How to tell if you have AMOLED or LCD? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought mine off of e-bay and I still to this day have no idea. Had it for a few months now.

Remove the battery. On the phone you'll see '001' '002' or '003'. 3 is SLCD, 1 and 2 are AMOLED.

Thanks.
I have 002 and have never been disappointed with screen quality or performance, good to know.

Very interesting writeup here: http://smartphoneblogging.com/2010/09/nexus-one-slcd-vs-nexus-one-amoled-showdown-which-screen-technology-is-better/.
With a quick glance the displays perform almost identically. I have the SLCD Dinc and arguably it has better viewing characteristics. I'd still prefer an AMOLED Dinc though because I'm convinced you could squeeze a little more battery time out of it.

Odd, never had any issue reading text. The picture quality of those pics don't look all that great.
I guess they're close enough in relation that it really doesn't matter.

*SLCD or AMOLED*

As you all know, the new batch of Desire for Telus will come with SLCD.
androidpolice.com/2010/07/15/htc-desire-headed-to-canada-on-telus
I'm not from Canada so just wondering should I wait for SLCD to available worldwide or just grab the current AMOLED.
The main concern of mine is AMOLED with pinkish issue.
Anyone can tell me which is better ? Please to explain to me as I'm totally don't have any knowledge regarding SLCD & AMOLED.
Many thanks

I think it comes down to personal preference. I kind of like the AMOLED screen, and mine has a very soft neuance of a pinkish hue. But nothing that is annoying or anything. The SLCD is as you know the secondary preference of HTC, but it seems to be as good as the first choice..
I genuinely think if I wasn't a member of this forum and read pretty much everything about the desire, I wouldn't have noticed the pinkish tint to grey colours... That's just me, it really isn't bad and certainly not a deal breaker. For how often that colour even shows up, its not worth concerning yourself about. If you want AMOLED over an SLCD screen which I think is probably wiser seeing as it was HTC's first choice then get one now.. All I can say is the screens beautiful and full of colour, not having seen SLCD screens I can't say if it will be any different but unless its an improvement, then get an AMOLED one

Can't agree more. Haven't seen a SLCD live but I really like the shiny colors and this is enough reason for me to choose AMOLED over lcd I really don't care about the slight pink effect and anyway it's almost gone in 2.2.
I'm really happy with my desire

If you don't notice anything wrong with the screen on a Desire with amoled screen then don't bother with the canadian version.
Some people are just more geeky and uptight about these things.
Personally the oversaturated colors was the first thing I noticed when I saw the phone in a shop without having read about the issue on the internet.
Amoled: The colors is punchier and fuller, the blacks will be deeper.
This sounds really good and most people dont find the oled on the desire bad
at all. Because of the type of amoled they used on the desire the screen wont
seem as sharp as a hvga screen should be. If you want to see amoled screen
done right, check out the samsung omnia hd, just perfect.
Lcd: The colors arent as full but after having had a tp2 for 6 months i think it looks really good anyway. Any lcd screen with hvga resolution will appear alot sharper than the one on the desire. Also i found while the colors werent as deep as on a oled i found the color spectrum to appear wider than on desire. Dont know if thats true that just the way it appears to me and what I prefer.
The Slcd they will use on the canadian Desire will be a lcd with a
ips panel. ips panels arent normally used on cell phones but alot of
graphics artists use them on lcd monitors when doing photo work.
I think theyre supposed to show colors more accuratley than
tn or pva panels.
I know the viewing angles on them are really good,
like 160 degrees. The downside has been that they don't have quite as
fast response time as tn or pva panels but it isnt a big deal if youre
not a twitch fps player.
Also, I read that SLCD drains more power than AMOLED.

It is a contradiction. If colors are deeper then spectrum is wider. Amoled can display colors which LCD can't, and which doesn't even exists in any normal (sRGB) picture

Consider you need additional 200 liters everyday to clean them and stables. Does it matter at all which one drinks more?

