[Q] Recovery loads OK, can't flash ROM - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the Amon Ra recovery and tried to upgrade to Starburst ROM from Modaco R8. After a couple of false starts (ROM loaded OK but had various runtime problems) I noticed my SD card went "read only".
After doing a full wipe and reloading the Starburst zip, I tried to flash it from recovery, but the process stopped immediately and I was back in the Amon Ra menu. No error messages, just a complete failure to read the zip containing the ROM.
I've replaced the SD card and even tried installing a different ROM (good ole R8). Same issue.
Is it a good idea to reflash the recovery with Unrevoked or should I try something else first? Is there another way to flash a ROM than via recovery?

Flash ClockworkMod recovery via fastboot then try flashing the rom again.

Thanks, good suggestion, will give that a try, after making gold card just to soothe my nerves...

Do I need S-OFF for this?
And if so, can I still get S-OFF on the phone given I have no ROM installed?

[Q] Sudden trouble flashing ROMS.

I'm very confused as to what happened, and feel like I'm only making things worse so decided to come here. I've been rooted for about 2 months now after using Unrevoked Forever, and until last week everything was fine.
Using Rom Manager I attempted to flash Salvage Mod coming from Cyanogen 6.1.2. After wiping Data/Cache, when going to open the Zip Clockwork told me that the Rom did not exist in my SD card?
I redownloaded and tried again several times with no luck. I tried downloading other ROMS through my computer and putting them directly on my card and now I'm getting an error saying the Zip files are "(bad)"
Flashed RA Recovery through Rom Manager, the same errors, and now flashing back to Clockwork won't work. Any ideas what the problem maybe? Any solutions would be greatly appreciated
Have you tried booting to recovery directly and flashing a rom? I personally use CWM 2.6 and prefer to do all the work myself through recovery instead of hoping RomManager gets it right.
Yes I've tried booting into Recovery myself, keep getting the error that the zip. is bad

Evo Loops At HTC White Screen - No Recovery

I know I've seen other people with this problem, but I don't think I've seen a fix but I'm hoping I'm wrong.
Installed CM7 RC2 and everything works great for a month. Some random reboots but no big deal. Today I get a reboot but instead of reloading it hangs on the CM7 boot logo. I go into clockwork recovery, do a full wipe, and reboot. From then on, all I can do is loop in the white HTC screen. No ROM, no Recovery.
I've tried to flash Amon Ra recovery and a stock RUU via at PCImag file. No love. Any ideas?

I posted directions in reply to your PM. Here's the first thing to try. See if you can flash this, it's Amon Ra recovery v2.3

DONT FLASH IT.
Put in root of sdcard, boot into bootloader, update, let it boot or boot into recovery.
Lol, I gave him detailed instructions on how to flash it using the bootloader, don't worry. I was pm ing with him.

He uploaded a recovery image in a PC36IMG, so it NEEDS to be flashed in the bootloader.
Ive had the same problem for two days now and have tried everything in the book it seems. Using fastboot or manually from the bootloader, every pc36img.zip fails with an error at (8) partition update failed! or remote : 51 partition update fail. I can get the newest ruu to get me stuck at the four triangle error and then I have to flash PC36IMG_AmonRA-v2.3-hausmod_revA.zip just to get back to the htc boot screen loop (which at least lets me get back to bootloader to start the vicious cycle again) . ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Heck, even any way to make it presentable at a sprint store would even work at this point (since it says s-off I'm guessing someone in the line of repair will realize its been rooted.
p.s. I have never had any problem with my phone and have flashed just about every rom out there and I always do a full wipe and usually a format_all too. This happened about two hours after I flashed Kings UNleashed Ultra Blakk R3 ( it just did a reboot on its own and its been in this mess ever since)

Once you've gotten back into recovery, specifically, amon RA 2.3, use the MS-USB menu and copy the contents of your SD card onto an external disk drive. Afterwards, use amon RA to partition and reformat your card. When you're done, copy only the Rom and amon RA (PC36IMG) file to your SD card. Shut down your device. Now while pressing the down volume key, press the power button to enter the hboot screen and pay attention to see whether or not you still have S-OFF. If you do not, you need to re-root. If you do, great. Reflash amon RA and afterwards, reboot into recovery and flash the rom.

Think we have different problems. Every time I try to flash something new it completes fine, but it still boot loops. Hell, yours might be fixable.
I've tried everything now with no luck. Everything updates and completes but has absolutely no effect on the boot looping. This is really insane and my advice to anyone would be to stop using CM7 immediately as it seems to be confined to that ROM.
If anyone else has had this exact problem please post, I want to get a tally of how many people are affected and try to find a commonality.
Bootlooping is caused by incorrectly flashing, or flashing something that the phone "doesn't like," whether it be a kernel, a theme, ect.

