This has only started yesterday but, Ive noticed that while my phone is plugged in at work[via USB-PC] and while using the phone as normal...the battery is draining. Ive turned off all the notifications and other misc crap i dont need and yet its draining dead withing 5 hours. Ive tried various cables but i seem to get the same issue. But the phone does charge while powered off so im kinda perplexed as to why this is happening.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue for me?
Do you have anything else connected to that USB controller (typically 2-4 ports per controller)? Each controller can put out 1000mA total, so if you have other stuff on the same controller pulling power, the phone can't get all that it needs.
The only other time I've had that happen was when I was using 4G heavily.

I was using my EVO (rooted to Warm ROM) as a GPS today driving down to NYC. The battery wasn't completely dead yet and I was using a car charger to the phone. All of a sudden, the phone just reset! I had no clue why. I used my brother's EVO for GPS and after a little while, his started to reset as well! Has this happened to anyone else with the EVO resetting for no reason after using a car charger? Even after it was shut off, I kept it plugged in and it wouldn't charge (no amber led light). When I got home, it wouldn't charge with the wall charger either. I only solved it by directly charging the battery with a cradle charger for a few minutes to give it some juice and then the phone turned on and i was able to charge it. I was just wondering why this happened and how to prevent it?
I'm wondering if it was the car charger or the car's port or w/e but i don't think the port had a problem cuz i used an actual GPS unit and plugged it and it charged fine...
what i think happened to you was your battery overheat, which will cause the phone to reboot, some rom and kernel combinations will get hot when using nav app or 4g specially while charging, and once your battery get hot enough it wont charge its a fail safe, sometime they get damaged too
A strange thing happened between my last change (last night) and this morning.
My previous charge I got 2+ days on battery.
I charged it to 100% and went to bed, woke up with 39% battery
I checked better battery stats and msm_otg is at 16+ hrs.
I've never seen this before on my phone and nothing changed at all yesterday.
I did some searching and I found that it may be used when the the phone is connected to the computer.
I started charging it via my computer but when I moved from my office to the living room later; I connected it to an AC charger.
I'm going to reboot and then recharge. I hope that it clears.
Anyone else seen this wake lock?

Same exact thing happened to me on my Sprint SGS3 after upgrading to the official Jelly Bean. I'm not rooted. Figure anything out? I've been searching my brains off.

I restarted my phone and it is nearly fully charged (charging via USB on my PC so it takes a while)
I'll update this tonight with whether or not it did the same thing.
EDIT: well after nearly 7hrs; battery seems to be fine. the msm_otg wakelock still is listed at the top, though I suspect that is only due to the fact it was listed before and it will slowly go away, we'll see.
I am at 92% so my battery life is back to normal. The other thing that was different was a charger I used, I switched it to the proper on after a little bit. Maybe the wrong charger caused it to act the way it did.
Still ok
Well this morning, I have 20hrs off charger with 82% battery left.
I am thinking that it had to be the charger it was on after charging for a bit on my PC.
Moral of the story is to always be 100% you're using the proper charger for your phone
I Think i had a bad cable that i used to connect to the pc and then i had the bad battery drain. Rebooted and charged with a good cable and the gs3 is sleeping like a baby over 2 hours off the charger and still at 100% with a couple of text messages. Thanks
These phones are very particular when it comes to the cable being used with it.
I had thought it was more so dealing with data, obviously that isn't the case.

That wakelock is related to UMS so that could be why. Make sure you have MTP or PTP selected

Yep I have MTP selected.
Was anyone able to fix this ?
I get it EACH and every freaking time i plug my phone to my home pc...
I use the original cable. It randomly happens on my work pc too (but maybe its when i carry it from home...), there, i use a cable from a motorola defy.
Both pcs with windows 8.
ps: i have MTP selected. What is UMS ? I also have usb debuging enabled
EDIT: if i reboot my phone while connected to my pc, all is fine, but i have to reboot it every day that way
Hi guys,
In my case it was easy.
I've tried everything.
Service need to change the resistance behind the power socket on the motherboard.
And now I don't have to reboot all the time. The battery can go into deep sleep.