I don't think that the colors are deeper and the color spectrum or color space is the same thing, maybe im wrong. I found the colors the desire screen showed were deeper, by deeper i mean more intense and fuller, as one should expect from a oled display. To me, the colorspace didnt seem as wide as on my tp2's lcd screen. That's my personal impression of it. It could be because of the pinkish hue wish also might add to the oversaturation of some colors. I found the color red specially to be oversaturated wich gave me the impression of the colorspace not to be so wide.
It's true that Amoled can show more colors than lcd, at least when oled
is done right.

You know what, im not sure that I can. I was pretty sure that ive read somewhere that S-lcd is the buzzword for Samsung's and Sony's joint venture for creating newer generation lcd displays with ips panels.
But now that I look for it im not so sure. I was certain i read an post on Engadget where they clearly stated that it was ips panel but I cant find that now.
There is one source vaugley explaining it here:
http://androidcommunity.com/htc-for...ft-lcd-from-amoled-due-to-shortages-20100625/
But it says:
"But, the big question is: what is Super TFT LCD? Well, you’ve actually heard of it before, because it has a nickname that’s come up recently in the news (after the announcement of a certain tablet). Super TFT LCD’s nickname is IPS. Which, yes, became “famous” thanks to Apple’s iPad tablet. It provides a wide viewing angle, and provides very clear images — even if the colors aren’t as “distinguished” when compared to an AMOLED display."
But the source of those news is:
http://www.oled-display.net/the-sma...tc-must-switch-the-display-from-amoled-to-lcd
Wich really doesnt say anything about being an ips panel
If the SLCD is even vaguely readable in direct sunlight, go for it. Because the AMOLED isn't, I don't care what people claim.
If it's an IPS panel, the I'd be very tempted to give 'SLCD' a try.
But whenever I pick up another phone since getting my Desire I notice the muddy, bleeding blacks that OLED eliminates.
It's official now. Wondering any review which is better..

That video kinda makes me feel good about having an AMOLED screen.
There's no screens named SLCD. S-LCD is the COMPANY that makes the screens wich will replace AMOLED-screens on HTC DESIRE. S-LCD is a joint venture between Samsung and Sony. According to wikipedi, S-LCD makes S-PVA panels (wich is even worse than IPS). The video showing the "new" screen on desire is clearly a S-PVA panel.

Patterned vertical alignment and super patterned vertical alignment (S-PVA) are alternative versions of MVA technology offered by Samsung's and Sony's joint venture S-LCD. Developed independently, they offer similar features to MVA, but with higher contrast ratios of up to 3000:1.....
PVA and S-PVA offer the best black depth of any LCD type along with wide viewing angles. S-PVA also offers fast response times using modern RTC technologies.
Source: Search Wikipedia for TFT LCD
I've had a new HTC Desire with S-LCD in my hand for a while, along with my old Amoled one.
It's surely a lot better than my old LCD (Touch HD).
What impressed me is the clarity of the display, the whites, the good contrast compared to old LCD and the fact that (I think) the phone is lighter.
Of course blacks and contrast are miles better on amoled.
But where it failed me, is better readability in direct sunlight. It's more or less the same as amoled, which is (for me) average. I can live with that, but I expected the S-LCD to compensate more for its shortcomings.
All in all, I feared worse, but I would take amoled any day.
according to my box, I have the amoled screen.
Must say I'm pleased with whatever it is !!

[Q] Incredible questions asap

I need some help please. I might buy this tonight. Just have couple questions. Please forgive the rush or if answers are elsewhere.
1: how does the incredible screen compare to fascinate and droid x? It has 3.7" 800x480 and droid x and fascinate bigger but same res.
Can I get swype for the incredible and how?
Can I get a stylus for incredible local in Seattle WA or online? I prefer stylus with swype.
How is smoothness of os?
Do the button on bottom light up good and be better then fascinate? Fascinate only lights up after you touch. That's stupid. I need to see them in dark rooms.
How hard to have roms? Don't wanna brick. Might like to try roms.
How is browser text reflow and smoothness of it and zooming?
Was thinking of getting it now on 1 year contract then upgrade.
I tried the fascinate but took it back the next day. Hated how the button lights only lit up after you touch them and they wouldn't stay lit long.
Was hoping for bit better text quality like reading the web. I have iPod touch 2nd gen and screen sucks compared to new stuff.
Thanks
Well... the Incredible is a badass phone, and all the things you're looking for are some of the greatest features of the phone. There are a plethora of custom ROMs available, most of which are stable and currently supported. Incredible had the first from-source Gingerbread ROM, and now sports at least 3 stable Gingerbread ROMs... As for a stylus, you might find luck with a Capacitive Stylus from HTC, and you can install Swype, but there are many other excellent keyboard options available that I personally prefer over any sort of Swype technology. It has WiFi Tethering, very fast browser, and Flash video built in.
All that being said, if you already have a decent phone and aren't in a big hurry to get a new phone, you might want to wait until the HTC Thunderbolt is released, as it is the Incredible's big brother - and identical to the Evo in MOST features.

