Hi All,
After having HTC Windows mobile phones for quite a few years, i've gone to an Android Motorola Defy.
Its frustrating for me to get used to, I love the idea of Cab files and the simple installs. The .apk system seems to be the go, but my question relates to the Market.
Is there a market app for the Defy? If so is there any reason for it not to be there from the start?
I setup a google account, but there isnt a market in the launcher, i have been through searching for the vending.apk which another site had said was the market installer.
Tried downloading a market.apk file but it has a parsing error...
Used astro file manager searching everywhere for anything i thought could work.
What do i need to do?
Any info/suggestions welcome!
Cheers,
Nathan.
thats strange, what rom are u using?
Its a stock rom, literally only got the phone today!
From the about phone details
moto_version.2.54.0.mb525.Retail.en.ME1
firmware version 2.1-Update1
Kernel 2.6.29
I thought it was odd to be honest.
My mates HTC Desire worked out of the box...as many others seem to.
Ok,
I think i found a way round it, after a bit more searching i found a vending.apk that works on this rom.
Heres a link in case anyone has similar probs, there is an Apk file in the zip file in the system/app folder, running that on the defy it had an error on install but closed and restarted and all appears ok!
http://www.mediafire.com/?qacks5flbor595z
Correction, - all appears ok, but after trying to install one or two apps it comes up with an error.
the application market (processcom.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly please try again. (Force close)
this is a bit odd as it browses and does everything as normal untill it begins to download then crashes.
thats the first time i see 2.54 build
I thought 2.51 was the latest official
It seems that hard to know whats going on with it all the motoblur stuff and the customised roms, thats what i hated about the Xperia X2 with sony ericsson not releasing any substantial updates.
Most of the Defy's in Australia are the telstra next g (850mhz/2100mhz) I got a (900mhz/2100mhz) for use on Vodafone, and if i change to optus it will work on that.
I wouldnt mind seeing a Telstra version close up, might try checking them out at the telstra shop and see if they have the market.
Will keep mucking round with it, won't be long and i'll flash a new rom.
now thats strange ... any Android phone that meets google's system requirements, should have a market app "out of the box"...
Tried a few attempted solutions including a market enabler apk but no luck..
Anyone have any clues what i can do??
Very weird! I have never seen any android device without market app out of the box. Have you tried a reset to factory settings? Do you see the Market app in Settings--> Applications--> Application Management? (The translation may vary because I use defy in my native language).
the latest unofficial froyo v3.4.3-3 UK Tmobile Blur also not include market app

If you do find it listed here you may be able to use it with an app like "Better Cut" by creating a shortcut for it. Of course, you have to find a way of getting that app onto your phone, such SD card etc.

Narf, where did you buy the phone? I see complaints from some users about the same issue and when they called the manufacturer (in two cases from a Samsung forum) were told this:
"I spoke with Samsung tech support in the UK and based on my IMEI they determined the phone was grey market imported from the United Arab Emirates where the Market app was not installed. There was nothing they were prepared to do to remedy the problem. I'm returning the phone to eXpansys UK now. "
"Have just finished speaking to Samsung and based on the IMEI and firmware the phone is also from the UAE and they are unwilling/unable to support it. It was purchased from http://www.crescentelectronics.co.uk"
Quotes came from here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android Market/thread?tid=378157a41cd6df08&hl=en
In one post on this forum a UAE user was able to get market on his phone by changing his IMEI number.
Adding Android Market
Hi,
I don't know the specifics of you ROM version but like you, my Defy (on stock Froyo from China) did not have an official Market installed on it.
But I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896312
And I could easilly install the official market without any rooting needed and just by placing the update.zip file on my SD card and do the update by re-booting with Volume DOWN and power ON...
- - -
edit:
- controls are a bit weird on that mode: you have to press the volume up/down to select and the power key to accept.
- clear wipe the cache and the other option (can't remember the exact name of the 2 but it's clear and reset everything) after the update is successful and reboot your phone normally and you should now have the Google goodies [although google map is not the latest version available ...but probably updateable...].
Let me know if it worked! You can hit the "thank" button if it does ;-) [but real credits to the original guy on the link posted above]
edit end

Worth a try on yours...
Good luck!

