Regarding OTA Updates...

I'm new to rooting but I rooted my EVO in June via a link posted of HTCEVOHACKS.COM and I continue to get a message to do the OTA updates. When I try to click yes it downloads but the files are then corrupted and when they try to install the phone shows a picture of the EVO and a red question mark, then it shuts off. Am I not able to get OTA updates with the EVO rooted? Since it is a new phone I would like to get some updates when glitches are found. I also want to get the FROYO update on Tuesday when Sprint releases it. Any help on how to continue to stay rooted and get updates or how to get FROYO when released by my carrier would be awesome. Again, I'm now to this so if this process could be explained in simple terms, that would help too.

Go to the dev section and download the rooted Froyo update, flash it just like any custom rom. Read in the OP it will tell you what to do and what order to do it in, presto you have all updates and still have root.

Thanks. I'm going to try that now. I guess I didn't realize that you couldn't get OTA updates after you rooted your phone.

You NEVER want to take an OTA after you root your phone. Most Roms will block them out now. Why you ask? because it will unroot you and then you have to wait and see when/if will be rootable with the new patch which can take a while.
So always check for updates int he dev pages for roms using the new patches when they come out, never take an OTA if you are asked, and enjoy your root

You definitely dodged a bullet with this one. If the OTA would have worked, you would have lost root and been stuck unless/until somebody figured out a way to root Froyo. Consider yourself lucky.

It says it will wipe everything. So a complete backup is needed.
I am still quite new to this. Forgive me, but what is the BEST way to back up EVERYTHING -- including apps and contacts and SMS etc.
I have Titanium Back up Pro (and im rooted) though I haven't really used it yet -- is this the best ?
Is there any good apps out there ? Any good programs I should know ?

I just saw this too. Unfortunately, I've upgraded to JH2. The facebook post says you need JG9.

Now... how can we locate a JG9 firmware image? I cannot find it on samfirmware. I guess we'll need to flash back to get this update.
I'll update my post when I find information, but feel free to post how we can get back to the JG9 firmware if I'm off base.
- Titanium backup is good to backup apps and data.
- I've used SMS Backup and Restore to backup SMS.
- Contacts are backed up by Google itself as is the calendar.
- APN data might have to be re-entered manually. There is an APN backup and restore as well.
- I'm not sure if call log data can be backed up and restored.

I find titanium hard to use, undestand and unreliable. Mybackup pro is waaaay better.

Is it just me or didnt my phone update to that firmware weeks ago when I got the thing... Some fix Samsung, thanks alot for wasting the last 2 weeks of my life waiting on you to come up with a resolution.

If you have attempted to resolve the three-button recovery issue by upgrading the device to JH2 using a version of Kies earlier than 1.5.110074_45 and the recovery procedure is not working, please visit a Bell authorized dealer to have the device returned to a Samsung authorized service centreto have the issue resolved.

I installed JH2 via Kies something like 2 weeks ago. 3 button recovery/download is still not working. The Facebook page helpfully recommends taking it back and getting it serviced, but I think I'll wait until it's bricked.

I guess our only hope is for someone to tell us how to safely downgrade..

Just downgrade to JG9 then do the update.. its a different version of JH2 that is up for download via KIES it updates the SPL. were the old one didn't

Im hoping someone can get KIES to downgrade to JM9, so that we can update to JH2 using the supposed new version of KIES. Dont really see how this will make any difference, but heres to wishful thinking.

Any idea how I can go about getting the JG9 firmware?

Does anyone have a download link for JG9? Pretty sure you can get kies to flash any rom you want by fiddling with the registry.

im gonna wait and see what the results are for other people before i do this too. maybe im paranoid but it doesnt hurt to be patient i guess.

Sorry was trying to quote you.. Anyway Id love to get back to the previous firmware, Any idea how to go about that? Ive seen people redirect KIES to other Firmwares, ie the new Froyo build, but havent seen anything to go back.