I love it. I think those screens are a little to big. The phone is compact and the screen is big enough

Has one of the fastest processors out there...smooth as it gets compared to other phones out now.

Thanks guys.
How does the bottom 4 button lights work?
How is the screen quality for text? Reading the web and stuff. I'm just curious because it's important to me. The size is smaller then I prefer but it's not bad considering I can get it for cheap with the 1 year contract and my business discount.
The thunderbolt seems cool. Just upset that they kept the same dang resolution. To me that's pathetic and unacceptable. Ticks me off lol. I want 1024x768 or whatever on a 4" or bigger. Meaning wish list. iPhone screen is amazing and would love something like that. I would like it bright too.
Umm. How would a rom be put on it? Is it simple like just install and it does everything?
I am just nervous because of thunderbolt coming and it's screen etc. I'm thinking of cost and myself being so impatient. I have no phone now. Took fascinate back next day after I bought it and canceled my line. Only had it the one day.
Where are some pics of roms?
I thank you all very much.
Hi,
Some questions I can help with; others, not so much.
I converted to the Incredible from BlackBerry a couple of weeks ago, and one aspect of the learning curve has been getting accustomed to the text size. I notice it mostly on the browser. The screen zoom is a huge plus for me.
I've tried Swipe (beta), but without a stylus. It worked pretty darn good--and I liked its accuracy, as well. It just stopped working one day, though; don't know why.
Pictures of ROMs... The ROMs aren't hardware; they are firmware. Do you mean screenshots of the different ROMs? Those are available by doing a search, here or elsewhere.
Good luck with your purchase, and please post back here with your choice.
Cheers!

Screenshots yeah.
I had the Touch pro 2 and loved swype. I wrote more just to use it. Stylus makes it easier cus I could see the letters better.
How clear is the text and how do the lights work on the buttons? I'm curious of how good thunderbolt screen will be. Same res.
Lights on the buttons are based on room lighting. If the room is bright, the buttons are off. If room is dark, the buttons are lit whenever the screen is lit. The buttons are very bright. I actually wished they had a brightness setting so I could turn them down, that's how bright they are.
If you're getting a new phone, as long as it's not new old stock, I think it should have the SLCD screen which is very crisp and sharp. Most people prefer the AMOLED for some reason, but I prefer the SLCD by far. The AMOLED screen looks grainy, like it has a worse dot pitch than the SLCD. Ever heard of the term "screen door effect" to describe a video screen with too much gap between the pixels? That's how the AMOLED looks to me. The colors are very vibrant, but TOO vibrant, very over-saturated and fake looking. The SLCD, in comparison, is very crisp and smooth, text is much crisper and sharper. Colors look much more natural. You can tell the AMOLED from SLCD by going to Settings -> About Phone -> Hardware Information. Look for Hardware Version. 0002 = AMOLED, 0003 = SLCD.
Thanks so much.
I went today a few hrs ago and got the incredible. 14 day return window so I may exchange it for the thunderbolt. I got a clear screen protector and case. Not antiglare as that makes it look like I'm looking through a screen. So I prefer clear.
Got it for around $160 or so and a $50 mail in rebate on top of that bringing it to about $120-$140 total for the phone and 1 year contract.
Hardware says 0003.
Screen is Very nice. Crisp. Smooth ui. Nice lighting on the capacitive buttons. Don't like the htc keyboard though. Need swype. How do I do that? Box says it has 2gb sd card preinstalled. I thought it had 8gb storage?
Hmm. Once I get swype and if I like it I'll be able to get a stylus verizon sells for the iPad. Capacitive stylus is all it is. Awesome cus it's available in the store. I didn't get it cus I want to get swype on here first.

