutes to connect (in some cases worse than a throw back to dial-up connection speeds). If this is what Windows Mobile has come to, as a consumer device it really will continue to become obsolete with a very small user base. I am hopeful that it is not WinMo as I have had Pocket PCs since they came out and hope to remain faithfull.
That said, I have done a considerable amount of searching in the forum. If there is something you would recommend for this specific browser issue, I would very much appreciate the reference. Thanks.
While I wouldn't say that Opera is "unusable", it's definitely slow. I've read on the forums that Opera Mobile 9.7, which is currently in beta, seems to be significantly faster. Though, it lacks Flash if you care about that sort of thing.
I haven't tried it yet but it seems like a worthwhile shot.

Do any of guys use skyfire(this by far the best option), also check the proxy setup, Third just heads up, when I was selecting diferent option packages from ATT they initially screwed up my data connect and I was getting block out of there proxy, once this was corrected all is well but Skyfire is still the best released product.
Skyfire works, but its not very clear unless you zoom in. I have Opera beta but you can't use the zoom slider and its only marginally better.
Iris (God rest its soul) is okay but its not fast either. I wonders why none of them are cutting the mustard.

I prefer not to use Skyfire because it's completely insecure. I went to my fantasy football website and found some other user's session logged in. Had I wanted to be a jerk, I could have dropped all of his good players and replaced them with players from the Detroit Lions.
Seriously, though...if you use Skyfire be very careful what sites you visit as all of the data is rendered remotely and will be seen by others.
CAVEAT before I begin: I had pretty good connection with Opera (on 3G) out of the box.
As others have said on this thread, first thing is to disable the AT&T proxy (Start\Tools\Proxy Manager\Disable Proxy -- then soft reset), unless you want to use AT&T's Media Mall and other bloatware that requires an Internet connection.
In Opera the proxy still sticks unless you manually edit the opera.ini file. See this post here for instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4771442#post4771442
I had to do this, or Opera would not connect at all under Wi-Fi. Speed also seems to be improved.
It sounds, though, that you're speaking more about screen sensitivity. It seems that you have to zoom in more (than on a Fuze, at least) to get a link to actually respond when touched. This may sound simplistic, but note that when the Tilt2 boots up for the first time (or after hard reset), it does not run through the screen-alignment process as the fuze and other phones do. Go to Start\Settings\System\Screen and do the alignment -- it helped a bit on my phone. And every little bit counts...
SLLLLLLLLOW Browsing
I've very disappointed with the AT&T Tilt 2. I've tried several ROMs but the MS IE is slow in all of them. In some of them the Opera gets download speeds of over 1000 kbps. However, the MS IE is usually down around 300 kbps.
This is unacceptable. I used the same sim in my original AT&T Tilt 1 and I get 1200 kbps. What gives??

That's been my experience, too. Even with an excellent 3G connection (a megabit usually, or close to it, and sometimes better than that), and with the AT&T proxy disabled, both Opera and IE are utterly unusable on my Tilt 2 with WM 6.5.
And I can't blame Touch-flo. I don't even use it.
As a result, I run Skyfire as my default browser unless I'm in a place where I can't get a strong 3G signal. Then I switch to Opera Mini. Both are fast enough to keep me very happy.
I've wasted too much time trying to get Opera to do anything other than annoy me. Try some cooked ROMs, or switch. Otherwise, you're wasting your time.
i agree
I dont even bother to tap the links anymore, i navigate through them using the arrow keys and then press enter. I find them completely unresponsive to taps.
concur that the browsers suck
Too bad that there isn't a safari port....

just bought mine yesterday and it is un-usable taking 20-30 min. to access and sign into my ebay account is pretty much un-usable. My 8925 wasn't the fastest but I coud access the web w/o taking 2-5 min per page. i also experience problem with it. My experience seem to be that if I have both IE and opera running together, it will cause the unit not responsive. So far, I kind of stuck with IE as it seem to work better than opear.
Try the Opera 10 Beta, it is masses better than Opera 9 as far as interface experience and speed. never liked IE mobile and skyfire has potential but still feels unfinished.
Opera 10 has a really nice tabbed browsing system and is finger friendly. haven't seen any responsiveness issues. The other thing to consider is what else you are running in background, is Opera 9 still running in background? it could be slowing everything else down.
BRETT
Is anyone else having this issue yet? I have asked this on the rom development page and it seems that I may be the only one experincing this.
I have NRG's 10\28 rom loaded and I have removed many of my installed programs and I can not get the Office programs to load quickly. I have Nrg's rom 10\17 or so loaded on my wife's phone but hers doesnt seem to be doing this.
I am suspecting that it is something that I am installing that is doing this but I am not sure.
I have even downloaded the office 2010 beta today and it stil does it.
It does stop doing it for about a half a day if I reboot many times till it behaves, but then after about a half a day, it is back to taking more than 60 seconds to open word or excell, then about 20 ot 25 seconds to close it.
Any ideas??
Thank you all for looking at this.
Jeff
Takes no more than a few seconds max on my Tilt 2, I don't know man.
Same porb here, i dont think its a ROM issue as it did the same thing on most of the roms i flash. i just thought i was a WM thingi, and the worst part is it takes near 10 sec to open a NEW word doc..