Hmm...
This "new" JH2 which should fix the "3-button combos" is a low package.
Maybe Kies (Odin SS_DL) is able to update the bootloader, because Odin does not seem to be able to do it.
If someone wants to try it with Odin, I can upload the file.

Hey man I am with you I think. I haven't done NO upgrades or firmware updates. Why? b/c I can't get Keis to work
So I'm still on stock.
My phone says this:
Original Production Software:
PDA: I9000UGJG9
PHONE: I9000UGJG9
CSC: I9000BMCJG9
I've only rooted my phone and used the 1-click-lag-fix
So questions -- once I upgrade my phone via Keis do I have to re-apply 1-click-lag-fix ?
do I have to un-root my phone before I upgrade via Keis ?

Its software and it has been all along.. its the SPL Boot-loader... all they have done is get KIES to flash the boot loader this time.. in the past when you changed roms the bootloader was not changed.. now this flash with update the boot-loader with the fix..

Hmm, I updated a few weeks back to JH2. Its been running fine, but having that 3 button ability would give me more peace of mind. They suggest bringing it to a dealer for warranty replacement/repair if we've already upgraded - seems a bit excessive. I'm wondering if this "bootloader" alteration will be included in future firmware updates perhaps? Like froyo (hopefully in a few weeks)? If that's the case, I'll just wait for that instead of trying to flash back to JG9, then back forward to the "new" JH2.
Any word/thoughts on if this bootloader thing is a one-time deal from JG9 to new JH2 only?

I would assume that most people that want the 3-button fix are the kind of people that upgraded to JH2 as soon as it was available and thus with a version of kies "prior to 1.5.110074_45". Therefore most people will fall into the category where they must return the phone for service as explained in samsung FB note.
This is bizarre... even if the new firmware is the same as JH2 except for the low level stuff, they could have given it a new name just to allow kies to upgrade it. Instead they are explicitly telling us to send the phone back! It really looks like they are shooting themselves in the foot. Why not tell us to wait one week for Froyo and get the new boot loader + froyo at the same time. Returning it to Samsung will take much longer.
Also, there are a lot of users who did upgrade to JH2 using the latest Kies, and not one of them has emerged saying it fixed the 3-button issue.
Either Samsung has failed big time on this, or the statements on FB are not legit.

So, How long could it take before I actually get Jelly Bean?

I know that they do a slow roll out process for the OTA's, and all. But, anyone have any clue as to how long the process may take? I have a 6 day old straight from the play store gnex. Not root, or nothing completely stock still.

It depends but should be under a week if not sooner.

It's frustrating that on this phone you need an unlocked bootloader to install a downloaded update package. I didn't bother to unlock my phone when I first got it since with my N1 it wasn't necessary. Having to wait sucks...

you dont have to unlock your bootloader.
you just have to wait for the OTA update to get to your phone. they roll out in batches and are not done all at once.

Yep, supposedly they started rolling out JB already ..
i havent got jack Sh!t yet here in the NYC area

I know, that's exactly what I'm complaining about though. With my completely stock N1 I didn't have to wait. I know in the past for some people it took weeks before the OTA got to them. Not cool.

[Q] 4.1.2 JZO54K Won't OTA to 4.2 But Another GN Will?

So I have a small question...
I have a Galaxy Nexus, had it since day 30 or so. Updated OTA many times and rooted every time, using the stock ROM so everything is perhaps more simple.
The lady friend has also got a GN. Her phone downloaded the OTA update and is now bugging her to install. She purchased her phone only a couple of months ago. We're on the same build number but my GN won't see the update to 4.2.
Is there a reason for this? Did Google pull the update once they have figured out the December bug and haven't yet fixed it?
I am a little worried as I used the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit to root my 4.1.2 phone but as the toolkit wasn't updated, I used the settings for 4.1.1. I am certain I did this to my partners phone too, but that is the only thing I can think of as to why I haven't got the update.
I'm not totally desperate for it, but just wondering why.