The version of Desire supplied by Orange lacks Google Talk, amongst a few other annoyances (Orange love to bugger around with firmware). Is there any way of installing it, as it doesn't appear to be installable from Market?
Is this a case of getting the apk from a standard Desire (from where?) and installing it? Or replacing Orange's image with the default (which I think isn't possible yet)?
I'll confess to being new to Android. I apologise if I'm asking stupid questions!
If you go to the nexus one forum, download a rom that isn't cyanogen and then extract it on yout pc, you should find in one of the folders all of the apps, one of them would be gtalk.apk or talk.apk

Just spoke to some numpty at orange about this and the fact i want to delete some of the rubbish they've put on, the first guy cut me off as had no clue then I called again and they said it was a third party app!? They have no idea basically; I wish they would leave things alone, I hope that more people will complain and in an update they will sort it, I had a Hero before and with all the same apps as I had on that I've got less free memory due to the rubbish they put on!
Other than that what a fantastic phone!

No joy so far. I downloaded one of the MoDaCo ROMS, found Talk.apk but it won't install. Installer just says "application not installed". I'll try another later.

I think you need to install IMService first, or something like that =/ I'm not 100% on this never had to do it before.

I've been digging around a bit more. I found nothing called IMService in that ROM, but two others that could be prerequisites - gtalkservice.apk (Google Talk Storage) and TalkProvider.apk (Google Talk Storage). When trying to install either of those, it tells me in each case that it is already installed and the same version.
Time for a bit more trial and error then. It's a shame the installer doesn't give a more useful error message than "application not installed"!

If it weren't for the fact that I need reception in places where Orange is still the only operator to have reliable coverage, I'd have dropped them a long time ago because of this.
It would be nice to think they would listen to reason. I doubt that will happen. You'll only ever get to speak to a numpty, and what do they care anyway — you have already signed up to the contract.
You can replace the Orange ROM with a standard HTC one (I assume this comes with it, I'm still using the Orange one)

How would one do that? I'd be quite happy to use the standard ROM.
There nothing apparent to me that came with it - there's no ROM on the SD card or anything like that.
If orange have removed it from their firmware then be careful, you might end up with a call about using your mobile data for things not included in your contract.
I want Gtalk on my Orange Desire too!!
I read on Android Forum... someone said you can remount the file back to the phone(on Hero).
QUOTE
1. Download the Android 1.6 recovery image @ HTC - Developer Center
2. Open up the recovery image via WinRAR, WinZip or whatever
3. Locate gtalkservice.apk and ImProvider.apk in \system\app
4. Copy those files to your SDCARD and then unmount when done.
5. Go into Terminal Emulator and enter these commands:
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
cp /sdcard/ImProvider.apk /system/app
cp /sdcard/gtalkservice.apk /system/app
reboot
The phone will return back to normal. This works on any type of ROM!
you should be able to remount the talk.apk etc. back, I tried the command in terminal but "access denied"... is it because the phone is locked to orange so I cant modify internal memory??
anyone got ideas???
As I understand it, you need to "root" your phone to do that, and that can't be done yet on the Desire - but clever people are working on it.
I've been trying to install talk.apk from other sources, but haven't succeeded yet. I've not yet seen imservice in any 2.1 ROMs.

I did it by just installing Talk.apk that I got off another 2.1 ROM. I used ASTRO to browse to the file and then install it.
i believe its against orange internet t&c's to user messenger type applications. on windows modile phones they have "orange messanger" where they're cheeky enough to try to charge you for instant messages LOL
Which ROM did you use? I've tried a couple and they've failed to install.

Hey Luke,
Been experiencing this problem ever since i got this phone, i've now tried every firmware update possible, no real fix as yet. I suspected it had something to do with the fact that i moved from a Nexus One with Froyo back to Eclair, but it sounds like you haven't done that.
Let me know if you find a fix... would love to be able to use my market the way it was intended.

I already had 2 crash/freeze with this kernel, it looks definitely unstable.
2 crashes situation :
1/ Pressing stop/play in xiialive lite
2/ listening audio in the standard mp3 player.
It crashed both time using the audio device.
I waited 1min the first time, hoping OOm killer or something else would kill a bad behaving process; without success.
The second time, i did not had time to loose :/
Very disapointing !
2 days after installing JS2 I'm still unable to connect to Market.
I'm unable to setup the Google login. Error is always no server available or something in that manner. Selecting clearing cache in recovery also did not help either.
Any suggestion is highly appreciated.
Thanks.
If you are not able to login to the market, then you will have a general problem..
Because you can even login if you dont have the market fix..
The market fix is just for secure apps...
I just bought a Defy and would like to experiment with it a bit. However, I have a few concerns:
1. I have Eclair and want to root using z4root. I have download ver.1.3.0. How safe is it to root and exactly what features will I get if I do?
2. Say I have rooted the phone, in case anything goes wrong can I revert back to the original? If yes, how? (Would be handy to know the steps beforehand)
3. When the official Froyo update is released, can I update even if it is rooted? If yes, after I update will the phone stay rooted?
4. Is it possible to install apps in a non-rooted phone using a PC? (I have Windows 7). If yes, please provide a link with an easy guide.
5. Is Step 4 possible for rooted phones?
These are for now. I am sure a lot will be added to the list.