Finally, someone else is also having this issue.
I have a slightly older version of the Energy rom on my wife's phone and hers is always fast to open.
I have been uninstalling programs one by one to see if one of them is affecting it.
What I have found is that as I install a couple, it will start working good, then a a few hours later, it goes to 1 min to open again.
And I am not even opening a file, just click on the excell icon, so that eliminates the bad file thing.
I will let you know what I find.
So do you have many apps installed? I have a lot, to many to mention here at this time, but if you only have a few, please list them and I will see if there are any in common between us.
Thanks,
Jeff
I had this problem on my AT&T Tilt 1 a long time ago. I was able to isolate the cause of the problem to sending/receiving Email over mobile data (wouldn't happen if the update was via wifi). Unfortunately the only thing that solved my problem was a hard reset .

interesting you mentioned wifi, i just observed today that it does not take a long time to open when i am on wifi, then i switched to no wifi, and it was taking lont time to open excel.
turned wifi back on and sure enough, excell opened quickly.
i then turnrd off my wifi network plugin, (disabled my map network drive) and now it seems to be opening excell just fine reguardless of wifi or not.
i will continue to test this ane report back.

Office Mobile looks for any files of the appropriate type (e.g., *.doc files for Word) on your device to open prior to loading. Before reading this last comment I was going to suggest removing your storage card, but if you have network drives mapped it's probably attempting to reach those while loading but timing out if they're not available.

So as long as I dont have my "enable Network Folder" clicked on the HTC's Network Plugin, it all works good. As soon as I click that, and enable the network folder, then it takes forever to open office unless I have the wifi turned on.
Man I have been fighting this for months, not sure if it was a rom thing or something that I was intalling.
I hope that others who have this issue can find this post and fix thier stuff too.
Here some searchable key words, pleae add if I am missing:
Office Microsoft Excell Word forever long time
GRRR!! This is really starting to bug me!! The problem began about 6 months ago when I still had the good ol' original Tilt. I'll begin uploading, let's say, a photo. A single photo. Any size, doesn't matter. It begins uploading fine but will ALWAYS, suddenly and for no apparent reason, stop uploading. I have no idea why!
Obviously it's not a rom issue since this problem has followed me from phone to phone. I've flashed 3 or 4 separate roms on the Tilt 2 and experienced the problem with every one of them. Even the stock rom!!!
I've tried installing the cabs for removing the hidden AT&t proxies and whatnot, but it's no help.
I can't even run a speed test!! On speedtest.net it flys through the download portion at about 1.9 Mbps, the upload hits 0.81 consistently, but once the progress gets to 99% it of course stops uploading. And the speed begins to fall as the test continues running without any upload traffic.
I've tried letting it sit overnight while I slept, hoping maybe it was just hiccups in the connection or some other kind of illogical nonsense. But sure enough, I wake up and it's at the same spot it was when I left it.
I also thought it may have been that my account was somehow flagged by AT&T for too much data use, since I don't actually pay for the tethering. But I've been told MOST WinMo users don't pay for their tethering and none have had this problem? Nonetheless, I even went so far as to CLOSE MY ACCOUNT AND OPEN A NEW ONE!! Still no luck.
Uploads work great phoneside... quick, reliable... but as soon as it's connected to the computer I can't do SH8T!!!
Not through Bluetooth
Not through WiFi sharing
Not through USB
So I pray to you, the infinitely wise Gods of XDA. Please! Hear my prayers and guide me to the answer I seek!
no one knows what might cause this problem?
I don't really know why it is causing that problem. I did a quick search and many people complain about the same thing. But also I read a lot of positive responses about a few programs that help you tether. You could always try it and see if it helps.

Hey there. This is my first post but rest assured I'm not really a noob (been editing wm reg for at least 5 years...)
I am grandfathered in to an unlimited data plan with at&t (although I did have to go from $20 to $30 a month when I upgraded to the tilt2/rohdium) and I have a minor but seriously annoying problem with using xda-wifi-sharing & bittorrent under some pretty specific circumstances.
I have been using my service to download video for several years as I don't have a tv or internet any other way. I get much of my tv video from tvtorrents.com as you can download entire seasons of just about any tv worth watching.
When I am downloading a season torrent (multiple episodes, many peers etc...) my 3G/HSDPA connection times out or gets "stuck" and requires me to restart the data service on the phone. While this has happened before, rarely, it is happening very frequently now.
Using tvtorrents for these type of downloads affords many high speed seeds and I think that the number of seed/peer connections is somehow overwhelming the 3G/HSDPA data connection, causing it to time out. This never used to happen with this frequency and I'm not sure what to do.
Thanks for your help and thank Jebus for this site (and I don't even believe in Jebus...) as I would never have gotten this far without you all.
tilt2, wm 6.5 stock rom, bloat and crippleware removed
Have you tried a torrent software on the phone itself and downloaded to your Storage Card? My thought it to eliminate the tethering part to see if that has something to do with the lock out.

hmmm... wasn't aware of a bittorrent client for WM. I've been using uTorrent on my laptop for a few years now without any problems until recently. Right now my girlfriend also connects through the xda-wifi-router and this doesn't happen (at least nowhere near the frequency it happens to me). Physical tethering is a bit of a pain as I find that the orientation of the phone (in relation to laptop) and distance from my laptop significantly affects bandwidth.
I'm thinking about un/reinstalling utorrent, and maybe changing where the tilt2 is in the room... it's been working so well for so long, I'm sure I can get it to work again.
I've also had intermittent crash problems with device.exe on the tilt2, maybe this is related?
Thanks for your help
Ok, I guess that my problem was with at&t's network (damn iPhone users.. ..). Anywho, I have not made any substantial changes, yet all of the sudden, everything works fine.
I am reluctant to call at&t as they want to verify my network settings ( that have been working fine forever but might concern them as I am the network hog, not the iPhone users.. hehe). Every time I call I call from my phone and they have a hard time understanding that it is the only phone I have available.
Strangely, the very act of having one of their techs look at my account seems to fix my problem (most of the time it is that I am traveling).
Regardless, thanks for your help!