But my phone ran for a month without any problems except for some random reboots which seem to be common with this phone in general. I didn't add software or flash anything before this happened, it just happened. That seems to be the experience most people are having, the only thing in common is that they were running CM7 or had been running it recently and tried to flash to a different rom.
What software problem wouldn't be corrected by a successfully completed reflash with a stock RUU? That's the major question.
Hmm, that is awkward; at that point, I would just take it in if you're still getting random reboots. Been on CM7 for the longest and no random reboots on my end.

EXACTLY! and thus the reason I wanted the OP to follow the directions I gave. Being that he or she would have had a completely fresh recovery, a freshly partitioned & formatted SD card and only the rom on the card to flash, barring a mechanical issue, the only possible explanation would be a corrupted rom zip file or a corrupted nandroid backup if that is what was being used. Corruption happens. The OP should re-download a fresh copy of the rom, re-wipe and re-flash, at least in my opinion....

Try flashing amon_ra 2.3....place on sdcard, go into the bootloader, update, reboot, then try the bootloader. But before you do, select clear storage, which will do a factory reset, to see if that helps.

Already tried it, no dice. Goes through fine but then keeps bootlooping. On a side note, is there a way to get S-On through the bootloader since I can't access recovery?
You would have to download the RUU exe and then run the phone in fastboot while connected to the pc.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear . Days of reading every post in any thread I can find has left me running on no sleep. The huge problem is that no matter what recovery rom is flashed it wont let me boot into RECOVERY MODE. It flashes fine whether it is from the sd or through cmd using fastboot (Ive tried almost every version including the newest of both Amen RA and Clockwork). This gets me stuck in the white HTC screen boot loop. If I flash a RUU it will at least hang with a partition error and get stuck in the four triangle error, which will at least let you charge the battery so I can start all over again. Is there maybe a way to wipe the partition or reformat in fastboot as that is really the only thing working (regular adb wont detect). It seems a ton of people have been popping up with this same problem out of the blue the last few days.

[Q] Can't flash any gingerbread ROM

Hi
I'm trying to flash a gingerbread rom to my desire but I always end up being stuck on the HTC logo. I tried several ROMS( opendesire, modaco with sense and without, some more too but can't remember the names,... ) The only gingerbread ROM that installs is CM7, but i have market problems that annoy the hell out of me ( can't find certain apps, need to hack to install bigger apps ). A shame because i really like CM, but i want to compare with others
Any idea why gingerbread won't flash correctly. I have tried several froyo ROMS without any issues before, by the way
I have
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
RADIO-5.14.05.17
thx
ntdst
Did you remember to wipe your data between each different install?
That's the most common problem when you get stuck at boot.
i use rom-manager and always create a back-up and wipe.
I also tried with an empty SD-Card and repartioned it ( with rom-manager ). The results are always the same, every gingerbread rom gets stuck. I thought there was something wrong with the partitions or maybe i need s-off for gingerbread... ?
What version of CWM do you have? Did you update manually to the new radio for the GB Roms?

I'm using Rom Manager v4.2.0.2
It is possible that i flashed that radio with a previous modaco sense/froyo ROM.
should i first flash that one you mention and then try again?
Okay, Rom Manager Is not a recovery What's your recovery exactly?
And what ROMs do you try to flash?
AFAIK, you need to flash that first in order to get booted.
sorry clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 is current recovery
I really tried several ROMS
Modaco sense gingerbread
Modaco without sense
opendesire
oxygen
etc...
all and always stuck on HTC Logo except for CM7, that one works fine except for the market issues
- Clockworkmod Recovery 3.x.x.x (Recommended to be used! 2.x recoveries MAY have some problems with the updater-script => boot loop)

I found this in one of the ROM threads.
So my suggestion:
First try to update the radio to the newest (alredy posted the link).
If that does not help, then try to update your recovery.
updating radio and flashing updates did not help
i'm still stuck when trying to install oxygen
I could use some help in updating my recovery. I f i do this with rom manager 2.5.0.7 is the most recent.
I seems there's a 2.5.1.2 out and 3.x.x.x is not advised. Is there an update zip somewhere to use?
People report that Insertcoin S v22 can be installed with 2.5.0.7
Make sure you do a full wipe in THE RECOVERY, not ROM Manager or any program.
Too boot into recovery hold down Power+Vol Down while phone is off.
There:
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. Wipe cahce
3. Under advanced menu > Wipe dalvik-cache
Also make sure your SD card is partitioned right.
And for the update - you can only update your recovery if you are S-OFF or you use Unrevoked3 with a custom recovery image.
Grab a copy of Ubuntu and check that the apps2sd partition on your card is formatted correctly. I tried all ways of formatting and partitioning (via clockwork/rom manager) and it never formatted correctly and always caused HTC boot sticking.
If I completely reformatted SD and reflashed an older rom (like Leedroid 2.3) would then boot fine. I then used Rom Manager to repartition & format SD, boot ubuntu (live CD is enough - no install required) then reformatted partition to EXT4, flashed and worked fine.
Also, is 2.5.0.7 your TRUE recovery version? Turn your phone on with vol-down held then select recovery - does the version change to an older one? If this is the case you may need to re-root is (Unrevoked) to update your recovery version permanantly.
Hope that helps.
If you are S-off you can flash newest recovery using fastboot, this flash would be permanent!
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-bravo.img
i agree with TMSsecret,
the gingerbread ROMs i have used seem to need a more recent version of HBOOT. First time I tried to flash LeeDroid 3.0.2, it didnt work. Applied S-OFF (which updates your HBOOT during the process) and tried again, worked no worries. Also, if you're keen to install the latest ROMs, upgrade to clockworkmod recovery 3.x... It took me a few tries to get FASTBOOT working properly (possibly because my version of windows XP has had too long to decompose), but if you persevere, it will work.
The best way to make sure your ROM will work is a thorough research session. Not slagging you at all, just pointing out the obvious. Look up everything to do with your intended ROM and read the threads.