Let me so how much I can help you,
1.) Using z4 root, should be completely safe. If it doesn't work it will just stp and you back out of it. You don't really get feature per sae, but you get get "admin" rights to your phone. The app superuser which is attatched the root gives you access to delete all the bloatware preloaded on the phone as well as capability to completely mod your phone. Androids are fun, but non compare to being rooted.
2.) If you use z4 root, I believe there is an unroot feature on there.
3.) You can definitely receive the official upgrade if you are rooted, the only way you wouldn't is if you flash a different rom, but even then as long as you flash back to stock you will get it. Altough, why wait when many of us are already running clean Froyo! By the time the official rolls out, we'll most likely be on 2.3
4.) when you say install apps from the pc, do you mean just using the .apk? If you find the apps online, you can simple connect your defy to the pc and drop that apk on your sd card and open the app from the phone, it will begin installation.
5. The way I just referred yes, I may be confused to the question.
If you root (which you should!) you should look into buying root explorer and Titanium Backup Pro from the market. These two things are a modders dream.
@jjp84: Thanks! So I guess I will root my cell after all!
6. To install .apk directly, does the phone needs to be rooted or can it be tried in a non-rooted phone?
7. Any good radio app which allows FM on loudspeaker?
8. How to get offline Google maps?
9. Any sexy compass application?
10. Is Motoblur with other launchers possible?
6. you can install .apk's on unrooted phones...just tick Settings/Applications/Unknown Sources. You'll need some kind of Explorer app to install 3rd party apk's. i.E. ASTRO or ES Explorer. Then copy apk to SD Card and install it with your preferred explorer.

15. I have problem with my compass. I downloaded the Compass application and I was asked to calibrate. I tried that but it seemed to be little inaccurate. So I tried to calibrate the compass using phone settings. However, here the compass was stuck at red when I tried. I uninstalled compass and tried re-calibrating but it needed a reboot to get it to green. However, when I tried again, it again stayed at red. Had to reboot again. Can you run a quadrant benchmark and give us the scores? I mean how does the defy match up to high end droids in the benchmark score(which it shows at the end of the test) and how many FPS you get in the GPU benchmark inside that(the test in which graphics is tested using that first person shooter view test). If you dont know how to run quadrant benchmark, google it, its common.(Sorry if it is installed by default, i dont know about it, i am planning to buy an android phone soon so i am interested in defy) and what is the street price of defy? Since MRP is 18.5k INR, street price must be lesser. Thanks.
Abhi seems like Motorola released a newer version of the firmware for India. Because the 2.51 UK was pretty hard to root and z4root didnt work on it. We had to use super1click to root it.
Hmm. . i guess you will also find it unrootable for the moment.
In case you do root it then install the tenfar recovery apk and then make a backup of the stock rom you have before you do anything else to it. That way it might be of use in case you want to get back to original setup or if you decide to return the phone to the company when still under warranty.

Ok so I tried searching and the only answers I could come up with were for a different rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11626645&postcount=425) as the video said I'm a noob I hate myself, it's right lol. But I can't seem to figure this out. Before I dive in I want to know if it's similar for my current ROM to these steps. I don't want to screw anything up I tried clearing the market data, and checking the adult filter. None of that helped.
Phone is HTC DHD Telus is the provider, So I rooted to Android_Revolution_HD-4G_6.1.5 without any problem. Flashed over to the suggested radio. Phone seems to be working good and fast but I can't install the app. It ran on my phone before I rooted... what am I doing wrong. Even when I find it not through the market. It takes me to the market and says "Your device is not compatible with this item" and I know that's a load of crap. If there's someone smarter then me out there (so pretty much anyone) Help please