to get swype go here http://beta.swype.com/ and I think that it is still open but I'm not sure... then when you get the email dl the installer and install swype... remember to go to keyboards and select swype as an input method but I think the installer does it for you automatic...
the 003 is a SLCD which looks great but the amoled original has deeper contrast...
honestly the galaxy s screen is the best screen in verizons line up but the samsung ui isn't as polished as HTC sense... enjoy your incredible
It should also be mentioned that the Amoled screen also suffers from burn in. I have had mine less than 6 months and the notification bar clock and the buttons for Google Listen show plainly on any white screen .Even with insurance (best buy) there is a $150 deductible and the loaner is a pos flip phone.
Also keep metal filings, rust, fine steal wool and the like away from the rear speaker. Magnetic/ferrous stuff can get in there and will make it sound like it is blown.
One other thing, If you are going to get a case I have to recommend the 3 layer armor case from Seidio. Normally I swear by OtterBox but they pushed the Inc aside for the Iphone. The reviews for the armored OtterBox have mentioned a loose fit and such. I have no such issues with the Seidio. I went with the armored 3 layer one w/belt clip and have been very satisfied. I cried when I dropped my first Dinc without a case.
You also might want to think about a spare battery and a charger for it. Bright screens and 1ghz cpus eat 1300mAh batterys for brunch. At least that is when mine dies, I wake 5am so about 5-6 hours full use, streaming wifi audio out of speaker with gps going, and widgets all over the place. I got the 1750 that fits with the same stock back so I can still use standard cases.
All and all. I Love this phone.
Yikes! I had no idea AMOLED suffers burn-in. It makes complete sense though, it just never occurred to me before. I searched Google and found many people reported it.
Yes, the Incredible comes with a 2GB SD card, but it does have 8GB of storage too. So altogether you have 10GB.
Just don't leave the screen on for over a 8 hour period, otherwise you should be fine

I like my droid incredible. Got it yesterday. Got stylus for using it with swype today. I can't even imagine how awesome it'd be with a much higher res.
I got the phone for $130 about for 1 year cost. After $50 rebate of course. Actually it cost me $169 with 1 year cost. Then $120 after the rebate. So this should be fine for a year and hopefully HTC will release a 4.3" screen with big resolution.

[Review] Got my Galaxy Nexus, US charger included.

Hello,
This is a a very short review of my imported Nexus from Expansys. This will go over more nitpick feature some us care about about in terms on quality not the phone.
On thing that is strange to me is that I have 4.01 out of the box but mine also came with a US charger, I have read that expansys sent adapters for others. If this is an import how did I get the US charger inside? Did this happen to anyone else?
The phone is very light and impressive, ICS is agreat OS right away.
Screen Issue - My eyes are sharp and within 30 seconds I can see these displays have the same issues as the GSII seen here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320942
It very obvious on grey's but heard to see in the systems blues. The screen shots in the link is still an issue even though its a pentile display.
Pentile - I hate pentile so much its not funny, I actuallly hope they go out of business but I have to say it way easier on the eyes the the lower resolutions displays. I have to squint to see the ridges but they are still there plain as day.
If you hate pentile I would say that this has a 65-70% chance that this phone will not bother you.
Stutters - I am disappointed that 2 of 5 button press to the app drawer produces that little stutter. I can make it constantly happen and I have installed zero apps yet nor messed with widgets.
I love the phone and don't get me wrong I am not dissing the phone just an impression from someone who has had almost every model that came out.
I did not post anything positive on purpose because so many articles already did a great job of highlighting the good stuff.

Should i get this phone?