Nobody really knows (afaik) how Google decides which Nexus devices get OTA updates first. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with how 'old' your device is though. And having root won't affect the OTA update, don't worry. You do need stock recovery though.

I don't have anything like CWM installed. My phone is completely stock apart from rooted
Might try re-rooting using the Toolkit as my phone version (just in case) and then just wait I guess. Just a shame it won't see the update as I would have thought once they set the server to show there is a new version, all devices would see it... just like Windows Update for instance.

HTC/USA TWEETED today that today's update is the first part of the 2 part 4.3 VZW update. Today was a compatibility update for the 4.3 update.

The only way that makes sense is if it updates recovery. I'm not really sure why anyone would still be on the stock rom anyway ...

Here is further info from HTC regarding updates to the Verizon HTC One (about halfway down the page). 4.3 update in December, and 4.4 late January.

It did and often does.
It updated recovery and hboot, which would be very possible to have to change to allow the 4.3 OTA to actually flash properly when it's put out.

So if we didn't do the OTA we will have to do an OTA.zip to do the 4.3?

Ok, so I took the .15 ota as is and still was s-off and unlocked. All I had to do was flash supersu and done.
Just cleaned up the bloat and made my edits for remove location icon n WiFi nag.. no negative effects.

Guys, I am at a loss here...I got the Verizon HTC ONE, used rumrunner to achieve S-OFF, Unlock, and Root, then flashed CWM 6.0.4.4 (I do have installed aps that require root if that matters) That's it. No de-bloat, no custom ROM, nothing. When I re-flash the original stock recovery back and try to check for and take the OTAs from the front end, I get "no new software update available". I'm still on 1.10.605.2 and original firmware. Would like to take this thing up to latest, be S-OFF, Unlocked, Rooted still but still off the shelf or stock for a bit more until I have shaken this thing down more.
I like the look of Santod's ROMs, probably will end up there, but not yet . His stock updated ROMs appear to have too much blue baked in for me - I like it off the shelf right now.

Have you frozen anything at all in Titanium Backup? If I remember correctly you have to relock your bootloader to be able to OTA (I may be mistaken though). If I were you I'd just wait until someone posts an OTApkg.zip (I think there's one available already) and just flash that instead.

No OTA will download onto the .02 software.
That was a version that shouldn't really have been distributed as far as I can see.
It will never see or allow for an OTA, so you will need to update to a stock .08 or stock .10 rom to be able to get the .15 OTA.
By the way, my stock roms are 100% stock, I did not change the colors of a single thing in my stock roms.
They are there for the 100% stock experience and for restore purposes. The .15 will be posted today as well.
NuSenseONE Max has blue elements added, but none of my stock roms do.

As stated, I don't think the .2 software was supposed to be distributed.
As you can see from the story above, it does not pull the OTA's.
I have seen this now on the last couple OTA's where folks on .2 were not able to see any updates.
One user took his to Verizon to have it replaced/updated there.
Most of them appeared to have had .2 at one point and then were updated/reflashed to the .8 and the box relabeled before being sold.
Most of the boxes still had the .2 sticker under the new .8 one.
Point is, it wasn't supposed to be distributed as far as I can tell and since it's not truly a Release version, it won't update.
You would have to ask Verizon/HTC for any further clarification then that.

Lol @santod040 is a freaking HTC One Oracle. I never even knew .2 was thing before he asked that let alone knowing it was jank and wouldn't accept OTAs. How did he get .2? I got the phone like 4 days after Verizon launched it and it had .8.

Forget Verizon ... Just root and run 4.3/5.5 .. first it was a month delayed which would have been November now it's December ... They just released the max . They will focus on that now and the one will be just like the
DNA or incredible 4g on Verizon

This makes sense because 1 month after the 3rd week of October is the 2nd week of December, right? Verizon?