Only Starting Up On Bootloader, Help?

I started to install the kings roms. Well i was using clock work recovery and it was giving me some trouble so, i used the ROM Manager to use alternative flash RA. Well i go into recovery, wipe everything, then i flashed the kings rom. I reboot the system and it instantly goes into bootloader, im trying everything. I try to use a nandroid back up to back it up but it says i can't and im in the RA recovery atm. and no matter what i do, clear storage, wipe data off of the settings in bootloader it keeps taking me back to bootloader can anyone help me?

I'm assuming you're still S-OFF.
Go to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060
and try one of the latest PC36IMG files. Download one, rename it PC36IMG, and put it on your SD card. Boot into the bootloader and accept the update.
See if that works. Hopefully, it will at least allow your phone to restart into an operating system. From there the phone can be rerooted by running a PC36IMG for the recovery, and then flashing a superuser.zip file. But first you need to just get the phone running properly.

[Q] Ruined EVO 4G. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!

I purchased my first Android phone used. It is an Sprint HTC EVO 4G. The phone was already rooted. I tried to unroot so I could apply new HTC software update. New at this and screwed the whole phone up. There is nothing left on the sd card. I somehow wiped everything from the phone as well apparently. The phone goes straight to bootloader everytime I power on. I can go into recovery and all that, but there is nothing there to flash or anything. Is it permanently ruined?
Your phone is not ruined, if you can get into recovery your good to go.
1. download new rom you want to try
2. push to sd card via usb-ms toggle option in recovery
3. wipe all on phone (cache, dalvik, data, etc.) in recovery
4. Flash zip of new rom in recovery
5. reboot phone, viola!
6. go back into revovery, goto backup option and do a nandroid
Happy flashing!!!
remember: if phone is rooted do not apply update through carrier. All update musts come thru xda

Correct, but only if your bootloader still reads S-OFF at the top. If so, you are good. If not, we need more information from your bootloader screen, such as your Hboot number and radio.
Where can I get a rom to download? Do I just place it on my sd card? I found a rom zip file downloaded it and flashed it from sd card. Everytime I still get a message saying install aborted.

Choose a different rom. What recovery do you have? You may need Amon Ra to flash certain zips. The stock rooted rom should be compatible with all recoveries. If you're trying to flash that, then redownload it and try again.
If you want to switch to Amon Ra, download the PC36IMG here and put it on the root of your SD card. Boot into the bootloader and the phone will find the file and ask you to update - select yes. When it finishes, select no when it asks you to reboot and select recovery. This is assuming that you're using ClockworkMod since you had installation issues, but there's no reason to flash it if you're already using it. If you're already using it and you flash it, it won't hurt anything.
This is assuming that you have s-off. If you have s-on but still have a recovery, you may be able to flash some things in recovery but you won't be able to flash a recovery through hboot. If you're s-on with recovery, you can either flash Unrevoked Forever through recovery (if your hboot/radio are compatible) or you can finish the unrooting process and reroot if you want to do so.
Supersonic Evo 4G | MIUI | Tapatalk
I have tried flashing PC36IMG prior and it says it applies the update, but then I'm right back where I started on next reboot. When I clicked your HERE link above it goes to a blank page. I currently show S-OFF in the bootloader.
Ok, so when you get to boot loader, click on recovery and which recovery do you have?
If I were you, I would go to the Dev section, look for the stock/rooted ROM and put that on your SD Card. Hopefully you have Amon Ra for your recovery.
Go to wipe, and wipe every option there is there, except SD Card: and Battery Stats, if you're not fully charged, then flash the ROM. Once it's booted, set up your Google account, etc, then go back to recovery and make a nandroid. I always save everything except Cache.
NOW, you'll have a good base to go from
i have the same prob.my buddy gave me evo to fix.sd card got wiped.i have the green recovery,i need a stock rom.