Yeah we all heard about the screen quality issues and stuff, But is it really that bad? I would love to get one coming from the og pixel xl. But do you guys recommend me getting one?
I got a P2XL 64BG black to replace my 1st Gen Pixel 128GB and overall I'm happy with my purchase. That's not to say the display is perfect, I do have the blue shift when I look at it sideways and I also don't really like the bland colors. I haven't had any issues with burn-in yet though I did install the 8.1 beta to make sure that the soft keys don't burn in. That said Google increasing the warranty to 2 years, the beta dims the soft keys and Google is promising a software update that will offer a more saturated color scheme.....so between what Google has done and are in process of doing I am not really too concerned about the display issues. Display aside it's a great phone, it doesn't get warm like my Pixel did, it's very fast, smooth, great battery life and the 3 years of OS updates is a great perk. I can't speak for anyone else but I am happy with my purchase and will be keeping my P2XL. The best advice I can offer is what others have said in other threads, go to a store and check one out for yourself then decide.
It rocks. Get it.
i love my phone. im coming from the OG pixel
all the negative reviewers are just dumb imho
I highly recommend it for fun on XDA! But it's your decision...
I love the phone too. Only grip is the fingerprint reader. Finger needs to be dry & clean. Otherwise it won't work well.
Go for it. I upgraded to P2XL from Nexus 6

I have had mine for nearly two weeks and it is absolutely stunning. Yeah I have a bit of the blue shift (to be expected on most OLED displays) that I don't mind at all, haven't seen much burn-in at all but have moved over to immersive mode via ADB until they release some additional screen fixes/improvements to try and help with it, haven't seen any black smearing whatsoever, etc. In regards to the bland colors, Google announced saturation mode that I imagine will come with the December release? This will be x amount more than the current vibrant mode or whatever it is, I believe it is +10%+, not certain on how much more saturation mode will be, if you dig more vibrant colors and all. I actually prefer, the more true-looking, duller colors but do have vibrant mode turned on (not much of noticeable difference), will play around with "saturation mode" once available but will likely stick with the duller look, saturation mode may be good for video viewing/editing and watching movies/videos.
Like the first poster said, the phone is great, does not get warm, incredibly fast and feels buttery smooth, the battery life is phenomenal, 2 years of warranty and 3 years of OS updates. Could not be happier. I almost got 50 hours out of my phone the other day, probably would have but needed to head out so wanted to throw it on charger, ended up charging it at 7% and about 48 hours off charger, granted I barely had screen on (4 hours) as it was a busy weekend where I didn't need my phone much but all in all very impressed as I have quite possibly every little battery sucker turned on on the phone. I did do some GPSing, lots of music, texting, some snapchatting, lots of Twitter feeds loading, etc. but I'd say mostly light to moderate use, impressed nonetheless.
In the end, it is your choice but I could not be happier with my purchase and would do it all over again, had I known about screen issues upfront.
EDIT: I take back the saturation mode coming in December release.....it is here and available in the November release. I will post screens to a different thread and can provide a link to it later but just thought I'd let you all know.

Yes
Disregarding screen issues that don't even bother me personally. The colors I know will be fixed either by Google or of not with root and custom kernele we will be able to fix that. The phone is amazing. If you do paranoid about the screen stop at a Verizon location and look at it even if you don't have verizon, but I don't recommend buying in through Verizon! :highfive:
I've had mine almost 2 weeks and really haven't found any reason to not love it.
I did a comparison of the screen / blue tint HERE if you want to see a bunch of side by side comparisons.
But honestly, like I've told everyone who's asked: get one, keep it a week, use it play with it, run it through your daily use, and then make the call to keep it or return it.
Nearly every aspect of liking a device is subjective to each person's individual likes and tastes.
I'd hate to see you cheat yourself out of a great device because someone else said it sucked, or had this flaw.
Get it. If you hate it, or just can't get over the blue tint, return it and move on
No one knows better than YOU what you'll like.
If you have to ask, then the answer is NO!
The device is only for self-minded individuals.