Thanks. I was able to replace the usb port board on a similar phone (S4), which due to water damage was also having the same msm_otg wakelock issue. Fixed!
I've had my stock unrooted HOX for about a year and a half now. Recently it sometimes won't charge when it's plugged in, even though the LED lights up and the phone tells me it's supposedly charging.
It has happened when it's been at 0% and will only turn on for a minute before dying again, and it has happened when it's been at 100% and started to drop when I've started using it when it's plugged in.
This can happen from a few weeks without an incident to not charging every night, it varies a lot.
I have replaced the charger with another "official" one.
Strangely if I plug it into the USB port of a computer it will start charging just fine, but doing that isn't practical for me.
My question is basically to ask if anyone else has had the same problem and found a solution that doesn't involve sending it off to T-Mobile/EE. I have already sent it off once to fix the common wifi issue, which they didn't fix anyway.
Hello everyone. newbie here.
My sony Z1c seems to have developed a bug/issue. 2 days ago my phone was on charge, green led at the top was on and my battery showed at 100%. I unplugged the device jumped into bed, set my alarms as usual. I then woke up 2 hours later then i should of to find my z1c was dead. Nothing was running in the background etc so instantly knew something was up. Tried charging my phone at work via usb>pc and it kept saying my phone is losing charge quicker then its charging (never seen this message before) . I could turn the phone on but the battery level stayed at 2%, as soon as it was unplugged from the pc it would instantly die.
When i got home i done a few "reset" searches and come across the hold volume up and power at the same time until phone vibrates method. This now seems to allow my phone to charge normally again and the battery goes past 2%. However again today my phone went dead overnight. So the issue is still there, im just able to charge the device again.
I dont appear to have anything running in the background
havent done any firmware, software, app updates in the last couple of days (again that im aware off, unless they forced any)
also noticed the phone gets extremely hot at periods for unknown reasons?
Anyone here able to help or advice? is this a faulty battery, software, firmware issue etc? any fixes
d5503
running 4.4.4
14.4.a.0.108
Thanks in advance
Have you tried a different charger? Charge it using wall charger with supplied cable. I don't think firmware is draining your battery. Possible that u r caught up with a faulty battery if u don't have any issues with charger.
My advice "Head to Sony Service Centre asap".
Have you 'ever' installed any custom ROM on this phone then reflashed/restored something later after accquired? It could be the underlying system's battery state is different than the current running OS' one. Try calibrating the battery a couple of times to see if that make any difference.
Hello. Thank you for the replies.
The phone charges correctly via mains and usb(laptop,ps4 etc) since i done that power+volume up reset. Pretty sure my leads and plug are fine. i could try different usb leads though. the charge level is certainly showing me 100% charge
I have never used any ROM's or Roots. i dont know fully what they are. I used to have a jailbroken iphone so it sounds similar. Id be prepared to do down any of them routes if it fixes my phone
Everything updated has been official releases. I dont appear to of updated anything recently though so i cant put it down to a system update or new app update. - something might have glitched somewhere i dunno
Charged the phone during my first post and again it says its gone to 100% after a couple of hours. unplugged the charger. restarted the phone and checked nothing that hasnt been on for the last 3 months hasnt turnt on and all seems fine there. So just left it in standby
checked it 10minutes later to see charge levels. am down to 87%
using gsm battery app it says 68.9% app usage, when i click that
android system 53%
kernel (andoid os) 19.5%
then i have a list of other stuff running all be 2%
them 2 shouldnt be that high should they?
then when i go default settings>power> batt usage
android system 37%
googleplay service 21% (doesnt appear to be updating/syncing anything. should all be off. never used syncing)
screen 14%
android OS 5%
cell standby 5%
the rest of the list are 2's and 1's
phone was cool when charging, since rebooting the device and unplugging it, its now getting hot??? would of expected it to be the other way around!!!
Might want to give it a go of this:

Hi again, Jcw i done a full factory result and everything now appears to be fine now. Phone has been on for 3hours standby and on 98% battery, It would have been dead by now and extremely hot at the back. Now running alot cooler. Thanks for the advice.
Have no idea what happened. Something was seriously draining the battery though. Glad its fixed. Thanks again
Hi,
I am a long time lurker and big fan of the community. Here is my problem and steps I tried to do to fix it. My S3 was working fine on Thursday morning and I received some calls, sent some texts, etc. The phone was on my desk and all of a sudden wouldn't turn on. It had original battery in it that is 2.5+ years old and it worked well. Within last 2 weeks I noticed the battery would drop charge from full to 55% quicker than before but it was still performing. I tried charging it from PC usb, wall charger, USB power block, different USB cables and nothing worked. I read several posts here on XDA about similar problem that others experienced and tried connecting USB, getting red light and plugging battery after that and still nothing. What I was able to observe that while connected to power the phone would be able to turn on for a few seconds. Typically I would see only Samsung boot up logo and sometimes it would go to 2nd screen of Samsung Galaxy S3 and flicker and shut off. It would frequently show me empty battery sign. I also read a valuable tip about stores having old batteries before they send phones for repair and had someone call 6 stores and none of them had them.
Since the phone is able to boot up for a few seconds I did not think it was the phone and assumed it had to be the battery. I joined Amazon Prime and was able to order 2 batteries from them and had them delivered yesterday (Sunday). I also added standalone battery charger to my shopping cart but it would not be delivered in time and I removed it. I wanted it to add just in case there was a problem with USB connection on the phone and charge batteries externally. So last night I got the batteries and it is exactly the same thing, not charging and still boots up in similar fashion. One thing I was able to observe twice last night was that during one of my plug in cable, put in battery routines or maybe it was by pressing up volume & power. During two attempts instead of empty battery sign I saw a full green battery sign.
I am out of ideas on what to do. I am planning on making 2 hour round trip to Chinatown and walking around from store to store trying to find S3 standalone battery charger. Does anyone have any ideas what component could be causing this problem? Do you agree with me that USB cable must be pumping some power since the phone turns on?