I'm having same problems with other apps and an earlyer version of ARHD(6.1.2). Would sure like to know how to resolve this. I'm thinking the ROM gives back a model, android version and manufacturer to android market(and maybe more info, i'm not an expert). If this says HTC Desire HD android 2.3.3, this is good. If this says Android Revolution Desire HD android 2.3.5 and this is not the response in the list of "the app" you want to download than market says "NO"???????? Or maybe it's something else?
At least I'm not the only one who can't figure it out
From what I can gather, its the new market causing the problem.
Wait until google fix it, or install an older market and delete the updater.
Sent from The App that Time Forgot.
+1 JagDave is right!!
And you may also try :
1. Change the LCD density to 240 by editing build.prop using buildprop editor or something from the market,
2. Reboot (Normal),
3. Go to settings, then application, find market there and clear the cache and data (very important), and
4. Open Market and try to download your apps now!!
Worked for me, dont know about you but i hope it does work for you as well!!
I ended up going and swapping to CM7 cause I was having some other issues and that seemed to fix it thanks everyone!
Thread closed at OP request.
So I just picked up a nook simple touch and am eager to root it, I've done plenty with Android on phones, never an ebook though. I've been reading the material here and had a couple questions.
1.) It looks like 1.1 firmware is needed for most of the roots here, however B&N only lists 1.2 currently. Does anyone have a mirror to 1.1 or tell me how to get that, currently I'm on 1.0.1
2.) If I can't get 1.1 are there any roots that will work for 1.2? I've been following the thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346748 and it looks like it only works from 1.1 by the sound of it.
3.) Is everyone or anyone using the NoRefreshToggle? If so what do you think? Is it worth trying it out? Dangers of using it? When you toggle it off do you get greyscale back? From the sounds of the post, it's pure black and white with it on which is fine if when I disable it, it goes back to normal greyscale images.
4.) Did anyone find out how to turn off page animations in the kindle app? not a big deal, just wondering.
Thanks a lot, look forward to trying this out.
Here's a copy of nook_1_1_update.zip I pulled down from B&N a few weeks ago: http://www.mediafire.com/?h5kn1214gfjhkcg In the end I didn't need it, so I can't confirm how the upgrade works (the instructions said just put the file within the zip on an SD card and reboot)

Thanks for the link
Thanks for the 1.1 post link, however I updated to 1.1.2 and followed the instructions and everything seems to be ok, I can get email, install from the market place, only thing I can't do is search the market. A search just lists a blank page and doesn't find any apps, any ideas.
As for the Kindle question, after installing kindle app and seeing the performance, this isn't a big deal at all.
Still curious on the refresh toggle however, any ideas on that, have you guys tried it out? I may post there if I don't hear back.
Thanks

I have checked and as you said market search functionality is absent, it seems to be broken since the Googleplay thing.
As a way to regain it, in the mean time we get an updated market working, install Searchmarket.
The NorefreshToggle is still in early stages, but works quite well for webpages, etc.
Try it, there are no risks on it, on any program when you enable the app it will work, and when you go into a menu it will return to normal grayscale.

How do I install Searchmarket if I can't search the market for it lol ... Do I have to install it on my phone first, then transfer the apk over to the NST, then file browse and install it from /system/app ?
I tried NoRefreshToggle, it's interesting, like you said a work in progress ... Tried it with GReader unfortunatly it shuts off between Feed view and Article view which is a pain, but I think that's probably to avoid ghosting.
As for web page viewing, Opera Mini FCs on me everytime I open it, as does the stock browser, so I haven't been able to try browsing as of yet Still looking for a solution to that one.
Thanks for all the info, really enjoying the NST if NoRefreshToggle keeps getting better this could really be a killer device

I just use the Google Play website to initiate installs to the nook (it appears in my device list as "phone")
The included Opera Mini installation never worked for me (no FC nothing). In the end I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling.

Didn't even know you could send apps like that to your devices, never had a need to try it before. Worked like a charm ... Opera is working now as well, thanks for the tips Really enjoying Android on the NST
So are you saying you are on 1.1.2 rooted and enjoying it?
Should I downgrade to 1.1.1 and root or just go ahead with 1.1.2?
I can't wait to try this out.

I can't speak to the upgrade patch from 1.1.1, I bought my NST yesterday, it had 1.0.1 on it, I upgraded to 1.1.2 then followed the rooting instructions for 1.1.0 or was it 1.1.1 can't remember, in any case, after rooting everything seems to be working just fine

It was 1.1.0, there was no 1.1.1
Is there any risk upgrading to 1.1.2 from 1.1.0? Would I have to reinstall google apps &c? Did anything change in between 1.1.0 and 1.1.2? (I have heard that they may have fixed the WiFi issues that were plaguing me a few months ago.)