False statement. The update only sorted the colours... More saturation. Most of the issues are hardware. It's not just a few batches. You don't have to be picky to not be happy with the issues...at the high price too. It's been proven the LG p oled in most cases is sub par

Did it? It didn't provide the dimming of the home back and recent buttons to help prevent burn-in? It didn't update brightness configs? It wasn't just colors...
And yes not all batches have the burn-in or even the severe blue tinting issues. I have no signs of burn-in and compared my phone to another P2XL and my blue tinting is hardly visible when my buddies is easily noticed. He does not have any noticeable burn-in either.
I understand that a lot of it is hardware related but there can be improvements on software side to help make the screen last as long as possible as we all know OLEDs decay over time regardless. Is it sub par, it very well may be, but to the average user I dont know if they will notice it being sub par versus superb. I honestly have zero gripes with screen, it is highly objective, but so is the term "good screen".
And, as I mentioned in my post, in the end it will be up to the end user to decide if the screen is bad or not.
I love my Pixel 2 XL. It's the best phone I've ever used and that's with five years of selling phones.
The screen isn't as good as Samsungs. I wish that it was, especially considering the price tag. But the screen is not bad but any means. The blue tint is a design choice. It doesn't bother me. I would like a wider color gamut than just the RGB colorspace and the new "saturated" option just seems to make everything more saturated as opposed to just enabling super saturated colors to be displayed. I find that very disappointing. But that is fixable...
I could go on and nitpick the rest of the phone, but truly the reason to buy this phone above all others is the software. It's buttery smooth. It makes the other companies software look bit silly.
I would recommend the phone. It was otherwise perfect for me if not the screen, and the screen is not that bad especially after the OS update yesterday. I don't see any graininess. I like the natural color more (and now you can change to saturated mode), there is very slight screen burn in or image retention (which I have to look for it by downloading a screen test app and adjust the screen brightness and environment lighting to be able to see, normally I just can't see it). The worst about the screen for me is the blue tint. It was very noticeable when I first switch on the phone, perhaps I specifically look for it after reading all the comments everywhere. After using it for a week, it becomes less and less noticeable. And now in the saturated mode, the blue tint becomes the normal color I am used to, while the normal color when viewed straight on becomes a vibrant and saturated one that everyone else wants.
However, I agree with others that you can go to a verizon store and have a look yourself. And buy and try for a week then decide whether you want to return it.
If google had gone with a samsung panel this would have been the best phone every

And more RAM, and a headphone jack... I would agree absolutely.

LCD vs AMoLED

Apparently the last time this came up in the forums was 2013, I just did a search. I have say, and am curious to responses, I truly prefer lcd on my htc10 or my essential phone. I tried a LG v30, and today just bought a pixel 2 xl, and my wife has a one plus 6t, and I have to say, even though my pixel 2 xl has a higher point than my htc10 or PH-1, the display looks blurry and crappy, same with the one plus 6t, when compared to my essential and htc 10.
What am I missing? Am I crazy, or blind? The entire planet seems to prefer AMOLED, and I don't think they hold a candle to a good LED display, even one of a lesser PPI. Am I nuts? Just curious to hear some others' thoughts.

You are not crazy i prefer Super LCD as well thats is also the main reason HTC to stick with LCD and making it even better the Latest Super LCD 6 that is in U11Plus and u12Plus is really well made display.
It is true that the Amoled have more crisp colors and consume less power the black is black and so on but in another situation the AMOLED is so crisp that is unreal and to sharp for the eyes it is okay to use it on a regular basis but if you use 5 hours non stop an Amoled led say S9 Plus you will feel the difference that your eyes prefer good LCD for sure and the LCD have more natural colors and have t osay REALISTIC
today tech the marketing is VIVID screen and the people buy it but on the same time we all know that in real let me say you shoot a domato in your Amoled the domato will been even MORE RED than it is on reality so for me this is unreal thats why one of the main reasons as well when you look at photos to see them so crisp sharp like Anime.
It is not so hard or so expensive to put an Amoled screen on a phone like we can see even the middle phone range from China that cost under 200 Bucks are with Amoleds the reason some companys to stick with LCD is because they have other ideas.
Im waiting to see what kind of display the hTC will use in the 2019 flagship.
I personally feel the same as @tsalta I have had several phones, I just feel like LCD screens just look much more real. I had a one plus 3 before my HTC 10 and I could never replicate the HTC 10s look on a that. Its just impossible. I spent weeks. But I feel conflicted amoled screens offer very good efficiency but after using it to long MY EYES HURT. there needs to be some sort of hybrid creation between led and lcd

You read my mind in the future will have some hybrid im not saying HTC will do it for sure i hope but the future is to be the benefits of Amoled with the Benefits of the LCD im sure we are not far from seeing this.
